Jesse and Jessica shared almost everything as children, except the same birthday. One other thing they couldn’t share was the love of their dad. He had his favorite for reasons best not mentioned.
The family is torn apart when their dad is found murdered with all the traits of a particular twisted MO. A robbery gone wrong, jealous partner in a love triangle, warring neighbors, or someone closer to home? For Logan, the lead detective at the time and now head of LAPD homicide, the answer was and is simple. Jessica was guilty. That’s despite the case having never gone to trial, now gathering dust after fifteen years as his only cold case file of an otherwise illustrious career.
When a murder takes place with a similar MO, detective Jason Stone is allocated the case. He’s a young man on a one–man mission to make a name for himself, and one who will break the rules to get there. Stone believes a mysterious person he dubs the Night Girl holds the key to unraveling the case. But just as he is close to cracking the case, his suspect list grows.
Taken off the case, he goes undercover to continue his investigation. Infatuated, he places Jessica under surveillance to get close. Too close. Someone should tell him to stop chasing a dream, or could end up as the serial killer’s next target.
I received this as an arc from the author them self in exchange for an honest review. Jesse and Jessica shared almost everything as children, except the same birthday. One other thing they couldn't share was the love of their dad. He had his favourite for reasons best not. mentioned.
Wow. OMG. Wow. Absolutely fantastic read. CNPID. I loved the story and the characters. Jessica. was my favourite character. So was the detective. I was shocked with who it was. But when. you. read it you understand. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. Definitely worth more than 5 *.
What an intense and disheartening story. This was very informative novel about abuse in many forms and stages of life. It takes a deep look into mental health disorders and the traumatic effects it has on the lives of its victims. The mystery of the whose the killer was second nature to finding out more about the twins personally. I do believe that it's more harder for Jesse's character to have become disassociated with reality because he didn't bury his abuse like Jessica did, he released his anger and pain early. I truly believe the twins were abused in different ways, and the Mom covered for her husband. Her story just seemed made up to me, and Jessica's accounts of never being abused was just a repressed memory. She knew all along the things her father did between her and her brother was different, but she interpreted it as love and affection. But what he did to Jesse was interpreted to him as cruelty not fantasy affection. Jessica had it good and bad because although she suffered, she chose to repress everything good and bad about her life and progressed on. But Jesse stayed broken and had no one to truly understand him at all. It had to be a nightmare living your life in another persons shadow that had your face, but you're never seen. Poor Jesse had one mental disorder after another stacked up on him struggling for dominance. This was an awesome story, there were two Jessica's trying to find themselves.

Overall I did enjoy this book, however, I guessed the culprit very early on. I enjoyed following the story and the characters were likeable but the ending and explanation seemed rushed and I felt slightly short changed. I love a good psychological, crime plot but this one just seemed to leave me thinking there should be more.
A family destroyed. Dysfunctional. Father stabbed to death, young girl found holding the knife. Her twin brother, in the background with Mom. Daughter put in mental institution, brother adopted. Daughter released, to a halfway house. Then, all kinds of stuff happens.
From the beginning, there are countless clues and suspenseful twists. You will be guessing throughout the book, but won't know until the very end. Well done!
I enjoyed reading this book. It was hard to put it down once I started it.
Jessica has been released from a secure hospital 15 years after her father was brutally murdered. There were several suspects but no one went on trial for the murder although the lead detective at the time believed 12 year old Jessica was the culprit and that she may have been abused by her father.
On her release she is taken to a halfway house by her social worker who may or may not have ulterior motives. There she is befriended by another resident, Debbie, who may not be entirely honest. We also know from the start of the book there is a brother Jesse who was taken away at the time of his father's murder and subsequently adopted. He hasn't had any contact with his sister Jessica during her long stay in hospital and desperately wants to meet her and have her come to stay with him so he can protect her. The authorities want to delay any meeting to allow Jessica time to assimilate into the community.
Shortly after Jessica is released there is another murder with a similar MO. Jason Stone is the young detective assigned to the case. He's not shy about breaking the rules in his search for the killer and ends up getting taken off the case. However he continues to investigate the case unofficially.
The suspect list keeps getting longer and there are a few red herrings along the way (and a few more deaths).
I had my suspicions as to the identity of the killer but was never really be sure and was kept guessing until the end.
An enjoyable book. I believe this is the first of the Jason Stone books. I hope there will be more.
I would like to thank Declan Conner for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review. What a book! A real CPID (Can't Put It Down) novel. I started reading this at 9,30 in the morning and finished it at 10 that night. I was exhauster as it is a roller-coaster ride! I love crime fiction and psychological thrillers and this is a perfect example of how they can be combined. The interaction between Jason and Kyle, the two detectives was spot-on. You could feel the rivalry between them. I will certainly be reading more of Declan's books and hope there will be more about Detective Jason Stone.
This is a mixture of Whodunit Mystery and Police Procedural with a Twist of Psychological thriller.
Jason Stone is a LAPD detective who catches a case that could make or break his career. A double homicide on New Year's Day has a list of suspects which grows as does the body count. What's the connection and who can Stone trust to help him find the answers?
The story is full of twists and turns. Mr. Conner kept me guessing until the last page. Even then I had to re-read it to make sure I saw it correctly.
Warning: This is for Mature Audiences due to Violence, Graphic crime scenes, Adult Situations, and Sexual Relationships that may be disturbing to some.
Very interesting book. Loved the characters of the book and the fact that it was able to keep me interested until the end. Didn't like the end, too confusing but had me thinking. Had to reread the last of the book and am still not sure about how it ended....
Would be interested in reading more books that involve these characters
I received this ebook in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved this book it has everything a reader could want a great storyline and fantastic characters. I've never read anything by this author before but I can safely say I'll definitely read more.
