Regency Unlaced #1

The Duke's Mistress

Rate this book
The young widow Lady Dorothea Fitzroy is bored with her life. Most especially so with her role as mistress of her brother’s household, and the endless round of society engagements this forces her to endure.

What Thea so badly needs is a secret and passionate lover, to become mistress of another kind entirely, and so add excitement and spice into her humdrum life. But where is she to find this handsome and inexhaustible gentleman?

Julian Remington, the arrogant and haughty 17th Duke of Blackmoor has no interest in finding a mistress for his bedroom or his home. He’s jaded, cynical, and distrustful when it comes to women. One woman, a woman from his past, has caused too much grief in his life for him to ever trust another.

Thea and Julian are about to be caught up in a passion for each other that blazes so fiercely, and so out of control, it is beyond the power of either of them to resist.

The Duke’s Mistress is the story of an arrogant duke and an adventurous young widow, caught up in their insatiable desire for each other, the vengeful woman who would like nothing better than to see Blackmoor suffer as she has suffered, and believes Thea Fitzroy to be the means by which she will achieve it.

Author's Note: Please be aware that the stories in the Regency Unlaced Series are more explicit in language and sexual content than my other books.

I am thinning my kindle books and reread (skimmed this book) as I didn't write a review when I read it. I thought the plot a bit thin, and the sexy parts were just ok. Fun short story.

2.5 MEH STARS

Lady Thea, a widow finds herself bored and yearning for her desires to be fulfilled, desires her late husband was unable to meet. In the Duke of Blackmoor, Julian Remington she finds a demanding lover, and a man with some dangerous secrets.

A short read, it made for light reading – although I didn’t find myself entranced by the plot and the characters and their chemistry. The plot isn’t very substantial and the historical detail non-existent but on a night were sleep has been a struggle this has made for a good short read that has helped lulled my brain to snooze. The novella is a tiny bit steamy – I wasn’t that engaged with the sex/love scenes so some skim reading occurred (steam level of this book was for me at a stretch 2.5 - with 10 being super-hot).

For such a short read, a little less internal dialogue when it came to the main characters would have been best. I’ve read Carole Mortimer’s contemporary and historical romance books/novellas in the past and enjoyed, but this novella won’t be staying on my kindle, it’s also already dissipating from my memory.

Freebie on Amazon.

Well written Regency on the smutty side. Kept my attention, although I wish it was longer so that the plot could be developed, and the relationship between the H+h was less the insta-lust to insta-love pipeline. Will most likely read more by Carole Mortimer.

Lady Dorothea Fitzroy is a twenty-five year old widow. She wants a handsome, virile lover who will satisfy her lustful desires. The forwardness of the Duke of Blackmoor catches her off guard and intrigues her. Julian Remington, the Duke of Blackmoor, has been keeping dark secrets, secrets that now threaten his own safety and the safety of those closest to him. When a ghost from his past returns to London, Julian acts quickly to protect Lady Fitzroy and his daughter, Lady Amelia.

This isn't a true Regency romance. Yes, the hero and heroine profess their love for each other at the end of the book and agree to marry, but I never got the sense that they truly fell in love. On the romance element, this book gets 1/2 a star. This book is an erotic Regency tale. The hero and heroine have the hots for each other. Their relationship begins with a series of hook-ups. He rents a house for them to engage privately in their sexual liaisons, but due to the interference of the villain, they never meet there. I wouldn't describe Lady Fitzroy as a mistress. When I think of a Regency-era mistress, I think of a woman who is kept {housed, fed, given an allowance/clothes/jewelry/servants} by her protector. In exchange for his protection, she offers him her body on-demand to satisfy his sexual desires. Lady Fitzroy is a gently-bred lady who lives with her brother, an earl, and her nephew. She doesn't need a protector to provide any material possessions for her. Her relationship with Julian is one of mutual sexual desire. One might say, they are friends with benefits or simply lovers. As far as the erotic element of this book is concerned, I give it 3.5 stars.

Problematic

It wasn't true to the time period. There is no way a woman would announce to a man's daughter AT HER WEDDING that she was about to screw her dad. That's frowned on even today, never mind the Regency era.

It literally ruined the book for me.

Captivating

A sensual and romantic story of a widow wanting to explore an erotic relationship she has never had and the Duke offering to give her the chance. There is also intrigue and betrayal to be dealt with.

Sexy and Exciting Novella to Kick Off New Series

"Thea desired a lover."

FINAL DECISION: Short, sexy and also containing a suspense story, there is a lot in this short novella, but the characters are well-drawn and make this one worth reading.

THE STORY: Lady Dorothea Fitzroy, a young widow, is bored with her staid life living with her brother. She wants to find a lover and fulfill the sexual desires that her marriage left unfulfilled. Julian Remington, Duke of Blackmoor, walks into Thea's life and while she desires him, she believes that she has nothing to attract such a man. Brought together by the marriage of Julian's daughter and Thea's nephew, the two begin a sexual dance that is threatened by a secret from Julian's past. Someone wants to make sure that Julian pays for what happened in the past and will use anyone--including Thea to get revenge.

OPINION: This is one sexy little treat between Julian and Thea. The two are clearly meant for one another and the only thing keeping them apart is the danger from Julian's past. I liked how their relationship developed and how there was a lot packed into this short book. While the identity of the threat is quickly known, there is still drama. I also liked that Thea is a woman who is ready to take control of her own life and own pleasures. These are likeable characters and I can't wait to read more in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book introduces the series and other characters from future book make small appearances, but this novella focuses on the main characters rather than trying to introduce everyone in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE DUKE'S MISTRESS is the first book in the Regency Unlaced series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.

Set in London 1816. Gave this book 2.5 stars. Sorry,
but this felt like a lust story rather than a love story.

Julian (a duke) was depicted as a taciturn, dictatorial
control-freak & lust interest Thea (an earl's sister) as
a smart, selectively defiant woman. Julian pushed her
around verbally like a ragdoll. In one scene, Thea told
him to get out, he kissed her (he withheld kissing during
their lust sessions) and she melted. Please!

I would have enjoyed this story better if: 1) Thea "stuck
to her guns" w/o wavering. 2) Julian was less selfish &
more vulnerable. It's tiresome when romance heroes
justify their negative behaviors in the present by events
from their pasts. 3) Julian genuinely showed remorse
via a real grovel.

An enjoyable short novella which manages to balance the romance with spicy scenes and an external threat. Something about this worked; I think it was the fact that, despite the compressed timeframe, the insta-love trap was avoided. This was mostly due to the threat from an external party. That was done well at the beginning of each chapter so it didn’t come out of left field.

The love scenes were mostly fun - nothing too adventurous here but more on the explicit side than the usual Harlequin regency line.

Recommended for fans of the author and people looking for a quick read which some strong writing.

After reading book 2 was hoping to enjoy going back and reading book 1 would be as pleasant for me.

Gratifyingly enough Julian and Thea's story did not disappoint me as it was every bit as enjoyable as hoped for.0

Unexpected Love

A widow at 23, now, two years later, Thea considers taking a lover. It's the father of her nephew's betrothed, Lord Blackmoor, who has stimulated her ideas, but she is astonished when he reciprocates her intentions.
This period love story is well-crafted and enjoyable, as issues Blackmoor thought were in the past rise up to threaten everything he holds dear.

3.5 stars. I liked this story, it was well written and very steamy and interesting, but the only thing that dragged it down a bit for me was the massive amounts of internal dialogue by both the h/h. They were constantly recapping everything that had already happened, which as a reader, I felt was not needed. If there hadn't been so much of that I would have given 4 stars. That said, I will be making my way through all this author's back list as she is one of my favourites. I have been reading her stories for many years - ever since she started with Mills and Boon.

I enjoyed this romance. There are some well-written love scenes, along with a convoluted plot that goes well with the time period. This is a fun, but completely unrealistic regency romance. The fooling around was fun to read, but I don't think anyone would get away with it in the regency society.

I can see why this series is dubbed Regency Unlaced! An unfulfilled young widow fantasizes taking a virile lover. The eventual lover is, of course, a very forward, brash duke who understands her needs and voices them from the beginning of the tale. Their encounters sizzle and they deeply touch one another beyond the physical. Of course all isn’t smooth sailing for the lovers. Someone from the duke’s past has reappeared in his life intent on doing him and his loved ones irreparable harm. This book wasn’t long, it was an easy, and very hot, read. I liked the duke and the widow. I also liked that the antagonist’s point of view started things off and was interspersed through the story so we were reminded of that dark cloud. An overall enjoyable read for those, like me, who like hot sizzle and spice between the main characters. When I finished this book I returned to Amazon and purchased the second in the series, Claimed by the Marquis as my next read.

I'm a big fan of regency romances, but it's not easy to find a good romance book. I bought the The Duke's Mistress by Carole Mortimer last week (around Valentine's Day) and it was exactly what I was looking for - a steamy romance novel with plenty of heat and emotional tugs in all the right places.

The characters, Thea and Julian Remington (the Duke of Blackmoor) had amazing chemistry from the start - I loved that she told the reader how she felt about him, and her feelings were raw, honest, and carnivorous as were his feelings for her. I felt she was more than a mistress to the duke from the start to the end.

There was action, movement along the plotline, great pinch points that pulled my heartstrings, and an ending that left me wanting to read more. Thank you to the author for giving romance readers The Duke's Mistress.

The book is nothing more than porn. It should be labeled as such. If you were to take all the sex and nasty condescending sexist remarks out of it you wouldn't have any more than a pamphlet. I can't believe a woman would write a story about a man treating a woman in such as sexist degrading way and the woman liking it. Isn't this the same type of behavior that women's advocacy groups have been fighting to stop? Yet this book seems to promote it.

The worst part about this book is that it was provided free for an honest review. Porn should not be given away for free. You should have to pay for porn and it needs to be kept out of the hands of children and teens. I do not see how this book could be classified as romance.

The bored Lady Dorothea Fitzroy dreamed of becoming The Duke's Mistress, well not any duke but the Duke of Blackmoor, Julian Remington. He is cold, aloft, condescending and not known to be emotionally attached to any woman.

Thea becomes The Duke's Mistress for a brief period of time and then he pushes her away when his past threatens Lady Thea.

The sex is hot and dirty, the romance is sweet when neither person expects to find romance and the danger adds an element of suspense. True to the period, behavior is controlled by what is acceptable to the ton in society of London; rules are made to be broken to make this a fun novella.

The Duke's Mistress

I loved this book. The Duke's daughter is getting married to Thea's nephew and she is helping plan the wedding. She is a widow who is very attracted to the Duke and he attracted to Thea. The Duke has a very dangerous person in his past that is out to hurt the one's he loves so in order to protect his daughter and Thea he cannot show Thea that he is attracted to her. There is plenty of sensuality and suspense in this book to keep you interested. I thought it was a great read. There is some foul language and some explicitly described sexual scenes so if that offends you then you probably don't want to read this book.

I so enjoyed this story I can't wait to read it over. Wonderful characters, Julian comes off as a bossy, overbearing ass at first. Thea is a young widow who doesn't see her life as being over now and wants to experience more. She is the perfect foil for Julian, unlike any of the women he's ever been involved with before. The fly in the ointment is a mysterious woman from his past and her story is so twisted it'll make your skin crawl. There is a happy ending but it takes some time to find it just as it does Julian and Thea. It's also refreshing to see Thea being much stronger than most female leads in stories of this genre. Well done, Ms Mortimer. I look forward to your next book!

In the beginning there was a Duke and also a Lady who met and felt an instant attraction for each other but neither would let this be known. Their younger family members were about to get married and that is when it all started.
This story is beautifully written with a 'yes, its on' and 'no, its now off' situation between the two main characters. Its sexy, it has mystery, it has murders and insanity but most of all it has love and the warmness and the caring of two very compatible people.
Another winner by Carole Mortimer!

Couldn’t sleep and didn’t want to start a super long book so I started this one (one of Amazon’s freebies I think — no wonder it was free). I probably wouldn’t have finished it if I had another reasonable-length book handy on my Kindle (less than 300-400 pages). Not great character development, way too vulgar for my tastes in this genre, and too much anachronistic language. Giving it 2 stars because I could see it being a much better story with more development and less crude language (and I did finish it, painful as it was to do so.)
