Hagakure: El código del samurái

Rate this book

Manga version of the Hagakure...read it at the same time you read the book. Give this book to someone who is starting out on their martial arts journey; it will help them focus on some of the more intangible aspects of MA that (so often) are ignored in todays 'get ready to test for your next colored belt' focus so many schools have today.

Hagakure - The Code of The Samurai
If you have seen the movie Ghost Dog you have been introduced to the Hagakure. If you have studied the Bushido in any form, then no doubt you have come across this work. Profound and misunderstood at the same time. A lifetime treat to unravel slowly and deliberately. READ THIS BOOK if the old ways of the blade call you
The warrior rule in Japan lasted from 1160 to 1868. In 1710 Tsunetomo Yamamoto began dictating perhaps one of the best known and least understood books on the Way of the Warrior- The Hagakure. This is the Code of the Samurai.
The book is a collection of parables that point towards the Samurai life. It begins with a young scribe who comes to an old master looking for a unique education, and boy does he get one.
In this edition which is adapted by Sean Micheal Wilson - the old wisdom stories are bought to life in anime/illustrations, making it a real pleasure to read.
The book is divided into firve chapters 1)The Way of the Samurai 2) Loyalty 3)Revenge 4)Kaishaku and Seppaku 5) Sincerity
Way of The Samurai: - book of Kokendenju. Several anecdotes that illustrate the path less travelled. Lesson 1:Matters of Great Concern should be treated lightly 2: Learning when to be ruthless and when to retire 3: Making fun of others is beneath a Samurai 4: Samurai does not ignore rude behavior
Loyalty:- 1: to the present moment 2: being kind to ones retainers 3: Not to seek wealth and fame for its own sake 4:the geneology story 5:Staying humble at heart
Revenge:- Revenge is beautiful act 2: Avoiding shame by embracing death 3: How to take proper revenge
Kaishaku and Seppaku : 1:The right way to cut heads 2:NO fame for a good cut, but a lifetime of disgrace for a bad one
Sincerity: 1:Sincerity is the way of heaven and is instinctive
If you are into MA you will lobe this book, if you study the old ways then BUY THIS COMIC book version. If you are fascinated by the Japanese ways, and or anime, you will really enjoy this adaptation.

In many ways, I think that this version builds upon the writings of Tsunetomo by adding a picturesque clarity. The simplicity of the style that William Scott Wilson's classic English translation has is nothing to shy away from, however, I was interested in how the manga adaptation would work for such a classic of philosophy. The result... I think it works very well. Alongside the previous, 'The Book of Five Rings', I think this carries the momentum forward in a very good way *without* sacrificing the style of the original. Once again, I was dumbstruck by the beauty of the ending of the book.

This was a wonderful version of the classic philosophies of Tsunetomo! Every child should be given this book when they are in grade school in order to learn how to carry themselves honorably throughout life. I will NEVER give up this book!

The first time I read it I felt so disturbed, I had to put it away for a while. I took it up again after half a year, and I could then get the gist behind all the cuttings and blood. Gee, how people change in just 6 months. For better? Not sure...

It's well illustrated. I don't agree with much of it (they seem to think killing is okay much more often than I do) but that's the Hagakure not the version

Very cool version of the Hagakure if you're familiar with the original work. If you also entertain a taste for Manga or comics in general, definitely a good way to revisit the Hagakure.

“There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything.”

Second reading of the Hagakure, truly a manly book, if there ever was one. Yamamoto Tsunetomo came from a generation that had seen war and violence, which is why he was so clearly disappointed by the younger generation's weakness and softness, which is quite relevant in our time as well.

Hagakure: The Code of the Samurai; The Manga Edition, Yamamoto Tsunetomo, adapted by Sean Michael Wilson, et al. I read a full translation on which this manga is based several years ago, & as way of compliment, it does a very good job of illustrating (pun intended) the way of the samurai, as counterintuitive as it may sound, by reducing the verbiage & examples from the original text.

This review is for the manga adaptation by Sean Michael Wilson and Chie Kutsuwada.

Having not read the original, it's hard for me to judge this book, but taken on its own it seems to paint a rather screwed up picture of bushido. Not that there weren't some seriously screwed up elements to the samurai code.

The main thing this book left me with is a desire to read the full text to see if there are subtleties that I'm missing. After that I should be able to come back and update this review.

Update: I've now read a translation of the Hagakure by Alexander Bennett, and I have to say that this manga version seems to really distort the original by focusing so much on the most violent entries. The majority of the original deals with more mundane matters, but the manga picks out all the most violent anecdotes while ignoring those that actually make up the bulk of the original work.

Loved the "manga" presentation of excerpts from the book of Hagakure, but I did not much care for the artwork.
