CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Rilettura.

Review for complete series

The CLAMP campus offers education from kindergarten all the way to university. The campus includes all kinds of facilities which almost gives it a city-like atmosphere. The Elementary School Student Board consists of the three bright students Nokoru, Suoh and Akira who, following Nokoru's lead, decide to found the CLAMP school detectives - helpers for all the female students in need!

This is a cute manga as long as you keep in mind that it's a comedy - the way the school board is run is far from realistic. Nokoru, who despite being very intelligent, is actually pretty lazy. At least until a girl is involved - he seems to have made it his priority to make sure all girls are happy and will develop incredible strength and speed to be at the ladies' rescue. Akira, who also stars in CLAMP's Man of Many Faces, is beyond proud of all that Nokoru does and is always cheering him on. Suoh is about the most normal among these characters and tries hard to maintain order while keeping up with his friends' antics.

CLAMP School Detectives is a very episodic manga without much of an actual story behind it. For better or for worse, this is a short series consisting of only three volumes. Given the episodic nature and the lack of actual plot, a longer series would probably have been too much. But the CLAMP campus is actually a really neat crossover of at least a handful of CLAMP's works. CLAMP, of course, loves to make crossovers with all their works - unfortunately, this work was made before most of their others. I think it could have been a great series if characters from more of their other works would have had a cameo - seeing nudges to other works was really one of the best parts of this one.

It doesn't come as a surprise that CLAMP's art is also lovely in this one. The characters, all silliness and antics aside, have a lot of charm and it just delivers a beautifully drawn series with nice characters and humour that leans into the parody genre. It's neither deep nor an essential read - but it is a nice and cute story for in between or simply for those who love CLAMP.

This will probably come as no surprise, but CLAMP School Detectives is actually the first of the "CLAMP School" titles that I ever heard of, back in the early 2000s day of the Tokyopop boom. I remember it being fairly popular due to the pretty boy trio of main characters and overall the gorgeousness of CLAMP's art style combined with a fun take on detective stories, and I know it had been one I enjoyed because midway through 2017 I felt the need to hunt down all three volumes of the series to collect for myself.

As was the case with CLAMP School Defenders Duklyon (and really, with all of the CLAMP School titles,) I think it's best to approach this series and especially this first volume with a grain of salt. It's just meant to be fluffy, light-hearted fun with a slight slice-of-life element, and when you read it from that perspective, it's a great installment in this little side universe. We're introduced to Nokoru, Suoh and Akira of the CLAMP School Elementary Division Class Board (damn, what a mouthful,) as they find themselves involved in a couple of instances that require them to put their heads together and find creative solutions to save the day (and the concerns of ladies.) Nokoru, who has cameos in [I would assume] all of the CLAMP School titles, hatches the plan to start a detective agency on the CLAMP School canvas on the basis that it would be fun due to how much he enjoyed "solving" the previous two "cases" the boys got involved in.

Thus do hijinks and general wackiness ensue.

I still loved going through this first volume. It was just a fun, sweet little read. I'll say that now that I'm older, I find it just a little weird that vast swarms of older girls run around as über-fans of three boys in elementary school. I get that it's part of the gag, but while this was just something I rolled with as a teenager, I can't help but lift an eyebrow just a little at that.

A trio of impossibly perfect sixth graders solve "mysteries" related to the unhappiness of any "damsels in distress" they come across.

Look, I'm willing to suspend disbelief, but I draw the line at hanging it until it stops twitching. There is nothing interesting about perfect characters, even when a few superficial personality quirks are shoehorned in. I admit the series makes no secret of what's in store. The book description is upfront about the Mary Sue nature of the leads, and other characters often remark about the implausibility of such boys existing (while the SIXTH GRADERS are routinely doing things like conducting college level lectures to correct their teachers, embarrassing their martial arts instructors in sparring matches and shaming professional chefs into quitting by having them taste their cooking). Sorry, but hanging a lantern on it doesn't help here. Nor does it help to have a character jokingly point out how many elements are reused in the plots of the first three stories. It just makes me wonder why it wasn't fixed if the author noticed.

I was hoping the cases would elevate this beyond its issues, but no such luck. I don't mind the light nature of the mysteries nor really even the melodramatic touches. The problem is solving them all with either our leads' unnatural talents or throwing their ridiculous amounts of money at the problem. The last story seemed like it was going to break the mold a little and had a very good set up, but wound up disappointing in its resolution.

I understand the potential appeal of this type of story and humor, but overall it didn't work for me. I might still continue since the series is short and there's promise to the concept, but I'm not expecting much after this start.

... X ahí te voy...

I read this ages ago, but it was recently available on my library app, so I thought it would be fun to reread. It was decent. There's some outdated slang like "cool cat," which I found funny. In addition, the so-called town that the main characters live in sounds like an elitist utopia since only those possess talent and potential can be invited to live there. I like the connection to Clamp's other story about the young thief. It was decent. I honestly have nothing much to say. 3.5/5

This is a very silly manga. There's humor throughout. Although we do touch on dark elements (one story involves an elderly woman who's still waiting for the husband that never returned from war many years before) for the most part the story is very lighthearted. Although there aren't any fantasy elements (no magic, as far as I can tell) there is an element of the fantastical. It's also fun to see characters from previous Clamp works.

Continuing my CLAMP reading, by enjoying this oldie. I liked it enough, but am 100% I would've enjoyed it more if I read it when it was initially published. (Also, CLAMP. These are children yet...they just look like small men??? Must be the shoulders. You're better at drawing girls than boys.)

More a 3.5 than a 4.0 out of 5 book. It’s CLAMP. It’s nothing super extraordinary, art is nice, the stories or not completely generic, there is some good characterization and the color poster insert is a great touch.

Overall looking forward to reading volume 2 and 3.
