I loved the look of Oddly Normal, so I picked it up and it did not disappoint. I'm still amazed with the art style, it's so stunning with all the details and the color palettes.

And when Oddly arrives to Fignation, she has new classmates, new teachers and bewilderment new lunch menu. Oddly enough the first day of a new school in a strange going on ...

A girl makes a birthday wish in anger and her parents and her house disappear. Talk about your tantrum. She can't figure out what happens. Her grandmother plucks her out of danger and puts her under her roof. Now, Oddly must go to monster school basically. All the monsters go there and it can be a rough place like any school. Oddly must find a way to survive this new life.

The story end abruptly, not really giving us an end. I am curious and want to continue on with this cute story. I can see that young reader group loving this story. I want to get my Nephew into these. I think he would enjoy them.

If you love(d) Halloween Town as a kid (because I don't watch it now.. I'm an adult.. *eyes slowly gravitate downward* - fine, yes! I watch it still..) then you will LOVE this. It is a middle grade graphic about a half witch and her adventures.

What a blast I had reading this. The story is a mix of fantasy with a fish out of the water protagonist. Oddly Normal is a half-human half-witch who is picked on by her classmates and has completely-out-the-loop parents. After a total shit of a day which also happens to be her birthday (unfortunately I can relate to that and only wish some people to die slowly and painfully) she blows up and wishes that her parents would disappear.

Houston, we have a problem...

Her wish comes true and this is where our story seems to start. Now, Oddly only has her pseudo-hippie-witch-whatever-aunt to take care of her and she must move to Fignation, where her (witch) mother came from. Compared to Earth, Fignation is a weird place. The Fignatonians may look different than humans but they also suck. Figures.

This story read better as a trade. I started reading the issue when the came out but waiting a month between them is a pain in the ass and in this particular case I think this book loses momentum if you stop between issues. The story is not especially original but I wanted to keep turning pages to find out more. This seems like a introductory arc to Oddly's new surroundings and once she settles in a little bit I expect to know more about where the hell she sent her parents. She clearly has some sort of special powers and I want her to use them to bring the school bullies to their knees.

The art is pretty awesome: clear-lined which suits the story. The coloring is perfectly used to create juxtaposition between panels. It's vivid and bright colored and it pops up. The full or double-page panels look amazing. This is one of the best looking book I've ever seen.

The moment I finished it I wanted to have the next volume to read and that's probably the best compliment you can give a ongoing comic.

One last thing: I don't know what the deal is with Image and their kid-friend comics: the issues were A4 paper size but the trade is smaller. I want to experience the comics in the full size, Image morons!

¡Hola, mi gente! Today I'm back with a review of a middle-grade graphic novel that I expected to truly enjoy but sadly I didn't.
Oddly Normal is about a girl named, you guessed it, Oddly Normal. She's a half-witch with green hair and pointy ears that do not fit in in her school. She has no friends and is constantly getting bullied. But what happened when her parents vanish and she has to move to the one place that her mother said she shouldn't go? This is her story. It sounds interesting, right? Well, it wasn't. Practically nothing happened in this story and honestly, it was just... boring. The characters were boring, the plot was boring, and you knew who was the villain the moment you met them which took away from the thrill of wondering who was the villain. Honestly, everything about this story was bland. It pains me to say this because it's an arc—thank you Edelweiss and the publisher for this arc. Also, I am not THAT bad with arcs and I know this came out 5 years ago but I JUST got the arc—but it was just so damn boring.
The art of the world and the creatures that live in it was great but the art of the main characters was just meh.
I am giving this book two stars and that's only because I don't hate the book. Do I recommend it? I hate to say it but no.

I liked this but I was not bowled over by it. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to believe that a teacher would ask other students to cause bodily harm to another student. Surely there are rules even in made up fictional universes.

The trials of middle school are front and center in Otis Frampton’s “Oddly Normal, Book 1”, but unlike other young adult reads the young protagonist just can’t find any luck in either our world or the realm of Fignation. As a fan of Otis’ artwork I’ve known about his relaunch of this series for a few years, but I wish I had grabbed this book earlier than I did.

Oddly Normal, the non-magical daughter of a witch and a normal human, has green hair and pointy ears thus subjecting her to middle school hell. On her 10th birthday she wishes her parents would go away and strangely enough they do. Whisked away to her mother’s home realm of Fignation by her Great Aunt, Oddly enters a new school and finds herself back in middle school hell because instead of being a half-witch in the real world, she is a half-human in the imaginary world. And then she barely escapes an attack on her life.

This young adult graphic novel is not another story in which an social outcast goes to a new school and becomes someone special, it’s a story in which a social outcast goes to a new school and is still a social outcast…if not worse. The artwork and story by Frampton are both excellent and will draw any young reader in because at some time in our younger days we felt like social outcasts, but it seems that poor Oddly has it worse and that makes the reader want to see her overcome things and discover what happened to her parents.

If the ‘young adult’ tag puts you off personally from reading “Oddly Normal” then direct a middle school that you know towards this book and let them follow along as a green-haired, pointy-eared 10 year old tries to navigate not one, but two middle schools in which doesn’t fit.

I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this story. An odd girl not fitting in in the normal world, who accidentally changes everything and ends up being a normal girl in an odd world who doesn't necessarily fit in. It is a great premise for a story, even if it has been done before. Oddly, the main character, ends up in a land that is based roughly on someone/anyone's figment of imagination. This world is beautiful illustrated and elaborately built upon.

This volume is a little more than an introduction, and definitely left me wanting more. In a land based on imagination, the possibilities of world-building and story-telling are limitless. Well done Otis Frampton, looking forward to more!

Fairly typical middle-grade story about a girl caught between two worlds and ostracized by both. Art is cute but nothing to write home about. Volume one gets through the set-up but not very far into the plot.

Right when the story started the book ended. We (and the system) do not have book two so it seems kind of sad to tempt with book 1 and not have book 2 readily available. But it was cute.

“It’s the eyes. It’s the staring. Stick and stones and all that… I’m numb to it all. But I’ll never get used to the staring.”

STORY:
Oddly Normal by Otis Frampton (128 pages), the main character’s name, by the way, is about a girl who isn’t normal. Shocker. She’s half-witch from her mom’s side, which somehow appears in the form of green hair and elf ears. Oddly doesn’t fit in at school because kids can be cruel. When her magical auntie offers to take her Fignation, the magical world her mom is from, she jumps at the chance to be with other like-minded weird kids. Well, if you didn’t know she doesn’t fit in at Fignation’s supernatural school either. In a very cliché way, she does find solace with the school’s band of misfits, a hunchback, Frankenstein, and ghost.

ART:
I think the cartoon style works well, though Oddly’s head is huge compared to her body. I wish Oddly’s face was a bit more expressive. I love the color direction, as each page has a different color scheme. The backgrounds are nice and imaginative with fluffy cotton trees and other fantasy elements.

CHARACTERS:
I’ve seen characters like Oddly before, who are misunderstood and come from a magical lineage. Nothing about Oddly stands out to me, but I’m sympathetic to her plight. She’s basically been bullied her entire life, and it realistically wears on her. Her parents are too dense for their own good and don’t understand their baby’s problems. Pretty relatable! Her catchphrase “figures” is funny too.

For the first volume, there isn’t much character exploration besides Oddly, which makes sense. Readers should connect with the first character before others are introduced. Still, the green guy of the bully crew with the black cat (I think his supernatural lore is plant-based) is interesting. He’s a jerk of course because all the kids at Oddly’s schools lack common decency, but something about him captured my eye. Maybe it’s his design? Every other character looks basic, but the green guy looks stylish! And, he has a magical animal buddy, which I always love.

Also, Misty McCloud is just adorable. Sweetest ghost ever!

OVERALL:
Would I have read this as an actual novel? Nah. For me, without the graphics, I would have passed on this title. I want the characters to be fleshed out more as well. The bullies of the school seem to be mean just for the sake of meanness. I know kids don’t need a reason to pick on someone, but Oddly’s supernatural bullies are just vicious. Sadly the nice misfits are nice for the sake of niceness too. Still, I think this is a good read for reluctant readers because it’s not too plot-heavy and most children can relate to Oddly feeling like an outsider.

Life is not good for Oddly Normal (who was named after her great-aunt.) As the product of a human/witch marriage, her green hair and pointed ears make her stand out in her small town elementary school. She’s constantly bullied and treated as a freak. Worse, her parents seem oblivious to just how miserable she really is.

This comes to a head on Oddly’s tenth birthday, when none of the kids her parents made her invite bother to come, only using the moment to further bully her. And then her parents refuse to understand the situation, coming up with excuses for how this isn’t actually happening. It’s no wonder that Oddly makes a wish that they would both disappear. It’s slightly more of a wonder that the wish seems to work, as she’s never shown any magical aptitude before.

While trying to work out what actually happened, Oddly’s aunt takes her to Fignation, the “imaginary” world Oddly’s mother came from. She enrolls her niece in Menagerie Middle School, and Oddly thinks that maybe here she won’t be treated like a freak. Small hope of that–though there do seem to be some kids who aren’t completely horrible. Of course they’re the unpopular, uncool ones. Worse, at least one of the teachers seems to be out to get Oddly for reasons that aren’t exactly clear.

This Image comic book series is by one of the people who creates the How It Should Have Ended webtoons. The first volume collects the first five issues, out of six published as of this writing.

A lot of kids will identify with Oddly; feeling like they’re persecuted for their minor differences; and quite a few older readers will remember the same feelings. It’s made Oddly a somewhat surly loner who’s only sympathetic because she’s the underdog. Given some power, she could easily turn Carrie on her peers. (The sixth issue shows that Oddly has more in common with her mother in that respect than she might have guessed.

The other characters are fairly stock, with no one really stepping outside their stereotypical roles yet. The series is also suffering from considerable decompression, and the first five issues feel less than a complete story, or even a full five chapters.

I’d say that it would be a good idea for Oddly to succeed at something soon, or show some useful skills or personality traits. As is, she’s just a victim and pinball, bouncing from one miserable event to the next.

The art isn’t bad, but the writing needs to step up. Keep an eye on this series, and if it improves come back and read this.

I first read this book on October 8, 2015.
I reread it around/about November 18, 2016.

The below review was written after my first reading, when only this book one was released.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It was great fun! Oddly Normal (great name!) is a young girl with a witch from Fignation for a mother, so she's a half-witch. On her birthday, she makes a wish that, unfortunately for her and her parents, comes true. So her Auntie transfers her to Fignation, where Oddly joins a new middle school.

Hoping to no longer be a freak, Oddly soon has her hopes dashed as, to the resident kids of Fignation, being from the real world makes her a freak. The poor kid just can't win.

She makes friends with some of her fellow students at lunch: Misty McCloud (ghost), Reggie (think Frankenstein's monster), and a stereotypical-Igor-looking type named Ragnar Theopolis (Reggie's half-brother). But the school's bullies already have it out for her and get her in trouble.

Rescued from detention with Dungeon Master Dave by Mister Crabula, who has a rather cryptic - for Oddly - warning for her, she walks home...in the dark because the sun has a schedule to keep. In the woods, she's met by the Vamp boy and his werewolf sidekicks.

They say they're earning extra credit (I don't think I like Mr. Harrison Gooseberry) and the werewolves change and chase her. Reggie distracts them and tells Oddly to run and...the book ends.

That's it.

Oddly is running for her life and...

The End.

ARGH!!!

It's a good thing I like this story and wanted to read more even before being thrown off a cliff in the end. But I really hate the cliffhanger ending. Where's the next volume and how soon can I get it???

What?!?! Book 2 isn't going to be released until November 5, 2015?! ARGH!!!

Meet Oddly Normal. A little odd, a little normal, half witch and half human. And that alone should give you an idea about her life. As you can probably guess being a green haired, pointy eared young girl in middle school certainly wont win her any popularity contests. Par for the course, Oddly is tormented incessantly by her schoolmates. And to top it off her parents don't understand.

So, on her 10th birthday she has had enough of being tormented at school, not having any friends, and her parents in their own little world. Oddly makes a wish for her parents to disappear.... POOF!! Gone are her parents, and even her house.

Not long after, her Auntie shows up and sweeps Oddly away to Fignation, a world you and I will never get to see... so don't try looking for it on a map, and even more unusual than Oddly. But it turns out that even in Fignation she doesn't quite fit in.

First of all I cant get over the amazing illustrations. They are so vibrant and colorful. I didn't know what I expected Fignation to look like but the artistry was brilliant. The illustrations brought such exciting scenery and characters. there were so many different creatures and each one was so incredibly unique. Definitely a winning formula here!

Graphics are great, but the story is nothing original. Oddly Normal is half witch. She doesn't fit in at school. She just wants to be normal. In a moment of frustration she wishes her parents would go away. And they do. Her aunts shows up, late for her birthday, and whisks her away to Fignation, as in figment of your imagination. It's a crazy place and Oddly thinks she'll finally fit in. Nope. School is no different than back on earth. She still ends up with the losers and there's still the requisite bully.

It's yet another book about wanting to fit in, except with this strange fantasy twist that didn't work for me at all. Oddly is too passive. She doesn't say or do much in the book. She just stands around and lets it all happen without much emotion. I couldn't connect. And most frustrating of all is that the book just stops in the middle of a scene. Not interested in seeing how it plays out in book 2.

Story: 5 stars
Art: 5 stars

Excellent serialized comic for middle schoolers. This first graphic novel aggregates the first five issues.

The fantasy world is well developed and incorporates some common tropes without feeling like a re-hash of the same old stuff. Interesting story line. Terrific art.

Very universal middle grade themes. Children of the targeted age group will relate to the feelings of not fitting in and being the outcast. And what kid doesn't wish his/her parents would disappear at some point(s) in his/her life?

Oddly Normal is a half-witch living in the human world. In this world, she is an outcast because of her pointed ears and green hair. She wishes for nothing more than to be considered normal. When her parents mysteriously disappear, Oddly goes to live with her aunt in Fignation, the magic world where her mother was born. Oddly thought that she had finally found a place where she fit in, but oddly enough she is considered too normal. Now Oddly is left trying to find her parents and fight off the bullies at school. This is a great middle grade comic and we had a blast reading it!

My 14-year-old friend has recommended another great series!

Oddly Normal is the daughter of a mixed marriage: her mother is a witch and her father is a "regular" human. She has a little trouble fitting in at school. She has been told she doesn't have any magical powers, but she accidentally sets off--well, I am not sure what it is! Luckily, her aunt shows up and helps her out. Oh, that is her aunt who is her mother's sister. Yep. Another witch. They go off to another "place," and Oddly hopes she will fit in better with people more like her. Nope.

I can't wait for the next book!

Kind of like a watered down Sabrina the Teenage Witch + Monster High. I know it's for kids. I wish the characterization had been deeper.

Reread 6/24/2016: On reread, I'm liking this a lot more. The characters/monsters in the background are quite detailed and inventive and the art seems readymade for animation. The plot is well paced and is instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been that outsider kid.

I love the artwork, and the premise. It was kind of depressing overall, though, as our heroine's dreams of fitting in are currently dashed... I'm hoping things will look up a bit for her in the next collection, as we maybe find out

*spoiler alert*

where her parents have disappeared to, and why she's apparently being targeted for bullying by a teacher...

I work at a middle school. The last week I've started checking out random books from the library to read during my down time. This YA series from Image is a fun ride. Not anything mindblowing for me, but a fun little read to pass the time. Common themes for a YA series, but I'm a sucker for fantasy and magic type stories so I enjoyed it regardless.
