For a game that doesn't explain how to play it (even what the icons on the HUD mean!) and does not even have an instruction manual (the digital one doesn't count), this guide is pretty essential. The problem is that this guide runs into the same problems as most gaming guides: it has no idea how it's supposed to be used. There are long lists of quests and items, but the only information accompanying them is the info that you can read straight from playing the game. There is no further indication on how to finish non-affinity quests, no specific locations on where to find monsters (naming the continent is completely unhelpful), where to find quest-specific special items, or even which pages things are on. There are whole lists that are in only some vague order. The authors explain this away as allowing the player to decide how to play the game, and that this book is a reference, but half of what I needed wasn't easy to find or even listed. I ended up augmenting the book with info I found online, but that defeats the purpose of getting the thing.

One final gripe: this guide continues the tradition of giving little guidance on skill - how to play the game better. Most guides suggest that the fun of games is to discover "your own play style", but then don't call these books guides. Other guides have in-depth info on how the system functions (FFXIII guides come to mind). I would have loved some discussion about switching weapons to keep the flow of battle going, or some suggested builds, or how to use Voices more effectively on those builds. But we just get lists. There is so much to do to help or broaden gamers' experiences (or pull them out of ruts), but so few guides do these things. Really, this guide is basically useless, which is a pity for a game that could Garner a ton of fun discussion.

I love the Xeno-games for what they are, but trying to figure out where to find things for certain quests can often require a trip to Google. And, for Xenoblade, this means the terrible, awful, ad-filled, browser-crashing Fandom site (please visit the Xeno-wiki instead).

My favorite part about this book was how handy it was for NOT having to go to Fandom for every little thing. The collectibles guide and guide to completion hexagons were amazing as references and it was nice to be able to look up an enemy to gauge its level before trekking out to find it.

Unfortunately, the book is riddled with errors. Some of these errors are actually really interesting and indicate the early build of the game that the guide writers used, such as the mislabeling of the "To Serve a Nopon" mission as "Birthday Boy" in two different places. Another one reveals that Phog's character name in the UI was "Phog Christoph" as this is in both screenshots of the game and in the text (in the released game, he's just labeled as "Phog"). There are also a few affinity missions that have actions listed that you need to take that don't exist in the finished game at all.

A lot of the errors are misleading which is problematic and requires me to turn to the Internet in confusion. Times might be incorrectly listed, such as listing "morning" when it should be "early morning". There are numerous misspellings and incorrect picture placements. These really hurt what the guide could have been and it's not clear if it was due to an earlier build or a lackadaisical editor/writer.

All in all, very helpful to have, but by no means a panacea for your Xenoblade X woes.
