Em Davidson is a curvy, never-married, 43-year-old Internet security analyst who has been working at the wrong job, living in the wrong house, and involved with the wrong man for about 10 years too long. All she wants is a challenging career, her very own home, and an age-appropriate Mister Ideal who will make her toes curl when he kisses her.

Mick Brennan is a bearded, tattooed widower of 20-plus years who thinks, maybe, just maybe, he might be ready to dip his foot back in the dating pool. He might not know exactly what he’s looking for in a relationship, but he knows he doesn’t want a girl half his age.

When Em moves into her dream home, she had no idea that her downstairs neighbor could be her Mister Ideal. When Mick meets his talkative upstairs neighbor, he’s more intrigued by her than he has been in any other woman in two decades.

Can these two lonely people overcome the wounds of their pasts to discover love again?

This contemporary/second-time contains explicit sexual situations and graphic language.

I think I requested this book because I got all excited seeing it was going to have characters that weren't young enough to make me annoyed.
Over forty year old characters that were still hot and wanting the sexuals!

Em actually wasn't brainless. She was smart, curvy and cursed like a sailor. Then you add in Mick, a big old man with tattoos and attitude. He also had a beard but I'll forgive him that.
They both are like-able..then you throw in their best friends who I liked even more that I liked them.
Heck yes.

They meet by Em going to work for Mick's best friend. Then she moves into the loft above Mick, stuff just sorta all falls together in too many ways for this couple. It was all so..meant to be stuffy.
That kind of stuff can get old quick.

It does take forever and fifty days for the sexuals. There is definitely no insta-loving in this book.

There is some story line that just falls into place way too easily though. Problem arises? Perfect solution happens.

Yes, for any trolling...I know they both had hard lives but this was just too much.

Then the frigging characters kept winking at each other. I actually counted five winks on two pages. I hate that shit. You betta have something in your eye if you are doing that shit that much. Why does this happen so much in romance books? It's distracting! Maybe I live a sheltered life because I don't know anyone with that many eye problems.

So overall..I didn't hate this book (even if it sounds like I did)..I didn't love it either though. I'm going for a 2 stars. It was aight.

4 Grown Up Lives & Loves Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
I am going to say something shocking...not everyone reading romance is in that 20 to 30-year-old range...Yes, I know... it is staggering how many readers may actually be interested in a romance about those who are not out of college, just starting to embark on their careers.... or those who maybe are closer to 30 then they would like and still haven't found their guy...

Yes, those stories are worth reading and we all do... but every once in a while... it is refreshing to meet 2 grown-ass people who have lived lives and have the chance to find love in spite of it... People who are established in their careers, whether they are fascinating or not... who had experienced pain and joy and are ripe for something more...oh and older than 35.

In A Bad Bit Nice by Josie Kerr, we have just that; two main characters who are in their 40's, have established lives and through a set of circumstances met and develop into a wonderful love story.

These two take things slow;
the affection, friendship, and relationship grows in real-time, not the insta- love way. Both have backstories which bring a type of understanding of what is important in life. Neither is cocky or arrogant... they both have a type of innocence in starting this yet at the same time...get very sexy with want and desire.

We get a full plot of lost siblings, an ex-boyfriend going off the deep end, and another budding romance between secondary friends which should be very entertaining.

A fun thing was the fact was our main man was bearded, tattooed, tall, lean, and extremely sexy. He may have been out of action for a while but had No Worries in delivering the goods...and oh my, they were soooooooooo good.

Our gal was professionally smart but lacked the personal perception of just how great she was...Once she left her ex, she embarked on a healthier way of treating herself. Her bonding and becoming close with her new fella brought out the best in her. The two of them were perfect. No out of control angst... no miscommunication; just learning to love again for our man and being able to accept how to be treated right for her.

The bonus was the phrasing and ways of our guy and his best friend. One was Irish, the other from Newfoundland. The Irish played a substantial part in the dialogue. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it didn't feel stuck in or unnatural. Of Course...I am not Irish so I could be wrong...

This is the first book and overall I was pleased with the experience. I certainly hope Josie Kerr follows up with at least two books, as I can see friends and siblings having their own books.

Favorite Quotes:

“Em, if I had a rack like yours, I would be topless as much as possible.”

“I know it’s only been a week or so, but goddammit, you’re super smart, crazy caring, and hot like fire and I think I could love you, so you need to kiss me or tell me to utterly and completely fuck off. Either way, put me out of my misery.”

“Mick, honey, what you did to me earlier? If you’d been more expert at it, I seriously think I would have lost consciousness.”

“Rory, don’t do anything that will get you sent to prison, because I am absolutely not having sex in a trailer!”

“I always knew that Em, Miss National Merit Finalist Summa Cum Everything Smarty Pants, would end up with a tattooed brawler.”

My Review:

This is undoubtedly my favorite type of book and I whole-heartedly adored this story from start to finish. I was already marveling at the easy flow and crisp humor as I read the first page. My eyes nearly popped from their sockets - like Roger Rabbit’s - when I discovered this exceptional tome was the author’s first novel. I want to rave about its merits.

The story and writing were unique, well-crafted, highly entertaining, and plucked each emotion with surprising depth. I smirked, snorted, gasped, fanned myself, and at other times - I teared up and… okay… maybe sobbed a little bit. The characters were middle-aged, adorable, broken, lovable, flawed, thoughtful, and would most likely be easily overlooked in real life. Moreover, I absolutely must love a woman in her forties who babbles when she is nervous, swears so creatively, just recently bought her first pair of “magical panties,” and often looks at events as “a sign.”

This book was fantastic. It was humorous, insightful, thoughtful, clever, and witty. I enjoyed the characters’ teasing, fun banter, and supportive relationships. The love story was sweet, endearing, and so smokin’ hot my kindle was sizzling. First novel or 100th, Josie Kerr has mad skills and is definitely one to watch.

Poignant romance featuring grown adults (not another New Adult romance!)

Poignant romance featuring grown adults (not another New Adult romance!)

Poignant, well crafted story with multiple plot lines. Author Josie Kerr did a very nice job with her 1st novel and lovingly created the world of Em and Mick, both in their forties, who fall in love after heartache, disappointment and grief.

Very satisfying. Ms. Kerr reminded me how satisfying and sexy a romance can be with mature adults who are living in the real world where love doesn't always work out the first time. The characters grapple with some very serious issues, for ex., the male lead faced terrible child abuse and trauma and the female lead also faced loneliness and loss. The novel also shows how people can overcome or move on from such loss by the love of friends and family.

A few characters are first or second Irish immigrants so there is a smattering of Irish/Gaelic slang, as well as some boxing dens, MMA fighters and other interesting elements. These include restored Victorian houses, a curvy nerdy girl who loves books and antiques, a hero who suffered terribly growing up but is kind and mentors kids like him and a lot of people in many walks of life who are basically good people.

I will definitely look out for the author's next book.

ARC provided by Netgalley

I couldn't take to the writing style in this book. I don't like when there are numerous POV's in one chapter and that is how this author writes.

I also didn't like that Em calls Mick 'sugar'. I've read that term of endearment too many times in romance novels but it is always said by the hero so I associate it with the male saying it, not the female and when she kept calling him it during the sex scenes, I just found it off putting. Mick calls Em 'ducky'.

I liked Mick, he's been through a lot but I wasn't sure about Em's character. I'm sure others will love this kind of story but I found it dragged in places and the writing style was just not for me.

Lots of fun. Nice to have a female protagonist with a non-fluffy job. Best portrayal of consent I've read yet.

There were a number of things I enjoyed about this book and a few I didn't.

Mick was a sweetie and, whenever she didn't mention his beard, he was fabulous. I don't go for beards. Anytime it came up in a passage Duck Dynasty would flash through my mind and that cooled things down quite a lot. Beard women rejoice, though!

Mick and Em had a slow boil going on that went to ridiculous lengths. Slow boil romances are the best, but the start of this one felt oddly drawn-out. After they'd met several times and knew they were interested neither of them approached the other for quite a while. This slow pacing made the middle of the book sag a bit. In the end, however, all was good, so it may be a "mileage may vary" situation.

Romances with people who aren't in their mid-to-late twenties or early thirties are great. Their characters having experienced more life gives writers the opportunity to give them more depth and I'm glad to see the growing trend.

A major niggle for me was the situation with Jesse's baby at the end. Em's reaction felt off.

I got an Arc from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

I started reading that with doubts. I normally don't like mature characters in my story. I ended up wanting to meet a guy with tattoos, beard, long hair and generous heart.

I loved Me, I adored Mick, I looooooved Ashley and Rory, they were so funny.
I want MORE MORE MORE of of JK.

3.5 stars. Nice.

I liked this book. I was a little concerned with the hero who’d been grieving his deceased wife for about 20yrs and had a massive tattoo of her on his chest, but somehow it worked for me. The couple were good for each other. There were a few “that kind of coincidence only happens in romance novels” moments, but overall it was a good read.

Wow!!!
Em is finally ready to move on with her life. Mick is still stuck in the past.
While they try to work through all their problems, she has been dealing with her ex. Will they be able to move past it all?
There is so much that could be said but that would lead to spoilers and that isn't any fun. I hope you love this story as much as I did.

This was truly a second chance story in many aspects. Not only did the main characters Em and Mick play the perfect roles of broken but not lost hearts, the second and third characters like family and friends made the storyline complete. The cohesive elements of storytelling from the characters past and present made for great drama, and conclusion. This story fit perfectly in every way. I truly enjoyed every page. Now I understand what the title of this book means lol!

I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Mick, Em, Rory, Ashley, and the secondary cast were good, solid characters. Mick's backstory was heartbreaking, and I shed a few tears for him. The basic plot was really good, and I cared about these characters. My biggest issue was the story got bogged down in too many details, scenes that didn't move the story along, and several unrealistic scenarios. I think this book would benefit from a little editing and tightening up.

This book goes to show you that you do have a life after forty and sometimes good things come to those who wait, or should I say sometimes there are second chances to a happy ending. It all depends on how you handle situations and taking that first step forward in life. Josie Kerr did a great job of introducing us to these brilliant characters who do just that, take that leap of faith.

We meet Em who is not doing too good at work and her relationship, not because of her mind you but because of her surroundings and the people around her. There’s only one thing to do and that’s to leave it all behind and start something new, start doing what you’ve been wanting to do forever and with that will come good things, at least she hopes they will. Which let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a good book if good things didn’t happen to come her way, especially in the form of one very attractive neighbor. Mick is living day by day and just surviving, not really looking for anything or anyone especially after the life and luck he’s had in life (bad luck). He just wants to keep going and nothing more, that is until he meets his new neighbor and a spark flies, a spark he hasn’t felt in years. There is life after tragedy.

The chemistry between the two main characters, and let’s face it everyone in this book, is outstanding. I love the little bit of Irish and other nuances in this book, it’s always good to learn new phrases here and there. After all a bad bit nice, has an interesting ring to it, right? So yes not only is there chemistry between Em and Mick but also between their best friends, they can make it a party! There are some real issues throughout the book it’s not all about getting down to business in the best sense of the word, there is history that is being dealt with on both ends. Sometimes the things you go through in life are what make you who you are though, and I think it works out for them but it’s a struggle to get there.

Overall I thought this was a great book and a really great start to a series, sure they’ve all been printed already but I’m interested and I’m jumping in full force and if you haven’t already I suggest you do too. Love the characters. Great story plot, love the couple and the setting. There was a bit of action, drama, great friendships, bad exes and sad stories. Overall kept me wanting to read it in one sitting!

Interesting name.

Way to make a first impression. Bahaha!

Seriously??? She has to dress up to go to work in the middle of the night?

This idiot would be a terrible father.

She's very naive for her age.

What happened to her to send her to the hospital?

He's been a widower for twenty years and still wears his ring? Aw, that's sweet.

Wow, her parents really were old.

This could be a great center with these two running it.

Glad I'm not the only messy eater around.

Oh, Ashley! Don't worry, I was the same way when I met Hugh Jackman.

Okay, this might be kismet. I hope it's him.

Ooh, why does this Sophie hate Mick?

She wasted years on this douche?

Oh God, he lost his wife and his baby sons?

I have never heard of ska, or any of these songs. I'm learning a lot. Except "The Hills of Connemara"; I do know that one.

FOUR BABIES??? Omigawd, how did he manage to live through the pain?

Yum. She should open a restaurant.

They could always adopt.

Bahaha, Sheila, way to embarrass them!

I hope Tripp spends most of his life in jail.

A shame that two people had to die, but at least they got something good out of it.

Not for me

This is the first book I've read by this author. The overall storyline was decent, but it was too random. Two best friends are getting ready to go out and they're going to "look for hot Irishmen". In Atlanta. There just happens to be a hot Irishman in the bar they go to, along with his hot friend, who is Canadian but of apparently Irish heritage. I don't think that's actually stated anywhere, but it's implied by all of the names in his family. There are a lot of random phrases tossed around in the dialogue, some apparently Irish, some from Newfoundland, and when the heroine suddenly starts saying " Sugar" almost once per page (off and on, so randomly), we have "Southern" thrown in there as well. The point of view changes, also randomly, sometimes right in the middle of a scene, not just between the two main characters, but almost any character, any time. I was confused in the beginning about which "hot" guy was going to be the main love interest. The whole thing just felt like a stream of consciousness first draft, written for the author to get all if her ideas down on paper, but in need of a good editor to whip it into shape.

Em and Mick – what a couple! Both are nurturers that need nurturing and might just find their perfect companion in one another.

I liked the fact that they were both mature adults with similar needs and yet neither is ready, willing or able to leap into an instant relationship. The slow build was great. Both characters are there for one another as friends before they become more. Both have flaws or issues that make them more human. The communication between Em and Mick was fun to listen in on. Em is assertive when she needs to be and yet giving and caring – just as Mick is. Both are well rounded with interests outside their friendship and willing to bring the other person into their lives bit by bit. Family, community service, friendship and so much more are present in this book with a cast of characters that makes me believe this could easily become the first in a series of wonderful books!

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

First I would like to say I was a bit confused when started the book because I misread the synopsis, I thought that Mick the H was 20years older than Em the h. But in fact he was a widower for 20 years, so he was only a few years older than Em, either way it doesn't matter to me, but I felt I had to clarify that point. This book was good but slow, slow in a good way, I really liked the fact that Em and Mick took their time to get to know each other. I also like the really enjoyed getting to know Em and Mick, their backgrounds, their emotions, I really felt like I knew them. The secondary characters were good and I'm sure will have their own stories. Lastly I'm glad there wasn't a lot of relationship drama. My only small point of contention was I found the sex scenes a bit to clinical, it sounds weird as I say this but I figure the author might want to know. Of course it could just be me.

This is a romance for the more mature reader. – not a 17 year old or a rising 30 but a rising 40 and then some heroine.
The heroine is ‘geeky’ – so is her boyfriend – and she wears glasses – and she is both curvy and still very lusty. According to some of her acquaintances she has a very foul mouth too...
In other words a woman with faults – someone human and even normal.
She has had a long term relationship – no kids – with h r boss at work – one that he totally exploits, ad also psychologically abuses her within it. Undermining her self-worth and making her feel less than she is.
So one day she decides to cut her losses – and so the story starts.
There is an interesting use of language and idioms in this book which makes it fun to read, and enhances the romantic story-line.
I enjoyed this style of writing and look forward to more by this author.

I loved this book! A forty-something that falls in love realistically with another forty-something, be still my beating heart! The people in this book were not all fake, plastic, and sparkles...what a refreshing and fantastic story! I loved Em, hated Tripp, and loved Rory, Ashley, and especially Mick. The descriptions, locations, and meanings of the tattoos were wonderfully real. The attraction between Em and Mick didn't immediately jump into bed, which was also a nice change. I enjoyed the sayings and phrases Mick and Rory both used (as well as Rory's parents!) that reminded us they were not typical "Americans". I can't say enough positive about this story! I will definitely be in line to read additional books in this series.

received this book courtesy of Netgalley - part of the Book Enthusiast Promotions for the 30 Day Reading Indie challenge
The first thing that drew me to this book was that the characters were older. They were both in their 40s. They had experienced life and new but both had come to a crossroads. Mick has been a widower for over 20 years. He was just at the point of taking off his wedding band. Em had been dating a man for the past 10 years. That relationship was dead in the water. It was going nowhere. When they meet there are sparks but they take things slow. The story was sweet with some emotional scenes when going into their pasts. The characters were fun. the only issue I have was the Irish slang thrown in. It was a little distracting to me.

This story is remarkably unique. It follows Em and Mick - two 40-somethings who've convinced themselves they're single for life.

But Fate, however, being the nosy meddler that she is, has different plans for these two.

It starts with a house. Happenstance roommates, woven into friends and then much more.

Both Em and Mick are cautious and skeptical about having feelings for one another. They've both lived lives that have taught them a thing or two about deceit and heartache. But don't let their age fool you into thinking this book will be lacking, or deter you from reading their great story. There's humor, love from many angles, definite hotness, maybe a few tears and even a twist or two.

It's a refreshing story and a true page turner! You will not be disappointed!

I received this Book in return for an honest review. Let me tell you, this book will have you hooked from start to finish. I love the main characters Mickey and Em. I was in so many emotions because of them, and love them all. From laughing, teary, angry, happy, and many more. This is about two 40 something year olds, that find each other and because of their past mainly one of them. It's rocky for them in the beginning. Rory and Ashley so love those two as well. I loved all of the characters except for two (not naming them) you will have to read to find out. I totally recommend this book. Its a must read. So sad that it ended.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I'm not a typical romance reader, but I enjoy chick lit from time to time and this wasn't too far away from that. I liked the characters and the plot in general.

A couple of quibbles:
My purchased copy from Amazon had editing marks left in. That was distracting.

The characters in the story say each other's names waaaay too much in conversation, like directly to each other. "Mick, I.." "Well, you know, Em..." "But Mick!" I eventually was kind of gritting my teeth over it. That really didn't feel natural.

Mick's backstory was a bit too melodramatic for my taste.

But, all in all, I still give it a solid 4 stars.

This was a good book. I was up late just so I could finish this book because I had to know how it ended for them. Both have pain in their past that the other helps heal. They get their happy ending. I loved their connection. I also loved the secondary characters. Hopefully, they will get their stories as well?! I really loved how their story ended. This was good.

3.75 stars. I enjoyed this book. I loved that the characters are in their early 40s and had life experiences both good and bad. I adored sweet Mick and enjoyed sassy Em. The beginning dragged a bit for me but once the details of lives unfolded I didn't want to put it down. Loved the secondary characters too. Even though it's a standalone I Can't wait for next book and hopefully get more of Mick and Em.

A bad bit nice, a second chance neighbors book series, book 1, written by Josie Kerr.

This book was fun, sexy and the best part, the characters were “older” not in the teens anymore, liked that a lot.

Not a winner

This book was a DNF. The writing was not especially cohesive, it might’ve benefited from a better/an editor. The first chapters have perspective shifts that caused me to stop and reread them, as it was difficult to try to determine from whose point of view they were written.
