Stabbed. Burned by a dragon. Abandoned for the windrocs to pick over. The traitor Ra'aba tried to silence Hualiama forever, but he reckoned without the strength of a dragonet's paw and the courage of a girl who refused to die. Only an extraordinary friendship will save Hualiama's beloved kingdom of Fra'anior and restore the king to the Onyx Throne. Flicker, the valiant dragonet. Hualiama, a foundling, adopted into the royal family. The power of a friendship which paid the ultimate price. This is the tale of Hualiama Dragonfriend and a love which became legend.
Marc is a South African-born dragon masquerading as an author, who loves writing about dragons and Africa, preferably both at the same time. He's the author of over 40 fantasy books in 5 languages including 10 rip-roaring dragon fantasy bestsellers.
His latest releases are Khyrial and the King, an absorbing Fantasy Romance and the hilarious epic fantasy Call me Dragon which won gold in the 2021 IPPY Book Awards for best Fantasy novel.
When he's not writing about Africa or dragons Marc can be found travelling to remote locations. He thinks there's nothing better than standing on a mountaintop wondering what lies over the next horizon.
Dragonfriend (Dragonfriend #1) by Marc Secchia is such an awesome dragon book, probably the best since The Pern series came out. I fell in love with it right away and it lasted right through to the sobbing end. I have the next book ready. It had all my emotions on a roller coaster ride, in a good way. What a wonderful imagination! There is humor, suspense, compassion, anger, pain, happiness, joy, love, hate, and so much more in this great fantasy. I felt I was there. There was also fighting, battles, struggles, adventure, and lots of danger to go along with the few pleasant moments. Truly, one great book, going in my favorites!
Thanks to Netgalley and Patchwork Press for giving me this book to review.
Lia’s life changes forever when the traitor Ra’aba takes over her adoptive fahter’s throne and pushes her of the side of a dragonship. She would have fallen to her death if it hadn’t been for Flicker, a green dragonet who saved her and then treated her wounds. She is desperate to return home so that she can defeat Ra’aba and restore the king to the Onyx throne but what will happen when the dragons find out that she has been recovering on their island?
Dragonfriend is a fantasy novel which started strong but soon got confusing and the pace was slow. I felt that there were too many plot points going on at once and I was unsure what I should be focusing on.
Lia is brave and protective but I didn’t really care about her or what happened to her adoptive family and I was really unsure why she was standing up for her abusive parent. Flicker was a cute character who was fun and adorable but also had a very big ego and could be annoying.
I felt Dragonfriend had potential but I could not get into it and DNF at 42%.
You could use any of those words to describe Dragonfriend but in truth to do this book justice you’d have to use them all. It is so many different things woven together into one book that you can’t help but fall in love with Hualiama as well as her companions Flicker (the dragonet) and Grandion (the dragon).
Hualiama is one of those characters that you’ll never forget after finishing the book. In the beginning she’s nothing but a royal bastard, the half-daughter of the king who stands up to his captain-of-the-guard, the usurper of the Onyx Throne. She doesn’t even particularly like her father but she likes Ra’aba even less and for her trouble she gets her back and stomach sliced open before being tossed off the Dragonship to die. But thanks to Flicker breaking her fall, carrying her to safety and patching her up, Hualiama isn’t so easy to get rid of. (If you don’t know, dragonets aren’t much bigger than a couple of feet long and just a little bigger in wingspan so for Flicker to carry a human, even a tiny one, it was a huge sacrifice on his part.) As Flicker nurses her back to health and teaches her to speak in a civilized manner—Dragonish, of course—she grows stronger and more and more determined to seek revenge against the man who deposed her family. No one in her family save for her adoptive mother may like her, but Hualiama loves them with a fierce, protective sort of love that leads her to the gates of hell and back in her quest.
What I found really interesting about Dragonfriend is that it’s set 425 years before the ‘main series’, Shapeshifter Dragons. It’s set almost 275 years before the spin-off series, Shapeshifter Dragon Legends. So all of the technology that’s introduced first in Legends and then in the main series is just in its infancy. There are no meriatite-fuelled Dragonships; they’re powered by the back-breaker, the machine that soldiers have to pedal in order to keep the ship moving. Dragons and humans have no contact with one another whereas in Legends it’s the peak of Dragon Riders and in the main series the Dragon Rider era has waned and dragons are hunted. You really don’t have to read Aranya and Shadow Dragon from the main series or The Pygmy Dragon from the spin-off in order to appreciate Dragonfriend, but it does make the whole experience more enjoyable. However, if you start with Dragonfriend, go to The Pygmy Dragon and then move on to Aranya and Shadow Dragon, you’ll actually be reading the series in the in-universe chronological order. So really, either way works and whether this is your first Marc Secchia book or not, you’ll really appreciate the sheer amount of detail he puts into all of his world-building.
One of the things that constantly surprises me is Marc Secchia’s ability to write from a female perspective so believably. He creates these amazingly strong characters but they’re not all Action Girls! Hualiama tries to fight but is hopelessly clumsy and has to really, really work at it. Pip from The Pygmy Dragon was born gifted at fighting but is at a huge disadvantage because of her small size. Aranya is better than Hualiama but that’s because her father made absolutely sure she became good at fighting whereas Hualiama’s father the king actively discouraged Hualiama’s more masculine pursuits. Each female main character has her own journey to womanhood in unique ways and Hualiama’s is just so amazing. She goes through so much in order to achieve her goals and even though she tries her hardest, sometimes (much like in the real world) things don’t work out. Her life is one of pure happiness and pure tragedy and even though I’m not a very emotional reader I must admit I balled my eyes out at the ending of this book. I defy anyone not to become attached to Hualiama throughout this book. It’s impossible because Marc Secchia not only writes believable and diverse female characters, his writing has such an emotional quality that you won’t be able to remain impassive during their struggles. You’ll really be rooting for Hualiama, trust me. Even when she makes mistakes, you’ll root for her.
The plot starts off pretty fast-paced compared to the other three books in the Island World and although it does slow down in terms of action, it always remains interesting. There’s always that undercurrent of tension as Hualiama is rehabilitated and learns from Flicker and it helps that the point of view changes quite naturally between the two friends. With any other characters I’d say changing points of view with no clear page break would be nothing but trouble but the points of view of Flicker and Hualiama are so different that you’ll never get confused. There’s a tremendous difference between a dragonet and a human being and the difference is even more pronounced when our dragon, Grandion, joins the story. The point of view switches definitely keep things interesting but in reality you could have had the whole book from Hualiama’s point of view and it would still be able to keep readers’ attention. It really is just a fascinating story with so many plot twists your head will spin.
If you haven’t already guessed, I really did love this book. This is definitely one of my top 10 favourites of all time and considering I read on average 200 books per year, that’s really saying something. It’s an incredible book and everyone should buy it. It will make you laugh, cry and just generally have an amazing time. The cliffhanger will also make you as eager as I am for the next book. If my review has intrigued you at all, please go and pre-order Dragonfriend on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It’s only $3.20 and $3.49 respectively and you absolutely won’t regret it.
Dragon Friend by Marc Secchia is, by far, one of the best worlds ever written, ever - in my opinion. He takes an approach to world building that leaves many other fantasy books in the dust. Cloudlands is a place where both dragons and humans inhabit islands surrounded by a sea of poisonous cloud rather than water, and this leads to some pretty amazing modes of transport. Zeppelins and hot air balloons fight and battle it out over these poisonous clouds and if one happens to sink below the cloud then there is not chance they will be coming back. The nature of dragons and dragonets, flying machines and contraptions, thunder storms and crystal clear island lagoon lakes, tropical forests and massive volcanic mountain ranges and island kingdoms battling it out against island kingdoms, it really is an amazing world.
Hualiama’s life as a ward of the King Fra’anior was cushy as best, frustrating at worse but she lacked for nothing. That all gets thrown overboard when the King's man and traitor Ra’aba stabs her and throws her to the clouds in an attempt to silence her in his rise to take the throne. Wounded and slowly dying, Hualiama ends up on the edge of a small volcano with nothing but the clothes on her back. Then a small dragonet nurses her back to health and the two forge an unlikely friendship. Lead by her small dragonet friend Flicker, Hualiama ends up exploring the volcanic island home of the ancient dragon kind where she finds friendship and love in the most amazing places.
Taken in by a monastery full of boys on a neighbouring island, Hualiama's life takes on meaning and purpose as she decides to train with the monks in powerful and lost arts of fighting. She decides she wants to take her revenge on the evil Ra'aba and free her adopted family and King and restore him to the throne.
While training and learning to fight, our heroine witnesses an aerial clash between two incredible dragons and watches a beautiful blue majestic creature fall and crash into the side of the volcano near the monastery, where is it buried alive. What starts as a mission to save the beautiful creature ends up as a quest to save her kingdom.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book and the other Cloudlands series by Marc Secchia. I really can't get enough of his writing. Pure fantasy at its best. Definitely worth the read.
5 stars out of 5 for Dragon Friend, 5 out of 5 for the series.
This was a very creative dragon story!! I really liked the creative plot and the characters were solid. I will definitely check out more of this wrtiers work and more of this series.
Dragonfriend has a lot going for it. A spectacular world, a swashbuckling heroine, an adorable Dragonet, and a charismatic Tourmaline (I love that word) Dragon. If the hallmark of an excellent book is the feeling of having stepped inside it, you have it here.
Huliama, Lia for short, is the adopted daughter of King Chalcion and Queen Shyana of Fra’anior, and, although the King is a very abusive individual and only the Queen and the two young Princes, Ari and Elki, have any regard for her, Huliama is fiercely loyal to 'her' family. She tries to defend them against the traitorous Ra’aba, the Captain of the Royal Guard, who stages a revolt, seizes the throne of Fra’anior and imprisons the royal family, bundling them into a Dragonship to be banished to the farthest corner of the land.
Lia, only fifteen, is no match for the much older, battle-hardened, and merciless Ra’aba, and he cuts her down in a brief sword fight and throws her over the side of the Dragonship. Except for the timely intervention of Flicker, a Dragonet, she would have fallen a long way down to her death. Flicker tends to her wounds on Ha’athior Island, a place forbidden to humans, keeping her hidden from other Dragonets and Dragons, and teaches her Dragonish, and the two of them become fast friends. Later, she saves Grandion, a Tourmaline Dragon,
This is a quest story. Lia must not only rescue her adoptive family, she must also find out who her real parents were and why they abandoned her, and, on the way, in order to be able to confront Ra'aba, she must also hone her fighting skills, which she does, with the advice of the ancient dragon, Amaryllion, and with instruction from a sect of Warrior Monks. Lia, uncertain of herself and a little clumsy in the beginning, grows into a formidable fighter. She is a likable, believable character, as also are the smart-talking Flicker and the fiery-tempered Grandion. The interactions between the intrepid trio are often quite hilarious, and the action sequences they engage in are so well-portrayed, I found myself wincing for Lia; she really endures a lot of physical punishment and bobs up indefatigable still. A very admirable girl.
I loved this book, and, in particular, I should mention, the quite enchanting descriptions of nature and natural phenomenons. If the Dragons wouldn't mind it too much, I should like to set up camp on Ha’athior Island. I'll lay back on the grass, next to one of the water-falls, listen to the blue parakeets squawking overhead, eat purple prekki fruit, and read all the other books by this author.
Highly recommended.

Darn it. I shouldn't have read this. Now I'm going to have to go and buy all the others in this series! Brilliant dragon fantasy, starting with one not-quite a princess, one not-quite a dragon, and ending with an abundance of fully qualified dragons, a mystery of magic to be resolved, and a hopeless love relationship that Marc Secchia had better find a way to resolve, or else! Although one can just about read this book as a stand-alone, I can't imagine a reader who would want to stop here. One of his best.
This was soooo good! It was hilarious, action packed, intriguing, beguiling and all together wonderful. Should they make a live-action series/movie (and actually stick to the story) it would be a most wondrous hit for sure. Lia and her dragon friends race to reclaim the Onyx Throne from Ra’aba and quail the war that is sure start between dragon and humans alike should they fail. I loved this story and am sure it will be a favorite of mine.
**I received a digital copy of this book from YA Bound Book Tours as a part of the Blog Tour in exchange for an honest review.**
One word to describe this book. Wow. This book was simply superb, it completely blew my mind, it was full of action from the very first page and it managed to capture my attention throughout the book. I was in a dilemma whether to sign up for this book tour or not, I’m so glad I did, otherwise I wouldn’t have found out this jewel.
This is the story of straw head, well I mean Hualiama, a dragonet named Flicker and a dragon named Grandion and the amazing bond between them. Hualiama is a royal ward, she was adopted by the queen. But their kingdom is attacked by the traitor Ra’aba and the royal family is imprisoned and she is thrown down from a Dragonship. But Flicker, the dragonet (means he is not a fully grown dragon yet) saves her from the mighty fall and nurtures her back to health. And they develop an amazing friendship between them, he names Hualiama straw head. After seeing a mighty battle between two dragons, one becomes seriously wounded and she gives all her might to save that dragon and finally she is able to, this dragon is known as Grandion and Hualiama becomes her Rider. With the help of these two mighty dragons and a group of monks they plan to overthrow the traitor and restore the real king back to his throne.
The plot was great and very unique. I don’t think I ever read anything like this. It was simply refreshing. It was filled with action from the very first. The friendship between Hualiama or in short Lia and Flicker formed slowly, they taught each other their language and it was actually a great feeling to read about it, their bond was so great. She always wanted to fly, fly with the dragons and she got to fulfill this with Grandion as she became the Dragon Rider. She had to gather allies, train herself and become fully prepared before attacking the palace.
Lia was an astonishing character, she was fiercely brave, loyal and protective. Like everybody she was not deprived of fear. She wanted to save her family at all cost. So as per instructed by an ancient dragon she visits a monastery and becomes an apprentice and learns how to fight. She knows she has to work very hard because nobody has ever been able to touch Ra’aba. Flicker was indeed an adorable character. He stood out for me throughout the entire novel. He was protective and loyal towards Lia. And he loved when he was flattered and showered with attention. Grandion was another mighty character, he was a big dragon after all. His bond with Lia waa something different, something more than simple friendship yet it was so pure. I just loved their bond, it was so amazing.
The plot twist, OH MY GOD, never in a thousand year did I imagine that could happen. I definitely didn’t see that coming, I was completely in denial that it could happen and my mouth was literally hanging open, it took a more than a couple of minutes to proceed what just happened and finally move on to the next part. And the last part, omg, I cried so hard, I didn’t imagine that was going to happen either, I was completely devastated.
The writing was gorgeous. Man, this guy can write. Everything was so vividly described, every single detail was perfectly planned out. One thing I have to say about this book though, is, it can be confusing sometimes. With all the old English language and new made-up words it was a challenging read. I had to re-read a few lines or paragraphs sometimes because of that, it took a some time to get into the flow but once I got in, there was no stopping. This would definitely be epic film. Dragons fighting, swords clashing, yup it would definitely be a mind blowing film.
Overall, this was an awsome book, full of action, adventure, vividly graphic details and great characters. It kept me at the edge and I couldn’t wait to know what happened next. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Recommend it?
I highly recommend this book, it definitely deserves more exposure. All fantasy lovers out there, you can’t miss this book at any cost, grab this one as soon as possible.
Nothing better for a book-lover than to be given a book to read, especially one that is to our liking! I was lucky enough to receive an advanced review copy of M. Secchia's Dragonfriend. I love reading fantasy and am always in awe of authors who go iut of their way to create brave new worlds many of us would like to visit or live in. Knowing full well such magic only exists in books and movies, I readily grabbed the text and dove into reading. From the very first chapter, thrilling and action-packed, you just love the heroine and will probably, just the way I did, devour the following pages, rooting for her and her dragonet friend (no more spoilers ahead, I promise to be very careful about that) throughout all their hardships and friendships. Whether you are a teenage fantasy fan or an adult with an adventurous heart, this intriguing story will lure you in from the start. Spectacular landscapes, amazingly graphic action scenes, gorgeous descriptions with plenty of detail... My absolute favourite scenes are the ones in which the differences in the world, habits, traditions and capabilities of humans and mythical creatures are displayed, with so much humour, insight and emotion, that a proper fantasy fan will relish in every discourse line and every thought shared telepathically between the characters. In this kind of a book, I like to be able to feel the story with all my senses, and the author writes using them - he shares the sounds and silence, the scents and touch, and shows you what he sees, so you can be immersed in reading, just the way a good movie will do, and even better. I mean, if you don't enjoy all that in a fantasy book, then how about majestic creatures described with such detail that you can imagine them in the room next to you, feel their breaths and hear their thoughts in your heads? Life-threatening situations which will have you gripping the covers or your readers till your knuckles are white? And if that doesn't do the trick, a human girl in the midst of the battle of worlds with... oh no, no spoilers! Go ahead, read the book if you dare! And then hope for the sequel soon, with the rest of the fans! Pure fantasy, with all the flavours you need in a great fantasy adventure!
I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. Let me just say, this book has amazing potential. It has a fantastic story line, amazingly well-rounded characters, a beautiful new world, and DRAGONS! I tried so hard to love this book, I truly did, but one thing got in the way, one huge thing. The lack of description. Some flaws in a book can be easily overlooked, easily forgiven. But the amount of description that was left out killed this book for me. I could not follow what was happening most of the time because the author tells the story strictly through dialogue and the main character's current emotions. There are few landscape and surrounding descriptions, bare to none character descriptions, and almost zero imagery. It makes the story telling muddled, and confusing. I think that this story may have even earned a perfect rating if only the description had not been left out, it has that much potential. My hopes are that a publishing company finds the potential in this author's story and, with the help of an editor, turns this book around. Until then, I will be patiently waiting for the next installment, because despite its flaws, I have fallen in love with its world and characters.
This is why I like fantasy so much, that and dragons.
Hualiama is a 15 year old girl who really doesn't know where she came from. She feels that she has been raised by dragons. Lia is a half-daughter of the king who beats her and who she really doesn't like. What worse is Ra'aba who (at the start of the story), slices Lia's back and then throws her off the dragonship. Flicker, a dragonet, catches and saves Lia. They become friends as you can tell from the bantering back and forth between them. Between Flicker and later the Monks, Lia finds her destiny. Enters a tourmaline dragon, Grandion, who teachers her even more.
Lia goes after Ra'aba; he has taken over her father's kingdom and a war between Ra'aba and his dragons and Lia with hers starts and ends with tragedy.
This is a fast pace story, with a strong female protagonist and s smart-mouth dragonet, who leaches the dragon things about humans. You will laugh and cry with Lia, and rally her to win her battle with Ra'aba.
This is one series I will love to continue on with. And I would recommend it to all fantasy readers. I got this book free by the author in exchange for my honest review.
Marc offered me the opportunity to preview and review his latest book, Dragonfriend, and being a big fan of his other works, I grabbed it with both hands.
Marc has created a wondrous world, and with each book he fills in more detail about it and its workings, always leaving me wanting more, always wanting that next insight, that next peek into the mysteries. In this book, he’s fleshed out a story that was hinted at in the Shapeshifter series. And in the process, he’s created an enchanting and engrossing tale. Its a story about tensions and commitment, love and betrayal, terror and beauty. The story is focused on Hualiama, and the dragons and dragonets around her, in a world where this interaction is not always welcome.
A true page-turner, this book is captivating from beginning to end. The world building is nothing short of epic. The characters are endless in their complexity and beauty, and the interactions between them don’t always follow expected lines. If you’re a fan of fantasy and of dragons, this book is an absolute must-read.
Well, i have to say, i bought the book because of the cover. I think i have seen others said it as well. It's superb. I love reading about Dragons and this book is a great dragon book, a great read, a great fantasy. I might have a lot to say, but i will stop here, others have done that so wonderful. Only one thing, if you love reading about dragons, then that book is for you
I was flickering (I'm already on the puns ;D) between 4 stars and 5 stars for this book but I finally settled on the latter since it was my fault I found it confusing at times for picking completely the wrong period of time to read it! It took way longer than I expected to read this book but it was definitely worthwhile. It's not actually that long, however due to the nature of the writing it takes a lot of focus and can't just be lightly read like most YA novels. The book begins with an adopted princess named Hualiama being thrown off a dragonship by Ra'aba, an evil power-seeker who's trying to steal the throne from the rightful king. As you can tell, she didn't die; that wouldn't have been much of a story! She's saved by a feisty dragonet called Flicker. As the story progressed Hualiama and Flicker search to save the Onyx Throne and in the process attempt to figure out Hualiama's past and why she remembers being raised by dragons. First off, I'd like to mention the impressive character and relationship development at the beginning, when Flicker is looking after Hualiama. It was weeks ago when I read the first couple of chapters and I still remember how in awe I was of how they bonded and got to know each other. Honestly, I think that was my favourite section. Flicker is like no other character I've ever seen before and he quickly became my favourite dragon character - and I've read a lot of dragon books! His attitude towards humans, including Hualiama, had me laughing throughout the novel and was the main factor in keeping me interested before the dragon Grandion was introduced. The development of Grandion's character wasn't as great as Flicker's but it was still impressive. In fact, all the character relationships in this book were pretty amazing. One thing I have to say about this book though, is it can be confusing as heck. With all the old English language and new made-up words it was a challenging read. Although I did enjoy the language used, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who'll be preoccupied whilst reading it. So basically, don't read it whilst you're doing exams. Tried and tested. Doesn't work. I had to break off every few chapters to think about what was happening so I'll definitely have to set aside some devoted reading time for the next in the series. Back onto a bright note, this book is one on its own. Normally I'd be saying who I recommend it to here but I honestly have no idea. I've never read anything like it. As I tweeted last week, Dragonfriend is more of an experience than a story. The lyrical writing takes you on an extremely strange journey of thoughts and emotions and you come out from reading this as if you're waking up from a pretty amazing dream. I'm not entirely sure how to explain the feeling of reading Dragonfriend but it's different. I recommend you give it a go because, whether you come out loving or hating it, you won't ever forget reading it.
Yet another Dragon book from Marc that I just adore. And yes I'm giving it 5 stars. Here's my rough rating format: 3 stars if I read (finished it) and liked it. 4 stars if I really liked it, liked the characters, and couldn't wait to read either the rest of the books in the series, or other books by the author. 5 stars to me means all of the above plus I stayed up late to finish it, or snuck reading time while at work (shhh) or put off regular duties and chores to get just one more chapter read.
I'm not a writer (obviously) and am not very eloquent in my writing. So I greatly admire someone who's writing takes me to a different time or place, and draws me in so tightly that when I come up for air I'm a bit dazzled and confused as to where I am and what I'm supposed to be doing next. I held off on reading this book when it was first released (2 months ago?) because I knew I would love this book. I get so wrapped up in the world Marc has created that I cant get enough of it and THANK GOD he's a fast writer because I cant wait for the next books in the series.
I bought this book because of the fabulous cover art (and because I love dragons). The first third of the book was seamlessly perfect and so compelling I couldn't put it down. But then the pacing became uneven as scenes I wanted to "see" were skipped over or told in flashback, which became a little frustrating. The writing overall, however, is superb. The world building is one of the best I've ever read, and the dragons of all sizes are fantastically rendered! I admired the young main character's grit and courage, but her "love interest" was not believable because those crucial scenes were skipped over. There was one disturbing scene of what seemed to be "dragon lust" but other than that the book is a reliable PG-13 for fantasy violence, so suitable for older teens. I am looking forward to reading the rest of Mr. Secchia's books in this fascinating world.
I loved the dragonfriend series. It was simply amazing, how this series gave the dragons more character than "ROAR i will eat you" of just flying around and flaming everything. I like how flicker (My favorite dragonet) gains a possessive attitude over Hualiama as he nurses her and she feeds him entrails and whatnot. Then there is Grandion, the massive blue who also gains a fiercely possessive attitude over Hualiama as they bond without knowingit. Ra’aba is the main villain of this book, as he starts off by stabbing her with a sword and then booting her off a dragonship and into the air, which is where flicker is introduced. Flicker then dies by Ra’aba 's sword, protecting Hualiama, in which (if I remember correctly) she goes into a rage and almosts kills Ra’aba, but then Hualiama is prevented from killing Ra’aba by Sapphurion, which is slightly angering.

'Dragonfriend' by Marc Secchia was a change from my usual bedtime read but we all have to try something different every now and then. At first, I was a bit slow to start this book, but when I did, I was quickly pulled into a story that I couldn't escape from. I highly recommend this book and am amazed with the author's ability to tell and create such a story. You're taken into a whole new world but it's easy to follow and exciting to uncover. The action is unbelievably real and the imagery is just phenomenal. This book is intense, extreme, and gripping from start to end. The characters, especially Hualiama, are so life-like they seem to spring off of the page. Well done Marc and I'm looking forward to no.2 :)
The final cost will be paid by a prevailing bond of companionship. Hualiama’s cherished kingdom of Fra’anior can only be rescued by an amazing friendship that will reinstate the King to the Onyx Throne. Ra’aba is a traitor who has wants to quiet Hualiama forever. Little did he perceive that he would be up against the power of a dragonet’s paw, and the bravery of a girl who would not give in or give up. Each character has an exciting role in this story, even the dragons with their special bond to humans. It is full of virtues, balanced with wickedness, though the virtue prevails in the end. With remarkable scenery, tons of action and much more fantastic mind candy, fantasy fans will have a wonderful time reading this tale.

Honestly, reading fantasy novels began and ended with The Lord of the Rings for me. I know LOTR is a masterpiece, but here came Dragonfriend by Marc Secchia whose writing captivated me from very first chapter. It was not just the story of Hualiama, but the overall development of the characters throughout the book.
Flicker, the dragon has definitely become my favorite.
The old English was a special treat and refreshing at best. It was a wonderful experience and a joyride. For readers looking for a thrilling adventure, you're experience begins right here...
What an epic journey in this wonderfully built fantasy world! I love dragons so I thought I'd pick this up and was throughly surprised and satisfied.
Fantastic world building and kick ass characters, especially the heroine. I totally cried because of Flicker. Tons of actions and history ....oh and the dragon lore is awesome. Something different that I enjoyed. She's a teen in the first book and 22 years old in the second ...but both are YA.
So those that know me know this must be good to keep my attention if it's YA, lol.
It's sadly been a while since I've read a good fantasy novel.
Wow amazing, fabulous and much more I am tingling all over & really do hope to read more I am very happy to say fabulous story. A truly masterful piece of literature . My thanks to the author Marc Secchia your book was truly wonderful and the characters where amazing. This book I would be very happy to give it more than the five stars. This story was a privilege to read and a wonderful pleasure so yes go get this book you will love it a magical roller coaster ride you don't want to miss so to all happy, happy reading from wee me. xxx☺♥
Short version: Great fantasy/YA about a girl saving her family with the help of dragons. The story is filled with action, the world building is engaging, and the protagonist Lia is intriguing and awesome to read about. I really enjoyed this book, it was a total surprise and I can’t wait for the next one. Full review available at my blog The Conversationalist.
An eARC of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Another great dragon book from Author, Marc Secchia. It is so easy to read and the dragons come alive. I can believe he knew a dragon and recounts their history.
This is so much more....more love.....more heart and the truest form of friendship defined. This book has everything, action, adventure, magic, mysticism, life, death. If you like dragons, don't miss Marc Secchia's books. KUDOS on a tale well and truly told.
What a beautifully enchanting tale. It felt like I left my room and traveled to the world of Fra’anior myself. Wonderful descriptions, page-turning action, intelligent and witty banter, funny and emotional moments, romance and grief... this book has it all. I can't wait to get started on the second book of this series. If you want a magical adventure that will make you forget the world for hours at a time, this book is it. I highly recommend it.
The characters were exquisite. I LOVED them! The story was fast paced, suspenseful and full of surprises. I'm always amazed when I read books by Marc Secchia. His female characters seem so realistic - just like me! He's the only male author I've ever read that can write a female character so authentically - it's pretty amazing! His writing is absolutely superb and should be rated at five billion stars. But this particular ending left me drowning in a pool of tears.
