Beware, a fellow adventurer once told Eric Jones. The reaper lurks. But perhaps he truly has nine lives. He was the first British man to solo the Eiger North Face one of the greatest challenges in the climbing world. On the Matterhorn, he was swept within 10 feet of a sheer precipice. As he soared over Mount Everest in a hot air balloon, he had to climb outside the basket to relight the burners. He has climbed dangerous mountains on five continents, parachuted onto the North Pole and BASE jumped from skyscrapers, bridges, masts and mountains. He skydived into the Cave of the Swallows in Mexico, dropping into the 1,400-foot hole in the earth. Astounded people often ask Eric a Why do you do it It is something that cannot be answered simply. For Eric s life on the edge is quite a story. And this is it.
I bought this book in a tourist shop in Wales and really wanted it to be a great read, having enjoyed walking up Snowdon and staying in Snowdonia National Park. Autobiography of welsh solo climber and mountaineer, BASE jumper, motorbike fan. Amazing man, great stories. Told very drily. Would have maybe been better if the book had been written by an associate of Jones’ instead of by him.
Eric Jones has a unique place in outdoor adventure. Respected around the world by those he comes into contact with. I had the honour of being served by him in his cafe at Tremadog (along with thousands of other scruffy climbers). I found the book very interesting but it would have benefited from better proof reading. All in all a good read about an exceptional person.
