Re-read March 2017 An old romantic favorite.

Tina K, you know me so well! I fucking loved this book! It featured a hot Alpha cop, but it really was a love story more than anything. It was incredibly romantic and I loved how sweet and sappy the two MCs were with each other. The secondary characters were a fabulous addition and I'm so excited that at least one of them has their own story out already A Luminous Touch which I haven't had a chance to read yet but just moved WAY up my reading list. I'm going to read the sequel Love in Plain Sight first.

All M/M romance fans will enjoy this book and I can highly recommend it! The sex is off-the-charts and watching these two fall in love was a delight.

Jordan, a tattooed up loner and bad boy cop, was a NYC detective until he gets shot on the job. The perp got the drop on him and Jordan caught a round to the shoulder blade. He finds himself in a lonely hospital bed, reevaluating his life. Jordan up and moves to Washington D.C. where he starts over in the police department there.

Over at his new bear of a partner's house for poker night, Jordan meets Sebastian. Sebastian is a deaf, sunny and beautiful volunteer cop. His coloring is like that of Snow White; pale skin, red lips and black hair with blue eyes. Jordan is automatically attracted and so the romance begins.

Okay, so I'm not exactly sure what to say about this story. It was so...random and very, very blah.

Oh, and then there is the fact that almost everyone turns out to randomly be gay. And there are no women. Oh wait, sorry, there's Sebastian's mother. She's an evil, cold, nasty woman who just throws her children away. Also, Jordan's mother is mentioned. She has pretty much abandoned Jordan and his brother Jack. She's now a drifter who's distant and cold and has screwed up her life. I am tired of reading these stories where the women are all negative characters.

Nothing really happens in this story, so I don't have much to say. I wasn't invested in the characters or in their relationship. I was annoyed with the way the story seemed so disjointed. I skimmed over the sex scenes. I even skimmed over the scene of the main characters' first kiss.

I was looking forward to this story and in the end I was so, so disappointed. I try to take chances on new authors but it just didn't work out for me with this book.

Ok, first I have to say I don't know why, but I imagined a whole diffferent kind of book than this turned out to be.
It was a nice story, sweet and some funny moments, mostly from Bro, Sebastian's brother!
There are no big misunderstandings or external meddling to distract form Jordan and Sebastian's developing relationship, which is slow to start, and they don't jump into bed right away, which was good!
But, my biggest niggles were Jordan, who in the first few pages makes a point to describe himself as 'mellow'', but oh boy, this guy thinks WAY TOO MUCH! He is in no way 'mellow', his brain is on speed, he thinks about his relationship with Sebastian , why he needs it, but shouldn't have, he's not good enough, he needs him, this is the moment they first touch, .......that was a big deterrent in my enjoyment of this story, had 1/2 of his inner musings been cut, it still would have been more than enough, IMO, and just two more small point, he also makes a statement at the beginning that he doesn't( or very rarely) drinks and even explains why, but got drunk and was hungover numerous times in the book, and there are only 2 women in this book ( one is only mentioned ) and both are bitches!
Now, Bro was funny and totally irreverent, and I would have loved to hear more of what Sebastian was thinking!
All in all a sweet story and enjoyed Sebastian and Jordan's relationship and development! ( when Jordy wasn't thinking it to death! )

~BECAUSE SOMETIMES CHARACTERS ANNOY ME!!~
2.5

I was so very disappointed in Sounds of Love I feel like crying. I wanted to like it so much, based on the blurb and that very pretty cover but in the end, it just did not work for me. Mostly it all comes down to one of the MC’s annoying the crap out of me. So whenever he opened his mouth, or rambled on internally I pitched a fit.

Jordan Waters is a cop and he has just moved to a new city after suffering a gunshot wound. He has new partner in the fraud division and he’s all-good at his job. When his partner invites him over for a Friday night poker game, he meets Sebastian a beautiful man that shakes his foundation and having wanting things he’s even scared to dream of.

A night of flirting with Sebastian leads Jordan to the realization that landing his prey comes with a cost, and he will never settle for just being a one-night fuck. Sebastian’s handicap of being unable to hear doesn’t hold him back in any form and Jordan is attracted to his strength while facing adversity. The two begin a tentative relationship and slowly make their way into building a family.

I believe 2 years ago I would have loved the crap out of this book. There’s the angst, the beautiful sexy characters, and the drama. The writing is very good if very descriptive and repetitive at most, I still liked it. The thing character who ruined my whole reading experience was Jordy. He was extra, over dramatic, and a preacher. His title says cop but I don’t know… dude can go on and on and on.

“This very well-maintained SUV of mine became a fountain of dreams and aspirations and wants and desires because it was the first place where he had touched me.”

=_= the note I wrote in the Kindle “Are u fucking kidding me right now. It’s just a freaking car”. Seriously Jordan aspirations, dreams?

“Hey grumpy old man, I’ll be sixteen in three months. Then I’ll kick your ass.”
I laughed wholeheartedly. “Yeh, I’d love to see that.” So I had a black belt in judo. So I knew teakwondo, and jujutsu, and Krav Maga. I wasn’t about to let Bro know that. His uninformed challenge at me would just make his epiphany that much sweeter.

Seriously, Jordan it’s a figure of speech your Krav Maga and other lethal skills isn’t needed here. I am surprised he didn’t answer back in one of the seven languages he knows.

There were moments that I really enjoyed the book, but then you know who would get into one of his rants which tells how awesome he is, then how broken he is, and then how awesomely broken he is. I did like the slow burn that Jordan and Sebastian relationship offered. They didn’t just jump in to bed together, and some of their scenes together were cute.

I liked Bro, Sebastian’s little brother he was very cute (though I have no clue why Bro likes Jordan so much. He said a lot of douchy things to him). Liked some of the supporting characters. Not really on board with the second hook-up in the book, seems pointless and too much.

Overall, I really wanted to like this book more but in the end eye roll numerous was out in full force. I really cannot stand Jordan and feel Sebastian deserves someone better. It won’t be my last time reading Susan Laine because I did enjoy some of the writing, and can’t completely rule the author out. Just couldn’t make a connection with this one.

This book was recommended to me by Gigi. Thank you for this!

I loved it. I have no idea if this book is very authentic with the way it deals with Sebastian’s deafness. At times I wondered if it wasn’t all a bit too easy. It didn’t feel like a hindrance for the MC’s at all. And perhaps this is true, I wouldn’t know. I still enjoyed the heck out of this one.

This is a book about Jordan, a cocky police officer. He has set his eyes on police volunteer Sebastian. Once these two meet for the first time, Jordan pursues Sebastian relentlessly. The fact that Sebastian is deaf is no problem for Jordan at all. He just knows he must have him.

I kept admiring Sebastian with my gaze. The young man fidgeted in his seat, all too aware of my stare. He licked his lips, and I was hungry. I couldn’t remember when I’d last wanted a guy this bad.

Jordan was a funny guy, I liked him. In the past he was never one for a serious relationship, or any relationship. But after meeting Sebastian this changes. I loved the fact that these two had an immediate connection. There was never any doubt in Jordan’s mind that Sebastian was special to him and that he just wanted to be with him.

Sebastian was an incredibly sweet guy. He was adorable. I was intrigued with the way he handled his deafness from the start. It never seemed like an issue to him. He was only bothered by it because he could not become a real cop, but had to settle for being a paid volunteer.

No significant angst in this one. All was sweet and loving, but never boring.

And even though this story takes place over a span of several weeks, it didn’t feel like insta-love.

The writing was pretty good. I did feel like the author was trying a bit too hard at times. A bit too much descriptions or a bit too much attempt at humor. But overall, I enjoyed it a great deal.

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. When it first came out, the cover kept catching my attention but I never picked it up. When I started reading, however, I was so enamored with the writing, Jordan's voice and the fact one character has a disability that I was immediately drawn into the story and didn't want to put it down.

What one needs to know, however, is that this is a slow-burn book. There are sporadic scenes of suspense but otherwise it is filled with sexual tension, flirting and teasing between Jordan and Sebastian. There isn't much else to it. It is about Jordan overcoming being emotionally stunted and finally taking that leap into a relationship as well as Sebastian learning even though he's disabled (he's deaf) he's still strong and can be physically and emotionally independent.

There are no doubt problems with this story but I was so captivated by these boys I didn't even notice any. The relationship Jordan and Sebastian create is based on more than just sex. It's based on actual attraction, likes and dislikes, knowing the family, but understanding each other down to their cores. Then there's a little side plot about Jordan's brother, Jack, and Jordan's partner, Kevin, that was very touching and cute.

Overall, this was exactly the type of book I, unknowingly, was looking for and it was amazing. I know for a fact I'll be rereading this. So, if you're looking for a sweet, realistic tale between a deaf man and an emotionally stunted guy then this is the book for you. It's quirky, cute and funny, filled with tension.

Sounds of Love is the first book I’ve read by Susan Laine and it definitely won’t be my last! I loved the fast-paced storyline and the strong emotional bond between the two main heroes. When I started this book last night, I had intentions of reading a few chapters and finishing it the next morning. Wrong! Once I started Sounds of Love I was immediately drawn into the lives of these very interesting and likeable characters, and I wasn’t able to put the book down until I finished the last word.

When police officer, Jordan Waters, was injured during the line of duty, he knew he wanted a fresh start. He moved to a new city, has a new partner and is determined to make a new life for himself. One night, Jordan’s partner invites him to play some poker with some friends. Thinking it would be a night just like any other, he’s stunned when he meets, Sebastian Sumner, a police volunteer who at first glance, immediately takes Jordan’s breath away. In the past, Jordan has had the love ‘em and leave ‘em attitude when it comes to hooking up with men, so he feels off balance, and off of his game when he meets the gorgeous and very intriguing Sebastian. Even when he realizes that Sebastian is deaf, but he can read lips and speak quite clearly, Jordan becomes even more mystified and captivated by the slightly younger man. Jordan tries to steady his emotions and attraction for Sebastian by deliberately becoming flirtatious with him, and the two men start a cat and mouse banter between them. But, there is something about Sebastian that steadily chips away at the wall that Jordan has around his heart, and Jordan begins to stop being the slick one-liner player he’s used to being, to the vulnerable and lonely man he really is. Once he shows this side to the sweet but cautious Sebastian, the men start forming a deep emotional bond between them that Jordan never thought he’d have with another. Will Jordan be able to work through his fears and finally have a chance to achieve a happy life with Sebastian?

I really loved this book! Jordan is such a complex and interesting character, I couldn’t keep from becoming captivated with his story and with his lover, Sebastian. I admit I wasn’t sure if I was going to like him at first. He’s arrogant and sexy and has kept everyone he knew at arm’s length most of the time. But, as the story progressed, and I got to know his vulnerable and caring side, I really began to like him. I loved how enthralled Jordan became with Sebastian and how Sebastian made him leave his comfort zone of pushing people away, to wanting to be part of a family with Sebastian. His character really evolves throughout the book, but he still keeps some of that naughty arrogance that I came to love. I absolutely adored Sebastian too! His determination to survive in a hearing world and his inner sweetness captivated me as much as it did Jordan! I understood why Jordan fell so hard for him and I also loved the relationship he had with his younger brother.

All of the characters in this book are well written and likeable people. I hope that Ms. Laine takes pity on his reader and writes a sequel featuring more of these characters because I’m definitely pining on reading more about them. Sounds of Love has a firm place on my keeper shelf, and I know any time I’m hankering for a sweet, sexy and emotionally charged read, I’ll reach for it time and time again.

Characters with enough experience to know who they are and what they want. An MM romance that is erotic, heartwarming and funny. I loved it!

Jordan is a detective who knows what he wants. He is loud and out, unapologetic about his sexual prowess and is used to getting any man he wants. When he meets the angelic-looking Sebastian at poker night, his interest is triggered. I loved Jordan's aggressive pursuit of Sebastian - a beautiful disabled volunteer police officer. Sebastian is mischievous, sweet and a total match for Jordan.

This is the story of a "player" (Jordan) who finally realizes that there is more to life than one-night stands. This also has one of the better sibling coming-out storyline I have read to date. Jordan's reaction to Kevin (his partner) and Jack (his brother) revelations and attraction was totally believable…if a bit over dramatic.

I did feel the dialogue was a little weak at times, but the characters were distinct and relatable.

I really don't know what I expected from this story. I liked Jordan for the most part, however, really got tired of the inner dialogue, there was just too much that it became annoying and I started skimming some of it. I think if the author had also given us the same from Sebastian it would have balanced it out much better. While this was an insta-love, I did enjoy how the author put them together and didn't have them jumping into bed within the first couple of pages. There was no conflict, no angst, just two people who meet and have a mutual attraction.

Going by the blurb this seems to be a story about grown men. Looking then at the cover I'm confused. I mean, really pretty people on the cover but at least in my imagination that I got from reading the blurb they so do not fit. Just my 2 cents.

This is one of those books that I really had mixed reactions about which totally surprised me as I had seen quite high ratings and reviews from my GR friends plus found the blurb really appealing.

I actually struggled to engage with the story for about the first 50%. So what didn't I enjoy? I'm not sure if I totally liked the first person POV. I think I actually got a little sick of Jordan's voice. Jordan seemed all over the place, flitting from thought to thought. He could be in the middle of a drama and suddenly starting thinking about something totally unrelated and things seemed to drag out with long internal monologue.

But after the first 50%, things started to pick up and also more characters started to play an active role in the story. The plot centres around Jordan, a policeman and self-confessed "A guy gifted in sexual pleasures but talentless in love." who falls for Sebastian, a deaf volunteer police worker. Sebastian manages to break through to Jordan and even from the first meeting, it is clear that Jordan has feelings for him. He cares enough to warn Sebastian about his past and suggest he gets the low down from his partner before they take their relationship any further.

Sebastian was a fabulous character (strong, capable and honest) and his deafness was NOT his defining quality. This was not a story about how Jordan forms a relationship with a deaf man, rather a story about how Jordan forms a relationship with any man.

I found some of the dialogue to be a bit flowery, some scenes a bit disjointed, some events or reactions that seemed strange or unrealistic and there was definitely something weird going on with gay men coming out of the closet left, right and centre! . I would also like to let Jordan know that talking about someone's brothers' living arrangement isn't the best way to stall to make sex last! Distracting? Yes. But in a good way? No.

It may sound like I didn't like this story much but I actually did find the second half enjoyable. The story is redeemed by men who aren't afraid to show love and emotion, cute kid brothers (Bro is great!) and happy endings!

Sometimes with policemen as MCs, we get a lot of plot and some romance thrown in between. Here, our two heroes could've been florists and it wouldn't have made a difference, because this book concentrated mainly on their relationship (yeah, I guess the whole message about family got through better with all of them being tough men from the force) I really didn't mind though. I loved the pace and intensity of them getting together plus Sebastian's handicap made it all even more interesting. All the supporting characters were great, I absolutely loved Bro. One thing that surprised me was the sudden moment when everyone around them just went gay...In real life, that is a perfect scenario for me...all men going gay and being all kissy and cute :D:D:D how awesome would that be??? So yeah, all in all it was very enjoyable read for me...I would not recommend it to people who are looking for an action filled story coming from the fact that they are cops.

This is one of those books that I have put of reading for whatever reading. I think the cover threw me, as both the guys there look very young. But in the book they aren't that young. Our tattooed MC is actually in his early thirties... so I shouldn't have paid attention to the cover!

I'm glad I finally got around to reading it though. It's a sweet and romantic tale, with characters that aren't perfect. And while there are some bits that did niggle a little...the time frames seem a bit inconsistent and certain issues don't so much get resolved, rather they seem to dissolve...

But overall, sweet, romantic, sexy... just what I wanted!

Nice and sweet story with very little angst, just as I love it ))
I'm a Jordan girl all the way, but I like Sebastian a great deal. Their relationship development was so touching <3

I may be in the minority, but I didn't really care for Jack and Bro. Bro's fun in small doses, but I'm not all that interesten in teenager/very young adult characters. And Jack's not my type of character at all, plus I didn't like how it was stressed he's so much hotter/taller/better than Jordan. I liked Kevin a lot, though, but after reading my friend's review of Kevin/Jack book I won't be reading it, coz it's not my kind of relationship. Wish some better fate for Kevin :/

Very cute, sexy read. Deaf police volunteer who is super hot and a cop who needs to learn how to love. Couldn't put it down! Just what I wanted! One niggling point- short fragmented sentences really annoyed me. I think they were to show some fragmented thoughts, but it was a little to get over in the beginning. It definitely was a non issue as I got into the story.

I enjoyed this story overall, but certain parts just bothered me. Inconsistencies. One scene had one MC in suit pants, then all of a sudden he was in jeans, then he was in suit pants again. Pants were off, then magically on again to be taken off a second time. 😕 Also, I didn’t feel that it was a realistic portrayal of a deaf person. Just too many niggles for me to round up to 4 stars.

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

Reviewed by Stacey Jo: What a great story! It was nearly impossible to put it down. The characters in the story were all very lovable and engaging, and the story was well developed and well written.

Jordan Waters is a police officer who has transferred into the D.C. police department from out of state after recovering from being shot. He's left his family behind though and he's lonely. But his reputation as a player precedes him.

Sebastian Sumner is a police volunteer working at the station who is deaf. Despite, or more like because of his deafness, he is extremely courageous and has wicked sense of humor.

Jordan and Sebastian first meet at a poker game and they are instantly attracted, or at least Jordan thinks they are, but instead of charging ahead and conquering Sebastian like he would any other guy, Jordan senses that there is something different about Sebastian. They have their first opportunity to get to know each other on a long car ride home and it's at that point that Jordan knows he's crazy about Sebastian, but Sebastian has him totally off his game.

They take their time in getting to know each other. At least there is no instantly hopping into the bed. And it's a really nice, steady, hot, slow build. They both have the art of the tease down really well and it's good fun to watch them both in action. And once they do get together... Wow! You'll be fanning yourself! They are smoking hot together. They don't just get right to it either. They know how to enjoy each other's bodies and work up to the good stuff. If you enjoy good foreplay and smoldering love scenes, then you've found your book.

The dialogue is sharp and well paced. Sebastian is quick witted and humorous. Jordan does a lot of introspection but what I found interesting is that he analysed himself a lot which most people either can't or aren't willing to do. He seems to know what his demons are and understand then. It doesn't mean he handles them well but Sebastian, being deaf most of his life is capable of reading people very well and he knows exactly how to handles Jordan when he isn't saying what the problem is.

Being that these are cops we do get some excitement with a shooting scene which lends a little bit of predictability to the book. The other characters have some minor issues that add some interest to the story as well.

Speaking of the other characters, Bro and Jack, Sebastian and Jordan's little brothers, respectively, made wonderful supporting characters and nearly stole the show themselves. I actually looked up Ms. Laine's website to see if there was another book that followed this one in hopes that there as another book that would involve one of these characters. The story is certainly written so that a sequel could be possible with a number of the secondary characters. Several of Jordan's police buddies turn out to be gay but that's nothing unusual seeing as how gay officers would naturally gravitate to each other and hang out together.

I really hope Ms. Laine writes a sequel to this because I'll definitely be there to read it.

A+

I loved the idea of this story when I read the blurb and I had already enjoyed a different book by the author. There is just something heroic about a person with disabilities making their way independently in the world and doing it in such a way that he is also a wonderful romance hero to a man that as a cop he is generally thought of the one as rescuer and not rescuee.

Jordan Waters has recently moved to DC and transferred from robbery/homicide to fraud division after a near fatal shooting. He is prickly and cynical trying to keep everything and everyone at a distance with the exception of his partner at work who he is only slightly more accepting of. Kevin Thompson his partner is a big bear of a man who takes Jordan's issues in stride. He isn't intimidated by the muscles, the piercings, the tats, the scowls or the biting wit.

It is at Kevin's house that he is brought up short when Jordan catches sight of Sebastian Sumners for the first time. Jordan sets out to seduce the beautiful deaf man from the moment he sets eyes on him, but it is not long before he learns that Sebastian will never be just one more notch in his gun belt. Sebastian has the uncanny ability- hearing impaired and all- to see right through him and touch his soul. Letting Sebastian get close and see all the ugliness inside terrifies Jordan, but he can't stay away even as he warns Sebastian off.

Sebastian keeps their relationship at a slower pace knowing that Jordan needs to work through his issues, but it is Sebastians's issues that bring out the best in Jordan. Jordan is the first one to really 'see' Sebastian. He sees a man he is attracted to and a friend and he actually forgets about the deafness sometimes. Sebastian is a talented lip reader and works in the archives of the police department, but he is constantly treated like he's something fragile or less than whole. Even his parents did it too him before his dad got too sick and his mother grew ashamed and cold toward him.

As they just start to reach out in an actual relationship, Sebastian learns from his younger brother that his dad is not just sick, but dying. His family never thought to tell him and they pushed his younger brother, Ambrosius (I know, what a name to saddle a kid with) out of the house to go visit Sebastian. Jordan finds himself needed and wanted for emotional support for the first time in his life.

The story moves on from there with events and people taking Jordan on this relationship of discovery that he will either learn to take courage in hand and accept the what he has or he will lose something precious.

The plot was one of those slower moving character-driven ones that I enjoy both because I like getting to know a character and watching them grow, but also because I like to see a relationship develop based on more than just initial physical attraction. Both the main characters and the secondary ones surrounding them are written so well that even in a plot with less action it was not boring.

So once again, I enjoyed a Susan Laine story. I look forward to the sequel to this story and other books by the author.

An interesting story but my enjoyment was marred by tropes that do not appeal.

For the most part, I enjoyed it. If I don't look too deep, it's a nice way to pass a few hours.

Jordan is a guy whose emotions are kept under tight control. Or so we are told. I don't see many instances of it as his control flew out the window ever since he met Sebastian. The only time I could see something along the lines of that was that thing with his brother, Jack.

I like Sebastian. He has a strong spirit and doesn't let Jordan call all the shots. He and Jordan are quite cute together and I liked how proactive he was in going after Jordan.

The introduction of both brothers was fun and amusing to watch. I like it when families good-naturedly interfere in a couple's relationship.

The development of Jordan and Sebastian's relationship was smooth and there was not much tension. This could be considered good since certain aspects of the story appear contrived.

It was near the end that I started to be seriously irritated by the direction of the story.

I don't get why some people claim this is a slow-burn romance. It's pretty much insta-love to me.

I didn't mind that but I felt the story moved a bit too fast. The progress of the book felt jerky and as a result, seemed a more clinical read than a sweet, emotional one that the author was clearly intending. I see the bits which were supposed to tug my heartstrings but I felt...nothing.

From what I have written, it would seem my rating for it would be lower but overall, it was an entertaining story.
