An interesting start to the story, I had my doubts with the introduction of a Ouija board, but overall it was a decent little story. I might have enjoyed it a bit more if I had read it straight after book 2, instead of nearly a year's gap.
So decided to read this here short story that fits between books 2 and 3 in the Shepherd series when book three appeared like magic.
Dakota never learned to drive so one of her girlfriends (she has several, okay two), decides to teach her. So they are bouncing around an abandoned parking lot one night when they run over a man. With Dakota behind the wheel. They frantically look at what they've done but . . . no body. They look everywhere. Then, a man appears standing near them. The same man they drove over. He smiles at Dakota. Looks over at Raelya (the name of the girlfriend, I should use names). Man becomes instantly enraged when he sees Raelya and attacks her. Flings her around.
Dakota tries to help but she can't seem able to reach him. For he is incorporeal. He flings Raelya around some more, eventually positioning her directly in front of the truck they were driving - her head aligned with one of the tires, then takes over control of the truck. Raelya's head is about to be squashed. Dakota reacts, gets injured. Ghost poofs. Oops, sorry, was being vague and I let things out early. Yeah, man be ghost.
For 'reasons' they investigate the haunting. Have another enounter with ghost man. They learn of a betrayal. They deal with it. Story over.
Interesting enough story, I guess. Not really enough here to keep my attention. Maybe if I’d read it immediately after book 2 I’d have enjoyed it more. Possibly.
It was there. I read it. Yay me.

Lovely little novella that, while it probably won't have a huge impact on the overall story, nevertheless told a complete tale and added some more character details and interactions that helped to flesh out the world a bit more. Occasionally, novellas can feel sparse or rushed, but not so here. While it wasn't terribly long, it felt precisely as long as it needed to be. It was a fun read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the previous two novels.
Book 2.5 as a novella of Shei Darksbane "Auralight Codex: Dakota Shepherd" series. Please read "Awakened" and "Hunted" first.
Whilst Raelya is teaching Dakota to drive in an empty parking lot they stumble upon a decades old secret that threatens to break the bonds of the pack. A horrible crime that has gone unpunished for too long. It is up to Dakota to work out the mystery and seek justice for the crime that impacts the whole pack.
Shei Darksbane has done a great job with this novel. Being the second of the series the reader can really see how the author has matured since writing "Awakened".
Ms Darksbane has recapped in this novel enough that if you pick the second book up a couple of months after reading the first that you will remember what is happening in the story. I like the characters that Shei has built up for us, as a reader I felt that I was really starting to connect with them and that I was transported into the pages to become a part of the story. It is always an indication of a good author when you loose yourself in the story and you no longer feel like you are reading a book but rather you are living and breathing a book, Ms Darksbane has achieved this in "Driven". I didn't want to put it down as I wanted to know where the story would go next. So once again, well done Ms Darksbane, a very well written novel worth the 5 stars. I look forward to seeing where this story goes next.
This is the first of what I understand to be several Dakota short stories and to be honest, I'm excited for the rest if they're all as good as this one!
This is an excellent story about ... well, I'm afraid to say too much for fear of spoilers. But it was an amazing peek both into the history of Dakota's world, and into the way the world works.
It was a fun little extra read. added a different light to an established world. Not much to say about a little short except it was funny and added a nice tie in to the rest of the series. *Edit: Ok I've had some time to think so I'm going to flesh this out as I think you deserve more of a review. I liked getting more backstory, and I liked getting to know and this one was a nice way to develop Dakota and give her relationships another perspective too.
