“The man rotated a huge hand, and the blade glinted in the moonlight. ‘If I catch you out here again at night, I’ll kill you. See? I’ll slit your belly and feed your guts to the fish.’ The gleaming blade flicked toward the river.”

Deep in the woods a ruined house conceals two high tech criminals. When Tyler stumbles on their secret, life is about to get complicated. The criminals target Tyler’s new friend, now he must choose between loyalty and fear, hope and despair, and doing the right thing or doing nothing at all.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of middle grade boy Christian fiction out there, and this book will definitely appeal to those readers! (Though there's no reason a girl wouldn't enjoy it, for I did. :)

Dealing with a new town, a new school complete with bullies, struggling to make friends, family squabbles, and dealing with past mistakes, Tyler unfortunately stumbles upon two ex-convicts who threaten his family's life if he alerts anyone to their suspicious behavior--and these two aren't cardboard villains a reader would write off just because it's a kid's book! How does a preteen handle that kind of pressure? Run!

Though Tyler sometimes can come off as not the most likable in the beginning, he's real and grows throughout the story into a boy who's worth looking up to. There is a nice moral growth to the character as he deals with his thoughts on God and church as well and how he should treat family and friends.

And this book is not dumbed down, the author definitely doesn't talk down to his readers. My mother in law read this book as an earlier version I got from the author while babysitting my kids and she asked me when the next one would be out so she could read it. She's in her 70s, so there's proof that you don't have to be the age group audience to enjoy the story. :)

There's an excellent set of discussion questions in the back if your boys group would like to do a boy's book club.

The only caveat I have is violence, my 9 year old girl does not like scary so this would not be appropriate for those who do not do scary or villains. There are threats to people's lives, weapons brandished by the bad guys, attempts to capture the young characters, and allusions to murder, but everything is tastefully done and if your child is willing to watch Disney villains (unlike mine! I so thought I'd be watching Disney movies with my kids, but noooo. Anyway....) If kid movie villains are all right for your kid, then there's nothing here to worry about. Clean.

Disclosure: I do work with Glenn in a writing capacity, but the opinions of the book are my own. I can attest to his excellent writing skills since he sharpens mine. :) There's no reason to give kids poor quality literature!

Glenn Haggerty’s contemporary mid-grade novel, RUN, is a skillfully written page-turner with realistic family and personal situations, excitement, suspense, and twisty surprises. Well-drawn characters and good descriptions, immediately pull the reader into the story. The main character, Tyler Higgins, isn’t thrilled over being a transplant from Florida, especially having to adjust to being the new kid in town. It would be easier to bury himself in his video games than to cope. But, Ty, even making mistakes as he deals with bullying, siblings, and progressively real and dangerous threats from the shadows, is much stronger than he gives himself credit for. Through the events he experiences, the reader sees positive changes that give him the strength and presence of mind he needs in the difficulties he faces . . . even when he has to run!

If this mom and grandmother had a hard time getting her work done while immersed in Glenn’s debut novel, it will surely keep the boys and young men in your life on the edge of their seats.

A Kindle version of RUN was provided for me to read. I recommend this book and have given a sincere and honest review. The five stars Glenn’s earned from me are well deserved.

If the first book is any indication, intense is a good word for the series. I'm not a middle grade boy, but I definitely see how the novel could appeal to them. Tyler deals with a lot of normal issues that every tween struggles with, friends, popularity, annoying siblings, the desire to fit in. You name it, and Tyler has it--along with dangerous knowledge of a secret buried deep in the woods.

I read the first couple chapters to my 8 year old--who's a little younger than the recommended age--and he kept begging me to read more and more, wanting to know what happened to Tyler. And as a mom, I loved how God and a spiritual thread were woven into the novel. I can give my son a riveting, adventurous story and know that he's still learning biblical principles. What more can I ask for in a middle grade novel?

Run is a fast-paced adventure that will especially appeal to pre-teen and teen boys. What I loved about the protagonist, Tyler Higgins, is that despite the extraordinary perils that keep him on the run, his problems and flaws are so normal. He's got troubles ranging from being the new kid navigating a new town and school, to a variety of bullies, to his brother's stubbornness.

Even the Christian thread running through the book is exactly the ordinary kind of (still important) challenges to faith that you might expect. As a parent, I appreciate that Tyler's parents are portrayed as caring, involved, and responsible yet burdened by real-life challenges.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series and sharing these with my teenage son.

Glenn Haggerty’s debut, RUN, is one of the best MG books I’ve read. A solid intertwining of suspense and character development make this story an exciting, fun read.

Tyler Higgins is new to Lehigh and desperate to make friends. But the right friends, as in popular. Unfortunately, he becomes the butt of some older boys fun, and he becomes the mean kid toward a neighbor offering friendship. While Tyler’s figuring out his new social life, he discovers suspicious plumbers driving the streets at night. He’s certain they’re up to something more than answering after-hours emergencies. But Tyler can’t find answers alone. He’ll need friends. And first, Tyler has to learn how to be a friend.

I loved this story for so many reasons. I’ve moved a lot, and Tyler’s feelings of being the new kid and wanting to make the “right” friends was absolutely authentic. But his mistakes never outweighed the goodness lying inside him.

I’m also an avid fan of mysteries. In junior high, I read all the original Hardy Boys (they were already old by then!) as well as other classic mystery series. Run delivers that same mystery and suspense, but even better, with a deeper connection to the main characters than those classics provide. The author masterfully balances Tyler’s character arc with the suspense so there’s never a slow or boring moment. By the end, the reader will be both satisfied and eager for book 2!

At 13, Tyler has moved from Florida to a small northern town. In trying to fit in with the "cool" kids in his new neighborhood and school, Tyler's adventure into the woods causes him to stumble across serious danger. Suddenly, he's thrust into not only trying to deal with school bullies, a pesky little brother, being the new kid in school, and basically just being thirteen, Tyler and his family are in very real danger from a couple of thieves trying to keep Tyler quiet.

Run is a great read full of action and situations most middle schoolers can identify with. While most middle schoolers don't find themselves threatened by criminals, they do deal with the same issues as Tyler does regarding bullies, new friends, younger siblings, and questions of faith.

Although it is geared more toward appealing to 10-14-year-old boys, my 10-15-year-old girls were instantly taken in by the story and are asking for more adventures from Tyler. Run is also a good read for adults to get a glimpse into the mind of a 13-year-old and recall just what a tough age that is, which can help those of us raising tweens and teens connect with our own kids. Adults will also appreciate how Tyler's character grows throughout the story.

Excellent book for tweens boys (and girls) on the consequences of trying too hard to fit in. Tyler finds it difficult to make friends, not realizing his efforts to be liked and accepted by more popular kids are sabotaging his relationships with his real friends. He’s not a very likeable character to start with, as he blames others for his troubles and tries to wiggle out of mishaps that are the result of his own choices. But throughout the book, we see him grow and change and take responsibility, even risking his life for people he cares about. And in the end, we love Tyler and cheer him on against the bad guys.
I found it hard to put the book down, and especially enjoyed the title’s play on a character name as well as the action Tyler seems to do most. With themes of friendship, honesty, personal responsibility and integrity, this is a well-written debut novel by Glenn Haggard and I look forward to reading more from him.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly recommend this book as a good, clean read with both adventure and a take-away lesson for young readers.

Glenn Haggarty’s debut teen novel RUN kept me in suspense from start to finish with the hero in constant danger from criminals, pressure from peers to prove himself worthy of their friendship as the new kid in town, and sibling conflict. Tyler’s a likable teen whose need to fit in with his classmates comes with a price. He grows from a self-absorbed young man to someone who risks his life for others. The author’s fast-paced storytelling coupled with a talent for skillfully drawing you deeply into each character’s emotions make this a memorable read. I'd recommend RUN to teens and adults looking to grow in their confidence to handle change, social conflict, and standing up for biblical principles when there is a price to pay. RUN contains some violence.

A new home, city, state, and school. Tyler was in a funk. He wanted to make friends with other kids his age in the area. They , however, were not that thrilled with the "new kid". Moving was bad enough but starting a new middle school was horrible. To add to his problems he knows where a deserted house is and someone is living there.

Mr. Haggerty has done an excellent job of depicting the problems that thirteen year old boys have. The doubts and fears that go with the changes when moving to new places. The fear that his family was in danger and guilt that he could have done things differently.

This is a very good story for the younger teens. The print is larger and easy to read. Easy prose for the age group to understand.

Discover the 'HIGGINS BOY's', and another classic will be born !
"Exciting, fast paced, outstanding character development with a clear Christian based foundation. Sure to bring a positive message to young and old alike... just good, clean fun! Especially entertaining are the character descriptions...'Dylan flicked hair from his eyes and squinted', and a constant source of amusement throughout the story line. RUN is reminiscent of my youth when I was riveted to the 'HARDY BOY's' adventures. With God's blessing, youth throughout the world will discover the 'HIGGINS BOY's, and another classic will be born. Looking forward to the next installment of the adventures of Tyler and 'Little Bro' Dylan, the 'HIGGINS BOY's'."

The target audience of the book is young teenagers but I am a kid at heart and enjoyed the book. I will encourage my grandkids to read it because there are valuable lessons to be learned from it. I hope they never face the kinds of life-threatening things that Tyler faced. However, I can say with certainty that all kids face things on a regular basis that threaten them spiritually and would lead them astray if not properly grounded. I recommend parents of children and teenagers read this as well. The story is well-written with a lot of suspense and action to hold the interest while benefiting from the truths woven into the story. I won a copy of this book in a giveaway by another author and was encouraged to post a review.

A well-written debut packed with action and suspense, RUN has a lot to offer middle-schoolers, young teens, and adults alike. The main character, Tyler, suspects evil in his midst and must discern it from ordinary and temporary threats and challenges. The story kept me guessing as to the true intentions of each character Tyler encounters. In Tyler, I found the kind of boy I’d want my own son or daughter to have as a friend: sometimes victim, sometimes spectator, sometimes hero, but always real. RUN contains some violence.

Although it's been several years since I've read Young Adult fiction, Run quickly drew me in. I made the mistake of reading the climax right before bed. It was impossible to put down, and my heartbeat kept me up even after finishing the book. On top of the excitement, there were also good life lessons that played out in a realistic way. The characters grew not through lectures, but by making mistakes, apologizing, and making efforts to change. I look forward to seeing the characters develop in future installments!

I thoroughly enjoyed the psychological depth to this novel geared toward middle school boys. Glenn Haggerty encompasses the intensity of middle school emotions such as rejection, the desire to fit in, anger, and bullying in an adventure-packed way that thoroughly impressed me as a licensed mental health counselor. I'd recommend this book to middle-schoolers or teens that like a fast-paced thriller as well as those who might themselves be dealing with some conflicts with friends, bullying, or the struggle to forgive.

A thrilling book any teen or adult will enjoy!

This book is so exciting! A great read with character development. Tyler is a teen boy struggling after moving to a new school with making friends and dealing with bullies in a real way that brings me back to the difficulties of being that age. On top of this the turbulence after discovering dangerous robbers makes this book tough to put down. Any teen or adult would enjoy this book!

I feel Run is a well-written book that will be enjoyed by middle school boys as well as girls. It is suspenseful and deals with believable problems and situations that middle school boys may encounter. The message is clear but not preachy. It was hard to put the book down!

Tyler Higgins family has moved. Now he is once again trying to fit in with the cool kids. The cool kids have ditched him in the woods. He decides he will get his younger brother to go into the woods to try and find the “cool kids” treehouse. When a storm hits they stumble onto an old house. As creepy as it is they slip inside. When they hear someone coming up from the basement they hide in a closet. When the coast is clear they escape. A run in with the creepy guy from the old house puts Tyler and his family in danger. When these would-be plumbers threaten him and his friends Tyler takes things into his own hands. Once again Glenn Haggerty has created a story that keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat.
