The story follows an innocent New York prizefighter from the Lower East Side who is framed by his gangster associates and eventually sentenced to "the chair" for a crime he did not commit.

The book is an expansion of Auslander's earlier poem "Knockout: A Fragment," which first appeared in his 1926 collection Cyclops' Eye.

It is set against a backdrop of the 1920s underworld, featuring speakeasies and boxing rings. The verse heavily utilizes contemporary street slang, and the original edition includes a "Slanglossary" to help readers decode terms like "glims" (eyes) and "hop" (drugs).

The first edition is known for its striking Art Deco-style illustrations and dust jacket art by Ervine Metzl
