Ryan Casey was hired as a bodyguard by a drug lord to protect his daughter after a kidnapping left her sister dead and her beaten. He was there to do a job and if she was going to resist, he would bring her to heel so he could get it done. He didn't care about her or her father, because he had another reason for infiltrating the organization. One that made him blind to the innocents he could hurt. Katya Nickolov was innocent. In fact, she was completely naïve of her father's dirty business until her captors revealed it to her. Then they inexplicably released her leaving her no place to go except back to a man she despised; her father. Furthermore, he hired a man who she didn’t know, to protect her. He was arrogant, demanding and unforgiving. Worst of all, he commanded her to obey him without question. This was something she refused to accept. Soon they discovered that they weren’t so different after all, and Katya had to make a choice between her family and the man who swore to destroy them.
Which was a bummer on many levels - and surprised me because I loved Warrior's Prisoner by the same author.
This thing had a TON of potential, folks.
The bodyguard character in this book was a hottie alpha with mad military badass skills. So badass in fact that I was even willing to overlook his use of the word "darling."
Side Note:
Unless I'm reading a historical romance book, I just do NOT want to hear the H use the word "Darling."
Ever.
In fact, it's up there with my complete and utter disdain for the word, "Honey."
(For the backstory on my hate affair with the word honey, see THIS review and THIS review...and I'll just throw THIS review in here too, solely because it's probably one of my favorite reviews ever.)
But anyway.
End side note.
As I was saying, this book had SO much potential; but sadly, I felt like the romance portion took a backseat to...other shit. And I felt like what WAS there was...meh.
Also, the h - who was pretty seasonable and seemingly semi-intelligent throughout the majority of the book - decided to suddenly have a TSTL moment that defied ALL TSTL moments in the history of ever.
But, I guess the author decided she needed yet another hostage situation and having the h act the fool was the only way to accomplish said goal.
Something that also bothered me for some reason - it usually doesn't - was all of the grammatical issues in this book. Incorrect uses of "was" and "were" as well as other issues abounded.
Basically, someone needs an editor who can differentiate between the subject of a sentence and the object of a sentence.
But - as I said - I'm not usually an asshole in this area, but sometimes my English degree asserts itself in confusing and wondrous ways. What can I say. There is no rhyme to my reason, people.
Anyway, that's really all I have to say. Plus, one of my dogs is barking nonstop in the background here and the washing machine just signaled "done," so I'm off to be domestic.
This was a great read. A slow and sweet romance, lots of danger and intrigue, and, of course, good winning over bad in the end
Ryan and Katya had an instant connection but their circumstances had them holding back. We get a nice build up as they get to know each other before they act. Ryan has to come to terms with what he is doing and why, and Kat's part in it all. Katya feels betrayed for her whole life, and more and more of that sense continues as the story contines
The one thing that is true for Katya is Ryan, and he is overtaken by how much he needs to be there for her. He re-centers his world around Kat and has no regrets doing it and making her the centre of his universe
Sweet and sexy, honest and true, that is what Ryan and Katya are to each other, and I loved every moment!
Wonderful story! Action, mystery and romance. Oh my!!
The hero is hot, a well oiled "machine" of a man who comes to realize that he is human after all and that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The heroine is a strong woman, who has been neglected and betrayed by the ones who should love her the most.
This story is action packed, a flair of mystery and many twists and turns. There are some hot love scenes too! They save each other in different ways, but you have to read the story to find out how. You won't be disappointed
Mostly an average read. Very different from other LW I have read- where the focus was romance. Here it was mostly the intriguing mystery of Katya and her sister's kidnapping and how after being rescued Ryan is hired to protect her. I felt really bad for the PTSD the heroine had to go through but somehow, that suddenly got resolved. Love scenes are only from midway through the book. From there, it was likable. Safe read. 3/5
WOW! About time we get a heroine that isn't a doormat. I love the fact that she gave as good as she got. Not the typical virgin that LW writes about. Uggghh! after a couple of books with the same type of heroine, who is nothing but a doormat, weak, and so insecure, this book was a breath of fresh air. It reminded me why I liked your books to begin with. I was starting to loose faith in you, but this book made me a fan once again.
Great characters, great storyline. I loved the surprise tie-in with another book...I won't spoil it :). Good HEA and great alpha male! I only wish the epilogue was further in the future to give you a taste but what was said was good.
