I didn't love this. I was probably being overly critical with some of it, maybe even prideful in some sense. ("I'm past needing this kind of teen Christian book, a lot of this doesn't apply to me," if we're being honest.)
But, once I was reminded not to be prideful or overly critical, I saw more good. (Also, I think the book got better in general too.)
There was a lot of truth here. A lot. I just didn't like having to dig through the writing style to find it. But again, I'll blame myself a little for my bias against the style.
In the end, I still feel a little like this book was a narrower and less well-written version of Look and Live. So like, it's not going on my recommendation list, but I'd read parts of it again.
I would have appreciated more straight talk about sin and less about how much we'll gain when we choose Christ over other things.
Not that we won't gain when we choose Christ. But the point that Christ is above all and before all... that got lost. Idolatry is idolatry not because we lose, but because we have given something created more honor than the Creator. That is that point. But that was not the point of this book, which was disappointing.
So yeah. There were really good points, and they referred to Scripture more than I expected, judging by the first parts. But overall I was disappointed. They came really close to some really solid truths, and just kind of skipped over the heavy parts.

From the press release:

Made to Crave For Young Women is modeled after TerKeurst's bestselling adult book, Made to Crave. In this new edition, the authors expand beyond the food-related focus of the original, and into all the other areas of craving shared by so many teenage girls. The authors acknowledge that the desire to make wrong choices is common and that most of us share such temptations. But, as TerKeurst writes, "Whether we are talking about guys, friends, food, body image, new clothes, or anything else we abuse to try to fill ourselves, nothing in this world can ever fill us like God's portion."

My Thoughts:

The book discusses three types of cravings--physical, material, and emotional. Each section of the book takes one of these cravings and discusses where we can fall into temptation and sin when we have wrong thinking about each subject. At the end of each chapter is a "takeaway" summary of what was discussed in the chapter. Also there is an action plan that encourages girls to keep a journal and challenges them to act on what they have learned in each chapter. Made To Crave for young women encourages girls to fill their lives with a loving Heavenly Father instead of filling their cravings with physical, material or emotional things. Filled with scriptures, encouragement and practical advice Made To Crave For Young Women can be used as a devotional or study group book. I know I will be passing my copy on to my nieces.

I would definitely recommend this book to students at my church. It is true that we crave many things - some good, some damaging. It is important that we have a craving for a deeper relationship with Jesus who is there to help us when our desires seem a bit overwhelming. Loved the truth in this book.

This book was pretty good, however if you are thinking of cravings other than food, you won't find a whole ton in here. At the same time, this is a good book to read if you want to crave God. I was a bit dissapointed that it was mostly about food cravings, but it was fine.

Made to Crave for Young Women: Satisfying Your Deepest Desires
with God by Lysa Terkeurst & Shaunti Feldhahn is a book that speaks to women of all ages. I was drawn in by the subtitle of the book, Satisfying Your Deepest Desires with God. I really struggle with this, but I know that is what the Christian life is all about. I read the rest of the book's description, and it seemed like it had some fresh ideas that weren't what is normally covered in a lot of the Christian Living books out there. I did see that it is for Young Women and it seemed like it was aimed at high-school teenagers. I saw that there was also another Made to Crave that is for women, but that one is just all about a woman's struggle with food, eating and weight and how she puts those cravings ahead of God. This Made to Crave for Young Women seemed to cover a lot more areas of struggles besides food that I thought would be more helpful to me.

Once I read it, I was so glad I had decided to give it a try! If you struggle in any other area besides eating, I would recommend this book over the other one because of the wider variety of examples and struggles that the authors cover. Of course, you have to remember that the two authors are speaking mostly to a teen audience, but as I am in my mid-20s and read a lot of young adult books, it did not bother me. It is also written in a way so that anyone can relate to it. Don't we all still deal with the same struggles that we dealt with in high school anyway, in some form or another? I know I do. Sorry for those who are still in high school, but those struggles do not go away, they just keep coming back in different forms. That's why it is so important to learn as early on as possible how to conquer those struggles with God's help! Lysa and Shaunti give the reader great practical advice on how to do that and make God our number one heart's desire.

The main point of the book is that we as humans put other desires and things in our lives before God. These "things" are what the authors call "God substitutes." They are emotional(the desire to be loved and accepted), physical (to be comforted by physical satisfaction and pleasure) and material cravings (a desire for something that makes us feel special, improved or new). These aren't necessarily bad desires in themselves. The problem comes when we automatically go to them first instead of God. These are desires that God wants to satisfy and only He truly can.

There are so many good things that I appreciate about this book. I love how Lysa and Shaunti go through each of the desires and give examples of what they are and how to overcome them. The authors are honest, genuine and down-to-earth. Lysa and Shaunti also give engaging personal stories from their lives to which many will be able to relate.

I find it to be very helpful that practical examples are interspersed throughout the book. Each chapter has a step-by-step action plan at the end that gives the reader a way to apply that chapter to her life.

An example is how Lysa and Shaunti believe one's cravings can be retrained. You will crave what you are focusing on. They give ways to change one's thought pattern by replacing the negative thoughts with positive ones through Scripture (they provide the reader with specific Scripture and exercises to help with this). By filling themselves with God and Scripture, the reader can be satisfied with God alone.

This is truly a wonderful read and I grew in my walk with Christ as a result of this book! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is a clean read.

I want to thank Zondervan, Lysa Terkeurst & Shaunti Feldhahn for the complimentary copy of this book for review.I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I express in this review are my own. This is in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s CFR 16, Part 255.

Chocolate. Caffeine. Boys. Friends. Shoes. Stuff. Diets. We all have cravings, and we all attempt to fill those cravings with different things or people. But the satisfaction is only temporary, or perhaps non-existent. Why is it that we can never find satisfaction?

In this book, Lysa and Shaunti speak to young women on cravings and desires. They discuss emotional, physical, and material cravings, and the wrong things we tend to look to in order to fulfill them. This ranges from food to shoes to shopping sprees and all the in-between. They discuss the error in our turning to these things for satisfaction, joy, and contentment, and also encourage you to take active steps towards abstaining from these tendencies and longings, instead turning toward God and his love for fulfillment.

There were several aspects of this book I liked. Lysa and Shaunti do a great job at connecting with areas that affect each and every one of us, relating well to young women. They are also honest and open about the difficulties of turning away from cravings and idols in our lives, not attempting to give you a false view of this journey. They use personal accounts, real-life stories, and great illustrations to relate to the reader as well as to keep your attention.

Overall I would say that this is a wonderful book for teens and young women. It is filled with truths that can and do greatly benefit the reader. I would recommend this to any and all young women!!

Note: I received a copy of this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, but my opinions are my own.

First, let me say that I won this book through a GoodReads giveaway. I didn't read the fine print, apparently, for I wasn't aware I was receiving the version for teenage and college age girls. It's been cough-cough years since I was a teenager, but I still enjoyed the book. Some of the struggles described do pertain to our younger years, but the basic issues of the heart are the same no matter in what stage of life a woman finds herself. I was able to translate the principles to things I struggle with now. I appreciated how Lisa TerKeurst points us away from making idols of created things to a true relationship with the Creator.

I was a Goodreads first reads winner of. Made to Crave for Young Women. this book has some important messages and lessons for young women. teenage girls who are Christians are given some lessons about how to deal with temptation and making decisions that would honor God. I only read parts of the book since I am an adult and my own daughter is in her 20s. I intend to pass this useful book on to another family who is trying to raise their girls to be good Christians. there a a series of the Made To Crave books. If my kids were younger I would gladly buy these books.

This book is written for teens, but I'm also getting some good advice from it. Satan tries to distract us from the gospel and separate us from the things of God. We should evaluate our own desires and make sure the things we pursue will bring us lasting happiness. Focusing on the gospel will keep us on track.

I like the advice about go-to-scripts such as "I am made for more. I am made for victory."

Excellent! This was a much needed read for me even though I'm not a teenager anymore. I wish I had this book when I was 15. I plan on passing it on to my friends and relatives.
This book takes you through many of life's temptations and how to over power (not just overcome) them God. I like that the authors use scripture to support their arguements. It's very simple to understand and easy to follow.

This is a great book for teenage girls. If I would have had some of this insight when I was in high school some things in my life might have ended up a little bit differently. I have passed it on to my two teenage sisters and told them they had to read it. I also plan to make it available in my classroom (I am a middle/high school teacher at a small Christian school) for female students.

I received a copy of this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

I thought the information in the book was helpful, but I was expecting more out of it. I knew it was for teens, but I would have wanted more from it when I was that age.

I read this to see if it would be a good study for a wide range of women and although the deeper message was great, the surface message about food issues was just too much and hard to look around.
