I am a huge LaShawn Vasser fan, and what I love most about her is her range. Each new book is like a box of chocolates-you never know what you're gonna get! Truthfully, she had me at the cover, and while this is a fictional account of one woman’s journey to self-discovery, it is also a precautionary tale of how not to get so absorbed in a man (husband or not), that you lose your complete sense of self.
Cree Jacobs is a southern gal through and through. She’s married to Cameron, a handsome blonde-haired, blue-eyed med student who’s in school hundreds of miles away in New York. Meanwhile Cree works multiple jobs back home to not only maintain a living where she is, but to also help support Cameron and his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Not only are these two dealing with a long-distance marriage, but they have become virtual strangers as a result of the separation. While Cameron is discovering new things and getting closer to becoming the doctor he’s always dreamed of being, Cree is stagnant and somewhat complacent. She merely exists and depends on the love of her husband for her happiness.
When Cameron accepts a residency at a New York hospital, Cree makes the ultimate sacrifice and uproots her life to be with her husband. Cameron has always made the decisions, often without discussing it with Cree first, and she goes along, cause you know, that’s her man, and that’s what good wives do (Chile, please.) Cree quickly learns that she doesn’t know Cameron at all. His friends aren’t overly welcoming (one female conspirator in particular) and he’s become this urban hipster who’s the antithesis of whom she fell in love with. And to top it all off, Cree is stuck in a rut-no goals and no plans to enrich her own life. That is, until an unthinkable tragedy strikes…
This was such a well-written, engrossing read. I don’t read stories like this very often where we’re introduced to an already-married couple who goes through trials and actually manage to work them out. This isn’t a story about a woman who was dogged out by her man then was rescued by another man. This is a story about a woman who was able to get through the fire because she was determined to in spite of all the obstacles. Excellent story. Click it up!
This is a new-to-me author who, on the basis of this book, I will look for more of her work.
In this book the couple is already married and very much in love. So where is the conflict? Well distance for one. Cree is at their hometown in a southern a small town working three jobs to help put Cam through school, while he is in New York pursuing medical school. That sort of monetary stress is difficult enough but when you add in a long distance marriage, well it amplifies.
I also liked the other, more ephemeral stresses... over the years more than miles have distanced them. Cam has assimilated into New York culture and seems to be moving forward in life while Cree is slowly coming to the dawning realization that life might be passing her by. I thought there were a lot of nice character beats, especially from Cree's perspective. She comes to several realizations about herself and her marriage which I thought were realized in a nicely organic way. The author did a good job of making us feel Cree's insecurities and her disconnectedness from Cam. It wasn't some big dramatic thing but rather cumulative thing.
Also, to the author's credit, she didn't pull any cheap stunts. The conflicts to the marriage were internal mostly. There were some external stresses but this was primarily a book about them as people.
Since the book is really mostly Cree's perspective it is very easy to sympathize with her. There were one or two moments you wanted to smack Cam, but on the whole he was a decent guy who was devoted to his wife but she was sometimes as much of a stranger to him as he was to her. The difference is Cree confronts it and Cam just wants everything to be ok and doesn't understand why it just isn't.
There is an incident that brings a lot of things to a head. I felt very bad for both of the characters in the aftermath, but liked where the story went later.
If I had a criticism of the book I would say that I thought Cree negative feelings & misgivings about New York became a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. She was dead set against being there so she didn't even try to make a life there. She realized that everything about her was too closely defined to her marriage, but if there was one place where you could potentially find something for yourself it is New York. I think the book would have been stronger if those scenes were expanded and maybe showed Cree getting more comfortable & starting to appreciate the opportunities available to her before the incident occurs that sends her back home. I think the impact would have been greater.
Also I thought Cree & Cam's -- reconnection -- felt rushed. I think it would have benefited from more page space. The pacing of the book felt like we took time with Cree's realization that her relationship with Cam and with herself had changed, but the "fix" in the end felt too quick.
I thought the writing was strong and flowed easily. I was very quickly immersed and invested in this relationship.
Wow! This was an emotional one for me. My emotions were all over the place. I really felt what Cree was going through with Cameron. When your life revolves around someone for so long you tend to lose yourself in the process. It took guts but I'm glad Cree took the necessary steps in order to find herself. And the love that Cameron had for her was undeniable. That kind of love, one can only dream about. The faith that he had for her was Unyielding. I absolutely loved this story! Great Job LV.
I thought this was a good read. This is my first by this author and she has a new fan in me. This was about a married couple that have been together since high school. It starts off with Cameron away in NY to become a doctor and Cree staying behind in there small town working two jobs to support him through college, basically she puts her life on hold to help him get his dream career. The plan was for him to finish medical school, then come home and do his medical residency. That way she could go back to school herself and finish her degree, but then he drops a bomb on her that puts a strain on their relationship, making it more stressful than it already was with him being 17hrs away and only seeing each other maybe once or twice a month. Cameron got chosen to do his residency in Ny and without Cree's knowledge accepted the offer. Therefor having Cree pack up her life and move to NY with him. Anyway not drag this review on and on basically they go threw tough times with her trying to fit in, jealously of his new friends and the life he built without her. So she decides she's had enough of being there for him and wants to find herself. They play the fight and make up game for awhile until they both are strung out then Cree gets assaulted and things go down hill from there and she takes off back home leaving Cameron to "find herself"
Well, I had a problem with that because it was very, very clear that these two loved each other deeply they grew apart yes but that love and respect for each other was so there and so HOT!.. To say you need to "find yourself" and find out what your all about? She could have done that with him. Cree in my opinion didn't have to leave Cameron to find out she loves the beach and doesn't like eggs it was already clear she loved sewing and making things. I don't think she gave it a good enough shot out there in NY but thats just my opinion... I loved the build up in this story I was on edge wondering what was going to happen next and reading about their relationship but the end just sorta felt flat. It would have been nice to see them find herself together now that he had a stable job and she could go to school and get to know one another give it that fight that long relationships need to have to make it. All in all really liked it I just would have loved to see them struggle it out together heres my couple
This book was chosen by the online book club to read for the month of November, this book was a pleasant read but it just didn't do it for me. The author had a great concept with the book but she didn't take it to the level I felt it could go.
I will say I loved how the books concept was about finding yourself. Many woman have lost themselves to their boyfriends or husbands dreams and didn't find their own dreams and Cree was a perfect example of that. She was married young. She pushed and supported Cameron for so long she didn't know who she was any more. I like how the author emphasized on the fact that by living in two different states that Cameron changed but Cree stayed the same.
What I didn't like and felt the book didn't need was the sexual assault to happen because Cree was already thinking about finding herself and going back home to do it. The sexual assault was over the top in this case.
All and all it was not a bad read. Like mentioned above the concept of the book was great but the story just needed more!
This book had it all. I loved the fact that Cree loved with her whole heart. It also showed how as women, that we give all of ourselves usually when you love that deep, which is never a good thing...It's wonderful to love deeply but not to the point, that you stop being you and then become a shadow of somebody else...That's what Cree did, I loved how she never blamed Cameron but accepted responsibility for allowing herself to get to there. I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review....Great Job Ms. Vasser!!!!!
Cree and Cameron.....childhood sweethearts who grew apart but never fell out of love.
I read romance to get away from real life but the beautiful way Ms. Vassar writes about real life situations draws you into a world, although filled with trials and tribulations, it's also filled with growth and hope.
I LOVED every second it took to read this story! It was sexy, sweet, heart wrenching, as well as heartwarming!
I was immediately drawn to this book because of the cover. I thought, now there's a woman who must absolutely be about her business.
Well unfortunately, at first, Cree was all about Cameron's business. For the last 6 years she has worked two jobs, lived in a less than stellar home and put her plans on hold to support her husband in his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Now, there is nothing wrong with her supporting her husband, in fact, it was refreshing to see someone believe so much in their man. The issue was that she believed so much in her man, that she had nothing left to believe and/or invest in herself. She no longer knew who she was, she no longer knew what she liked and the saddest thing was she didn't even know who she wanted to be.
Cree's ultimate devotion to Cameron had her living in NYC from her small town in MS - she hated the city, she didn't like or fit in with his educated, doctor friends, and she had no life or support system there outside of living for Cameron.
Unfortunately, a tragic event involving Cree was gave her the courage and wings to fly. This was the turning event in the book. I read the remainder of the book rooting for Cree. It was heartwarming to watch Cree discover who Cree is in addition to being JUST Cameron's wife. In turn, Cameron also discovered that Cree made some sacrifices for him and it was time for him to do the same.
It was a HEA, but I honestly wished she would have made him wait a little longer for the reunion before accepting him back. This was a really good story or young love, growing together, making a sacrifice and most i mportantly - knowing and loving yourself.
I really liked both characters who clearly love each other. Cree's commitment to her husband was understandable and natural yet quite rightly she did need to find herself. It is a situation that sometimes happens to couples especially those of unequal academic status. The traumatic event that Cree experiences is a turning point in her life and we see her come to terms with herself and gain her self-confidence and independence. Cameron learns the meaning of love, hard work and commitment. The tables are turned but throughout we know they both truly love each other. Yes. Both protagonists deserve their HEA. I really enjoyed this tale and would read more from this author.
What happens when a woman makes a conscious choice to delay her dreams for her husband's dream and lose herself in the process. This is the story of Cree and her choices. A story of a couple growing apart to come together. I enjoyed the journey however I didn't enjoy everything that took place for the self-discovery to happen. This author is one of my fave. I don't always agree with how she brings it but let me say this is one person that get's you to talking and thinking and certainly respects your point of view. Love me some LaShawn. Until next time keep turning them out.
After reading the blurb for LaShawn Vasser's "Cree", I was intrigued, but I'm not sure what I was expecting. This is an amazing story about love, doubt, fears, and understanding. Once again Mrs. Vasser's tugged at my heart with writing talents as my heart went out to Cree. Character Chemistry was on point and the storyline flowed from beginning to end. Thanks for again sharing your God given writing talents and I can't wait to read what you share next. T
This book was amazing. I took a break from reading romance novels because they all seemed to be the same. I'm more than happy I decided to take a chance on Cree. It is the best romance I've read. The characters and storyline were totally believable! After I finish reading the stack of books I have, I plan on reading it again (I do have another Vasser book to read! I'm super excited). Happy Reading :)
This was an IR story about Cree and Cameron. Cree put her life on hold, worked two jobs to help put her husband through med school. She's not angry about it, it's just one of those things a Woman does for the Man she loves.
The hard work pays off. Cameron accepts residency, and even though it's not where Cree initially wanted to go as Cameron accepted without discussing it with her, she goes anyway, the benefits that could help Cameron in his career, far outweigh her dislikes.
It's while living in New York that Cree finds out that the almost six years spent living apart from each other, have brought about changes to Cameron that she didn't know about, small subtle changes, like full cream milk vs almond milk etc. She makes a small personal discovery too, while she has spent so many years working to fulfil Cameron's dream, she forgot about her own and is left wondering, what it is she wants from her life. She doesn't feel that she fits in with Cameron's circle of friends and spends her time waiting for him to get home.
It takes an argument and a traumatic event, to get things rolling.
But in the end, true love prevails.
My only one complaint, why couldn't it be longer ................
Cree is a remarkable story has love, loss, triumph, despair, and most of all forgiveness. Cameron & Cree have definitely defied reasonableness when it comes to their lives. It is extraordinary to have someone that loves you so much that they will put their own lives on hold to make sure you have all you need. Cree was that rock for Cameron. Cameron in return became that rock for Cree when she was ......
I will admit I was actually expecting something completely different from the reviews. However I knew better because everyone has different likes and dislikes.
With that being said. This book was an okay read. I liked it but I didn't find anything over the top WOW about it. I enjoyed Cree's finally having a backbone, but they spend like all their time apart.. only to take just another almost year break finding herself. I was thinking...hmmm on one hand I get it, I understand completely, on the other..not so much, but hey it's a book and can be whatever the author wants it to be... *insert shoulder shrug*.
I also think cree was a little too quick to accept his apology for the whole co worker thing, I was like YEAH MAKE HIM SWEAT and then I was like... um wtfool that was far too fast.
Anita Baker's song "You give good love "played in my mind while reading this story...sometimes we give so much good love and get lost the person we are head over heels in love with we forget about loving ourselves...Cree and Cameron are so in love with each other, high school sweethearts growing up and experiencing growing pains...Cree supports him through thick and thin when he is disowned by his parents because she's black...she feels guilt and allows that to shape the relationship by totally supporting his medical career by working her fingers down to the bone, putting off her college aspirations just so he can become a doctor...she puts off her dreams until near tragedy brings a stone cold reality their little universe... very realistic romantic story.
Great read I loved how Cree was down for her husband and held him up during med school. Cameron was simply following her lead he put himself before anything else. That after all was the precedence she set. With that being said C and C is a couple you want to root for. I enjoyed the read I rated 4 stars because while Cree was finding herself I wanted to experience her recovery after her attack. But. I got to see her remain socially awkward and discover she did not like eggs. That reminded me of the run away bride movie with Julia Roberts and Richard genre. But all in all another great job by Mrs Vasser. Vicky and Jason still hold number 1 for my couple rank .
After reading the reviews I decided to give it a try, and I am really glad I did. The characters are so real and honest with their emotions. An amazing storyline that flows easily. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend. Thank you LaShawn. 😀 this is me right now .
Such an amazing story. Very emotional story to read. All the sacrifice, blood , sweat and tears she put in for her husband. I'm glad she took her life back. But like she said he had time to grow while she was stuck being the person she was in High school. It should never take a tragedy to help you see clearly and what needs to be done. Luckily it wasn't to late for them or their love. Very good book. Once again great work Mrs. Lashawn!
As always LaShawn Vasser has hit it out of the ball park with another great story!
Cree and Cameron were meant to be together, but Cree needed to find herself because she was so wrapped up in in Cameron's world she didn't have a life outside of his world. It took a horrible experience for Cree to get herself together before she's be in a happy, loving relationship with Cameron! The roller coaster ride was worth the trip LaShawn, Thank you for another great book!
This is my first read by LaShawn Vassar, she is amazing writing. I love her book so far. This story Cree had me from start to finish. I can relate to Cree story that in where she was abused in laundry room. It brought me back to what happen to years ago. But God be the glory.Amen. Happy that Cree and Cameron get past there stubbornness to get back together. Love do build a bridge in every situation. Looking forward to reading the nest book by Lashawn vasser.
First of all for me I loved the cover alone. I loved that she was chocolate brown skin and had natural kinky hair. The author even describe her according to the cover on the book. I get so tired of seeing light skinned women on the cover of these books. I wish this book could had lasted longer.
I loved this story and read it in one sitting. I can definitely understanding the feeling of not knowing where you life is headed.... and sometimes you just need to get away and figure it out. Cree was able to do that and still get her HEA. I'm a sucker for a fantastic HEA. Great job!
Cree is a very short read. I liked that though there were trials that the couple faced, they held to their beliefs and vows. I read some reviews that mentioned Cree being weak. I don't agree. I know that there are different ways people cope with problems. Her choice seemed realistic enough. I think there was strength in pulling through and learning to stand alone AND learning to love again.
This book is so relatable. While it wasn't in marriage or even in love, I too have wrapped myself up into one person so much that I unfortunately lost myself in the process. It can be really hard to 1.) understand that the problem youre having is that youre too wrapped up into one person and don't know yourself anymore and 2.) get out of the rut youve found yourself in.
I really enjoyed this book and how it was realistic yet still very romantic and well written. Life takes some twists and turns for this couple and they lose each other but it is terrific how they fins each other and reconnect. I do not want to give away too much but I would reccomend this-great read!
A brilliant story which I found very emotional, I didn't expect to read this story and get all up in my emotions, but it had me crying and all upset. The love that they had prevailed in the end, a wonderful story, my only complaint is that it was short, I could easily read more about Cree and Cameron.
when I saw the cover and reading the synopsis I wanted to read it. Cree dedicated her life to her husband Cameron to the point of not knowing herself. Seeing how she would discover who she was intrigued me. I was shocked by the attack and the separation but still enjoyed it
I can't give enough high 5's and thumbs up to this book. It had everything I love in a book. It made me laugh and also cry. Please keep these great stories coming. Can't wait for "Storm 2"
