I enjoyed this so much. I laughed out loud a couple times. If you're really protective over Death Note, be prepared for it to be poked at in jest a little bit. Also there is one character who misconstrues the relationship between two make characters, and I thought it was hilarious since the character was so jealous and not correct. I'm excited to pick up the third volume and continue along.

Our protagonist is first hospitalized for overwork, then finds that chaperoning a fieldtrip to the beach is even more work.

Handa loves cats soooo much but is allergic to them.

The author's note says this series is ~80% autobiographical.

It's a nice all ages Rural set Manga.

Nice characters all on the verge of doing outrageous things..but never quite pulling it off.

Central character calligrapher Seishu Handa is the stranger placed amongst the locals who seems to attract the comic children and elders to him.

Really beautiful slice of life.

World: The art is solid, it’s very thin line work but the characters are very expressive, especially Naru and it makes it beautiful. The world building is good, it’s small and intimate and very much a small town, every aspect of this book give off a simpler and more intimate relationship with friends and neighbours and the town making it feel very warm.

Story: The stories are well done, they are great slice of life with some nice little lessons and comedy. Not a lot of big ups and down but it’s about the simple things in life and the difference between town and city. It’s nice, the relationships really bring out the joy of this series.

Characters: Solid characters, there is development here but it’s not too deep and not to melodramatic. There is a sense of weight and calm to the characters making them both very fun but also very genuine.

I like this series.

Onward to the next book!

I laughed a lot in this volume. Nothing beats naturally unfolding humor.

Too funny.

We've got a pickle addiction (no really), a yaoi-fangirl in total denial, ghostie goos... The whole shebang.

If you want a laugh and a crazy batch of stories, this is the manga to read.

The "random stories that are just random" volume - we got the summer ghost story (hospital stay), the beach ep (more rocks and less bikinis), random adorable (kittens! Ferrals tho, and btw Handa-kun is allergic...)

It's cute but less cute. These little vignettes cannot sustain themselves much longer without something larger taking place. Nothing developed here in any substantial way. My favorite part is the old lady who runs the store.

Seishuu Handa is trying to survive the antics of the little kids in the village and the rumor mill. In this collection of adventures some kids misunderstand stranger danger signs, Handa tries to get a cat and it backfires, he goes shopping for ink and buys everything but, a local teen is super confused about how she feels about guy/guy manga stories, Handa lands himself in the hospital with overwork and the kids freak him out with ghost stories, he helps the kids with their summer calligraphy homework, and then he supervises a trip to the beach.

Some aspects of this are super funny, and others are so awkward and unnecessary that I want to pitch it across the room. I debated a 2.5 rating and rounding this up to 3 stars, but the uncomfortably awkward and completely unnecessary content overwhelms the funny. I think I'm done with trying this series. It's too bad because the premise has promise.

Notes on content: A handful of minor swears. As mentioned, one of the girls is conflicted about how she feels about guy/guy romantic manga (an illustration is shown of two kissing at one point) and then she's convinced there's something going on between Handa and another local guy...and it is uncomfortably awkward. The nurse at the hospital keeps telling Handa don't do things because she's a married woman (also uncomfortably awkward, Handa is completely innocent). Exhaustion results in hospitalization. Handa believes the ghost is real at one point.

This one was great! Tama is secretly into yaoi and comes across Sensei hugging Hiroshi and believes that Sensei may be gay... feeding into her fantasies and creativity as an aspiring manga artist. Love it.

This is a really wholesome manga. There’s a great cast of characters, almost all of them are likeable. The comedy is amazing and the stories are fun to read. The manga is in the slice of life style, with some continuity between chapters but they are mostly independent.

Continuing the story of Sei Handa and his time on a remote island. This volume is just as enjoyable as the first in this slice of life series. It's fun getting to know the residents of the island better and watch Handa slowly gain a deeper appreciation for life beyond competition and ambition.
