I love this guy’s passion! I felt like he was shouting at me for the whole book! He ended every other sentence with an exclamation mark! And while I found it funny at first, it really drove home the all-importance of understanding this Mystery of Godliness- Christ in me.
This one took a lot of brain power to chew through. And my phone is now full of quotes I’ve photographed from its pages. This book was incredibly challenging in all the right ways for me, exploring in strenuous detail the meaning and significance of the First Man, Adam, and the Second Man, Christ, and the chance we have to be in-dwelt by the very Holy Spirit of God.
Just one of the many quotes I saved from its pages, this one gives a good idea of what this guy is talking about:
“For godliness is not the consequence of your capacity to imitate God, but the consequence of His capacity to reproduce Himself in you; not self-righteousness, but Christ-righteousness; the righteousness which is by faith—a faith which by renewed dependence upon God releases His divine action, to restore the marred image of the Invisible God.”
My head hurts, but I will definitely read this one again. It’s everything I most deeply believe, put into fresh words and metaphors that really shed new light on this mysterious and life-giving Truth.
For me Ian Thomas is in the top three list of authors who really speak to me. He puts into words what has always seemed right in my heart as I have learned about Jesus through His word. This book further emphasizes his theme that to live the life we are called/invited to live we must recognize and surrender to the truth that God wants to live that life in and through us....it's not my self sufficiency and skill that will live that life...it's more about my trust and reliance in His perfect sufficiency.
