The The Taylor Morrison series centers around Taylor Morrison, a private investigator whose life is turned upside down when she suddenly develops psychic abilities. We're not talking X-Men, comic book, mutant type stuff here. Instead, this is the kind of thing you've always wondered about. Or at least I have. The idea that maybe we aren't utilizing our brains to their fullest. That maybe if we tried hard enough, we could do stuff and if we could, what sort of ramifications that would have.
The Molly McMurray Mysteries is a new series. The main character is, of course, Molly McMurray. There's a psychic 'twist' to this series as well, and his name is Kaegan. Who he is, and the role he plays, I'll leave to you to discover.
Having moved over 32 times, Cat Gilbert now makes her home in Arkansas with her husband and their dog, Clancy. When she's not writing, she spends her time trying to figure out a way to keep the deer from eating her blackberries and fig trees, experimenting with new Paleo recipes, and attempting to convince Clancy that playtime has to wait until she finishes the chapter.

One of the worst books I have ever read. I had to force myself to continuing reading, thinking it has to get better, but it didn't. Convoluted, confusing, who's your buddy, who's not. Plus, between all the coffee that woman drank and all the long, long constant showers she took, she had to be water-logged inside and out. And, with the power she had, there were so many instances when she could have alleviated the situation, but did not. A plot is a good thing - but so many, and twisted, interchanged, convoluted and right up to the end. But, I persevered to the end just to see how it would end and then I wished I had gone with my original instincts and quit the book after reading about 1/4 to 1/3 of it. You can bet I will never buy one of Cat Gilbert's books, only having gotten this one because it was free or I most likely would not have considered it. That is the nice thing about getting books free, it introduces you to new authors and lets you decide if it is worth paying money to read any of their other books..

This is one of those epic quality reads you find buried amongst the drivel of free books offered on Kindle. (This one from Kindle Australia)
A fast paced action thriller based around a paranormal theme, the writing is extraordinarily good with believable characters you could invest in. The plot was heightened by the fact that the characters, and indeed myself, couldn't work out who were the goodies or baddies, who could be trusted.
While it lost my interest a little with the government conspiracy twist, (not my thing at all) the paranormal plotline ensured I couldn't put the book down.
Highly recommended, I can't wait to read more in the series.

Just too much
This book really didn't work for me! Too many people that I didn't get to know. I was left with "how?" and "when?"; instead of expanding and perfection ng the storyline, another facet started. One of the most frustrating books ever.

In Cat Gilbert’s Brain Storm (The Taylor Morrison Psychic Thrillers Book 1), Taylor is just starting to realize she’s a telekinetic. Most of the signs she could see as her imagination running wild, but when she really wants a man’s coffee and it comes flying right at her, she can’t pretend any more. Unfortunately, that man seems to realize something strange is afoot, and he starts following Taylor. Along with Taylor’s friends and acquaintances (lawyer Trinity, Trinity’s Mama D, and detective Jonas), she falls into the middle of some sort of conflict between two groups that want her. She knows that one of the two is definitely bad, but she really isn’t sure about the other either.
Taylor and her acquaintances are on the run, and twisty allegiances occasionally put them in the bad guys’ crosshairs. There are some definite parallels to Firestarter, particularly in that there are people who want to use her as a weapon. The buildup of Taylor’s abilities makes for great pacing. The book skirts the fact that no one’s ever been able to prove that psychic abilities exist by claiming: “take away the choice, and you lose the ability.” (Thus also showing why the purported good guy group doesn’t in any way force psychics to work for them.) Which… aren’t there ways to test for psychic abilities that the psychic might choose to participate in? And how on earth would the very act of participating in a test take away abilities? This is extremely flimsy justification for the fact that no one knows psychics exist. I think it would have been easier to just say that some people know they’re real and others just refuse to believe and leave it at that.
I’m not entirely fond of Trinity as a character. Her archetype is “woman who was abused as a child and as a result hates all men,” and I just don’t enjoy hates all men/hates all women characters. It makes it hard for me to identify with Trinity. Also, Mama D is pretty much the stereotype of the tough-love, needs to feed everyone, beloved mother. Some of the other characters are more complex and interesting, such as the detective. I also feel like Taylor herself was never fully-realized on the page, other than her overriding character trait, which is to try to protect her friends by cutting them out of the loop. Over and over.
All in all good but not great, and I’m wobbling on whether I’ll read the second book in the series.

Good Action and Characters, But the Emotional Angst Slows the Story
Brain Storm introduces us to Taylor Morrison, Private Investigator and high-volume coffee drinker. Her story follows a familiar path for paranormal novels, as she discovers she has psychic abilities, only to find out that others already know and that they will kill to capture her. She ends up on the run with her friends, trying to understand her new skills and how they can be used to save the day. While this sounds like a formula for a taunt, action-packed thriller, the constant angst of the protagonist and the bickering among the characters hurts the overall pacing.
There is plenty of action in Brain Storm, from a bank heist (of sorts) to commando-style raids to car bombs and gun battles. These scenes are well-written and tense. The suspense and mystery are also good, primarily because of all the double-crosses and mixed allegiances of the characters. I also enjoyed the secondary characters – Trinity, Jonas, and Mama D. They are well developed and likable. There is a twist in the story; unfortunately, it uses a ploy that has become all too common in thrillers. Once I read the setup in the first few chapters, it was just a matter of waiting for this shoe to drop.
The pacing of the book, however, is inconsistent. The pages with action flew by, but in between, the story dragged. Part of the problem was the author’s tendency to repeat events. For example, when Taylor’s friends did not see the action inside the bank, Taylor repeats for them, even though the reader has already been through it. But the major hit on pacing comes from Taylor’s emotional angst and the frequency of bickering over trivialities among the friends. For example, at one point Taylor worries that Trinity will want a scientific explanation for her abilities and she hopes that she can be forgiven because there isn’t one. (“I was going to disappoint her if that’s what she was looking for and I just had to hope she could forgive me for it.”) Isn’t that like apologizing because you’re breathing someone else’s air? Fortunately, the angst is less prevalent later in the book.
Even though the plot is a bit well-worn and the twist somewhat common, the author’s voice is fresh and the action scenes are good. The major problem comes in pacing, where Taylor’s inner battles and bickering among the characters slow the story to a crawl.

Great Big Conspiracy Theories, Action, Adventure, "Put Your Thinking Cap ON" Kind of Book!
Great storyline, although rather far-fetched. Highly entertaining if you can keep all of the characters multiple names straight in your head, since the same character can have a real name, an alias for the "good guys," and an alias for the bad guys, or even names for other pertinent government and national agencies. It can get very confusing, very quickly if you're not paying close attention.
I liked the characters, the storyline, the multiple plots, and the premise for the action/adventure/mystery. However, this book seriously needs to be edited by someone who is familiar with proper English usage. There are sentences running together that need punctuation, spelling error corrections, and a dictionary for using the correctly spelled words during times when similar words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings are substituted by mistake.
That being said, I enjoyed much of the book, but found myself flipping back one page or more, multiple times, just to figure out who was who, and try to sort out why the story was suddenly going off on a new tangent. Much of the confusion could've been avoided completely with a superb editor. I'm also disappointed that the email address given at the end of the book, and that the link for a free follow-up book are invalid, and in order to get the download, you have to use the BookFunnel application, which I don't use or want.
Great story, but it needs the tender loving care of a talented editor to iron out spelling errors, word misuse, sentence flaws, and help the sentence structure flow better, for an easier read, and a little less overall confusion caused by the overwhelming abundance of action occurring simultaneously throughout the book to characters who change their names like some people change their minds--quickly, and over and over again.
If action, adventure, spy intrigues, and mysteries, are book traits that you enjoy, then you've chosen the right book to read,...onwards and forwards...happy reading!

This is the first book I've read from author Cat Gilbert. I've read a free ebook version of this title.
The novel falls in the action thriller category. Generally, I found the story and action too slow paced to unravel and happen. The story and characters are not as interesting as expected. It seemed to me that the author took characters and stories from different successful books, TV series and movies and patched them together in one novel.
The leading character, Taylor Morrison, is a bit more creative because she's not a top notch achiever. She's a private investigator searching for ex-husbands late in their alimony working in Little Rock, Arkansas. Furthermore, it is her who's in the middle of the case instead of chasing the criminals. However, she's always too late in understanding anything that's happening around her.
The other characters, Taylor's friends, are like characters one has read before. Just like Taylor's special abilities and story are déjà vu.
The author failed to convince readers that a fiction world where people like Taylor Morrison does exists. There should have been less description of daily normal activities such as drinking coffee, eating and shopping. The author should have developed the story a lot more with more historical and scientific details to make real the world with Taylor and her special abilities.
This book is an okay book with a nice attempt at creating a new world, but there were many flaws with the characters, the story and action.

Stealing a few lines from other reviewers I agreed with... I had to force myself to continuing reading, thinking it has to get better, but it didn't. I can't believe this took 11 days to read! It just kept plodding along! Convoluted, confusing, who's your buddy, who's not and all the bloody aliases. Totally lost track of who was who and just didn't care. I found Taylor to be quite the bitch and it seemed like any comment would cause her to hulk out. Not a person I would like to babysit. Really, what was with the freakin' coffee? Got so tiresome. And, with the power she had, there were so many instances when she could have alleviated the situation, but did not. A plot is a good thing - but so many, and twisted, interchanged, convoluted and right up to the end. I also felt like a lot of things were left hanging, like Jason getting shot in front of the SUV for no apparent reason and all we hear later is that everyone is OK and someplace safe in the compound. I am not a DNF reader but wish I was. I really thought this had potential and had many thoughts of plot path and series scope but nothing materialized. Not liking the "tune in next time" to catch the last of the closing conversation. Have absolutely no desire to read the next book.

When the next day, another strange thing happens and she knows something is going on, but what?
Now as Taylor's abilities start to come more and more, she is running for her life and her friends are taken with her. An investigator begins to experience psychic phenomena only to realize she has been a target of competing governmental interests all her life. The malevolent ones will stop at nothing to exploit her even if it means death and destruction for her friends. On the run with the few people, she can trust she must learn to control her abilities if she is to confront the evil that pursues her.
I am mixed on this book. It had potential but quickly devolved into a government conspiracy adventure. The pace is interrupted by the lead's incessant coffee drinking and hot showers. It was hard to believe that the presumed demise of a respected cop and a well known hotshot attorney would get such little attention. You need a scorecard to keep track of who is who and who can be trusted and who cannot. Confusing in spots it ultimately fails to satisfy. Would have been more fun had she not been the target of these super-secret organizations but just had to cope with telekinetic powers. Still, I read it all the way through and it wasn't bad, just silly and unbelievable.

Initially I had my doubts about this book. The punctuation was strewn with errors, the style was clunky and there were a few moments of questionable political correctness - all of which nearly led me to drop it and read something else.
Slowly but surely though this book won me over. The characters are interesting and detailed, the story twists and turns - keeping you interested and unsure of where it will take you next. Each new discovery and reveal works with more than a few leaving me totally dumbstruck. The action is well narrated and fast paced, while still giving you space and time to keep up with what is happening. Taylor is a character I found myself rooting for to succeed.
There are some inconsistencies that grate and the punctuation leaves a little to be desired but I found myself willing to overlook these facts in favour of the wider story that Cat was telling.
It is likely that I'll be back to check out the rest of this series - after I've caught my breath reading something else.

🤔 an exciting read
When I started this I didn’t know if I would continue the series or even the book. When it got to the point of seeing that they would have to irrevocably change their lives I didn’t know if I could make it through this book. When I saw how they’re shaping Taylor up to be a formidable opponent to her foe I started feeling the book more. I’m trying to determine if I’ll start the second book or read a palate cleanser before going back in.
I like that Taylor is strong and doesn’t wait around to be saved. I also like that she is able to take help and accept criticism unlike some bullheaded lead characters. I look forward to seeing her growth through the rest of the series.

Teamwork
Taylor finds herself in a pickle and before she can figure it out, she is on the run with her best friend, a work colleague and her mother figure….oh yeah and a special new person, her watcher. The reasons and powers are unknown, but the story does a great job of sharing how she is learning, her confusions, and all the unknowns. There are great visuals of the action, cars, outfits, and powers. It is a fascinating world and I can’t wait for another book to learn about more of these powers and see more of Lars, Mac, Connor, Jenny and of course Taylor’s friends who were on the run with her!

Brain Storm started slow. I almost gave up on it because it was moving so slowly. I decided to stick with it until I was at least a third of the way through it because it was the first one in the series. I figured she was taking her time setting the stage and building the characters. I am so glad I hung in there. Once Taylor and her friends were attacked, the story never slowed down. It was so good I had trouble putting it down. She has an unconventional group of friends. She is a private investigator. Her best friends are a lawyer, a police detective, a "spy", and her best friend's grandmother. I was hesitant to commit to the series, but I have decided to stick with it for a while.

The 1st half of the book was certainly promising. But as the story progressed, the story became more and more, fictional. It reached levels of total confusion. A friend became foe. Foe became a friend. All according to the author mood. Without any preparation and without explanation. And then towards the end the fictional story became a fictional and unreliable conspiracy - to say the least.
Anyway, the book is perfectly readable if you do not take it too seriously. It for the psychic genre lovers.

This Is a very violent novel that I would not usually read but I am trying to clean out all the free books. Give it a try it may work for you. Excellent array of well-developed characters
A great balance of strong, clever female and male characters. The main character is very believable and handles her gift/ talent/ burden in very human ways. Her friends have multi-faceted personalities. One can't always know who to trust which keeps the reader on tense ground. Surprises keep coming in this fast-paced, Non-Stop action story.

This book was good. Entertaining enough that I can see myself reading the other books however I did feel like there was alot going on for a first book in a series. Just seemed to keep going and going, like the author just needed to add all these awesome senerios one after another, which did make it very entertaining but otherwise wasnt really needed. Overall I enjoyed the story..it was kind of like a good action movie.

Brain Storm is a well-written and well-crafted story with plenty of turns to keep the reader wanting more. Great character development had me invested in the protagonist and her friends. A traumatic event triggers the main character’s latent psychic abilities. She doesn’t understand what’s happening to her, but knows bad people are willing to kill to get to her. The chase begins, and the people she trusts and love are caught in the middle.

I felt exasperated at anything that took me away from this book, it was that good. With more and more people admitting to experiencing the paranormal, this tale puts a toe just over the line of what we generally believe to be possible. When something shocking happens to Taylor, she actually reacts like a normal human being would act. Even though she may have a super power, she’s not a superhero. This author brings the paranormal into the normal, and I loved it.

Too much coffee!
I thought this book was entirely too long. The plot was unique and pretty good, but I don't think anyone could drink that much coffee. Some of it could have been taken out and it would have been much better. You are left with some unresolved issues at the end of the book.

I was surprised
When I started reading this book I wasn't sure how much I would like it but it was much better than I expected. The characters are likable and I enjoyed how much a family atmosphere was gathered under unusual circumstances. The story line is fairly fast paced and it is easy to get swept away with all that is going on. While far fetch it's easy to enjoy it.

Great premise and hard to put down. Got very choppy in places. Name changes were confusing and largely unnecessary after the first set. The conspiracy didn't quite hang together as it was meant to and the final twist was a bit of a flop. Needed a good beta reader to nail the loose ends. A good read though. I enjoyed it.

Great book with unexpected ending.
The book was really good from the beginning it got my attention but toward the middle i couldn't put it down. The ending was so unexpected and I can't wait to get the next book to see what happens next. The author did a great job developing the characters.

This is one of the best books I have ever read!
Amazing characters and a killer plot make sure to keep your interest, on the edge of your seat, till the end of the book! For anyone who enjoys psychological twists and loads of suspense, this is a great choice. I can't wait to continue the series!

I’m torn in rating this book. While I did enjoy the story, I wouldn’t recommend it. There were a few spelling errors and even incomplete sentences - pet peeve! Anything that could have been avoided by good editing but winds up in the book anyway, totally irritates me. That added with the cliffhanger ending and it was disappointing.

OH MY GOD!! This book is incredible! I didn't know what to expect going in but every time I thought I knew where this story was heading it did a complete 180 and threw me through a loop. I highly recommend this book to people who have a spare few hours as once I got started I could NOT put this book down. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!!

Thank you to Voracious Readers for my copy! Not usually my type of book, but I found myself entertained the whole way through and rooting for her. Not a fan of the fact her main personality trait was being addicted to coffee, but it was kind of like a joke by the end. Longer than it needed to be, but I enjoyed it.
