How to create a successful food blog

Rate this book
The world has changed dramatically over recent years. Now, via the Internet; you can reach a global audience at zero cost, from the comfort of your living room – and make real money.

The Internet is a level playing field, which means that the opportunity to attract an audience is equal for everyone. Just as an individual on YouTube can attract more eyes than a large corporation with a big marketing budget, a food blogger can attract a large audience to rival the big players in the food industry.

As long as you have great content, a targeted audience, effective marketing, a good technical platform and a lot of enthusiasm, you can build an audience. This book will help you identify and build each of these things.

Why be a Food Blogger?
A food blogger is someone who writes publicly about food on their own personal website (blog). The content could be quite generic, covering many aspects of food; or it could be focused on a specific area of food such as baking, cupcakes, sausages, restaurants, farmers’ markets, food photography, etc.

What draws most people into food blogging is a passion for something food related, whether that is cooking, baking, dining out, photography or whatever. They have the creative urge to post their thoughts as words (and photographs) on the Internet, to share them with their friends and the public; just to see what happens.

Those who stick with it usually find out that the world of food blogging (aka the ‘food blogosphere’) is quite addictive. Blogging is a very friendly place and being a social environment, people share things and learn from each other by posting, reading, commenting, chatting, tweeting, etc. It is really nice to get feedback on your blog posts – which in itself is a strong motivator to post more and more recipes and articles.

Apart from gaining knowledge, respect from their peers and getting involved in an (ever growing) online food blogging community, bloggers also get the opportunity to meet people in the real world at blogging conferences, potluck cooking events and other fun meets – even food oriented holidays! It’s great to meet up with someone and start talking with them, only to realise that you have been reading their blog recently (this happened to Paul at the first Food Blogger Connect conference he went to!).

Three important points to know about food blogging are:
1. It doesn't cost anything
Yes you can pay for a nice looking website, but many bloggers don’t as it’s the content that counts
2. It is easy to get started
You don’t need to have a degree in computing to get set up.
3. You can blog whenever you want to
There are no rules and no deadlines

All this Sounds Good – So what’s the Catch?
The only ‘catch’ is that it takes up some of your time. At first it will take up a lot of your time as you will want to get to grips with the blogging processes, write content, take photographs, make your website look nice, etc. But once all that is done and you get familiar with the whole process, it shouldn’t take you too long to write new blog posts. You should get into the habit of building up a collection of photographs and blog posts, so that you can schedule them to appear on your blog at regular periods – this makes blogging easier and saves you a lot of time.

If you need some motivation on becoming a food blogger (or just want a giggle), we can highly recommend watching the film Julie and Julia.

Before you start blogging, check out lots of food blogs to get ideas for the type of blog you’d like to write – in terms of content, writing style and design.
