Kids like Gus have a price on their heads. Seven years ago, the Affliction raged like a forest fire, killing billions. The only children born since are part of a new breed of human-animal hybrids. Gus is one of these children, a boy with a sweet soul, a sweeter tooth-and the features of a deer. When vicious hunters descend on his isolated forest home, a mysterious and violent man called Jepperd rescues Gus. The hulking drifter promises to lead Gus to The Preserve, a fabled safe haven for hybrid children. As the two cross this dangerous new American frontier, will Jepperd corrupt the boy he's nicknamed Sweet Tooth, or will Gus's heart change Jepperd? Written and illustrated by spectacular talent Jeff Lemire, SWEET TOOTH is a haunting tale of survival in post-apocalyptic America of friendships formed in tragedy, and the good and bad in humankind. Collects SWEET TOOTH #1-12, as well as never-before-seen sketches and an introduction by celebrated actor Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex, Frost/Nixon).

I'd always had this series on my TBR, but just thought it wouldn't be my thing, humanoid animals.. boy, did I have not a clue. This kicks off with the five-part Sweet Tooth, Volume 1: Out of the Deep Woods, where we find antlered (Gus) and his dad seemingly alone living in a cabin in the woods, but nothing last for ever. The beauty of this book so far, is seeing the reality through Gus's eyes, who's never left the woods in his life, allows the truth of this reality to slowly reveal itself as Gus has to venture outside of his safe space. Loved the unique art that fits so well with this series too. 8 out of 12, for the first half.

Sweet Tooth, Volume 2: In Captivity, has three points of view alternating Gus in the present, and Jepperd's past and present; and a one-shot featuring a doctor's thoughts. Expanding the POV widens the book's scope as we not only see Gus's plight, we see Jepperd's and thus the reality's backstory. The understated feel of the book works well with the sparsely post-apocalyptic reality. The mystery and mythos captivated me, and if I wasn't sure I was hooked before, I sure am now! 8 out of 12 across both the first two volumes that make up this edition.

Good, but not great.

Gus was born a hybrid. He is a boy with deer antlers and ears. Together with his father he lives in the woods, which his dad has warned him never to leave. When his dad passes away, he has to fend for himself and quickly gets into trouble. We learn that some kind of disease has killed most of the population and that only the hybrids are immune. So people are after them and Gus has to be rescued from two hunters by former hockey player and perpetual badass Jepperd, who promises to get him to 'The Preserve,' a refuge for hybrids. And thus begins their road trip through the post-apocalyptic landscape. Not without some serious obstacles, of course.

I like Lemire better as a writer than as an artist. He's done both the text and the artwork here. And while Michael Sheen in his foreword has written several paragraphs about how great it is, even comparing it to Van Gogh's The Potato Eaters, my verdict is that it’s scratchy and a little ugly.

What I do like, and here I agree with Sheen, is the panel composition. This had some really nice and clever moments.

Also, the art is rather sparse and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I hate these super busy panels that make it almost impossible to tell what's going on in them. This comic has a refreshing focus on the essential. There's nothing that distracts from the story. I'd say overall the art works well, without being pretty.

The plot takes several turns that have one thing in common. I saw them all coming. Don't get me wrong, the story is told well. But it's also something that feels like I've already read it a couple of times. The big questions though, i.e. is this a man-made pandemic and what is the hybrids' and especially Gus' role in it, those remain unanswered as of now. And Lemire also strikes a nice balance between the inevitable violence and the heart and kindness of some characters. That was good.

Overall, 3.5 stars.

I enjoyed this and will surely read the other books as well.

Melts my heart away...

DC Comics' Vertigo imprint stands out with these one-off original series and Sweet Tooth is no exception. Its beautifully illustrated, heart-warming and sugary.

Definitely continuing with this series and looking forward to Netflix adaptation. 4.5 stars .

I've called Lemire's artwork rough in the past but that's not quite right. It's cartoony. A style blending comic strips and minimalism.

The story follows Gus, a boy with antlers living in the Nebraska woods who is saved by a grumpy old cuss named Mr. Jepperd. It's a post-apocalyptic story with heart, horror, and surrealism, and it's more damn fine work from Jeff Lemire.

Notes on the Deluxe Edition...

More mixed results from Vertigo. Nice standout white dust jacket, sturdy hardcover, but glued binding and pulpy matte paper make it feel cheap. I mean, it's oversized, durable, and worth owning. But it's not amazing.

I’m convinced that Jeff Lemire is the greatest creator in comics working today and every new thing that I read from him provides further validation. Sweet Tooth is relatively early work from Lemire but I’m just now getting to it. And to put it simply, the book is stunning.

It takes place in a post-apocalyptic U.S. after a pandemic has wiped out much of the population, and follows a young boy named Gus, one of the rare human/animal hybrids that are born with immunity after the outbreak and just might be the key to finding a cure. After leaving the cabin that he lived in all his life, he sets out on a journey with a tortured stranger named Jepperd to find safe haven.

I wasn’t quite prepared for how emotionally powerfully this story would be, and how attached I would get to these characters, a testament to how efficient Jeff Lemire is at developing them, especially Jepperd, who’s backstory we glean through flashbacks. The book also has action and post-apocalyptic violence that is visceral and occasionally a real punch to the gut. I’m not sure what I expected to read after seeing the cover art, but the content here was much more powerful than I anticipated. This is definitely a book for adults and it’s rewarding in its maturity.

Lemire’s art is often seen as an acquired taste but it is always creative and expressive, and his writing is always perfectly paced and never overdone. He just really has a knack for telling stories in sequential art!

This is a comic where due to the cover and the title name, that I didn't have any interest in reading. But my GR friend Dave Schaafsma, who has wonderful opinions on a variety of books, made a convincing argument for this to be read. I am glad, as usual, for taking his advice.

Sweet Tooth is a great comic. A story at once epic in scope, that is filled with violence and a sense of overwhelming loss. It is also a poignant story and the dark tone makes for a wonderful story environment. While the artwork would normally not be to my taste, in this post-apocalyptic setting it works well with the story. It's never pretty or even good, but neither is this world we are in. Save for Gus, Sweet Tooth, the rest of the people in this are either weak or awful.

A plague has killed off most of humanity. The only people immune are a new race of hybrid humans who are part-animal and part-human. These children are in high demand because they may hold a cure from the plague. Gus is a special boy. He lives alone, with his father, in an isolated cabin. His father's death will change his life forever as he ventures out into the wasteland to find out what is going on. Along the way, he will be accompanied by Jeppard, a companion/protector who has his own agenda.

A dark and interesting story. Lemire's work is certainly entertaining. Consider me a Sweet Tooth fan and I shall be getting Vol 2 of this as soon as I can. Highly recommended.

I read Sweet Tooth years ago but with the show on now I figured I'd revisit it.

The story of Gus is pretty strong. Having been left to fend for himself in this cold world after his father passes away is a touching and realistic view on what we're used to in this post apoc world. It is when Jepperd comes into the picture things take a interesting turn for the first half of this book as it feels very Last of Us. Protecting each other, learning about each other, and then the big reveal half way through changes both their stories.

It is in the later half we get deeper background of both characters which helps resonate with both in very different ways. I still think the art is...unique. It is not my favorite, and usually not a fan of most of Lemire's art. It worked amazing in Royal City but here less so. However, it is far from bad it just isn't my favorite style. Saying that Lemire is telling a simple but very powerful story that will work for alot of people.

There's a reason this comic got made into a series. A 4 out of 5.

Sweet tooth? More like Sweet heart...

I fell in love with Gus instantly. His character is so pure and bright. He’s always trying to do right and, thankfully, they don’t go over broad with the “homey/backwoods” characteristics.
The colors seem to be important. There are a lot of blues and softer colors in the start, while the rest of the world is grey. The further you get into the world the darker the colors seem and it really sets the tone.
Lemire’s art is just amazing and I find myself studying pages slowly before I continue reading.
I really like the story so far, especially for a “end of the world” series. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from lemires work it’s that it’s best not to guess at anything, because what he actually has planned is 1000% better then what I could have come up with. This book has a lot of twist and turns, but also a lot of compassion and hope.

*** the second time reading this, I saw more of “The Walking Dead” then I had previously.

-Gus's doe eyes are even more powerful on big paper and it's devastating to look at them. :puddle of emotions:

Had this one as a to-read since I saw Netflix has adapted it into a live-action show, and originally planned to read the comic first, but watched the first two episodes with my partner instead. And we're enjoying it! So far we like the characters (my partner's favorite is Jepperd) and the worldbuilding. So, I thought I'd read enough of the comic to catch up.

This was a mistake.. I expected to really like it, but the show is very different. So I decided to just read the whole of Book One (five parts). The comic's plot, antagonists and action hero just felt too familiar, like I'd seen it before. The unique aspect, which i was most looking forward to, was Gus the 9yo deer-human hybrid.

But even then, the artwork style... didn't help. Its pretty ugly, to be frank, but I've read manga with ugly artwork before. In this case though, everyone looks monstrous. Sometimes it fits the story as it's pretty dark. More often than not though, it was hard for me to take scenes seriously when Gus looked like a 30 year old man with antlers. It was creepy.

ok so i just binged watched the first season of sweet tooth, loved it, and then binge read book 1 of the series. i tend to want to read before i watch but in this case i just really needed to start a new show (been trying to not re-watch the same things) and honestly i'm glad i watched first because i would have put off reading the comic which would put off watching the show and both were Really Good. there are definitely differences between the two - the comic was darker, both in terms of art and storyline. but the show and the comic work in their own ways, i wouldn't say one is better than the other.

anyway i need to read the rest of the series asap since who knows when netflix will release the next season.

I didn't review this at the time because I was too enthralled, and I won't review it now because I love this story too much and there's a lot to unpack, and I've never been the best at brevity. However I am just here to give a warning: DO NOT READ THE FORWARD. IT SPOILS PARTS OF THE STORY. Idk why they thought it would be a good idea to give away plot points, themes, and the general trajectory of the story before the reader even starts.

If I had read Sweet Tooth, Book One before watching the live action Netflix adaptation, I think my opinion would be higher for the source material. I really like the look, the tone, and the world-building of the show, but this not so much. I also had to remind myself several times that Gus is supposed to only be nine years old when more than half the time I would have guessed by his appearance that he was well into adulthood.

Jeff Lemire si mě už získal dávno a s příběhem Guse a Jepperda to pokračuje.

Ač tu máme klasické klišé apokalypsy a dvojice drsný dospělý a děcko tak to funguje naprosto parádně a postavy si nelze nezamilovat. A TO JÁ SAKRA CHCI.

Môj prvý Lemire. Zhrniem to:
2. Kresba a scenár pôsobia absolútne neoddeliteľne
3. Kvôli miere surovosti (či už fyzickej alebo emočnej) je to miestami extrémne náročné čítanie

Çok severek okuduğum bir çizgi romandı. Serinin ilk iki cildinden oluşmasına ve kalın olmasına rağmen oldukça akıcıydı. Ele alınan hikaye de bence çok orijinal. Gus’ün yaşadıklarını okumak duygusal ve aynı zamanda merak uyandırıcıydı. Seriye mutlaka devam edeceğim.

Holy moly, this is so good I flew right through it, and can’t wait to read the rest. I get why the art turns some people off, but it didn’t really bother me, especially if I focused more on the larger images than the details. The layouts are used perfectly and the art drove powerful emotional beats.

This has been on my to-read pile since 2012... Seems now is as good a time to read it as any.

Jeff Lemire is rapidly becoming one of my favorite comic book writers. Sweet Tooth, in the forward to this deluxe edition, gets compared to The Gunslinger and The Road. Those two comparisons should give you a wonderful idea of just what you are in for when you crack open this book. The grizzled Old Man and the young innocent set off through a post-apocalyptic landscape in search of a place that may or may not exist. What choices get made? Well, the comparisons should tip you off to some of that tragedy. You're in for a difficult time.

A plague has wiped out humanity, and is rapidly destroying the remaining bits of them. The only people immune to it are... well... are they really people? They're hybrids between humans and animals and our main character, the nine year old Gus, is a deer/human hybrid with a sweet tooth. The first issue sees him leave his forested safe-home with the Big Man to go to the Preserve. The supposed Preserve.

This first volume is gorgeous, and I can't wait to read more. I think over time my rating of it will get higher as I've had difficulty getting it out of my head. The art style isn't quite to my taste, but the book? Man. There's something about the story that is a bit like a fishhook in my mind. It's hitting onto some true archetypal stuff.

It’s a very popular literary motif: grizzled old warrior is forced to be a protector of an innocent child, one that seems to be some portent. Kazuo Koike’s beloved manga Lone Wolf and Cub is, perhaps, the best known works to utilize it, although it is a motif that shows up in many genres, from Cormac McCarthy’s novel “The Road” to the Disney+TV show “The Mandalorian”.

Jeff Lemire’s popular graphic novel series “Sweet Tooth” continues the motif in a depressing post-apocalyptic story about a hybrid child (part-human, part-animal) growing up in a world in which humanity is dying from a global pandemic. Hybrid children—-all born after the pandemic hit—-are being hunted down to be experimented on by scientists, as hybrids are believed to be a potential source for a cure.

Gus looks like a normal human child, except for the antlers and doe-like ears. He has been living with his father in a cabin in the woods, but months ago, his father died. A man named Jeppard saves Gus’s life from two hunters. Reluctantly, Jeppard takes the kid with him, and neither of their lives will, of course, ever be the same.

While I’m not a fan of the artwork (Lemire illustrated as well as wrote this), the story hooked me from the beginning. How could it not? Clearly, this kid has an important purpose in life. Just like all the other kids in those other stories. You need to know what happens to him, right? That’s why stories like this are so popular, and that’s why this motif can be found in so many of the beloved stories we grew up reading: “Great Expectations”, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, “The Lord of the Rings”. Movies like “Star Wars”, “Logan”, “News of the World”.

Joseph Campbell called this an “archetype”. It is part of what he called “the hero’s journey”. It is something that we are all attuned to in our DNA, and it is why we love stories like “Sweet Tooth”.

I went into this graphic novel series knowing nothing about the story, other than there has been a recent Netflix adaptation of the story. Thinking it would be a fun and dark read for Halloween, I am so pleasantly surprised with this story so far. I am so glad I picked this up! The plot is dark and macabre, and the artwork adds a fantastic feel to the post-apocalyptic setting. Set after a devastating pandemic (which is frighteningly topical), a very sheltered young boy named Gus must venture outside of his safe home and forest. The truth about the world and his life is not quite what he has been led to believe, however. Covering themes of religious belief, science, ethics, and humanity, I absolutely loved this graphic novel. Lemire's characters are well developed and I came to care about all of them. This is the deluxe edition, which contains serials 1-12 of the Sweet Tooth series. I absolutely cannot wait to dive into the rest of the series!
