Andrew Hussie is the creator of MS Paint Adventures, a collection of webcomics that includes Homestuck, as well as of several other webcomics, books, and videos.
astoundingly fantastic tour-de-force. as many fans and critics have said before, andrew hussie truly abandoned multiple dramatic plot threads at the tail end of his story and had his characters just kind of talk about their feelings ... and it WORKS.
this entire act is setting the stage for the ultimate conclusion: COLLIDE. before the action-filled ending, we have an emotional climax. dave and dirk have perhaps my favorite interaction in the entire comic, neatly tying dave's character arc into the nicest bow i have ever seen. the contrast of dave being terrified to meet bro vs dirk being so excited to meet dave... is so heartbreaking. the scene where dave hugs dirk, ultimately concluding that this man who is so terrified of being evil could never be the ontologically evil man his older brother turned into?? im already crying.
kanaya was hilarious but knocking karkat out was so sad ! his epic speech ultimately being "oh man i hope dave is okay..." im crying again even harder
TEREZI: REMEM8ER!! a flash animation i dont think ive ever TRULY understood until this moment. terezi remembers every single terezi's life and character development, and we get a resolution to all of the characters lost throughout the story's many timelines. do you remem8er me is a beautiful song on top of it all!
sure i love the plot relevant stuff. i wish they had resolved a huge number of plot lines. i do always wish there was more of a distinct tie between lore and character such as in act five act two. but ultimately, as our final goodbye to these characters, act six act six intermission five quietly demonstrates how much everyone has changed, mostly for the better, throughout the story.
and with this (wordcount = 88k) plus the two ending animations, I have finished all of Homestuck! Really love how the whole series wraps up like "forget about half of those ongoing plot threads, they don't matter, what you guys really want is lots of very long conversations about feelings right?" and I said yes thank you. so maybe the final Dave & Dirk conversation made me cry, AND WHAT OF IT
Ugh, so close to the end. This volume largely focuses on the different "homecomings" and final meetings of characters that need to sort out all their family drama. Then the stage is set for the final four fights. Also, Vriska is back and as a team leader is just kicking ass.
Something feels deeply off to me about the fact that most of the characters in this Act come from a completely different timeline than the one we have been following so far. I get that this is the time to stop and take a breath, to review what has happened in the game and assess everything: the good, the bad, the failures, the quests. However, I cannot shake the feeling that... I don't know these guys, and I don't get their motivations.
For instance, Karkat's sudden disinterest with his role as a leader is particularly jarring. Apparently he has had the time to accept that he failed, fully relinquishing power to Vriska in the process. Ok, but... Last time we saw him, Karkat was still trying to help Terezi however he could. His constant as a character is that he deeply cares about proving his worth. How is this Karkat he suddenly so ok with a secondary role? What happened to him?? Just saying "he changed" does not clarify anything for the reader who thought to know Karkat as he is/was.
Rose is another mixed bag. Her drinking problems in the meteorite had a very concrete reason. The sudden disappearance of her addiction because of Vriska's presence is a quite unsatisfactory explanation. One would imagine that she had to undergo a deep internal transformation to overcome her addiction, but we don't get to see any of it. Yet another profound and rather sudden change in a character's personality that we are supposed to just accept.
Frankly, it feels as if the author was trying to close story arcs left and right before the big battle. They all talk at length about how much they've changed without us actually seeing any reasons why these changes happened. I'm just saying, some of this characters feel as rewritten versions of themselves, and we audience are quite disconnected from their new versions.
Alive Vriska is the worst. I hated that the narration constantly vindicates her by rewarding her with a big confrontation with the ultimate boss which she didn't deserve. Dead Vriska's character arch was so much more interesting, and it was deeply insulting that once again, Alive Vriska got to be the MC by yelling and berating her Dead version. Indeed, worst character ever.
Terezi: Remem8er the best thing of this Act. Also, Dave and Dirk's conversations. Beautifully honest and deeply touching moments, both of them.
