Loch Powers was the hottest guy I’d ever seen in my entire life. And I hated him with every fiber of my being. I'd practically known him since birth. Heck, we’d literally shared a crib as babies at his mom’s daycare. Then I’d crushed on him hard when we hit middle school but he wouldn’t give geeky, glasses-wearing me the time of day. When his mom made him take me to the sixth grade dance, he’d humiliated me and I vowed to never talk to him again. The next year when my family moved away, I told myself that if I never saw him again it’d be too soon. Now I’m back and attending the same college, but I’m no longer the skinny, ugly girl who was so infatuated with him. And I’m so over him it’s not even funny. But now that I’m no longer the ugly duckling, he’s set his sights on me, and I’m just not sure what to do with that.

The whole "I hate you but you're so hot" thing Simone has going on with Loch pretty much throughout the whole book got tiresome fast. Didn't like either the hero or heroine and although I got to the end, I spent the majority of the book skimming and making sarcastic notes throughout it. Both of them come across as incredibly immature it was annoying! Maybe if Simone had some self-respect it would have been better. I enjoyed the first book in this series but this one was a huge let down.
☆ I received an ARC via Southern Belle Promotions in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! ☆
A story of first love. Forgiveness. Second Chances. && Lots and Lots of Sexual tension that will ignite and incinerate your panties.
I loved Loch!! Though, I wished that the character, Loch, himself, had more depth, character development, and more presence period. Quite frankly, I always just found him secondary and pushed to the back of what I felt he could have been. But that’s just me.
As for Simone St. John, this was really her story, and her story alone, of coming to terms of her past and her own insecurities of her blundered childhood crush on then male bestie, Loch Powers.
Now several years later, and all grown up and no longer the ugly duckling she once was, Simone and Loch cross roads again, but this time he doesn’t recognize her…but she definitely recognizes him!
Ah, how the tides have changed to give her to exact revenge on the cruelty and broken heart he left on her with a new image and a different name.
Still mortified and humiliated from the cruel words and battered heart he left on her, Simone leads Loch on initially, but decides to back out on her plan of vindication, after realizes the faults in her scheme and that she still carries harbors feelings for her sex on a stick, tatted enemy.
But, Loch isn’t having it! With girls lining up to be in his bed, Loch senses something different in ‘Celeste,’ the pen name that Simone gives him at first, and pursues her at all costs with ‘no’ not an option. She’s exquisitely beautiful and doesn’t jump through hoops and obstacles to get his attention.
But, how will he react when he learns of “Celeste’s” secret and her fledgling intentions towards him? Not to mention, that she has been in love with him since they were kids? Will he return her sentiments? Or will her turn her away forever?
A definite improvement in the series. I really enjoyed Gable, which is how I got into The Powers that Be books, Zeke was just okay in my opinion, but Loch was a step up. I just wish we got more into the psyche of Loch a tad bit extra and didn’t only just primarily focus upon Simone, her demons and heartache; not to mention, her having mixed signals over Loch and his hot and coldness.
Anyway, can’t wait for Ryker’s book, which I hope is up next!!
No nope nope! I continued with this out of curiosity and i wish i never bothered. The authors writing is terrible the heroine sounds childish and Loch was just as bad. The storyline is based around a revenge plot over something that happened when they were kids so it automatically screamed childish to me. Dont waste your money on this one
Simone St. John has returned to her hometown of Seattle...the scene of intense mortification in sixth grade by her teen crush Lochlan Powers. He used to be her childhood friend, but for years she has hated what he did to her and in turn hated even the idea of him.
And as they now both attend Hallervan College, she finds that the cocky jerk from middle school is now a way-too-hot, charismatic, flirty man.
Loch seems sweet, attentive, fun, and is completely desirable and flirtacious. But she finds it hard to forget the mean boy he used to be and to believe in his sincerity. She is still a bit of a geek under her new glamour, but is also still insecure and carries the scars of feeling unwanted and made fun of. Together they have a spark and sexual tension. And he seems intent on pursuing the woman she has become. Her best friend Marcy convinces her that a little payback can't hurt.
Soon Simone finds herself in a mess of her own making and unsure about what to do about it. The right words aren't spoken and sometimes the wrong ones are. It is hard to tell what to believe and to handle her new found guilt. As the lies come out, the situation just continues to unravel further. These are two people that are volatile together. They fight, make quick judgments, retreat, and start the process over again. They make each other suffer for their mistakes at times. If they have a chance at all they will have to learn forgiveness and trust.
This was a quick, light, fun read. I would have liked a bit more depth and exploration into some parts. The pacing was pretty fast and some of the resolutions happened quickly. I liked the characters especially Loch. He is another hot, bossy, snarky, magnetic and sometimes infuriating Powers brother who knows what he wants when he sees it. But there were some things about him that showed his inner heart and regrets.
It was told in Simone's point of view (except the epilogue) and she could get on my nerves at times. I found myself wanting to tell her not to be a chicken and open her mouth to communicate, and then alternately would be wanting to chill her out when she was overreacting and yelling at him. Sometimes they acted immature and had poor communication. There were a few plot things that left me wondering or frustrated me, but overall it was a cute, sweet, and easy read with enough back and forth to be a tennis game.
Eventually they will have to learn if what they are fighting about or what they should be fighting for is more important. And see what is left after the dust settles. This can be read as a stand alone. The other brothers from previous books are mentioned, but there is nothing that requires you to read their stories first. But after this one, I definitely want to see more with Ryker Powers...the intense, sometimes grouchy and sometimes sweet wrestler who already seems to have his hands full. Ryker will be the fourth book in the series.
Yep, yet another great book that Harper has written. Still love MY Gable the most (Yeh you heard that right, he is mine) but those other powers boys are inching into my heart with each book. Loch and Simones story is just that. It doesn't have Zekes or Gables 'next' part of their story in it so its just Lochs! I'm not a reviewer who goes on and blah blah blahs about every little thing in the book. I'm just me, a reader who loved this book. Loved it so much that I didn't want it to end. But knowing that after this book finished, that the next book will be getting started or may have already been started. I for one, cannot wait. One click now, it's totally worth it.
This author doesn't seem to be a hit with me. It's always the self-righteous, cocky guys and pathetic girls who don't know how to stand up for themselves. I don't understand why Simone went along with that childish revenge scheme in the first place when that was nothing like her personality. She was traumatized and shy, she didn't have it in her to do something like that. Simone was mature on her own, but easily influenced by people around her. She needs better friends and more support.
Loch, I don't care if he's changed and became a better person after what he did to her or matured after high school. It doesn't excuse what he did and everyone passed off his behavior as that he was young and isn't a reflection of the person he is today. He was that person not too long ago and for people to just dismiss what he did to her was beyond f*cked up and hypocritical. I hate the way this author was telling this story so I had to start skimming because of how frustrated I got with all the back and forth between these two. There's too much hurt and miscommunication. I'll never believe that they live happily in the future because one is always hurting the other and jumping to conclusions. He also got off on playing mind games with her. She should have just been honest in the first place, true. But the whole reason she was even playing him was because of what he did to her and because she thought he hadn't changed and was still hurting people, which is not a horrible thing. She just wanted him to realize how it feels to be hurt so he wouldn't do it to others anymore. By the time she realized he wasn't like that anymore, it was already too late. I don't blame her for anything other than she should have just told him who she was, to fuck off, and move on. She could do better than him and he didn't deserve her.
Her characters just suck. I get that you want to throw in some drama to make the story exciting but sometimes too much drama takes away any enjoyment the book has to offer. This is one of those books. Loch didn't really apologize and show true remorse for how he'd treated her when they were younger, that was conveniently forgotten because his pain was more important and fresh. He didn't take any responsibility for how he was as a kid. A d*mn tattoo means sh*t if you made no effort to find the person you loved and hurt to tell them you were sorry. Loch's assumption that Simone grew up to be a psycho b*tch who would hunt him down for revenge is just more proof of how immature he still is and tack on the author's part. No one would actually think that in real life, in fact they'd probably assume they came out much stronger, determined to succeed, and a lesson learned or so hurt that they find it hard to open up to anyone and keep to themselves. One more book to go and I will never touch anything by this author ever again. She and I have a very different idea of what romance is supposed to be like. This isn't it, none of these boys (not men) in her books are.
I’m not even going to complain on the lack of edits this time. Apparently they have been done and new versions are up (so I’m told) but not on Amazon. How you can publish an unfinished product (because that’s what a first(?) draft is) is just incomprehensible to me. You’re asking for money for something that’s not whole. Its like trying to sell a broken TV. And people wonder why a lot of readers avoid self-published books.
The couple is the worst I have ever read. She’s immature, cowardly, refuses to own up to her mistakes and have mood swings the size of…something huge. He just smirks and bosses her around and I don’t see why they should be together.
She lies about who she is and plans to get revenge for something that happened almost TEN years ago, something that their moms had a big part in, but let’s forget that. The characters have no depth whatsoever. Their story isn’t believable. The way they talk doesn’t make sense. All she does is judge and generalize, blame others for her wrongdoings. She goes back and forward in thinking she was right versus wrong in her actions, and on top of that the author is trying to sell me on that he has loved her all his life. Just no
She makes references that doesn’t hold, and sees compliments where there are only insults.
If I hadn’t paid for it, I would never have finished it. You’re supposed to get better at what you do, so how come these books only get worse?
I mean really, what can I say about Harper Bentley that I have not already said. I sing her praises daily!
Loch is book 3 in her Powers That Be series, and if you have yet to read Gable and Zeke, I suggest you do although this book is a stand alone.
Loch is the youngest of 4 brothers, so we have one brother left and I for one, cannot wait for Ryker's story.
What I liked about this book, is the story. It's a story of second chance love between Loch and Simone. Loch, as a young tween, had some very prickish tendencies which of course, he didn't realize until after Simone had moved. I loved Loch's personality, when we got to see it. I loved the chemistry between the two.
What I would have loved more of is more from Loch's POV. I did not feel that we got enough of him, and I think that we could all agree that more Loch is not a bad thing.
I still loved the story, and it was a super quick, light and easy read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review from Southern Belle
Loch and Simone were childhood friends who drifted apart as they got older. He became cooler and she became nerdier. When they were 12, Loch completed humiliated Simone. Her family moved away shortly after but the trauma affected her for many years to come. Simone loved him as a child and ended up hating him.
All grown up, Simone is back in town to attend college. Loch comes on to her on her first day, not realising who she is. His ignorance of her identity prompts a sweet plan for revenge against Loch for all the wrongs he committed as a kid. However, Simone finds herself falling for him again and unable to carry out her plan, but unfortunately she finds herself getting in deeper with him, and unable to tell him who she really is.
For me, this story was probably the simplest of the series but I enjoyed it, nonetheless. It was about love, trust, remorse, and how events in a person’s life can change them. I liked Loch’s desire for her, Simone’s feistiness, and loved her co-workers, Vegas and Dakota. Great read!
I waffled back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. But, here is why I tipped towards 4: 1. I liked Simone. I thought she was relatable. And I love a female character who is going to college for something as bad ass as engineering. Smart, nerdy girls are the bomb! 2. I love that Loch had regrets. I think that is really powerful. 3. The story is pretty short and can be easily in one sitting. The plot moves along well and the characters are likable. Overal, it was an enjoyable story. Did I love it? No, but it was still good. I would continue to read books by Harper Bentley because I liked her writing style, enjoyed the story, and even if it was a little hackneyed, I still felt it was enjoyable. So, kudos for that! I wish you got Loch's POV though. Would have been nice to know what was going through his head.
Overly emotional. Simone that poor girl!! She was embarrassed by her childhood crush Loch and when she goes to the college when she's older she has a few classes with him. Not only do these two battle each other even tho they clearly have feelings they are so stubborn. Now Loch he is as stubborn as they come. He learned that Simone is the one who got away. THIS IS A MUST READ!!!! Really can not wait for the next book
~~~~~~~~~~Val's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
This book was my favorite of the series. I would have loved it if the author would have been more in depth with the characters but it was a short, quick read that held my attention the whole way through. The situations and characters were very relate-able and the story flowed well.
Simone St. John has returned to Seattle, it has been years since she has been back but she wants the chance to have a typically college life as well as be with her best friend who she has missed. The one thing she doesn't want is to run into Loch Powers. Loch had been a friend up until middle school when he acted unforgivably and Simone still has nightmares about it.
When Loch sees the new beauty on campus, he doesn't realize it is Simone. Simone takes her best friends advice about a revenge opportunity only to have it blow up in her face. Loch wants Simone, Simone wants Loch but can they get on the same page about what they want?
I think this would have benefited from being a bit longer and more developed. Had bright spots but it seemed like some of Loch and Simone just didn't mesh right. Fun read for a spring day.
MUST READ 1 person POV story as much as I was really hoping this was going to be a 2 person POV just to be in Loch's head when he found out certain things ( yea see I'm not going to give any spoilers out) would have been amazing. full of hurt, lies, love and truths, this story wraps you up and spits you out once it's finished, as it does seem short once you get reading it, of course then you can't help but not put the story down for anything.
Gable is still my all time favorite Powers brother, but Loch was not to bad. I really liked this book. A quick, happy and light read. Harper Bentley is a star!
It was an alright book. I felt like I've read the same storyline a thousand times. Plus I'm not really into young(high school/uni) characters. Thus, the 2 stars. :)
Let's see.. A spitting image of Ryker (not that I know how Ryker looks like) A jerk like Gable. Nonetheless a gentleman as Zeke. Well people, that's how our Power brothers exactly like.
I think these books are so easy to read no massive dramas like some books some people loved these books some don't but read for yourself and make a judgement :-)
Classic New Adult romance problem--writer doesn't seem interested in understanding men as people. Loch, that is, is a persona, not a person, and a straightforward stereotype ripped lazily from the alpha genre. A question that could be interesting--what drove Loch to be almost sociopathically cruel as a young person, and how did he come to see the light--gets no attention despite being one of two driving forces of the plot. The other driving force--the heroine's plan for vengeance that she never fully commits to nor enacts--is, to say the least, anti-climactic. The rest of the book is just a whole bunch of not-cheating and not-explaining and not-doing. Like the author is afraid if one of her characters does something regrettable or even interesting, we won't forgive her.
I don't mind stream-of-conscious internal monologues and overuse of the word "babe"--I've read just about every Kristen Ashley book that there is--but I suspect this author would be a lot better if her books stewed a bit longer before she served them up. It all felt slapdash, underwritten, and under-realized.
I have read the first two books in this series & loved them, so I was excited to read this one. I was not disappointed! I loved being back in this world (you do not need to read the first two books, but I would recommend it because they set up the world & are good), & Harper’s writing kept me reading in one sitting until I finished. I loved Loch, because he is so sweet & sexy. Simone’s push/pull personality had me a little frustrated at times hence the 4 stars, yet at other times I completely understood her. Overall, loved this book!
I didn't really care for these two. I found Simone to be annoying and the connection wasn't really there. The story was mostly about Simone and how bad she felt about what she was doing or acting, but then acting the same at every scenario. And there was actually very little interactions between the couple except for 3 sexy times. When did they have a chance to get to know each other? This was not anywhere as good as the other two in the series. Hope Ryker is better.
