A beautiful book possessing a depth and clarity which are all too rare in linguistic anthropology. Builds upon many of the ideas Sherzer worked on over the course of his career, such as his discourse centered approach, vindication of the study of humor, and fine grained attention to issues of translation. An interesting reading in the context of the literary turn and "crisis of anthropology" then current in 1990.
