There's a new hero in town and his name is Senator Drake Prescott - and he's everything a girl could ever want. He's just about as perfect as one can be - including honest and nice. Next to sports-related romances, I really like a good political themed romance, too. This one didn't have too much of the political mud to wade through though. The relationship between the Senator and the school teacher that he meets while visiting her History class, takes the upper hand and never backs off. Lucy and Drake are both characters that you'll want to wrap your heart around and cheer them on as secrets and lies invade their little slice of heaven on earth.

This is spicy and fun to read from start to finish and also introduces some very intriguing and well-deserving secondary characters who should definitely get their own stories in future books in this new series.

First I need to say, I was the first person to have the pleasure of meeting Senator Drake Prescott, and it's a good thing I claimed him before anyone else. I devoured this book, and often threatened the author for more as I beta read every page the moment it was sent to my Kindle. From first page to the last page, I loved every word that brought us Drake and Lucy's story. The best laid out plans mean nothing once fate decides to step in. Drake and Lucy discover this first hand. Loved this book, and can't wait to read more on the Prescotts. #DrakeisMINE #ThePowerofaRedBra

3.5 stars!! I have been reading a fair few political based romances recently and my need for naughty senators is increasing by the day. I initially saw the next book in this series advertised and when I saw that this one was political I had to dive in.

I will say that this was more romance/drama than politics, while Drake is a politician this book only really skirts on his work and focuses more on his relationships. He was adorable, he was perfect and you couldn't help but fall in love with him.

Lucy was a fantastic character that will wheedle her way into your heart and stay there. This book had plenty of twists and turns and will keep you thoroughly entertained.

The Prescotts are a wonderful family and I cannot wait to read more about them.

This book had a lot of potential. But it fell short in keeping my interest. This book is about a over achiever senator falling for a teacher during his visit for a classroom Q and A. The teacher was to mousy and not enough drive. The senator who also is suppose to be driven was weak at times. I had to take breaks for this one.

Rich businessmen, drummers, journalists, and now politicians, is there anything this author can write about that's not simply awesome? That would be a resounding NO! LOVED LOVED LOVED Incumbent!

Lucy Washburn has been living with secrets and lies for a long time. And it's not that she wants to, she's just learned from her nightmare past, so she starts over from scratch, far from home. Her life is finally smooth when she meets the man who will change her life. Drake Prescott has a dream of becoming the President of the United States. He's seeking his reelection on the journey to the White House when he meets Lucy. Drake is single by choice without being a playboy, but there's something about Lucy that he can't get her out of his head. Lucy feels the same connection, but will she be able to trust him enough to spill her secrets without damaging his career?

WOW! I couldn't get enough of this story. The character development is fantastic, with all of them very easy to love. A well written, intense, original storyline flows perfectly. I loved Lucy and Drake's chemistry, and they were hot in the sexy scenes. Joanne Schwehm did an amazing job hooking me cover to cover, and keeping my heart racing the whole time. I CANNOT WAIT to read more of this series! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Seeing it was about a politician I thought it would be about a slime ball man whore changed by love but I was WRONG!!!
Drake Prescott is not your typical politician he is strong, smart, caring and honest. Drake is also completely devoted to his family and his country. He is just the perfect man!!
Lucy Washburn is a quite, sweet school teacher and her best friend Mason is the only family she has. But Lucy has a secret in her past that she is ashamed of and no one can know it! Being involved with a man that is constantly in the spotlight is not something she wants to deal with. It could be bad for both of them if the secret comes out.
I just totally fell in love with this couple!! It warmed my heart to see a man with such patience and gentlemanly ways. His family welcomed her as their own immediately. When push comes to shove and secrets are revealed they rally around her and show her a love she has never known!
I am excited to see this is the start of a series a few of the Prescott siblings have me curious and I definitely want to know more.

This was with out a doubt one of the best books I have ever read.
While I read it, I got pissed, laughed. cried..I may have even yelled at my poor kindle. Lucy Washburn really is an amazing woman. I found that she's a character that I could be friends with in real life. What I really loved with all the crap that her parents put her through she came out on the other end an better person and brave as hell
Drake Prescott is incredible! Yes he's a senator, but he was a clean senator. He made me realize that there are good politicians out there even if they are only in books. But my favorite part was that Drake wouldn't let what happened in Lucy's past mess with their future.
The other thing I loved was how such a taboo subject such as abortion was handled in this story. Drake himself is Pro life he was brought up to believe that this is the right thing. But yet he would never hold it against someone if they were pro choice

The story started off interesting enough but after Lucy's 'secret' was revealed the book was pretty much dead to me after that. It probably comes down to your personal views but this definitely wasn't the book (or author) for me.

I have been counting down the days to this release since I saw the first teaser. Joanne Schwehm had me completely enthralled in this fast-paced and different love story. My emotions ranged from happiness to heartache to anger and back to happiness with the surprises Incumbent had.

I really liked how different Lucy and Drake were. I haven't read characters like them before. Lucy is shy and reserved. She keeps to herself and only has one friend, Mason. Drake is the guy dreams are made of. He is incredibly intelligent, sexy, a family man, has a killer body and heart of gold. When these two meet it was as if the world stopped and was thrown back on its axis. There was something about the other that just drew them in. I think my favorite thing about them was that they were nerds and embraced it fully. If it wasn't reading an actual newspaper it was the love for history, learning and teaching. At their core was someone who wanted to help shape and better the lives of those around them. For Lucy it was through her teaching. For Drake it was through policy change with his seat in the Senate. I loved the relationship between Drake and Lucy. It was light and easy and they both got to be themselves. They were able to relax, let their guard down and just be.

But with Drake being in the public eye and his every move scrutinized they have to be very careful. This is the one thing that makes Lucy nervous because she has a past that she ran from that could come back to bite him. When what all happened was revealed, my heart broke for Lucy. And then I got angry that it happened to her. While Drake's reaction was to be expected, Lucy's wasn't. I didn't think she would handle things the way she did. But when the events of her troubled past come to light, it is Drake and the entire Prescott family to the rescue. Drake is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the woman he loves. His actions made me fall for him even more than I already had. More so, however, it was how Lucy stepped up that me smiling from ear to ear. This woman is spectacular. Its no wonder Drake was so in love with her.

I LOVED the Prescott clan. Everyone from the baby sister, Gretchen to the budding pro athlete, Dane played some sort of role in the development of Lucy and Drake's relationship. And I can't forget Mason, Lucy's best friend. We all need someone like him in our lives. Someone who loves you unconditionally and isn't afraid to tell you when they think you're making a mistake. Someone who will be there for you at the drop of a hat, even when they think you're wrong. Joanne Schwehm delivered BIG time with Incumbent. Not only was it a great story of overcoming loss, starting over and finding yourself and love; but it was a great set up for what is sure to be an amazing series.

I read this quite a while ago and haven't had time to review it. Apologies this is going to be quick.

Incumbent while being a fantastic and steamy romance is also very thought provoking. I don't know a lot about American politics but State Senators appear to be the rock stars of the political world, and Drake Prescott may as well be the shining star of all. Not only that but Drake actually cares and wants to make a positive difference to people's lives. He is singularly driven to bring about positive change via the government system he believes in whole heartedly. Relationships need to be squeaky clean to survive the intrusive nature and judgement of the media and public. To this point I always get a little confused, people are human after all and as humans we make mistakes, some mistakes cost more than others and have repercussions as the plot shows clearly.

Lucy had her life shattered by those closest to her at a young age, keeping the details close to her heart, she carries the burden with her daily. Lucy tends to keep people at a distance due to the emotional barriers she has created stemming for the traumatic incident in her past. An incident not of her choosing, an incident that left her heart-broken and her relationship with her parents in tatters, an incident she carries in her heart daily. Let me tell you this tore me apart, it was told with such raw emotion I felt such empathy for Lucy, I wanted to climb into the story and hug her. However, this is the type of incident that could be detrimental to Drake's re-election even though it was a long time ago and had nothing to do with him, apparently it goes to show moral fortitude - yeah my thoughts on that WTH.

It's a very emotional situation exasperated by political stances and media perception. All I wanted was for true love to win the day ♥ To find out you need to read Incumbent ;)

My early thoughts about Incumbent were not wrong. This book was wonderful. Drake is this honest, intelligent, passionate man who happens to be a politician. Lucy is a teacher who went into teaching for all the right reasons! These are 2 honorable people in a world that loves to tear you down. Their story felt real to me and I wasn't expecting that. I also wasn't expecting the tears but this book did make me cry a little. The other Prescott siblings are amazing as well and I cannot wait for their books! (I totally think Gretchen and Mason will get together!). Joanne Schwehm has managed to write a beautiful book about a world that isn't always beautiful. While you do get to see the ugly side of politics the book was still different from what I expected. You figure out early on what will most likely happen, and even seeing it coming, I was still surprised by a few things.

POV: Dual (in my opinion, the BEST POV is dual)
Tears: a few but not in a super sad way
Trope: Politician, girl on the run
Heat: 2

So the blurb was interesting - Politics and teaching.

Drake Prescott presidential incumbent - the guy who has it all. Personality, looks, scholar and a determination to make his dreams come true - until he met Her.

Lucy Washburn teacher of political history. Her life was in the place she wanted it to be. Her secrets were buried and she had moved on from the "mistakes" of her past until she invited HIM into her classroom to answer questions on political history.

Instant attraction and they fell in love.

This book was a very slow read and I didn't get much connection between the two characters. It was too "politically correct and polite" I also got a bit fed up with the over use of the word cute to describe what she wore etc,.

When her secret was revealed and resulted in some really stupid decisions being made (decisions that would not apply in the 21st century) I almost gave up. I continued to the end but this book was not for me.

“So, it’s Drake, is it?” He gave me a bemused smile. “You’re on a first-name basis with the senator. What aren’t you telling me, Ms. Washburn?” He pursed his lips, his laugh lines deepening around his eyes as he waited for me to reply.

השר יעני ממש חמוד, ומצטייר כפוליטיקאי מקסים ביותר

“Do me a favor and don’t dig into Ms. Washburn’s past. I want to find out about her on my own.” His lips formed a tight line. “I advise against that, Drake.”

מתחיל פה קצת בעיות 🙄

“Look, this is what I know. Public figures are scrutinized for everything they say and do, and so are the people around them. If we’re together, then my problems become your problems, and you don’t need that. You’re seeking reelection, and you’re the best senator this state has produced in decades. Not to mention you want the presidency one day. It’s too much responsibility. I can’t risk that.

“So you waited until I fell in love with you to tell me you aren’t who you said you were?” I was stunned. He loves me?

אני כמעט חטפתי מיגרנה מכמות גילגולי העיניים היו לי בזמן קריאת היצירה הזו!

ויש לזה עוד המשך 😩

Had to tap out at 21% because of gems like:

- Mentions Romeo & Juliet as one example of ill-fated lovers in history

- The presumption that sultry looks a couple in a bar are giving each other equals an affair

- "His eyes read like a romantic suspense novel, drawing you in and giving you enough angst to grip your heart."

- A lack of knowledge regarding basic high school physics

- And finally, he's running for political office and she mentions that anyone he gets involved with will have their background checked and mud slung at them, and he completely ignores her concerns/hints/warnings

I don't know who supposedly edited this book, but if I were Schwehm I'd ask for my money back. This was exceedingly bad.

Incumbent is a story about politics, romance, and the importance of family. Told in dual POV between Lucy and Drake. The story and characters flowed nicely.

Lucy Washburn is a high school history teacher, who left her past behind her and escaped to West Virginia to start over. She's a smart, funny, caring, beautiful woman who has skeletons in her past and doesn't want them ever to come out. It could potently destroy her reputation as a well respected teacher in the community.
Lucy has a big interest in politics and wants to share that passion with her students, she invites Senator Drake Prescott to come to her class to visit and talk with the students. What she never expected to happen was to become very interested in him. The Senator is a very high profile politician and completely out her league.

Drake Prescott is a US Senator gearing up to keep his seat in the Senate. He's extremely dedicated to his country and family, work is his life never one to form a romantic relationship. Constantly in the public eye he wants the attention to be on his views for a better country, not his private life.
He decides to accept the invitation from Lucy and talk to her high school students. He expected to walk in and answer questions from the students and discuss his time in the Senate seat. What Drake never expected was to be smitten with the teacher.

The two form a friendship and slowly it builds into more, Lucy is over the moon that a man like Drake would be interested in her, Lucy fears that her secrets could come out and become damaging to not only herself but Drake, Drake's opponents are lurking in the shadows just waiting for something big on the good ole Senator Prescott. Could Lucy's past just be it? Is there relationship strong enough to handle if her secrets are exposed?

Lucy has her best friend Mason who offers her support throughout the story, her true confidence. Drake has his extremely loving over bearing family has his support. I'm sensing one of the other Prescott siblings is next up for their own story.
I definitely would recommended this book if your looking forward to reading about a sexy, sweet, honest politician.

"You're a great man, a selfless man, and we need more men like you. You're a leader. Don't follow the path of those who need to hurt others to gain what they want. Lead the way your parents taught you by example. Be strong for those who are weak. Be you. "

I love a good naughty, sexy political escapade; the level of power and seduction and secretivity that comes with someone high ranking and the intrigue involved with sneaking around. With Incumbent however, what we get is much more romantic and sweet than raunchy and lewd but it still manages to grasp your attention and deliver a very good and insightful storyline and what helps this along is some sterling characterisation in the form of both the handsome, charismatic United States Senator Drake and the shy, secretive school teacher Lucy.

Drake comes across as very confident without being annoying and arrogant, he finds something very alluring in Lucy and indeed discovers his inner alpha as he determines that he needs her and she belongs to him, but as he so eloquently puts it, not as his possession but as his girl. Lucy is highly intelligent and a bit of a history and political buff but that isn’t all there is to the heroine. We find out just how broken but resilient she is on the inside, caring but wary and hopeful too. Drake has the power and social standing so it’s with trepidation that Lucy begins a beautiful and captivating love affair with him and as she has a few secrets in her past the could derail any chance Drake has at the presidency, Incumbent delivers on suspense and drama as well as romance and sensuality.

‘“Let me be the one,” I said softly.
With narrowed eyes, she leaned her head back to study me. “The one to do what?”
“The one who makes your heart beat harder. The one who makes you smile as if you don’t have a care in the world.”’

Mason, Lucy’s best friend offers some good support throughout the story as does Drake’s extensive and invasive but loving family, of who I’m sure we’ll see plenty of throughout this series. Incumbent was a lovely read that could have benefitted from a bigger build up in sexual chemistry between the two protagonists but over all it was well written and I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series and discovering which striking brother of Drake’s will be next to fall in love.

"Life is nothing more that a series of choices, and I've learned the hard way that the decisions we make can impact not only our lives, but the lives of others."

Drake Prescott has earned my vote! From the first page to the last, Senator Prescott captured me with his honor, character, and the forthright manner in which he not only ran his campaign, but also his heart. A true family man grounded in the ideals of his country, Drake Prescott is the perfect man to lead this country. But when Lucy Washburn, a social studies teacher, captures his heart, he must determine if following his heart is more important than the dream he has held.

And Lucy? Well, she is a teacher who found her way into the profession in order to make a difference. When Senator Prescott enters her classroom as a guest speaker, the attraction to one another is immediate, and Lucy is shocked to be asked out on a date. However, Lucy's past if full of secrets that could prove to be detrimental not only Prescott's campaign, but could also ultimately affect her standing in the life and the career she has built. How can she share herself with him when she has worked so hard to build a life away from her past? Will the two ever be able to build something together? Or is the campaign trail and the dirty campaigning more than the two can take? Will the choices of her past impact the future of Drake's?

Joanne Schwehm has given readers a heartfelt political read that will have your swooning over Drake and wishing that all politicians were as honest and forthright as he. Told in a dual POV, Schwehm will also take you on an emotional ride full of laughter, heartache, passion, and sacrifice full of well-developed and strong characters. A great read! Here is to the next installment with more of the Prescott family!
~Cheers!

Politics, mystery and romance? I'm intrigued, to say the least.

With a soft and honest writing style, the story flows effortlessly in double POV between Lucy and Drake. The relationship started off as a sweet crush. A teacher and a senator might seem mismatched but it fueled my appetite for fairytale romance. And that's exactly what this is.

They're both smart, while Drake is driven and respectful, she's kind and devoted. However, there's more brewing under the pretty surface.

The double prologue was really good and set up an atmosphere of foreboding. Lucy's got secrets! And you know how those work for a politician's career.

What you can expect from this romance is a traditional, low-simmering courtship. It's gentle as well as sensual, with only that nagging mystery from her past to overshadow its perfection. And when the secret came out, which had been hinted at, it was intense and beautifully sad to read.

I loved those harrowing times and how both characters behaved. Public reaction was hard too, pushing Lucy and Drake against the ropes. I enjoyed how selflessly Drake tried to act as he loved Lucy above else. He's a good man in a sea of bad boys. There is also a great character growth on Lucy's part which helped the story come to a full circle. The tone of the novel is good-hearted and noble, and it's a tribute to freedom, love and service to the country.
I became interested in the Prescott family with brothers and sister whose story might also come along in the future. And Mason's too, he's so cute.

In conclusion, this is a sweet and steamy romance that's nicely balanced with patriotic politics, family values and a touch of drama.

description

I am a big fan of the author's writing. This story flows well, it kept me interested, there were moments that make me giggle and moments that made me fall in love with the characters.

Drake Prescott is a Senator, he is serving his country and loves what he does. He wants to make a difference, he runs a clean campaign and looking at maybe one day being the president. Then he meets Lucy. Lucy is a high school teacher who also has a love for the government is bringing her love to our future. Then Drake walks into her class to give a presentation and everything changes.

You see Lucy has some secrets, some things that only one other person knows and she is scared to let anyone else in, especially someone who will put her in a place she is not prepared for. Can her secrets ruin this incumbent's chances for re-election? Is either of them willing for that to happen? Is their budding relationship strong enough to handle what is going to happen next?

I like a story that keeps you guessing, trying to figure out what this secret is and how are the people involved going to handle it. Drake has a strong personality but a warm sensitive side too. It took Lucy a little while before she came out of her shell and once she did you found a strong, spunky woman who is ready for anything. I also liked meeting the side characters. Drake comes from a big family and being the oldest brother he is the first to get wrapped up in a love story. The ease at which the characters interacted and little glimpses into their lives have me hooked for more.

Title: INCUMBENT
Series: Prescott #1
Category /Genre: Contemporary Romance
Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content
Received from: Joanne Schwehm (as a gift)
Grammar/editing: ungraded – book received as an unedited ARC / errors excused

This is the first in the Prescott series. They will each stand alone, but I still encourage readers to always read the series in the order released.

Lucy and Drake are the kinds of people I would want to be my friends – honest, sweet, loving, loyal, strong, and forgiving. I especially loved that when things got tough, Lucy didn’t run. Instead, she gave Drake space to think things through and make his own decisions. To my way of thinking, that was a show of incredible emotional strength and maturity. Something that is usually lacking in books with younger protagonists.

When I divorced, one of the things that I said when asked, “why” was that loving someone means their happiness is more important than your own, even if giving them that happiness destroys your dreams. Both Lucy and Drake displayed that type of love, but communicating with one another allowed them to find a new dream, together. That is more than love. That is commitment.

Joanne Schwehm is one of my favorite authors and Drake is now my second favorite of her characters. (Sorry, Ryker will always belong to me.) As always, when it comes to her stories, I found myself reading instead of sleeping. It was totally worth it!

I can’t wait to read the stories yet to come in this series. I am completely in love with all of the Prescott siblings and Lucy’s best friend, Mason.
