I can’t believe I finally read it. Woohoo!

Five, four years ago I started reading this interesting book, but I didn’t move past 60 pages because I had this genius idea to copy the myths… by hand. Seeing this is the second time I try reading this we all know how the first attempt ended.

This book covers myths and legends from all around the world which is amazing. However in a book containing 512 pages 200 of those pages are just Greek myths, don’t get me wrong I like Greek mythology but it’s also the most known mythology in the world and I expected more of the unknown (to me at least) stories; some mythologies were only 6 pages long (Finish myth.), comparing it to the number of pages used for Greek mythology seems unfair.

The mythologies I was a tad more interested in (Norse, Slovenian, African) didn’t satisfy my hunger. Norse and Slovenian mythology were too short for my liking, and the African myths were not well organized, concentrating more on themes than tribes which confused the heck out of me. The most surprising of all were the myths of North America which are beautiful.

goated hoe de mens toch weer met dezelfde soort verhalen afkomt. scheppingsmythes, zondvlam, vuurdieven, gedaanteverwisselingen. Heb echt genoten van deze samenvoeging van narratieve capaciteiten van onze voorouders. zou enkel wel wat meer willen geleerd hebben over niche cultuur want maar liefst 200p worden bedeeld aan Griekse mythologie.

Wundervolles Sachbuch, das in einem (ziemlich großen und schweren) Komplettband alle Mythologien und Legenden der Welt abdeckt.
Für mich als Geschichts- und Mythologiefan war es wichtig, endlich mal ein Buch zu haben, in dem ALLES zu finden ist (Europa, Asien, die Amerikas, ...). Dieses Buch erfüllt mir genau diesen Wunsch! Natürlich wird es vermutlich nicht 100% aller Legenden abdecken können, das dürfte nahezu unmöglich sein, aber es scheint mir so vollständig wie möglich zu sein. Ich selbst kann nur die Kapitel des antiken Ägyptens und Griechenlands beurteilen, da ich mich damit am besten auskenne, aber der Schluss liegt nahe, dass das Buch bei den anderen Völkern genauso ausführlich ist.
Außerdem gefällt mir, dass der Anteil von Text, Karten und Fotos/Abbildungen ausgewogen und der Schreibstil wissenschaftlich, aber nicht zu abgehoben ist.

Not what I was expecting, but still enjoyable. Was hoping for more of the actual myths and legends, but still an interesting read. It's a fact that we live in a western world where the Renaissance and enlighten periods gave us the Greeks and the Roman mythology and the wider world's mythology is highly underrepresented. This was a brief glimpse of the other stories. More please.

Took just over 2 years to get through this 500 pager, which says a lot. Can be quite dry, sometimes could only read a few pages at a time, then be weeks before I was in the mood to try again. But persevere I did (don't like to give up on books once I'm past page 50 or so)
Every page has some picture or illustration to go along with the text, and i say text rather than stories. This is more like a historical reference than a set of stories, which is what made it such a chore to get through. Interesting to see common themes among different types of people throughout all of time, regardless of how far apart in both era and geography each may have been.

My parents bought this book for me when I was eight years old. I still have it and I still read from time to time. I love that the book covers, with vivid color photos, mythology from around the world.

Niet gedacht dat ik deze knoeft van een boek op twee dagen zou uitgelezen krijgen... Maar ik heb effe gas gegeven! Jammer genoeg kon het inhoudelijk wel wat beter, vind ik...

Maar laten we positief beginnen: wat erin staat, is wel heel goed. Dit boek bestaat uit 512 bladzijdes in A4-formaat met heel veel informatie, vooral echt samenvattingen van allerlei mythen en legenden van over de hele wereld, op gezette tijden aangevuld met wat korte culturele introducties en honderden foto's die iets afbeelden waarover je leest. De samenhang tussen wat je leest en wat je ziet komt heel goed overeen, want vaak is het bij deze boeken zo dat de afbeeldingen dan op het vorige of volgende blad staan, waardoor dat minder goed op de tekst aansluit.

De vertaling van Jeroen De Keyzer is over het algemeen ook heel goed. Zeker in boeken als dit ben ik wel wat milder, want wat voor een reusachtige klus is dit geweest. Inhoudelijk is het enige dat ik erover kan zeggen dat soms de namen een beetje anders gespeld waren, maar ook dat komt maar een paar keer voor. Verder las het vlot, was het duidelijk, werden de juiste termen gebruikt... Heel knap gedaan. Petje af hiervoor!
De redactie had helaas wel iets beter gekund, want er stonden wel wat storende fouten in, zoals lidwoorden die dubbel stonden of foute splitsingen over regels. En soms viel dat erg mee, maar op andere momenten werd het wat erger en dan viel het op. Maar dan nog liep het zeker niet de spuigaten uit en zou dat geen reden zijn om het boek niet te kopen.

Alleen is het zo dat de verdeling, de verhouding, tussen de mythen wel heel erg scheef zit. 512 bladzijdes, zei ik net, en de eerste 190 (ja!) gaan over de Grieken. Dan zijn er een stuk of tien over de Romeinen en dan komt al de rest aan bod. Nu snap ik wel dat de Griekse mythologie in de westerse wereld een enorme impact heeft gehad, maar dit ging me toch wat te ver. Het is wel een heel scheve verdeling. Aan Afrika wordt ook maar een stuk of 15 bladzijdes besteed (alleen Egypte krijgt evenveel aandacht als de rest van dat werelddeel), Zuidoost-Azië is volledig afwezig, in Zuid-Amerika gaat het bijna alleen maar over de Andesvolkeren zoals de Inca's en komt de Amazone en het hele zuidstuk er met 3 bladzijdes ook heel bekaaid vanaf. En ik vond het dan ook wel heel gek dat 'Oceanië' en 'de Maori' in twee stukken waren gesplitst, want daar was duidelijk heel wat overlap.
Dus: wat er stond was zeker de moeite, maar er hadden gewoon ándere dingen moeten staan, als je 't mij vraagt. De verdeling had veel evenwichtiger kunnen en moeten zijn. En dat is wel heel jammer.
