John Singer Sargent was indeed a master artist and his "Gassed" painting is tragically significant to behold, so many great works!
"Gassed was first displayed at the Royal Academy in London in 1919, where it was voted picture of the year. However, the painting was not universally liked, as E. M. Forster considered it too heroic. Winston Churchill praised its “brilliant genius and painful significance”, though Virginia Woolf attacked its patriotism. "
I highly enjoyed this collection. I generally prefer viewing landscapes when I'm looking at art, however the portraits that Sargent did were captivating, and the people seemed real in that Sargent seemed to have the ability to make their inner self come through the paint.
I was inspired by McCullough's "The Greater Journey" to see the work of Sargent. An Amazon search led me to this book. It was a privilege to even be able to view his catalogue on my kindle tablet. My thanks to all who made this possible. I shall now research when and where I can view his work live in California.
Marvelous work! Born an expatriate, forging his own style despite his environment, Sargent's work is great. I wish he had done more in Northern Africa, I felt a deep stirring by his paintings from there. He also capture the beauty of the Caprisians.
But only four for this book. The problem may be that I am reading it and admiring the pictures on a Kindle. The darks are way too dark, inky even, and all detail is lost. However, even under such conditions a book on Sargent is wonderful.
I knew John Singer Sargent as a portraitest, but this book shows us so much more about his art. One gets to watch as this incredible artist studies, travels, and grows in his art. I was fascinated at how he composed his portrait studies, nearly always creating some visual interest away from the subject - a scarf, fan, painting, couch, or another person to draw the eye. In his travels he painted anything and everything, often in watercolor, which is a difficult medium to control, but obviously Sargent was a master. For me, though, the best were paintings that seemed to be architectural studies or studies of a scene where I didn't notice at first that there were people or animals in the picture at all until I looked wider and was surprised to discover it was so much more than it first appeared. I'm sure I will be turning again and again to this book over the years to discover more each time I look.
