The Christmas Vow is the fourth installation in the Victorian Holiday Romance, 'Hardman Holidays' by Shanna Hatfield.

This story commences with smoldering feelings between Adam Guthry and Tia Devereux, from a past relationship. Years later they come to face to face in their home town, and this couple's feelings ignite into a wildfire of passion.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

He returns home to bury his best friend and his past,
never expecting to fall in love with the woman who destroyed his heart.
Columbia River Pilot Adam Guthry returns to his hometown of Hardman, Oregon, to pay his last respects after the sudden death of his best friend. Emotions he can’t contain bubble to the surface the moment he sees the girl who shattered his heart eleven years ago.

Widow Tia Devereux escapes her restrictive life in Portland, returning to the home she knew and cherished as a girl in Hardman. She and her four-year-old son, Toby, settle into the small Eastern Oregon community, eager for the holiday season. Unfortunately, the only man she’s ever loved shows up, stirring the embers of a long-dead romance into a blazing flame.

When her former father-in-law, a corrupt judge, decides he wants to raise her son, Toby, Adam may be the only hope she has of keeping her son.

Adam and Tia do experience some trials and tribulations that test their newly formed bond. The relationship ignited and continued to grow. When a consequential event places a wedge between their future happiness, a quick decision must be addressed immediately. The conclusion was pleasant and delightful.

This is listed under Christian, Historical, and Western. This clean and wholesome series, with the exception of some passionate kisses, provides a wide array of Holiday and romantical experiences in the town of Hardman, Oregon. It is an enjoyable series and I would recommend it to those that enjoy this genre.

A great series where every book takes place at Christmas. Perfect December reads for the western historical romance fan! Hatfield does a lot of research into her books and always notes at the end of the book some of the things she learned in her research which I always find fascinating.

I am loving the Town of Hardman more and more with each book in this series. The Christmas Vow was WoW just WoW!! I really love the second chance Romance as in the Christmas Vow with Adam and Tia. Little Toby just makes Adam and Tia story even more sweeter. Shanna Hatfield’s writing is just so incredibly beautiful. Her books can soothe the ragged edges of ones troubled soul and make the outlook on life a little brighter.

I have now read 4 of the 5 books in this series and have enjoyed them. These are not deep books. They are light romantic, happily-ever-after books. However, thus far, this was my favorite because it had some surprises and a couple of "sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat" chapters and a real villain. Having read 4 books in the series, the characters are like old friend to me and I have enjoyed following the stories.

The Christmas Vow by Shanna Hatfield is the fourth book in her series Hardman Holidays, a sweet historical holiday romance. Each book in the series features a different couple in the western town of Hardman around the turn of the century. I love revisiting each year, meeting new characters, and seeing how life changes in the little town from year to year. In this installment, we meet Adam Guthry, Arlan’s older brother, who returns to town for his best friend’s funeral and Tia Devereux, Adam’s old sweetheart who broke his heart when she married another and never returned home. Fate is giving them a second chance, the question is will they take it.

I both liked and disliked Adam. He was so quick to believe the worst in Tia. He never stopped to consider that she may have had feelings for him and that his weren’t clear for her. Instead he threw himself into work and tried to forget her. As a Columbia River Pilot, Adam’s job is both dangerous and time-consuming. He has little time to think of her or start a new relationship. Now nearly ten years later and taking a much needed break at the holidays, he has no choice but to confront the feelings he once had for her.

I loved Tia. She was a young girl when she met her first husband who treated her like a queen. Thinking that Adam would never propose, she was quick to accept this man’s proposal and never returned home. It was a mistake she regretted often. But the one thing she couldn’t regret was the son her marriage gave her. Little Toby is a godsend. He is so much fun in this book, bringing levity when needed but also some of the most heartfelt conversations that brought tears to my eyes. Now a widow, Tia is home, raising her little boy alone. While lonely, she is content with her life until Adam arrives back in town and all the what-if’s and might-have-been’s plague her once more.

The story revolves around Adam and Tia’s past and current relationship. When Tia’s father-in-law threatens to take Toby in a custody battle, Adam steps in vowing to protect them both. I love the dynamic here. The tension from her father-in-law and the marriage of convenience to keep Toby creates plenty of heartache and drama. I found myself rooting for the two of them early on. And I just love Toby.

Overall, I enjoyed The Christmas Vow. It’s exactly what I’ve come to expect from the series, a sweet romance with a HEA. If you enjoy historical romance, I highly recommend it.

The Christmas Vow is sweet little Christmas story between two people who still loved each other but who were afraid to say it to each other. They had loved each other as teens but then Tia went off to another city for a visit and married an older man. She got tired of waiting for Adam to proclaim his love for her. They reconnect in Hardman after Adam comes home to attend the funeral of a dear friend. Adam becomes her protector when Tia's evil ex-father in law attempts to gain custody of her small son.

I loved this book for the suspense element thrown in. There are a few wicked evil characters in this book that makes it an interesting read. The romance in this book was just right. There was no excessive kissing like in The Christmas Token. I loved the chemistry between Adam and Tia. And that little boy Toby was just adorable. I love the way the author weaves the characters of children in her books.

I'm getting ready to read the last book in the series but I hope it won't be the last. I'd love to fast forward a few years from now and read the story of a romance between Toby and Erin.

Adam, Tia and Toby

This is a sweet and loving story written by Shanna Hatfield. She has done an exceptional job with the plot and the characters. She has filled the pages with excitement, adventure, mystery, humor and the promise of forever love. Adam and Tia had grown up as friends together and thought they would marry. Circumstances changed things for them and she married a wealthy man in another town and they had a young son, Toby. Again circumstances changed life for them again. Adam and Tia meet again at the funeral of their old school friend. You will enjoy discovering if and how they discover their happily ever after.

Through

Adam and Tia were meant to be. Though they both were young when Tia up and left town where she ended up marrying another man; her heart was always Adam's.
Adam never got over Tia leaving and marrying sometime else. It wasn't until Adam came home for the funeral of his best friend that he came face to face with Tia.
When Toby,Tia's young son, was being stocked by her former father-in-law, Adam stepped up married Tia and fought off the men sent to take Toby away from Tia.
This was an action packed story full of love and action.

Thrilling story

This is Adam and Tia's story. They are new characters to Hardman even though they both grew up together in Hardman. This story has a lot of intrigue, especially when it comes to Tia's son Toby. You'll definitely want to read this story to see how it plays out in the end. All the characters of Hartman come alive at Shanna's hand. I can't wait to read more about these people and see what happens in the next books.

Loved it!

Clean historical romance. Set in the 1890s in eastern Oregon.
Adam and Tia grew up together and fell in love, but her insecurities kept them apart for 11 years. Adam came home for a friend funeral and discovered Tia needed his help. He stepped up in a big way and made a vow to protect her and her son. " After all, a vow was much more than a promise, far deeper than a commitment. It was a pledge, a troth to another, and Adam intended to honor every word."

The Christmas Vow

Wonderful story of young love, resurrected 11 years later but just as strong. Adam returns home to attend his dearest friends funeral and saw the love of his life. It was difficult to stay away from her because of her darling little 4yr old son Toby. Action begins when father in law hires thugs to kidnap his grandson, Toby. Adam goes he will protect and love Toby and his mother. He always keeps his promises. Great story.

While I appreciate the author did research into many aspects of this story, particularly the nautical side, I wish she would have done some basic research into everyday things to modern society. In the setting of this book, indoor bathrooms and running water would be highly unlikely. This kept pulling me out of the story. I also found the writing jarring at times. All the build up about the second-chance romance and in-law drama came to a let down on both parts.

The good part was the villain started out as an evil character with nefarious intentions. The hero is the salt of the earth. The Christmas bow around everything was a wee bit too big. It was designed to cover some flaws. Since it’s a Christmas story, I’ll leave the bow be.

I have been thoroughly enjoying this series - perfect reading during a Covid-19 Christmas season. I like that each one tackles a different type of romantic challenge. The characters are well-drawn, and become friends. There's a little bit of mystery/suspense in each one, along with the romantic tension. Do start with #1!
