This was a good start. It reads a little like a sitcom. The family has a witch, werewolf and a empathic reader. There is also a vampire and a police chief in the mix. This was book 1 and 2. The family seems to be trying to get back in control of their lives after their parents died. They seem a little lost and are trying to find their place on the island. Book 1 was okay, I enjoyed the sea hag and the leeches. They were unique. Book 2 gave more character development and the story line actually started for real.....Their dad isn't dead.

I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

This was a good read. Looking at the reviews, I see many commenting about the poor writing – how there are a lot of mistakes throughout the series. I love looking for mistakes (editor-in-training) and usually, when I read a story with a lot of mistakes, it will cause me to downgrade my rating, but…I didn’t notice that many errors. Maybe this was an updated version? I don’t know what to say there. I found the changing of the POV’s somewhat interesting as I’ve never read a story that changed so frequently, but it wasn’t hard for me to follow.

Overall, I liked the characters, they all had their own uniqueness about them. I wish Melinda would have done more magic-related stuff, but unfortunately, she didn’t. Other than that, I can’t wait to see what happens between her, Riley, and William.

Questions/Comments:

I found it questionable that the Howard family has been tasked to watch over/keep safe the power source on the Isle for the last few hundred years, YET, they have no clue where it’s located. How does that work?

There’s mention of Michael having not had his empathic abilities for very long. Why wasn’t there more information relating to that? What made him suddenly acquire it?

I’ve read/listened to/watch plenty of…material relating to werewolves. I can safely say this was the first time I heard about this specific alpha system in this series. So, when a werewolf bites someone, that wolf is automatically an alpha? So, the person they bit will be their subservient. I just found that strange. Usually, the alphas are specific wolves that are more dominating, the A-personality types. That’s not the case here.

There’s a part when Melinda trips and is falling to the ground. What does she do? I’m sure most people would reach out to stop themselves from crashing into the ground. Melinda, on the other hand, protects her face…

There’s also a questionable part when William states that his blood is poisonous to werewolves. But then a few pages later, Charlie states that if he bites William, “William, the vampire, would be dead in minutes.” Huh?

(On a side note, I'm an editor-in-training. I love looking for mistakes, so if you or anyone you know is looking for a good deal on an editing (I do a line/developmental combo) or proofreading service, be sure to look me up at https://redpenediting.net)

It's hard to evaluate this book / these books. They were very quick reads, and some of the characters are well written and easy to get involved with. However, other characters are just plain bad, the POV switches constantly, and there are more grammatical/spelling errors than I'd like. The premise and plot are good - if a bit shallowly developed.
I downloaded this ebook free, and after finishing, investigated the further SEVEN books in the series. Unfortunately the one resolution I wanted to see does not occur anywhere in those seven books, so I won't pay to continue a mediocre experience.

Good for reading over again

I just finished read a collection of one through seven and have read the first book at least three times. It is a must read if you are into the paranormal. Get to know Melinda, Charlie, Michael, and William as they protect the island they call home. Adult readers due sexual and violent content.

Torn.. completely torn.. on one hand, I like the story.. the other... I can't STAND the way POV switches back and forth from sentence to sentence... not just between 2 characters.. like 3 or 4 sometimes.

Great books in the keeping of all the others. Enjoyable Melinda keeps us in suspense as to what's next. She doesn't mind being exiled as she is with her friend and handsome vampire. Eventually she has to leave and do what she is supposed to. Quick, easy reading

Good book. Fast moving, interesting characters that could be your neighbors IF you lived on an island, that is! Thanks to the author.
