THE CONSORT by Suzanne Johnson
Faulkner Hearne, the captain of the ruthless Fae Hunters, finds his duty at odds with his heart when he’s ordered to capture the consort of Faerie’s cruel Prince of Summer when she flees across the veil into modern New Orleans. Can Faulk turn Liandra over to a certain death at the hands of the prince, or will he risk a war with Faerie in order to save her? An all-new novella set in the Sentinels of New Orleans multiverse.
HEART’S BLOOD by Jeffe Kennedy, a Twelve Kingdoms novella
A dark fairytale retelling of a princess robbed of rank, husband and even her name. Nix is nothing. The Princess Natilde—her former waiting woman—attacked her on the journey to wed Prince Cavan, stripping her of everything and taking her place. With no serving skills, Nix becomes a goose girl. Perhaps if Nix keeps her promise never to reveal who she really is, Natilde won’t carry out her vile threats. Prince Cavan entered his arranged marriage determined to have a congenial, if not loving relationship with his future queen—for the sake of both their kingdoms. But, his wife repels him more each day and he finds himself absurdly drawn to the lovely Nix.
THE DJINN IN THE MIRROR by Mina Khan, a Djinn World novella
A paranormal Cinderella story with a young witch as the heroine and a wicked, sexy djinn instead of a fairy godmother. Dahlia, the step-daughter of a power hungry wizard, promises to free a djinn trapped in a mirror if he rescues her from impending death. But Ashmael the djinn has his own agenda: to trick & seduce his way to freedom. The only problem is he ends up falling for Dahlia. Can he win his freedom and save the girl?
A mixture of styles that feature perhaps darker more murky stories . A very good way to see if you can discover new authors but perhaps not always the best examples of these authors work . The first story by Rachel Caine was quite shocking from the outset as it's set in a time of segregation and prejudice but as usual this top notch author delivers a story both interesting and poignant. Think more Sam Spade and less Harper Lee in terms of style . Now the second story most definitely had the Maltese Falcom vibe running through it with a detective meeting a very seductive client but she is far from ordinary because she's a vampire! Loved the hero Mick and the twist at the end. Megan Hart is a new author to me but her take on selling your soul to the devil and the consequences was an interesting one. The one thing guaranteed is that old Lucifer is very good at playing tricks and taking advantage of the unwary but sometimes even he can make mistakes . Another new author to me has written The Consort and I really liked this story. A strong heroine who is unafraid to take chances and a Fae hero caught up in a brewing war. If you enjoy stories involving the Hunt then this romantic adventure will surely get you itching to read more from Ms Johnson. Hearts Blood is by another new to me author and this time the Fae element seemed a tad underused. A young princess bargains for her life with disastrous consequences . Luckily not everyone is fooled and yes there's a happy ending but I'm still left reeling although as a new take on the fabled Goose Girl story it was an entertaining idea. The final story is by Mina Khan and had great pace , an unlikely hero and enough romance to satisfy this reader. The heroine Dahlia is in a very difficult situation and makes a bargain with a Djinn but there's more than one simple story here and the author has crafted a very well written and engaging tale Ok now of course I have favourites and I'm not sure that paranormal noir correctly describes all these short stories but there is a slightly dark outlook to all of them. It was a lovely way to discover a couple of new authors although I'm not sure if these stories are typical of their main body of work. Still if you purchase at the introductory price then it's clearly a bargain ! I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
Provocative, refreshing, melancholy and reminiscent of Grimm Fairy Tales. I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories. Usually in an anthology I read it for one author. I generally hope that I like that author's story. It's always iffy with anthologies because the more authors, the more chances one of the stories could disappoint and the overall rating drop. After reading this book, I'm still loving the authors who made me want to read this book. In addition, I've found new authors I must explore.
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine kicks the book off with a racial film noir theme. It's bold to bring this type of racial setting in today's racially tense environment. I liked it. Ms. Caine does an excellent job of creating a likeable flawed anti-hero. Valentine is a guy who does the right thing despite his jaded view. This story moved fast and smooth. The imagery is vivid. Ms. Caine makes the story come alive. I could see the book play in my mind in like a black and white film. There would be accents of colours here and there. The ending is unfortunately what I anticipated and it leaves me satisfied albeit un peu triste. Loved it.
Femme fatale by Cynthia Eden is an enjoyable. The story is a bit predictable and the characters didn't pull me in too much. Mick Swayne is a decent PI. Savannah wasn't an anti-heroine.
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart is probably the most painful one to read. This is to be expected as I'm a devoted masochist to Ms. Hart's skillful torment. Ms. Hart is so good at slipping a dagger into my heart and twisting it whilst I'm still trying to come to terms with the story. I loved this story from beginning to end. The twists and turns broke my heart. Ms. Hart possesses a gift. She forces me to respond in every story she writes. Her characters may not always be ones I like or admire, but they always make me feel. If I want a book which invokes strong sentiments, Ms. Hart is my go to author. I feel hung over after reading her books because of how her characters and situations speak to me. For me, Ms. Hart is a sadist unparalleled by any other. She is a psychic vampire manipulating readers to feel intensely and then leave them drained. The ending slayed me. This story is the only one where there was no black and white. It is truly a question of does the ends justify the means?
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson pleasantly surprised me. I love fae stories. I am a complete sucker for fae and when there is a Hunter in them, I'm a wet puddle. When the Hunter creates a bar which contains a fantasy "holodeck" where one can be prey to a Hunter and end up in quite the consensual non-con scene, I'm even more hooked. This world where the Summer and Winter princes are at odds with each other promises to be an interesting read. I can only hope Ms. Johnson writes more in this universe because it can go really dark and I'd love it. The Summer Prince's sexual cruelty would be guiltily arousing. Seeing how Faulk and Lia try to survive the oncoming war will be intriguing. I'll be keeping my eye on Ms. Johnson.
Full disclosure, I received this arc for Heart's Blood by Jeff Kennedy. I was not disappointed. I love reading about the Twelve Kingdoms and this reinterpretation of the Goose Girl worked for me. I liked the magic. I liked the brutality. I loved the Prince and I loved Nix. They may not have been as complex as Ms. Hart's characters, but they still appealed to me. This story is black and white in villain versus hero. There are no anti-heroes here. There is only betrayal and a rewarding ending a la Grimm style. I loved the ending, even if it was predictable.
Who is this Mina Khan? This is probably my second favourite story in the book. The Djinn in the Mirror is rich with descriptions. I could feel the desert heat. I could see the dusty attic. I could hear and feel the earth tremors. This tightly written story about Cinderella mixed with Snow White is innovative and delightful. Taking an old and familiar concept and making it fresh is impressive. The characters are well written. The anti-hero , Ashmael is definitely delicious. The sex in this story is the only thing which didn't work for me. I didn't really care for it and whilst I understand the need for it in the story, it detracted from the story. Ms. Khan writes an excellent sexual build up with teasing tension. However, when the sexual act commences, it's a bit too vanilla for me to enjoy. Where's the kinky stuff? The cock teasing ribbon around Dahlia's neck made me hope for some rough kinky sex. The world building in this book is great and I want to learn more about the war. I want to learn more about the Djinn. I really hope there are stories about some of the secondary characters. This is an author to watch.
Those who are looking for dark non-con or dub-con, this may be too sweet for you. Those who are looking for anti-heroes that we love to hate, there are none here. This anthology is recommended for paranormal romance lovers who enjoy a bit of sorrow and pain before they get their happily ever afters. My final thought…what is it about whiskey dick? Seriously, is this like Super Troopers where they had a phrase they all had to slip in?
*I received this book as a review copy in return for an honest review
A few short stories/novellas with darkness in them.
Marion missing by Rachel Caine PI Val tries to find who killed his partner Tilde. Mystery murder and darkness. Good.
Femme fatale by Cynthia Eden A vamp and a PI. Kind of boring. I started skimming, even though it was only a novella.
Dance with the devil by Megan Hart It started off a bit meh, but turned interesting. The devil is cruel.
The consort by Suzanne Johnson A fae running from a fae prince. I liked this story
Heart's blood by Jeffe Kennedy It was really good and all, but I just read another retelling of the goose girl, so I was never surprised.
The djinn in the mirror by Mina Khan I liked the djinn world the best. Would love a book about that. The rest of the story was good, but not as good as the djinn world.
Some I liked more, some I likes less. But that is the thing with anthologies. There are always the ones you like more, and the ones that might not fit your style. The 3 least were my favorites. Must be because of the fantasy elements.
Anthology with dark secrets and noir in common. Six great stories, all making me want to read more!
Rachel Caine´s Marion, Missing; PI Valentine is suffering the loss of his partner when he gets unexpected help in an investigation Marion´s got a big part in. Noir, crimes and investigations, and had me sniffling at the end.
Cynthia Eden´s Femme Fatale; Vampire Savannah needs the help of PI Mick, but first to convince him of her own existence. PNR, action and smut in a great combo.
Megan Hart´s Dance with the Devil; Kathleen´s made a deal with the Devil and can´t turn him down no matter what he requests. When her life is brightened by a gorgeous man she´ll have to make a decision about who to put first. Is Jake worth breaking her deal and the consequences? PNR, lots of emotions and smutty fluff. Sniffle-worthy
Suzanne Johnson´s The Consort; The fae world is complicated, and when Liandra learns just that, she has no alternative than to run - into the human world. When the leader of the Fae Hunters is assigned the case, her time is up. Can Faulk turn Liandra over to certain death, or will he try to save her? PNR romance, smut and action in a great combo. A series I´ll read more from.
Jeffe Kennedy´s Heart´s Blood; An arrange marriage is about to happen, when the Princess is attacked and replaced on her way to the Prince. Cavan has no idea that the woman taking her place in his castle isn´t who she says she is, or that the girl accompanying her, is. Nix is placed with the geese, but the impersonator isn´t satisfied, she wants Nix gone. Can Nix ever get clear from the threats? PNR Romance, emotions and talking horses in a great combo.
Mina Khan´s The Djinn in the Mirror; Dahlia is almost of age to get ownership of the house her mother left her, but Dahlia´s stepfather isn´t prepared to hand it over. When Dahlia learns of the threat she´s also made aware of a possible protector, a Djinn captured and held prisoner. Will she be able to make a deal to save her life, and can they stand against her stepfather? PNR romance, suspense and smut in a great combo.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This box set is quite the mix. You have 6 very different, very dark, stories.
At the beginning, it tells you what Paranormal Noir is. I thought after reading the first two stories that I had it pegged. But the next four are nothing like the first couple. What I mean is that I thought of Film Noir, like those old black and white detective shows. You know, you've got a hardened Private Eye who is hired by a sultry lady, but it's gritty and dark. The first two fit that well, The next four were all over the map, so I guess I didn't quite catch what Paranormal Noir is. Maybe just a dark Paranormal?
Marion Missing by Rachel Caine- 3.5 stars
This was interesting. Taking place decades ago, a cynical PI is hired by his former partner, a ghost, to help solve her murder. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it caught and held my attention, and had an ending I didn't see coming.
Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden- 5 stars
It's no secret I love Cynthia Eden. This story has a hardened detective hired by a beautiful woman who just happens to be a vampire. This story takes place in the here and now, and was full of the typical Cynthia Eden brand of suspense meets romance for a true paranormal romantic suspense.
Dance With the Devil by Megan Hart-2 stars
I hated this story. Seriously. BUT that being said, it's really well-written, I'd expect no less from Ms. Hart. And it's definitely dark and paranormal. Kathleen sold her soul to the devil, and the things she's done for him! She hates him, but hates herself even more. Until she meets someone who knows what she's going through. I hated the heroine, hated the story, and even though I swore I'd DNF it, it pulled me back. Hart's writing is addictive like that.
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson-5 stars
I've never read this author before, and I loved this story so much, I instantly clicked over to her website only to find, that while her other books sound interesting, they're UF, not necessarily Romance. I still bought the first book in the series, but I really wanted more in this world she created. With a fae hunter who's tasked to bring back the lovely consort to a prince, what happens when he falls for her?
Heart's Blood by Jeffe Kennedy-1 star
Wow, I hated this story. I read somewhere that this was a retelling of the fairy tale "The Goose Girl." I looked it up, and sure enough it is. But the heroine in this story is so weak, and I know it makes sense, and I won't spoil the part that had me nearly throw my Nook across the room, but I hated her. I know not every heroine can be badass, and I truly don't mind a damsel in distress. In fact I like watching a hero save his heroine. But I hated the hero, hated the heroine, and felt that the ending of the villain should've been more, well, just more. It wasn't enough.
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan- DNF
I feel this is an unfair review because I didn't finish it, but after 2 such awful stories, when this turned out to not be to my taste, I gave up. No rating. Other reviews have said it's a lush world full of great storytelling, so take that for what it's worth.
I received a copy of this title from the authors for the purpose of proving an honest review. This is an original review from http://bookedandloaded.com All opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.
As a whole, Dark Secrets: A Paranormal Noir Anthology was truly a joy to read! Full of grit, grime and unexpected heroes, it kept me turning the pages. With the price set at $0.99 it is a STEAL. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for some new paranormal authors or wanting some inside information from the stories you already love…this is one you must pick up!
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine
I was surprised by the setting. It is not very often we take a step back in time to when segregation was law . The surprise ended up being a pleasant one with even more surprises. Not a traditional ghost story, but one that left me with a sense of content. I loved the sense of good vs true evil and man, was her bad guy nasty! It was brutal, sweet and unexpected! I liked it!!
4.5/5
Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden
A vampire love story with much to offer, Femme Fatale was a fun read. I was quickly swept up with the characters and was surprised with the amount of backstory we learned about Mick and Savannah in such a short time. Fast paced and full of action, I truly enjoyed this story!
4/5
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart
Hmmm. I honestly liked the concept of this story, but didn’t care of the characters. And not just because Kathleen was a hard character to like. The inability of these characters to stand up to the Devil and to continue to do his bidding and self-destruct themselves in the process left me a tad uncomfortable.
3/5
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson
Suzanne Johnson writes characters that always seem to just “fit” with me. Always a little quirky and well defined, these are the types of characters that stay with you long after you flip the last page. The Consort was a great story and a deeper look in fae politics for those that follow her New Orleans Sentinels series. Well done and I want more!
4.5/5
Heart’s Blood by Jeffe Kennedy, a Twelve Kingdoms novella
I have read some previous books by Jeffe Kennedy and they have left me with the same kind of feeling as Heart’s Blood. A little bit confused and equally uncomfortable. Pieces of this tale had me cringing inside and it certainly contains some trigger areas. (rape / animal death) The author did sell me in the end. The ending was quite beautiful and did leave me with a good feeling.
3.5/5
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan, a Djinn World Novella
Khan created a wonderfully detailed and deep story in this short. A great story with wonderful characters. The Djinn in the Mirror held me captive and still left me wanting more. An interesting story about our individual strengths and how we choose what to do with them. Everyone has the potential to be a positive or negative force in their life. This story also had a great dark side to it with Edgar. Learning a bit of his backstory truly made you wish for his destruction!
4.5/5
As an overall rating for the Anthology I am rating it a solid 4/5 Bullets!
I'm part of this anthology so of course I love it. However, I have a better reason for writing this review: all the other authors in the series are my auto-buy authors. I love to read their words. So yes, I read all the stories and here are my thoughts.
1. Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine. Rachel's stories always awe and surprise me. On the surface, this is an awesome noir tale involving a detective, a ghost, a murderous villain, and heartbreak. But it's so much more. She captures the attitudes and details of 1950s Texas (DFW), and also makes you reflect about the world today. This was my favorite.
2. Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden. I really enjoy Cynthia's paranormal stories and this was no different. A fast-paced tale with a classy and bold Lady vamp, a noir detective hero, twists and feels.
3. Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart. Again on the surface this is a "deal with the devil" story, but as you get more and more into it, the story is also about what it means to love someone, the choices we make, and makes you reflect on what we blame the devil for and how much control the devil really has. And yes, all of this is delivered via Hart's trademark exquisite, heart-wrenching writing.
4. The Consort by Suzanne Johnson. I love reading urban fantasy and smart heroines, and this delivers both. I already enjoy Suzanne's Sentinels of New Orleans series, and am looking forward to read more in this new fae direction (but my favorite is still the immortal pirate Jean Lafitte).
5. Heart's Blood by Jeffe Kennedy. I'm a big fan of Jeffe's Twelve Kingdoms series, so I was looking forward to this one. However, I wasn't familiar with The Goose Girl fairy tale. This intrigued me enough to learn more about that original story and find other retellings. It also made me examine "identity" more -- what is our identity, how we are defined and redefined through life, and how we take ownership of our own identity.
6.The Djinn in the Mirror -- Since this is my story, all I'm going to say is that this is part of my Djinn World stories. In fact, if you read (or have read) A Christmas Wish you'll notice some linkage and progression. Also, my favorite character in this story is Rasputin :)
I had the honor to read the ARC for Dark Secrets—A Paranormal Noir Anthology. I will admit—I’m a big fan of Megan Hart. Years ago, I found one of her erotic romance novels and a love for the sub-genre began. So, when posed with the option of reviewing an anthology in which she had a story, I knew I’d be disappointed if I let my busy life make me say no. And with that, I have now been introduced to five other talented authors: Rachel Caine, Cynthia Eden, Suzanne Johnson, Jeffe Kennedy and Mina Khan.
Anthologies are special—a collection of short stories or novelettes with a common theme. I enjoy reading anthologies—in part—for this reason. Sometimes the theme is completely obvious and there’s no question what the common thread will be. Other times, you have to read the stories in order to decipher what that commonality is.
Dark Secrets—A Paranormal Noir Anthology appears on its surface to announce its theme. Paranormal Noir, right? But I beg to differ. Yes, each story has its paranormal element. A ghost. A vampire. Faeries. A djinn. Magic. The devil—for crying out loud. But after reading the six stories, I found the thread woven between all the stories dealt with more than just the preternatural. Each story dove into the concept of free will. Each hero and heroine had to make difficult choices as to whether to succumb to the darkness or find a better way. Whether that was intentional by the six authors, I know not. But it was beautifully knitted through these very unique tales.
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine
This story delves into the darkest depths of human beings to where despicable atrocities can be rendered. Warren Valentine is a private investigator wallowing in guilt and grief over the loss of his partner, Tilde Sands. She’d been killed in a heinous manner while investigating a case. His guilt is causing him to close down the PI office until he gets a visit from Tilde’s relatives asking for his assistance in finding their granddaughter, who has gone missing. Initially, he refuses the case. He’s closing down shop. But a visit from Tilde’s ghost forces the detective on the case he feels will be the end of him—for real.
Throughout the story, the author drags us through the darkness of a human soul as we find out what Tilde had been investigating before her death. Warren’s love for his partner and his need to end the horribleness of the crimes makes him a powerful hero. Does he solve the crime or join Tilde in the other world? I will not say. My only wish is that there had been a prologue giving the reader some glimpse into Tilde and Warren before the actual story takes place. But the story is written well and gravely intriguing.
Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden
Though I am not the largest paranormal reader, I am a fan of vamps. This story involves a private investigator—Mick Swayne and a vampire—Savannah. Savannah sought out Mick to help in solving the murders of two men completely drained of blood and dumped at Navy Pier—or so we are led to believe. Clearly, it seems like a vampire has gone haywire. But do the humans believe in vamps? This story is filled with all sorts of twists and turns—introducing the rogue vamp—Kale Vargas, who has had an intimate relationship with the heroine, and a mortal bartender—Will Mato.
Mick and Savannah’s attraction to each other is immediate and palpable. We learn that Savannah turns to Mick for a reason—more than just seeking his help in solving the murders. However, the relationship between Kale and Savannah is not explored enough for the reader to really feel their prior connection or its importance to this story. And Will Mato initially seems superfluous—a little background on him would have been beneficial in making his character more pronounced. With the complexity of the relationships between the characters, this story could easily be worked into a full length novel. The writing is good and fast paced, which makes for an easy read, but as a reader, I wanted a little more.
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart
Kathleen Murphy is a famous best-selling author. She flounders in self-hatred and disgust. Her marriage fell apart. She has a distant relationship with her daughter. She drowns in alcohol. She believes she sold her soul to the devil for her fame and fortune—doing his biding for fear of losing herself completely. But did she sell her soul? And if so, for what exactly?
Jake enters her life—though initially rebuffed because Kathleen can’t seem to bring herself to allow Jake to be exposed to the devil and his deeds. But soon happiness begins to make its appearance and Kathleen doesn’t know what to do about the devil and his meddling. Can she break free from the devil and be happy? I truly enjoyed this tale as we sometimes find ourselves in certain situations thinking we are there for one reason-did the devil make us do it?- and find out—in fact—we are there because of something else entirely.
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson
Liandra, daughter of Caeme the Metalworker, becomes the consort of Prince Florian—who is looking to take over the throne with his vicious ways. Being traded to Florian by her father for a foal, Lia slips through the faerie veil into the human world of New Orleans in order to escape the torture of Florian. But never having been in the human world leaves her scared and lonely and hunted—as no one makes Prince Florian look the fool.
Faulkner Hearne is the owner of the Hunt Club in New Orleans and has blended into the human world. Underneath the outward appearance of his club, Faulk runs the Fae Hunters, which brings back faerie escapees to the Fae world. And now he’s on the hunt for Prince Florian’s consort, Lia—who he eventually recognizes as the girl that intrigued him before he left the fae world. Will he return Lia to Florian or protect her at all costs?
This was one of the more fascinating stories as I don’t have much experience in the faerie world. It was beautifully described so that the reader could easily visualize it. This was more of a picturesque story than anything else for me. I enjoyed reading about this world, its people and the magic of it.
Heart’s Blood by Jeffe Kennedy
All is not as it seems on the shores of Erie and Prince Cavan knows it so. An arranged marriage between kingdoms, Prince Cavan needs to consummate his marriage to Princess Natilde. What’s so hard about that? He can’t stand the princess and her hateful demeanor, yet he’s drawn to her servant, Nix and her magical horse Falada, that escorted Natilde to Erie.
On the journey to Erie, Nix—the real princess—is beaten and battered by a woman posing as a servant. This woman impersonates Natilde and forces her to live a life of peasantry. But the new Natilde’s jealousy over Cavan’s obvious attraction and concern of Nix causes her to reveal her true self.
This story was well written—the emotions of Nix and Cavan so greatly portrayed. I enjoyed the storyline and the character development. Some of the most real characters in this collection of stories. I did feel that the woman posing as Natilde was somewhat one dimensional and we never really understand what drives her to do the things she did. How did she come about meeting Nix? Was there a deeper reason for her doing what she did to Nix? Her intentions would have been most welcome to round out the story. But otherwise, quite the tale.
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan
I’ll be honest—I had to look up the term djinn. I wasn’t familiar with it at all. As I learned, it has its origin in Islamic mythology—dealing with spirits that are capable of appearing in human and animal forms and influencing people for either good or not.
Ashmael is the Djinn damned to be stuck in the mirror by Dahlia’s ancestors. He’s been there a long time and only Dahlia can release him. She’s introduced to Ashmael by her djinn friend, Rasputin—a cat, who is trying to save her from the evils of her step-father, Edgar and his witchery ways.
Dahlia can’t seem to explain the attraction she has to Ashmael, but for the first time in her life she feels alive, which is why she releases Ashmael with hopes that he will willingly help her get away from her step-father. Having been locked in the mirror for all those years, Ashmael first must find his family in the Djinn world and make a mends for his absence—but his attraction to Dahlia is compelling and he finds himself torn. Will he make it back to Dahlia before her step-father’s magic ruins her?
Though I found a few small inconsistencies in the story’s facts about the characters, the author told a tale of magic in all its forms with true romantic elements.
Dark Secrets—A Paranormal Noir Anthology is worth the read—whether a fan of paranormal or not. Though please be warned, some of these stories are not for the faint of heart. There is action, romance, sex, history and mystery. A great combination of stories from a great combination of authors for 4 Silver Buckles!
The Dark Secrets anthology gives readers a look at six very different paranormal-themed novellas, each with varying degrees of darkness and all with a touch of romance.
Marion, Missing? by Rachel Caine Set in post-WWII Texas, Warren Valentine (Val) is mourning the death of his PI partner, Tilde Sands, a negro female. However he’s having trouble since she’s manifested as a ghost that won’t leave him alone until he stops the man who killed her. Marion, Missing? is a decent noir detective story with a twist on paranormal romance. The mystery and crime-solving went a little slowly and felt abstract because Tilde couldn't tell Val directly what she knew. The story was okay, but not really my thing.
My Rating: C
Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden The second story in the anthology is another PI mystery. Mick Swayne lives in a world where humans are unaware that the monsters of myth and movies are real. When two young men are found dead, and their bodies drained of blood, vampire Savannah Moreau hires Mick to help her stop the vampire killer and protect her from being the next victim. Femme Fatale reads like a more typical paranormal romance, albeit shorten. I liked the twists the author tossed in; however, sometimes the dialogue felt cliche and corny. And some of the plot points were equally as cheesy, but it mostly works for the story.
My Rating: B-
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart Kathleen Murphy sold herself to the Devil long ago, and now she must do his bidding or give up her soul. She remains lonely and isolated, even from her beloved daughter, in an effort to protect those she cared about. Yet somehow Jake cuts past the walls Kathleen has erected and steals her heart. Dance with the Devil absolutely blew me away! It was an intense and emotionally powerful tale of the lengths one will go to for those she loves. I love how we didn’t typically know what the Devil asks of Kathleen, yet we saw the emotional upheaval and physical results of the manifestations of her guilt. It’s very powerful: horrific without being gruesome. The story is utterly engrossing and compelling, really making me think after I finished reading it. The tale is heartbreaking, yet beautiful in so many ways.
My Rating: A+
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson (set in the Sentinels of New Orleans world) Faulkner Hearne is the captain of the Fae Hunters, a group who lives in the human realm, tracking down the Fae who cross over without permission. When he is commanded by the Prince of the Summer Court to locate his newest consort, Liandra, Faulkner isn’t certain he’ll be able to turn her over to face the horrors that await her. As a huge fan of Ms. Johnson’s Sentinels of New Orleans series, I completely enjoyed seeing the Winter and Summer Fae Princes again. I enjoyed that the pair knew each other from youth; how he remembered her. Since I love the world and series, this was an enjoyable, quick read; however I’m not sure how it would play out if I hadn’t read the series. Overall, an entertaining paranormal romance.
My Rating: A-
Heart's Blood by Jeffe Kennedy (set in the world of the Twelve Kingdoms)
Cavan, prince and heir to the throne of Erie, was wed via long-distance to Princess Natilde, who has just recently arrived at his castle. He had hoped for a connection, but when he saw her there was none. He feels down and bleak, except when he’s with the servant girl, Nix. The woman formally known as Natilde, now called Nix, is posing as a servant girl in the keep of Princess Natilde. Heart’s Blood shares the sweet romance between two souls. I enjoyed discovering what put Nix in her predicament and watching Cavan piece together the truth. The two make the perfect pair. Both fair, honest, and just, putting the best interests of others before themselves. Their love filled me with optimism and happiness.
My Rating: A
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan (set in the Djinn World) This paranormal romance is loosely based on the Cinderella fairytale, with Dahlia playing the part of the abused stepdaughter and Edgar, the evil stepfather. Edgar is a dark witch and sadistic cult leader who wants Dahlia for himself and to use the powerful heritage blood within her for his own power. But when Dahlia discovers a djinn, Ashmael, trapped in a mirror, she frees him and barters for her protection. The Djinn in the Mirror was my least favorite title in the anthology. I didn't care for the continuity of the story. It started with saving Dahlia, then once Ashmael was freed, an entire second story began, with Ashmael traveling home and discovering his family was betrayed and killed. While there were some good parts to that piece of the story, I think the tale would have been much better if it stayed focused on one aspect or the other. Even then, I felt the story dragged. It was a bit cheesy, and I just couldn't get into it. Dahlia was too wide-eyed and idealistic.
My Rating: C-
So in the end, Dark Secrets has three great stories and three not-as-great stories. None were bad, and the three that I enjoyed are certainly worth purchasing the book. It's tough to give the entire book an overall rating because of the spectrum of individual ratings for the parts.
My Rating (for the entire book): B, Liked It Review copy provided by Author Originally posted at That's What I'm Talking About

My opinion:
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine
It was well written and heartbreaking .... i don’t see how you could remain unmoved by this story Rachel Caine really did well but for me it was too sad. So far she is the author i have the less affinities with so i’m not surprised if i don’t connect too much with it.
The story speaks about racism too and in a such a way that you are not really sure of what time it... of course you have element showing it’s the past but it done in sucha way that you really can imagine it still done now in some place of the word and that’s probably what makes it unsettling. It’s not my favourite short stories but mostly because ofthe topic and ending and how it left me. I must precise that this was REALLY wonderfully written.
Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden
This was a novelty for me as i didn’t read this author before even if i do have at least one of her book in my TBR pile. In this short story about vampire and PI i really liked to be surprised as the author manages to maintain the doubt until the end. It was well built and Mick is an inetresting Heroe, i liked how he wanted to stay honorable and all.
So very good reading time.
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart
Another new author to me and new series of course. The good point is that you can absolutely read this without prior knowledge. If you are one of those who don’t like to read about demons and angel you should probably pass this one but if you have an open mind this is an interesting story. I don’t think i would follow up this series though but as a try it was good
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson
I LOVE IT!!! Suzanne Johnson never disappointed me but this is simply fabulous, even if you have never heard of her series you can follow this easily and it just leave you wanting for more.
You have the action, humour some suspense and romance... just perfect I really liked Liandra, she is only half fae but she is strong willed and intelligent and couregous. Faulk... i just want to read more of him and his team it’s a wonderful treat that works wonderfully aside from the main series but i do hope we will see more of the characters we met here either in other shorts or in the main series but i want more^^
Heat’s Blood by Jeffe Kennedy , a Twelve Kingdoms novella
Oki this is my last liked in the anthology... it’s not bad written or anything, quite the opposite even but it’s not my cup of tea at all... i don’t like cruelty towards animals ( fae or not) or unjustified violence.... If only the vilains got what he/ she deserved but i didn’t feel as it was the case. Some how i would have wanted the fae‘s wrath to apply judgement or something... i’m definitively not ready for the series after reading this, like i said it’s not bad written simply it’s not for me at this time. I reassure you it has an happy ending but i ‘m still upset days after reading it so better if i put it aside for a time
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan, a Djinn World novella
I loved this one as well. I had read and loved other works by this author but nothing about her stories with Djinn and now i really want to read those ( part of me want to see a certain revenge well deserved)
This novella is a little difficult to tell you about without spoiler but if you are new to her Djinn universe like i am don’t fear you will be swept by the story really easily! It’s engaging, mysterious and so well written. There is romance, action, tension and a lot more
You will love Ash and Dalhia story i’m sure if you love magic, witches, djinn and want a good romance.

Read the blurb on this one and I was tantalized by the fact that these are not going to be white-hatted heroes and black-hatted villains, but people with flaws, weaknesses, strengths, and maybe a bit of redemption. Dark, gritty and intense- I'm so in the mood.
It's an anthology so I'll take each story separate with some quick thoughts as I go.
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine 5 Stars In the spirit of the hard-boiled detective stories of the past set in the 50's, this was one I couldn't put down. Warren Valentine, the private detective who just lost his partner, reluctantly agrees to continue her case because it is his murdered partner's ghost who makes the request. Vivid, authentic narrative voice and gritty atmosphere and setting along with a lost love make this one a most satisfying read.
Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden 4 Stars A Private Investigator and a lady vampire hunt for a killing vampire together. But the lady vamp has secrets, too. Another solid story that captivated from the get-go. Felt more paranormal than noir, but still worked as a good mystery that kept me unsure to the end.
Dance With the Devil by Megan Hart 4.5 Stars Now this is a riveting tale. A woman who must do every devilish task because he owns her soul. Then she falls in love and the cost of keeping Jake may be too high. It's not pretty, but it is a compelling story or a cleaned up, romanticized Devil. Engaging to the last surprising scene. Now I want to read the earlier story, Ride With the Devil.
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson 4.5 Stars A Hunt Club Novella/World of the Sentinels of New Orleans
A lovely, innocent fae girl ends up in the middle of a power struggle in the fae court and it is only the Captain of the Fae Hunters sent to bring her in that can save her from a cruel fate. This was my first time experiencing the Sentinels of New Orleans world and it will not be the last. Engaging story! Love the characters especially.
Heart's Blood by Jeffe Kennedy 4 Stars Story of the Twelve Kingdoms
A sorrowful tale of an innocent, young princess forced to switch places with her betraying handmaiden and watch her betrothed, Prince Cavan, accept the deception.
This one was an interesting blend of coarseness and fantasy, gentle love and lust, betrayal and honor. I definitely want to read the other stories in the Twelve Kingdoms series, now.
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan 4 Stars A Djinn World story
A Cinderella story of sorts. Dahlia is in the control of her evil step-father, a powerful blood witch, and her only hope is to call out the djinn in the mirror to protect her in exchange for his freedom. Ashmael is bitter and distrustful, but agrees to the deal for the chance to be free and maybe exact some revenge. He soon realizes that Dahlia is an innocent and he has a strange desire to protect her.
I enjoy stories in the author's djinn world. This one was intense in the dealings in the human world, but left things open-ended toward the situation in the djinn world. I would like to know what comes of that.
All in all, this was a fantastic set of stories. I loved the variety and creativity. The authors had a great sense of tone, setting, plot, and characters. I look forward to pursuing more stories from this group of mostly new to me authors. I would recommend this anthology for those who enjoy darker, grittier paranormal romance.
My thanks to the authors for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautiful story that will bring out the range of emotions when reading it. A lot of your favorite authors are in this box set. Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine---- PI Valentine is a guy who does the right thing despite being SO cynical . He is on the lookout for who killed his partner Tilde. This is a loss that hits him very hard. Think film noire- I did need some tissues for this story—My rating: 4.2 stars **** Femme fatale by Cynthia Eden---- Vampire Savannah needs the help of PI Mick-but first she has to convince him vampires are truly out there before he will help her. It is a paranormal action story with some erotic elements. Great short story yet the picture painted is great-one of the best in the box set . This is a wonderful author and one on my auto buy list. My rating: 4.5 stars **** Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart--- Kathleen´s made a deal with the Devil and can´t turn him down no matter what he requests. When she meets the one man who makes her happy and one man she doesn’t want to let go, who does she put first—Jake or the devil? This was an interesting story but wow, that devil is one cruel man—this was a very cruel story. My rating: 4.0 stars **** The consort by Suzanne Johnson----- A fae running from a fae prince. This is an reinterpretation of the Goose Girl fairy tale—this is a good story and I liked this author’s take on that fairy tale - The Prince and Nix definitely had that chemistry which is important to a story. My rating: 4.1 stars **** The djinn in the mirror by Mina Khan---- Dahlia is almost of age to get ownership of the home her mom left her BUT her evil stepfather doesn’t plan to hand it over and is prepared to do whatever it takes to prevent her from getting it. When Dahlia finds out what he is trying to do, she learns there may be someone willing to protect her she is suddenly taken captive by Ashmael who is a very sexy Djinn. Will she be able to work out a deal with him to go free or will she forever be held captive? This is such a fantastic story. One of my favs in this box set…I would highly recommend reading this story because it paints such a vivid picture… *A gifted copy was provided by the publisher for my honest review*
This is a solid anthology of quality stories. All the authors were new to me except Caine and Khan, so it was a great chance to sample some authors I've been meaning to try.
All the stories are considered urban fantasy and there are varying degrees of romance depending on the story. They all have a dark edge to them, some darker than others, but they all have happy ever afters.
Marion, Missing is a noir mystery set during the segregation period, and. P.I. Valentine is a white man and his P.I. partner is Tilde, a black woman. Caine does a great job of touching on the racial tensions of the times and expressing Valentine's deep guilt and eventual forgiveness of himself.
Femme Fatale isn't as complex, and not as dark as the others. It is pretty straightforward with some dark humor.
Dance With the Devil delivered the darkest emotional punch. The plot kept you guessing and your heart will break right along with Kathleen. I was worried there was no way this one could turn out happy, but Megan Hart pulled it off.
The Consort had the most humor and romance. I love fae stories and have always wanted to read Suzanne Johnson's series. It is the world building that attracts me (and sexy fae men, duh!) and this story delivered.
Heart's Blood had a horror element to it. I loved the contrast of the innocence of Nix and Prince Cavan pitted against the evil of Princes Natilde. Well told with a heavy fairy-tale feel.
The Djinn in the Mirror has me wanting to find a magical mirror with my own djinn! Great mixing of an urban setting and djinn mythology. Ashmael is toe-curling sexy and Dahlia is an underdog heroine you can root for and be very jealous of...
At $.99 you would be a fool not to grab this one. Whether you love urban fantasy or PNR, you will find something to love in each story.
Six amazing stories by six amazing authors. There isn’t a bad one in the bunch. MARION, MISSING by Rachel Caine is a noir detective story with a bit of a ghost tale in it. This takes place during segregated times in America but points out that things haven’t changed as much as we would like. Fantastic story. FEMME FATALE by Cynthia Eden is a more modern day private eye story dealing with the question of how much can you trust a vampire. Fun read. DANCE WITH THE DEVIL by Megan Hart tells what happens when you make a deal with the devil. Not the type of story I usually read but I thoroughly enjoyed it. THE CONSORT by Suzanne Johnson deals with the Faerie. This story deals with an unjust tyranny and how love may just be the strongest power anywhere. A good read. HEART’S BLOOD by Jeffe Kennedy, a Twelve Kingdoms novella can be read stand alone. This story had you rooting for injustices to be righted and the princess to get her guy. A wonderful fairytale. THE DJINN IN THE MIRROR by Mina Khan, a Djinn World novella. This may have been my favorite story in the bunch (not that there were any bad ones). Ashmael the djinn is rightfully pissed about having been betrayed and forced into a mirror for hundreds of years. When the opportunity to become free comes will he grab it? At what cost? These six stories will entertain and make you think and introduce you to some fantastic worlds. I wholly recommend this box set. A gifted copy was provided by author/publisher for an honest review
Six authors – six stories – all different – all well written!
Marion Missing by Rachel Caine caught me and kept me till the very end. Set in a real place in the past when things were different but love was still love no matter who those in love might be. This one, for me, was the most Noir with touches of horror added in.
Femme Fatale by Cyntia Eden is a vampire short story with plenty of twists and turns and a rather surprising finale. Very enjoyable read.
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart had me thinking and feeling and those qualities in a book are ones that raise its value in my estimation. Another intriguing story.
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson took me back to the days when I read fairy tales and never could find enough of them to read. That said, this is more of an adult than a child but oh so fun to read! I wonder what might happen in the rest of the series...if there is one.
Heart's Blood by Jeffe Kennedy is another fairy tale based perhaps on the Goose Girl. This one was well done but not my favorite.
The Djinn in the Mirror by Mina Khan had witches, a coven/commune, evil aplenty, dastardly doings, action and interactions. It was entertaining but I do wonder what happens in the world of the Djinn after Ash leaves.
Great anthology! Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Digital Services for the copy of this book to read and review
Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock, I was gifted my copy for review.
Not all is as it seems in this 6 book box set. I love books that turn to the darker, grittier side. Books with twists that pop out of nowhere. Variations to traditional fairy tales. Vampires, ghosts, the Fae and the Djinn. Love them all and they all appear in this set.
I didn't read Dance with the Devil, because I did not like Kathleen, the main character. But I read the rest.
Two stand out.
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine.
Set some time ago, there is a great deal of prejudice in this book. Its just the time that its set in, that's all. I did not see that twist coming at the end, nope, that was so NOT the way I saw it going!!
The Djinn in the Mirror Mina Khan.
Not so much a twist, just how it played out. We knew the step father was evil, just not HOW bad he was.
All in all, a great bundle by some new to me authors that has added some books to my ever growing want to read pile!
But be warned, Nothing is black and white, nothing is as it seems and magic and mayhem rule.
4.5 stars for the entire set.
**same worded review will appear on Goodreads, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com**
This anthology took me by surprise. Why you ask? Because I liked every single one of them, even the fae story by Suzanne Johnson and I’m not that much into fae.
Every one of them were quick to read. And a little dark, exactly like the title promised.
If you are in the mood of a short story collection of different authors or if you want to find some new authors of the paranormal romance genre, I recommend that you give Dark Secrets a try.
I know I will look up the other books written by all these authors.
Overall I really enjoyed this anthology, as I was introduced to some new-to-me authors that I may just have to pick up their series. I've broken down my thoughts on each novella below. Please note I won this ARC from one of the authors during a newsletter giveaway.
Missing Marion I enjoyed this noir detective drama with paranormal aspects. I found the mystery of how his partner died and the links to the missing girl fascinating. Although it was period appropriate, the racism was rampant and disconcerting - but it is as it should be. It should make us uncomfortable, it was horrible and the atrocities allowed were shameful and horrifying. Although it was a bittersweet ending, I did overall enjoy the story of loss, redemption and love. I give this story a 4 star rating.
Femme Fatale This was another private eye drama, but a little different than the previous. Though the romance between the characters moves swiftly, I can understand it due to the mythology (though not directly stated, implied) of those with the right DNA being able to be turned into vampires. I can understand the connection and draw between them. The plot is gripping though the twists were a bit murky. I liked the final twist at the end, though it was very surprising. I give this story a 3 star rating.
Dance With the Devil At first I thought this may have been the weakest story, but ended up being one of the strongest. It starts slow and it is a bit muddled, but as it progresses, the tension and mystery slowly ramp up. I found this one to be one of the hardest to put down. It was very thought provoking, engaging and tension-filled. Kathleen's life is tragic, but one she accepts because it was her choosing, however not all it what it seems, especially when dealing with the Devil. I loved this heartbreaking story, though a bit gruesome in places, it was a hauntingly beautiful tale of love, loss and redemption. The ending was a great twist and I thoroughly enjoyed the resolution. I give this story a 5 star rating.
The Consort Another fascinating look in an on-going series (though it is not stated) it stands-alone well. It moves quickly and although I was disappointed in how quickly the romance moved (though it is totally logical), it still was a good story. What helps is that they knew each other from their youth. I found the world compelling, the different "royal" elves being at odds, the politics and mythology was fascinating. Lia being caught in the middle and Faulk being torn between duty and love was compelling. Overall I enjoyed the story, the resolution appearing simple, though it will have ramifications I'm sure. This is a series I would like to pick up and read. I've the story a 4 star rating.
Heart's Blood First, I must say I am a fan of the Twelve Kingdoms series and it was the main reason for me wanting this anthology. That being said, I found this story to be one of the most heartbreaking to read but with such a honest and happily/hopeful ending. The cruelty that Nix suffers from the traitor and her courage to try to protect those she loves and claims was heartbreaking and horrifying. Watching her personal growth was staggering as she goes from a cossetted princess stripped of everything to an empowered protective woman was amazing. Nix's character truly reminded me of the line from the latest Cinderella movie (the live-action), "have courage and be kind". Though she suffers horribly, she never loses her innate kindness that is a noble quality. I wasn't sure how Nix was going to turn her circumstances around, but I was surprised by the ending. I give this story a 5 star rating.
The Djinn in the Mirror I was nervous at first for this retelling of Cinderella, but thankfully it is only loosely based, allowing the story to take on its own feel. However, I still feel it was the weakest of the offerings. Dahlia at first was very innocent though how she has survived that way is almost unbelievable considering how evil her stepfather is. I can understand being hopeful and making the most, but she struck me as a bit too naive considering the world and her environment. The love story between her and Ash moved very fast, too fast for my tastes and the interlude and secondary plot of Ash and his vendetta (that is introduced and never resolved in this story) irritated me and interrupted the flow of the main story. Though it was interesting how the story resolved, it was not all that surprising. I give this story a 3 star rating.
Overall this was a very enjoyable anthology and I now have a few new-to-me authors to pick up and try.
In a Flutter: Kickass anthology! Review I loved this anthology so, so much! The stories were diverse both in tone, paranormal/fantasy elements, and sorts of HEA they presented. They were all romantic, some sweet, some somewhat tragic but ending with togetherness, if you know what I mean. Some of the authors were new to me, though they are popular names. I’m glad I got to know their writing in this anthology, because I loved all of their works enough to really want to read more by them now.
MARION, MISSING by Rachel Caine It’s no secret I love detective stories, investigators of all sorts are probably my fav characters. I loved Val and Tilde, their connection in a time when it wasn’t as natural as it seems today. This story pulled at my heart strings the most, because despite the togetherness at the end of the story, it’s more of a tragic love story than a straightforward happy ending. I loved it all the more because of that.
FEMME FATALE by Cynthia Eden Mick and Savannah made a seriously hot couple, with stellar chemistry and a delectable vampire romance with a bit of a twist. Mick, a PI, Savannah an awesome vampire temptress looking for company – they made for hot, exciting, and romantic reading.
DANCE WITH THE DEVIL by Megan Hart This was among my favorites from the anthology. I am partial, I know; Kathleen is an accomplished author, and a fantastic character if you ask me. Jake was interesting too, but I won’t lie, the clear star for me was Kathleen, and I loved the role the Devil played, lol. Which sounds ominous, and it partially is. The story had me wondering and pondering until the very end, which I loved so, so much. I felt Kathleen and Jake were a touching, charismatic pair.
THE CONSORT by Suzanne Johnson I love the world of the Sentinels of New Orleans, and I’ve read stories set in this world and enjoyed them. This one didn’t take my heart fully, for some reason. Sweet romance, surely one of the reasons, characters not as tortured as I tend to like them. I’m an openly evil reader, and sweet generally doesn’t do it for me. That’s a matter of personal taste, though, and the story had everything right, if you ask me, just not what it takes to make me personally swoon. I enjoyed it, but I wasn’t totally in love, you know?
HEART’S BLOOD by Jeffe Kennedy Again a world I’m familiar with, the most familiar with comparing with the rest of the authors/worlds of this anthology. The Twelve Kingdoms world is an exquisite fantasy world, full of tension, intrigue, and all sorts of love stories. I enjoyed this one, Nix was great and noble, and Cavan was interesting. I wanted their HEA and was thrilled when it happened. Also, big love for poor Falada – I kind of felt like crying there, sigh. I wanted to kick the hell out of that horrible woman pretending to be Princess Natilde. Jeffe Kennedy has the awesome ability to build very realistic characters, and that includes villains, antagonists. You feel the burning desire to choke them to death, lol. I surely felt it :D
THE DJINN IN THE MIRROR by Mina Khan I really loved this baby too! Dahlia and Ash were both charming characters, very charismatic, interesting, easy to relate to. They had great chemistry and, I won’t lie, I loved the presence of a certain cat sidekick too :D I always love sidekicks, what can I say?
All in all, this was an amazing anthology. I think some are reticent about anthologies, as I am sometimes, because they mean short stories. These ones were pretty good lengths though, if I may say so :D Novellas, not short stories. So read this baby. It’s totally worth your time!
Valentine is a detective. He is also facing two problems. He has been offered a kidnapping case that his partner refuses to let him say no to and the case has a strong chance of getting him killed. Femme Fatale by Cynthia Eden

Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart

This is an anthology of paranormal stories that veer to the darker end of the spectrum. I normally tend to steer clear of the short story genre but when I saw that Rachel Caine had the lead story in here I decided to jump straight in.
Marion, Missing is a great story. Valentine is a detective. He's offered a kidnapping case that is likely to get him killed but his partner won't let him turn it down. And since he blames himself for his partners death and she is a ghost there really is no choice. This is one of the darker stories in the book and Valentine is a great character. I'd love to read a full length book about these people.
Femme Fatale is a vampire story that doesn't really tick all the boxes for me. Savannah just seems to be a bit too hackneyed and I afraid that I found myself speed reading through this one.
Dance With The Devil had a fairly interesting take on the selling your soul to the devil scenario. Kathleen and Jake were good characters and it was a good read.
The Consort was one of the stories that failed to connect with me at all and I've read a lot of fae stories. Guessing I'd have enjoyed it more if I'd read the other stories written in that Universe.
Heart's Blood is a very dark retelling of the traditional story of The Goose Girl. It doesn't do a great deal to change the way you think about that kind of story but it was a fairly easy read.
The Djinn in the Mirror is another retelling of a fairytale with a Djinn instead of a fairy godmother! It was dark but fun and a good way to finish off the book.
For me this was worth reading just for the Rachel Caine story but I'm now a bit more curious about some of the other authors and I'll have to seek out some full length books by them as well.
Supplied by Net Galley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Caine's Marion, Missing was a solid, enjoyable mystery noir read about a hard-boiled detective in the forties looking into the murder of his black female partner. It was the best of the anthology by far. Actually, it didn't quite fit with the other stories; and was very much a higher quality read than the other stories.
The rest were a mixed bag. Eden's Femme Fatale was enjoyable, but a little too similar to her other vampire stories. Johnson's The Consort fared a little better, but was a lighter read taking place in her "Sentinels of New Orleans" world. The Megan Hart offering, Dance With The Devil was very much in her usual style of writing; probably best appreciated by her fans.
The other two failed to pique my interest; but I may come back at a later time to revisit one or both.
This collection of noir tales is absolutely riveting. If I could give it higher than a 5 star I would, that's how much I'm loving these dark and twisted tales of love, hate and the paranormal. Marion Missing was a page turning masterpiece and reminded me of a movie I saw when I was a kid-blood paintings and a crazed painter. Only this time it was in the modern trappings of noir fiction. Each and every story in this anthology is a dark pearl you are going to love to discover. Just make sure you don't have to be at work early the next day because you won't want to turn the lights out...
6 paranormal novella that you will enjoy. I have read several of these authors and will look for more books by the new authors. There are ghosts, vampires, djinns, and witches, a wonderful eclectic collection. Short enough for a quick read but long enough to give you a satisfying story. Authors include Rachel Caine, Cynthia Eden, Megan Hart, Suzanne Johnson, Jeffe Kennedy and Mina Khan.
This anthology grabs your attention from the beginning and holds on tight. Each of the stories offers something different, has it's own darkness, and leaves you thinking. An excellent collection that's going on my keeper shelf. I know I'll be reading these stories again.
Finally got to read all the stories by my co-contributors and I'm so impressed. Five stars for everyone else! (Just skip my story and read the others. :-) )
This is an awesome anthology with some heavy hitting authors. I love most of them, and the few I hadn't read before I will now.
Marion, Missing by Rachel Caine
This was such an interesting, dark, gritty story with racial prejudices, a little torture, and the broken bad boy who has sins finally finding not only his goodness but finding his love even if it's a little too late. A wihite PI goes on the search for the killer of his black partner in a time that woman and blacks didn't have the best treatments. There's so many prejudices. And when a horrible killer is torturing and dismembering black woman, he knows something is connected and he's on a mission to catch him. Valentine is the hero who isn't always the nice good guy, but more broken, jaded, anti-hero. He doesn't want to be a hero. He just wants to catch his partner's killer. It's not a light hearted happily ever after. It's dark, and haunting, and beautifully broken. I seriously had my heart hurt for this one.
Femme fatale by Cynthia Eden
This one is the vampire story of the set. Mick Swayne is a PI, which when Savannah the vampire walks into his office not only blows his mind with the supernatural, but turns him lusty. LOL He's still a good PI and the bad guy is predictable. It was a fun story but not quite as fun for me, maybe only because it felt predictable.
Dance with the Devil by Megan Hart
This one was the most surprise, and yet most heart breaking story of them all. Like wow. A woman sold her soul to the devil for a dream. And with that dream she lost so much. Her husband has custody of her kid, she has fame and fortune. She is known and loved for her books, but she is alone and lonely at the same time. And she must do the tasks for the devil because it's that or lose her soul completely and forever to him. There is some serious plot twists that about made my jaw need to be screwed back on and duck taped for support. This is one of the most emotional stories of the set as well.
The Consort by Suzanne Johnson I of course love this author!! And we are now learning more about the fae from DJ's world! Hunters are big and bad but princes are freaking creepy! But one prince is the lesser evil. So there's a new drama unfolding with what's going down and I'm absolutely thrilled to see where this will go!! I loved the characters the story, everything!! But I always do when it comes to Ms Johnson!
The last two reviews are coming soon. I know I know, I'm still behind!!
This was a really great mix of stories. There is a little bit of everything here, and it all has a bit of a dark twist to it. While not all are technically romances (it doesn't claim that either) they all have an element of a love story and a few do have the HEA we all love.
Marion, Missing: Old school noir detective story - but with a ghost. This was a good old fashioned PI that was determined to find his bad guy. Did it help that he was just a little in love with the ghost that asked him to take the case? Maybe. A really great story with very subtle paranormal elements. Even non-paranormal readers will really get into this one.
Femme Fatale: This one was a lot of fun. A vampiress hires a PI to protect her and find out who is giving vampires a bad name by leaving bodies all over the place. This one gets a little complicated as two of the main characters have different stories to tell. You will be left guessing up until the very end to try and figure out who is really the bad guy in this one. Lots of action and intrigue.
Dance With the Devil: What does selling your soul to the devil really mean? There's a definite twist on the tale in Dance With the Devil that I absolutely loved!!! Kathleen has been doing the devil's bidding for years - afraid that she will lose everything she has if she stops. But things aren't always what we think and be prepared for quite a surprise ending on this one.
The Consort: While I loved the world concept in this one, the story fell a little short compared to the rest. There were a lot of dynamics that I don't think I was able to pick up on in the short novella form that I would have liked to be there. The story is definitely romantic, with Faulk willing to put his life and people on the line to save Liandra from becoming, well, basically a sex slave to a seriously creepy guy.
Heart's Blood: This is definitely the darkest of the stories, but it was also one of my favorites. Not only does it deal in love and romance, but it tackles the concept of individual identity and what it really means to honor a vow. I loved every word - even the ones that had me sitting there with my mouth hanging open in shock at how horrible the pretend Princess is. Nix may seem like a wilting flower at first, but she is one of the most powerful female characters I've read - and she gets there in just a short novella!!! I may be buying this entire series very very soon.
The Djinn in the Mirror: Djinns - you gotta love the tricky creatures. It helps that they seem to fall in love with human women just when she needs them the most. This was the sweetest of the stories, but still had some definite dark moments (the cellar near the ends still makes me shudder). A really great twist on Cinderella. At times I didn't realize I was in the modern world, the characters were kept so away from everything that they almost existed in a time unto themselves. I loved our little glimpse into the Djinn world and a taste of all the intrigue and politics there as well.
