FBI Special Agent Adam Blackwell is desperately trying to save his marriage, even taking leave from the Hostage Rescue Team to give wife Summer his undivided attention. They’re just starting to make progress when both end up in Amman, Jordan on separate work assignments. Shortly after they make a dinner date for the evening, Summer and two members of her team are abducted by a terrorist cell whose leader has a reputation for unspeakable cruelty. The countdown is on as Adam and his team are called into action to find and retrieve Summer before her certain execution for propaganda purposes.
Before this story, we didn’t know much about Summer beyond her name and just a tad more about Adam, mostly his desire to save his marriage. I absolutely loved the use of flashbacks as a device here because it was done so skillfully, beginning with their first meeting all the way up to their days before they left for Amman. The timing of the transitions between the past and present day and the pivotal moments selected were done with precision, made even more meaningful given the dire circumstances. I actually didn’t think I’d like Summer, who turned out to be a fantastic character. She was smart, resourceful and believably courageous. Her ability to push through her fear was genuine, something I could relate to and embrace.
I loved everything about this story! I found myself rooting for Adam and Summer after discovering what wrenched them apart and his efforts to win her back. The pace was breakneck and I could empathize with Adam’s agony as time slipped away without them finding Summer. Typical for this series was an exciting, pulse wrecking climax that went down to the wire. And, it was capped off with a lovely epilogue. I keep saying this after every book but THIS one is now my favorite.
Adam and Summer have been a mystery so far in this series. We’ve only gotten snippets of them here and there and Summer has never socialized with the other wives/girlfriends and Adam hasn’t really been a main player in any of the recent ops. We knew their marriage was in trouble but that’s about it. I was so ready to get the details that I dove into this right after Betrayed. This opens with Summer and Adam in Jordan, she for work and him for a protection detail. They meet briefly, plan a dinner date for that evening, but then Summer and her boss and co-worker get ambushed and are taken hostage by a terrorist group. From here on it gets wild with three separate story lines going on. Through a series of flashbacks we see a timeline of Summer and Adam’s first meeting and heartbreaking events that led to the deterioration of their marriage; Summer and her time in captivity ( the weakest part of the story and I had a few eye rolling moments ) and then the Team in a race against the clock to complete the rescue. This was hold your breath, edge of your seat action and Adams desperation to save her was front and center. I loved this and I believe this is my favorite of the series. 5 stars
Kaylea Cross is an author who knows how to write a truly enthralling story. She has all the necessary elements and avoids the endless repartition that so many authors use just to pad their pages. You'll find none of that here, just beginning to end, a fast paced, engaging story that will keep you reading non-stop to the wonderful conclusion.
It was love, or at least really like, at first sight. But Summer and Adam all to soon discover that sometimes love isn’t enough. These two had careers that kept them apart more that brought them together and when Summer suffered the miscarriage of the baby she desperately wanted, Adam wasn't there. The marriage was hanging by a thread when Adam decides that Summer is worth fighting for with everything he has to fight with.
As Adam and Summer work their way back to each other they find themselves in Amman Jordan for a security conference. When Summer and two co-workers are kidnapped, Adam is suddenly aware that he may never see her again and is devastated, but determined to do whatever it takes to get her back alive. Summer is just as determined to survive and she is not going to let anything, or anyone, keep her from returning to Adam.
Please note this book includes frequent references to fertility complications, multiple miscarriages and also includes an on page scene of the Heroine experiencing a stillbirth and dealing with the subsequent depression.
RECLAIMED finally brings us Summer and Adam's story and it was definitely an emotional one. Up to this point we haven't really known why these two were struggling in their marriage only that Adam is still very much in love with Summer and wants to save his marriage. What's interesting in this book is that it's not really the story of a developing relationship, it's not really even about Summer and Adam falling in love with each other again. Instead, it's about two people who still love each other and will do anything for a second chance after Summer is kidnapped. In fact, Summer and Adam spend about 90% of the present day parts of the book apart, though frequent flashbacks show us how they met, fell in love, and started to fall apart.
Because of this I feel like the majority of my rating is for the absolutely nail biting, can't put this book down suspense. I binged this book in one sitting, staying up until 2am to read because I had to know what would happen next. I've always loved the way Kaylea Cross writes the suspense in her books and this was no exception. I was completely ensnared. I still loved Adam and Summer and their story was emotional, heartbreaking, and beautiful in the way they never gave up on each other, but it didn't feel like other romances because the love was already there. That's not a complaint by the way, just a statement of my feelings.
Either way, this was certainly a fantastic way to end the series and with the introduction of Brody Colebrook, I'm excited to jump into the COLEBROOK SIBLINGS Trilogy.
Content Warning: References to and on page scenes of a stillbirth and the subsequent depression; graphic scene of torture/death by fire
Emotionally gut wrenching and I'll sure I won't have pleasant dreams tonight, but what an awesome end to the series. I wasn't sure I'd like Summer from the peeks we had been given of her in previous books, but I'm glad to say that I loved her, and Adam was sigh worthy as usual.
One of my favourite bits was seeing Maya (from the Bagram Series) pop up. We also get introduced to the hero of the new series. Can't wait to learn more about Brody
Amazing, emotional fabulous wrap up to the HRT series. I was anxious to get this one. I was so intrigued by the small snippets of this couple in the previous books.
I doubt I can do it justice but suffice it to say - Kaylea Cross is awesome. I totally felt the emotions of everything this couple had been through. It was so accurate in portraying the feelings of a married couple dealing with disappointment, depression, tragedy - and the helplessness when you want to make it all better for the person you love, but you just don't know how. I personally have experienced a miscarriage and clinical depression and was wowed by how close this mirrored some of my thoughts and feelings.
Summer and Adam fight FOR each other and their marriage. They do not just give up, or cheat or try to solve the issues with drinking. They are real. Summer has been through the wringer and goes through more than anyone should have too. The journey is tough but so worth it! I HIGHLY recommend this book. I highlighted way to many things to put here, but I will include a few samples.
Their last date had been nearly a month ago and it had been one of the best nights of his life. He couldn’t remember the last time they’d had that much fun together, and he knew she’d enjoyed herself too. The only downside was that they’d both returned home to their separate places with a raging case of sexual frustration. But the counselor had warned them not to rush back into having sex, so he’d put on the brakes that night and held firm, his only consolation that they were both suffering equally. In spite of all the emotional damage she was struggling to overcome, she still wanted him. That had to mean something.
“I still love you, you know,” he told her. As little as two months ago he would never have said it aloud because it made him feel too vulnerable, but over the past few weeks he’d realized that if he wanted her back, he had to lay it all out there and risk it all. If it all blew up in his face, well, at least he’d given it his best shot and gone down fighting. At his words the uncertainty in her eyes disappeared and a tremulous smile curved her mouth. “I still love you too.” But sometimes love isn’t enough. The thought echoed in his head and he immediately banished it. He was done with the whole sullen, nursing his wounded pride routine. The only thing that mattered was them. She was his and he was hers, period. He took his marriage vows seriously and he’d be damned if he was going to walk away from what they’d built together over the last decade. He wouldn’t let her leave here without another reminder. Adam rubbed his thumb across her chin. “We’re gonna make it, Summer. If we keep fighting for each other, then we’ll make it.”
“Summer. Where is she? Did you see her?” The guy grimaced, both hands covered in blood as he pressed them to his belly. He managed a shaky nod. “T-took her.” Panic roared through him. He squeezed harder, gave him a shake. “Who took her? Where?” “D-dunno,” the man managed, face contorting in pain. “It…happened t-too fast.” Eff! Adam released him and surged to his feet, refusing to accept that she’d been taken. Tuck and DeLuca jogged over, faces grim. “She’s not here?” Adam shook his head, his jaw so tight he could barely speak. “Attackers took her,” he managed to choke out, feeling sick. Panic gripped him, constricting the muscles in his throat. Gone. She’s gone and I have to find her, have to get her back.
“I swore to her I’d never let her down like that again. I promised I’d always be there for her after that.” And now, when she needed him more than ever and was facing the unthinkable at the hands of those animals, he wasn’t there. He. Wasn’t. There. He shook his head, refusing to accept it. “I’ve gotta find her. I can’t lose her or I’ll—” His throat closed up. Tuck got up and came over to lay a hand on his shoulder, his big hand gripping tight. “We’ll find her. And we’ll bring her home safe and sound.” On the verge of losing it, Adam dropped his face into his hands and sent out a silent prayer. A vow he’d die trying to uphold. I wasn’t there for you before. And it’s true that I don’t know what you went through back then. But I love you and I’m not giving up. So wherever you are right now, Summer, please hold on. I won’t stop searching until I find you.
She’d already overcome so much. She had to get through this and find her way back to Adam somehow. It made her think of his surprising reaction one day after a counseling session a few months ago, back when everything had looked hopeless. I’m not letting you go, he’d told her fiercely, holding both her shoulders as he stared into her eyes. Ever. I’ll fight for you, no matter how long it takes. I won’t ever give up.
But now she realized he had fought for her the whole time, at least in his own way. He’d stuck by her, giving her space to find herself again and he’d gone to counseling both alone and with her. He’d hung in there while she struggled and scraped and battled to drag herself out of the bottomless pit she was in and for the longest time hadn’t seen a way out of.
As the scalding hot water pounded down on his bent head and neck he stood there with his hands planted against the slick fiberglass walls and fought to clear his head. But all he could think of was Summer. That night at the drive-in he’d wanted so badly to take her upstairs to her apartment and finish what they’d started. But he hadn’t. Back then he’d thought they’d have plenty of time to get around to that; that the buildup and anticipation would pay off for them in the long run. Now it just seemed like a huge effing wasted opportunity. Maybe his last, to make love to the woman who meant everything to him. Aside from everything that had pulled them apart seemed like bulls*** now. He would trade places with her in an instant, give his life for her if it would set her free. Did she know in her heart that he was searching for her? That he wouldn’t give up? He wouldn’t leave Jordan without her. He was taking her home, no matter what. He just prayed it wouldn’t be in a body bag.
She wanted to live. She wanted to see Adam again, make a life with him again. She’d do anything for that chance, even if it meant selling her soul. As long as the chance at being reunited with him existed, then she would endure anything.
I've been waiting on bated breath for Summer and Adam's book and am not at all disappointed! Reclaimed is my official favorite of the incredible HRT series. Kaylea Cross' writing delivered a soul wrenching mix of love, desperation, depression, devotion and of course, her trademark teetering on the edge of your seat suspense.
Summer and Adam's love story is one of the very best I have ever read. Real, raw and so honest it brought me to tears multiple times, it is EVERYTHING an epic romance should be. I loved the inclusion of some of my favorite couples from past books as well. Their parts within Reclaimed added to the story in a fabulous way.
I cannot imagine any way that the HRT series could end better than with this book. I'm excited to delve into Kaylea Cross' upcoming books but I will definitely miss my HRT men and women.
4.5 Stars - Reclaimed is an adult romantic suspense thriller by Kaylea Cross and the 10th book in her Hostage Rescue Team series.
Sometimes love isn’t enough.
Reclaimed is an emotional, poignant second-chance love story, which focuses on the tragedies and heartbreak that lead to the deterioration of Adam and Summer Blackwell’s marriage and their fight to find their way back to each other. If you’ve read other books in this series then you’re aware that Adam is a member of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team—an elite group of top-tier operators who respond to major terrorist incidents throughout the United States and abroad—and Summer is an analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency who works on gathering information about terrorists—logistics, capabilities, funding.
The story begins in Amman, Jordan as intelligence officials from various agencies within the United States, along with their Jordanian counterparts, attend a massive multi-national summit to address the ongoing security situation in the region. Adam’s team is there acting as the personal security force for the director and other top officials of the FBI, while Summer is attending the summit on assignment with her DIA boss and another colleague. But when Summer’s convoy is attacked by radical Islamist-based terrorists, Adam and his team are called upon to locate and rescue the hostages before the kidnappers torture and publically execute their high value targets—including his wife—in the most heinous way imaginable.
As unfortunate as it is, the storyline is very relatable to today’s climate of terrorism and the suspense is edge-of-your-seat. An action-packed, emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end, Reclaimed is well worth the read!
This was, by far, my favorite of the HRT series. That comes as a surprise. I have to admit, when Blackwell was getting more "screen time" a few books ago, I was like, "who's he?". So going into this book I wasn't even sure I would like it. But yep. My favorite.
Summer and Adam Blackwell were going through hard times during their marriage. She had moved out and had papers drawn up for a separation (she hadn't given them to Adam though). Adam was determined to save his marriage but Summer didn't think they'd ever get back what they'd lost. She agreed to counseling however. In the mist of counseling and going on dates at their counselor's request, they both found themselves in the Middle East for work. Before you could blink an eye, Summer was kidnapped by one of the worst terrorist groups in the region and Adam was determined to get her back before it was too late.
I won't spoil what happened. Although it's no secret that Summer is rescued and a happily ever after is achieved. But what I will say is that this book had me more on the edge of my seat than any of the other books combined. I also loved how we took trips into the past to see how Summer and Adam met and exactly what heartbreaking things occurred in their marriage to drive them so close to losing one another.
The beginning of this book says that this is the last of the HRT series but I'm late to the game for reading so I know there are two more left. Bring them on!
OMG the best one by far. Keep the kleenex handy, you're gonna need them. I'm so glad that Summer and Adam finally got their story. It's heart breaking but well written. Summer and Adam's marriage is barely hanging on. After several miscarriages, their struggling to keep their marriage together. But when Summer is kidnapped, it's up to Adam and his team to rescue her before it's too late. Summer can't help but think that they have wasted so much time on the past and now she'll never get a chance to tell Adam that she loves him. Her only hope is that Adam can rescue her in time. Adam is hell bent on getting to Summer before the unthinkable happens. Failure is not an option. He still loves her and will not stop until he has her back in his arms. Not even a sandstorm will stop the rescue. But will it be too late?

Adam and Summer always made me curious. From the other stories, I knew they had a troubled marriage and he was always so tight lipped about it. Now having read their journey, it was gut wrenching for sure. It made me stop and think how hard it has to be for military couples. And in their case, both served differently.
Adam was amazing, he never gave up on his love for summer and their marriage. He truly suffered as much as she did. Summer, suffered a great deal as well not only physically but mentally... Though she did give up on their marriage.
Now, fate wood insert them both in a scenario that would truly test them and their love for each other.
***Trigger Warning for this book: very emotionally difficult scene and talk of a stillbirth.
This book is very good with lots of great suspense and action and great characters. There are some really emotionally deep and difficult things in this book. I did have trouble with the fact that besides Summer's deep grief over losing her child, she obviously had severe postpartum depression and although counseling was mentioned, there was no mention of medication help for her. Still, this is a very good book and does have a wonderful happily ever after ending.
The world is slowly opening up more to mental health problems, and I like to think we are becoming more sympathetic of the terrible trauma that those suffering have experienced and are fighting their way through. Summers suffering hit really close to home and I found this story very hard to read, but it was done faithfully and well. This story is heart wrenching but well worth reading.
Adam and Summer had been struggling with their marriage for awhile. Both love each other but sometimes it isn't always enough. I love that they were both willing to fight for the marriage. When a tragedy strikes, it may be what they need to find their way back together and get their HEA.
This book was a pretty enjoyable read! I felt like it was a bit heavier than the previous ones but summer and Adam were pretty solid and carried the emotional weight of the story well
Adam and Summer I had lots of tears as we read their story. It was a great story and learning how they met and what happened with wonderful but also made me cry. The team came together
The emotional ups and downs in this book will leave you exhausted. Summer and Adam have been through hell and have come out much better on the other side.
I finally finished this book. I must say, as the last installment for the series, I was disappointed. I have been reading this series from the first book and caught snippets of this couple and have been long awaiting their story. Kaylea's writing was stellar as usual. The character development was strong and the reader gets to fully understand the motivations and trials of the characters. It was heartbreaking going through the miscarriages with Summer.
My biggest issue was that the H and h spent the majority of the book apart. True, we got the flashbacks to tell their story but the present day interactions between them were such a small part of the book. I wanted to see them work through their issues together not in their heads miles apart. My other issue was the small part the other guys played. They went on the recon missions and their names were mentioned but the majority of the time it was n't meaningful interaction. The guys were riding in the car silently or clearing a location. I didn't get to see my favorite couples together like Ethan and Marisol or get a nice wrap up of their lives. Since the majority of the series happened over a relatively quick time period, it would have been nice to have the Epilogue 6 months to a year out with a glimpse of everyone.
Overall, it was a good book I would have liked to see a little more of the couples together.
Special Agent Adam Blackwell has been married to his lovely wife Summer for 9 years. Their marriage had seen lots of ups and downs and despite loving each other deeply, Summer lef Adam know that love wasn't always enough.
Adam wasn't about to let his wife go without a fight, he was willing to do anything for her even taks a leave of absence from the job he loved so much. Just as Summer was about to give Adam the answer she knew he had been waiting so long to hear. She and two members of her team got kidnapped by the terrorist cell they've been trying to destroy.
Adam and the HRT weren't not about to let anything happen to Summer and her team. The HRT sprint into action but they were hit with lots of obstacles, they never threw in the towel and neither did Summer.
RECLAIMED is the last installment in Kaylea Cross' HOSTAGE RESCUE TEAM series. This book had me on the edge of my seat just like the previous books did but the emotional ride was bigger than the others. Mrs Cross literally left the best for last.
Gonna miss the HRT men and their lovely significant others. Wishing this talented and amazing author all the best in her future endeavors.
