Wyatt Storme is his own man. An ex-NFL star with two tours of duty in Vietnam, Storme is a skeptical Thoreau-style hero who bolted to a life of solitude when he felt fenced in by life in the fast lane - he's funny that way. Some wise investments and the love of Sandra Collingsworth, a TV anchorwoman, have made the transition easier, allowing Storme to retreat to his Colorado mountaintop home, free to enjoy his semi-reclusive lifestyle or involve himself in quixotic enterprises. In Storme Front it's the latter. Fresh from his adventures foiling drug manufacturers in Dreamsicle, Storme finds himself reluctantly drawn into a web of murder, extortion, and high-level politics when he attempts to extricate longtime friend Matt Jenkins from an unsavory connection to a cadre of contraband gun merchants. Complicating matters is a dark secret from Storme's past that threatens to jeopardize his fragile relationship with Sandy - a relationship that Storme depends on to prevent his retreat into the darker side of his personality. Assisting Storme again is the enigmatic Chick Easton, a modern bounty hunter with a sideways worldview and a classified Vietnam dossier. Together they encounter some of the most powerful and predatory men in the Rockies (as well as some of the mountains' more interesting women), entertaining each other along the way with the biting, rapid-fire wit of two men who have seen too much without looking away - two men best described as nineties dropouts.
I got to be a part of a Book signing with Ripley and had to get the second book in his Wyatt Storme series. Full of hard boiled take no prisoners action. It’s a fun and swift action in the vein of Reacher and Snake Pliskin. I can’t wait to get the third one.
Not very often a book makes me laugh my head off but I was laughing so hard my husband gave me some strange looks!! The banter between two of the characters Wyatt and Chick was hilarious. Do not get me wrong this has a lot of seriousness in the story as well, it has to with dead bodies turning up, drugs, guns. There is more than enough to keep the thrills going, with plenty mystery, shootouts, punch-ups, blackmail and not forgetting the banter that goes on.
Wyatt Storme and his fiancee Sandra are amusing, I love the bickering that goes on between them, extremely realistic characters who you just cannot help but like.
This will keep you gripped to the end, do not to unravel the mystery till the end as the Author has this one in the bag and its not getting out early!!
I have to thank Brash Books & NetGalley for letting me read and review this in exchange for an honest review. Got to say I loved it from page 1 till the last page. This Author is now a firm favourite of mine.
Amazing entry in the Wyatt Storme series! Although I thoroughly enjoyed Ripley's first outing, Hail Storme, his writing is clearly stronger here. At times even poetic. My personal favorite lines from Storme Front would be first, while describing the Rocky Mountains his depiction of Denver is "a fungus of concrete and steel and road signs growing in a widening ring. Fingerprints at the edge of a masterpiece." Secondly, "purgatory, sometimes, is where memories live."
Additionally, I was happily shocked when Ripley allowed his already flawed character to be even more so with bad decisions. I hated seeing a character I've come to love do wrong things, yet I relish that he is given this ability for growth! Too many times we read stories where a beloved character DOESN'T do/say/act the wrong thing, because they are the hero. Sometimes that is just boring, and Wyatt Storme is never boring.
Storme Front has just been re-issued by Brash Books as an ebook and they provided me with a copy to review. This is the second Storme Thriller I have read, unfortunately not in order but it doesn't seem to matter one bit. The character, Wyatt Storme, is constant and consistently the same: irreverent, lethal, and able to out-think unsavory types when it comes to solving convoluted schemes in Colorado. And here I thought the wild schemes were reserved for the Arizona hinterlands. Apparently Colorado is filled with all manner of wildcats trying to scam their way to riches. They just never counted on Wyatt Storme coming to the rescue of his friends, who always seem to be peripherally caught up in these endeavors. The book is fun, fast and furious (and finally available as ebook.) I have another loaded up to read that's how much I enjoyed this one.
This is an entertaining book of fiction that was written in the 1990s. It features two devil-may care, wise cracking heroes who are champions of the oppressed. This book is the second in a series of five adventures featuring Wyatt Storme. Wyatt is the main character who is a disillusioned Vietnam vet and he is also a retired pro-football wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys who is apparently still essentially living off his football earnings. The other hero is Wyatt’s friend Charles “Chick” Easton, a more mysteries character who was some kind of Special Forces or perhaps CIA (?) assassin in Vietnam. Chick became disillusioned with his Vietnam experience and now, according to himself, he is the world’s best bounty hunter. These two live in Colorado and now become involved in investigations that help friends. In this case, their friend Matt Jenkins, who is a large cattle rancher, needs assistance for his niece’s fiancée. That boy is in trouble because he associates with a known drug dealer. That problem turns out to be just the tip of the iceberg as our investigators uncover multiple serious crimes as their investigation unfolds. In an effort to shield their friends (and extended families) from involvement with the police, Wyatt and Chick try to resolve things with minimal involvement of law enforcement authorities. It is quite an adventure with plenty of action, suspense, some humor and even some romance. Here is just an example of the humor you can expect as Wyatt and Chick proceed with their investigation. Since Matt Jenkins offers to pay Wyatt and Chick for their investigation work, when they depart from Matt’s home, Chick says to Wyatt: “So now we’re detectives, huh? Like Travis McGee and Lew Archer.” Wyatt responds, “More like Abbot and Costello.” So, if you remember the 1990s and references to 20th century icons; plus, what life was like was before cell phones and easy access to Google, you’ll enjoy this book.
I like my heroes to be human, you know, flawed and awesome at the same time. Wyatt Storme is definitely human. The plot line in this book was good while a bit confusing at times. The key characters charm and amuse me. Wyatt appears brooding but he is a reflective person by nature. He is an example of a written hero who becomes difficult to translate into a film. With a novel we understand the mind and perspective of a deeply reflective, yet reticent man. Trying to deliver this character minus the dialogue risks turning him into another two dimensional action star. It’s the reflective side of Wyatt that endears him to us. Action enough to turn pages, sexy enough for love and temptation, these novels bring me back again and again.
W.L. Ripley has written only 5 books - I have read all of them. His protagonist in the Wyatt Storme series is a retired football hero who is reminiscent of both MacDonald's Travis McGee and Parker's Spenser. The parallels between Storme and Spenser are innumerable. Both are witty, terse, and self-depreciating. Spenser has Susan and Hawk; Storme has Sandy and Elliot. If you are a fan of Spenser, you'll enjoy the Storme books.
Another great story by Ripley. Interesting characters and a fair amount of suspense and action. I didn’t like the protagonist quite as much in this second installment, but he was still entertaining nonetheless. Looking forward to reading/listening to the next one. J Rodney Turner is among the very best of all narrators.
Well written, but I found it hard to understand why the bad guys would not just kill Storme. Keeping him around that long just left them open to trouble. Most bad guys are not the smartest people in the world and tend to turn to violence first.
Another good combination of action, intrigue and humor
Ripley again spins a yarn with a host of bad guys, good guys and some ladies -- stirred with gun fights, knives, knuckles and quips. Enjoyed this one and can't wait to dig into the next Wyatt Storme adventure!
Storme Front, the second mystery in the series featuring former NFL player Wyatt Storme and his buddy, Chick Easton, is smart and sassy. Ripley proves that an action-packed thriller with a he-man protagonist is stronger, not weaker when it treats women respectfully, as equals to men. Thank you twice, first to Net Galley, and second to Brash Books. I received this DRC from them in exchange for an honest review. This title was released August 4, so you can get it right away.
When someone offers one a thousand dollars to make a single, simple delivery, it’s natural to be suspicious. But when it appears to also involve pulling a good friend’s cojones out of the fire, an experienced badass will sometimes agree, however cautiously, to tag along. So it is here. Drugs, guns, and bodies pile up, and all through it runs some kick-ass banter that made me laugh out loud a number of times. The exchanges are typically between Wyatt and Chick, but there’s some pretty strong humor, at times, in the interactions between Wyatt and his fiancée, Sandra Collingsworth, as well. As well as respect. I like the respect even better.
“No one likes smart, self-assured women, you know.” “Except you,” she said. “And I’m glad.”
Complicating the picture without making it into a soap opera is the involvement, however peripherally, of an old flame of Wyatt’s. They split up a long time ago, and she married the man whose afore-mentioned cojones Wyatt is trying to salvage.
“His wife?” said Billy, smiling. “Ain’t she a sweet piece of—“ “Her name’s Kelly,” I said, interrupting. “But you can call her Mrs. Jenkins.”
The action is linear in format, so the fairly sizeable number of characters doesn’t create confusion. Then too, Ripley’s memorable character sketches certainly help:
“Snakeskins came around the truck. He had a big face, crooked nose. About thirty. A little overweight. Too many Coors in cowboy bars. Blond mustache, untrimmed, and a diamond stud in one ear. His hands were immense.”
Oh, there are so many more memorable passages, and I highlighted 78 of them, just for giggles. But the fact is, I would just hate to ruin it all for you. All told, the flavor is a bit like Sue Grafton’s, but with male protagonists in Colorado.
The examples I’ve provided show up early on, but the pace never slows till the last page is turned. In the end, I just wanted to read the next book in the series. And so will you.
Highly recommended for mystery and thriller lovers, or for anyone that needs a snappy, amusing beach read.
This time we see a different side to Wyatt Storme. Is Storme a sexist? Hmmm maybe, but this makes his character more real because now for me he is flawed! So all I will say on it is; bad Storme for vehemently decrying early feminists, and somehow I have to forgive you.
Here is a man who will not; cannot let things go when his friends need help and ex Vets’ Wyatt Storme and his likeable ‘off the wall’ pal Chick Easton jump straight in with all adrenaline pumps running at high speed.
So this is about gun running, making wrong choices, old sweethearts with nasty surprises and messing things up with his finance, the lovely Sandy, big time. Ripley never makes it easy for me to even remotely guess what is going on or where it will end up and in that I was left in the same position as Storme himself.
There are some big players in this plot and some weasels too, one of which has to be given the benefit of the doubt. When a writer asks you to be accepting of someone who is clearly an asshole, he is playing with your head but somehow I was willing to try.
Best bits for me? I love how Ripley starts a story and draws me into Wyatt’s and Easton’s adventures because I just love these two pair of jokers together who fight like they are waging a war against injustices on their own. Cowboy boots, Jack Daniels and cigars sums them up for me. Again, I so enjoyed the style of humour between Storme and Easton that runs through every book in the series, and I am never disappointed.
Bits I was not sure about? I did get a little confused in the middle because there are so many players and so much going on (how on earth does Ripley keep track of it all as he writing!) but it all makes sense at the end.
All in all, I love this series of books, Ripley has me hooked because of his wonderful humorous style of writing combined with excitement and intrigue. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Many thanks to Brash Books and NetGalley for a copy of this kindle book.
I thoroughly enjoyed Storme Front - it's an easy read and the book is difficult to put down. Wyatt's close friend is in trouble, so he steps in to help out. His first meeting results in an ambush. His new employer and bodyguard are both killed; Wyatt barely escapes with his life. However, Wyatt now possesses the guns that the mob intended to purchases and $200k of their money. During their investigation, Wyatt, and his partner Chick uncover a crooked politician, a defiant mobster and a rogue CIA agent - all intent on killing them both to keep their master plan intact.
The banter and one-liners coming from these two friends will keep smiles on your face and at times and even cause you to laugh out loud. After Wyatt's close friend and a former football quarterback are both murdered, the twosome set out to make those who are responsible pay for it!
There are some twists and turns, especially in Wyatt's private life. His actions with his best friend's wife - now a widow - soon complicates Wyatt's relationship with his fiance. There are some surprises in store for readers, and we also learn about Wyatt's police associate, who reluctantly shares confidential information that helps each other out in the case.
I enjoyed the author's first book and this one and already have #3 loaded into my Kindle. I'm looking forward to reading it and following the further episodes of these two partners. Great job W.L. Ripley!
John Podlaski, author Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel
This is the second book in the Wyatt Storme action/adventure series, coming after HAIL STORME, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
1. HAIL STORME - originally published as DREAMSICLE
2. STORME FRONT - originally published as STORME FRONT
3. EYE OF THE STORME - originally published as ELECTRIC COUNTRY ROULETTE (coming in early 2016).
4. STORME WARNING - newly published in February 2015.
The first three books were originally released back in the 1990s.
I liked this second offering in this series from author Ripley just as much as the first. Wyatt Storme, ex-pro football player and Vietnam vet, teams up again with Chick Easton, ex-CIA spook. Their one-liners alone are worth the cost of the books.
This book takes place in Colorado rather than Missouri (Storme has cabins in both states) and he gets involved in a big time gun running operation. Add crooked politicians, bikers, Storme's sexy newscaster fiancée and thugs, thugs, and more thugs and you have another rip roaring installment in Storme and Easton's adventures.
I loved the story and I especially like the humor. The characters are well developed and I got to learn more of both the main protagonists' backstory.
I'm off to read STORME WARNING now.
NOTE: I received this book from Brash Books through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.
An Action Packed Thriller Involving Illegal Arms Trafficking and a Deadly Conspiracy
When Jackie Burlingame, arrives at Wyatt Storme's cabin in the Colorado Rockies, Storme isn't pleased. He doesn't like Jackie and being offered a thousand dollars to make a simple delivery smells. Storme wants nothing to do with it until he realizes that his good friend, Matt Jenkins, may be involved and in trouble.
Storme enlists his buddy, Chick Easton, to keep the delivery under surveillance and assist if necessary. It becomes necessary and Chick and Wyatt find themselves involved with crooked politicians, mobsters, and a deadly conspiracy.
If you like a book with plenty of action, this is it. Storme and Chick are in it up to their necks from the first page. There is no let up in the action, and it keeps you turning the pages.
However, the book isn't just action, the characters are well done. There are sassy, humorous exchanges between Chick and Storme and between Storme and his sexy, newscaster girlfriend that are fun to read. The plot is very complex and with all the twists it's hard to figure out what's happening until it all comes together at the end.
I recommend this book if you like hulking heroes, a little sex and plenty of action.
“Storme Front” is a unique novel. Nowhere else in fiction will you find a “hero,” Wyatt Storme by name, whose former lover has given birth to a son sired by the father of his current fiancée. Almost naturally, that former lover is married to a good friend who has gotten himself involved with a former CIA spook from the Vietnam war. By seeking to shield his friends, Storme finds himself mired in murder and illegal arms trafficking. Clear so far? Well, this Spillane-esque tale of guns, guys and dames is just warming up. Though a bit too long and convoluted, “Storme Front” delivers an entertaining story filled to the brim with mystery, fistfights, shootouts, and witty repartee. It's just the thing for those who need a jolt of testosterone.
I received a digital copy of this novel from Brash Books and NetGalley in exchange for this review.
Another great adventure with Wyatt Storme and his buddy, Chick. This one involves a crooked Congressman, illegal gun runners, blackmail, and several levels of duplicity. Everyone is true to form as the story plays out in Colorado. The level of description is just perfect, the action is paced just right, and the mysteries don't get unraveled until the very end. Once again the story is so intense that you can't put the book down.
Love reading Lee Child's Jack Teacher series? This series is just as good. I've already blown through half of these and am chomping to get to the next. Great as to read as a stand alone or to read in order. Hmmm...I wonder how will make a mistake in the next one. Besides, what will he do with the broken arrow? Sorry, would write more but I gotta go read the next book.
Mr. Ripely knows how to spin a story. He keeps you in suspense right up until the end. He uses the first 2 chapters to set up the story, and the play begins in chapter 3. I was certain who the "bad guy" was; however I kept changing my mind almost with every chapter I read. I really like how Mr. Ridley completes the story. He doesn't leave any holes that leaves you feeling you misses something.
If you like mysteries I highly recommend Storm Front.
Wyatt Storme and Chick Easton involve themselves in a gunrunning operation that goes very bad. From there, they just get deeper and deeper in trouble, and somewhere along the line, I think Storme goes crazy.
This is a rerelease of a thriller written in the early 90's. Here the protagonist is an ex-NFL pro and a VietNam vet. He is mouthy and full of himself as is his cohort. He is also tough and ready to take care of his friends the same way Travis McGee did. There is lots of action and great dialogue along with a complex plot. All in all, the kind of reading that keeps you up late.
Wyatt Storme rides again! Wyatt and his buddy Chick find themselves up against mob killers, corrupt congressmen, and assorted other baddies. Non-stop action, plenty of suspense, and superb repartee between Wyatt and Chick - what’s not to like!
Thank you to Brash Books and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.
That was a book to get your teeth into. So much going on and some really good characters. The structure of the story was excellent, keeping i9nterest and expectation high the whole way through. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
I think this book of Storme Front is as good of as of the last in this series. Great writing and some great human interaction make this book fun to read and looking for more.
This book has all the action that you want in a thriller and the humor just helps to keep the book rolling along at a fast pace. There are some twists here that really complicate issues and you just have to shake your head. Good read.
Great humorous story with well-developed characters. Looking forward to reading more in this series. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
