Before Hadley

Rate this book
Hadley can tell the minute she lays eyes on Caynan, the cocky new guy at school, that he's someone to avoid. He may have looks, charm, and the attention of every other girl in town, but he's also got heartbreak written all over his pretty face.

But what Hadley doesn’t know—what no one knows—is that with Caynan, things aren't at all what they seem.
His secrets have secrets and everything out of his mouth straddles the line between truth and fiction.

Caynan knows better than to get involved with anyone, especially with his time limited in the new town, but he just can't seem to get Hadley out of his mind. She's the one girl who doesn't want him. The one girl who's turned off by his charm. The one girl who challenges him like no other. And, though she couldn't possibly know the truth about him, she seems to be the one girl who really sees him.

Too bad for Caynan, secrets never remain secrets for long. And this one has the power to destroy more than just his life.

A modern day Romeo & Juliet

BEFORE HADLEY: is a slow burning romance, it's about love, deceit, betrayal, forgiveness and second chances..

Cayden the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks dating the detectives daughter Hadley

She's the one girl who doesn't want him. She's the one girl who's turned off by his British charm. She's the one girl who challenges him like no other. She's the one girl who sees right through him without even knowing his deep dark secrets. She's the one girl who made Cayden feel things he wasn’t used to feeling. She's the one girl he should keep well away from..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Cayden had been groomed by his father at a young age to commit numerous crimes the moment his mother passed away, his father convinced him they needed cash to pay for the numerous doctors bills, he had no choice, he controlled Cayden's life. Who they targeted, where they lived.

Anyone can see that mask you wear.

He was the type of guy my father warned me about, The type who drew too much attention. The type who caused girls to become irrational. The type who became bored easily.

Caynan is a ghost, he leaves nothing of himself behind as him and his father move from town to town, he has to lay low, stay off the radar. He didn't choose this life for himself, his father chose it for him.

This girl was the real deal. Sweet yet sassy. Confident yet vulnerable. If I wasn’t careful, she had the ability to make me feel things. Things a guy like me had no business feeling. Then I’d be fucked.

“We’d never been back to the same place twice. Just like Jacobsville one day. I’d never return.”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A boy who craves to be just like every other teenage boy, to play ball, to stay in one place to form true friendships, to not live a life of crime.

I needed friends, I needed girls, I needed sports to keep me sane in my insane world.

MY THOUGHTS
This book grabbed me hostage and never let me go, I loved the good girl, bad boy aspect of this story. What I wasn't expecting with this book was the depth and vast range of feelings that exploded in my heart whilst reading this, I loved Cayden's hard road to forgiveness, he rose above what cards he was dealt and made something of himself without allowing his past to define him, step by step he found pieces of himself again..

I loved, the feels, my heart literally broke for Cayden, I loved how real, raw, this book was..

Before Hadley is an amazing new adult romance. It has the precise blend of witty and flirty banter, sweet and oh so swoony moments that had me melting in a big puddle of goo, incredibly hot sexiness, and a beautiful story about finding oneself, hope, forgiveness and love.
“You are the only person who has ever given me hope. The only person who has ever shown me love. The only person who has ever given me all of herself and made me want to do the same.”

Hadley knows what she wants, she’s going to collage to follow her passion for art. She definitely knows she doesn’t want anything to do with the gorgeous new exchange student who can hit a baseball like a pro and has his pick of girls who are lining up to get a piece of him. Hadley can sense killer doses of player charm ooze out his every pore, she knows she should steer clear of him, but can she?
“I knew with every fiber of my being that Caynan Abbott would ruin me for all others. And when he finally kissed me, not only would it be explosive, but it would be something no one else would ever live up to. I was so screwed.”

Caynan is used to keeping things light and simple, without forming attachments because he knows he won’t stay in the same place for long, he knows he can never reveal his secrets. Then he literally runs into a girl who doesn’t want him, whose feistiness is an irresistible challenge that has arrested his mind. He knows it’s the worst possible idea to start a relationship he knows won’t last, but the way she sees to the heart of him without even knowing him makes him feel alive, happy and with something he hasn’t felt in a really long time, hope. But can there be hope is the truth ever came out?
“This girl was the real deal. Sweet yet sassy. Confident yet vulnerable. If I wasn’t careful, she had the ability to make me feel things. Things a guy like me had no business feeling. Then I’d be fucked.”

I really enjoy reading J. Nathan’s stories. Not only are they full of sweet angst but she has a writing style that makes me want to savor every single word, comma and period, and she doesn’t shy away from taking the story through its natural sad, raw realness and then giving us a wonderfully happy success story.
“There was no future for us. And Hadley was the type of girl who deserved an amazing future. Hell, she was the type of girl I’d see a future with if I actually had one of my own.”

I appreciate the strong heroines J. gives us and Hadley is definitely one of them. I loved her honesty and wit. I liked that she stood by her principals but also allowed Caynan to chip away her walls because with her, his true self shone even when he wasn’t being totally forthcoming.
“Being honest with someone was completely foreign to me. I’d never been able to be fully open with anyone before. Never been able to let anyone in. I wondered if Hadley was the one. The one I could actually be myself with. Because I really needed someone to confide in. Someone who could know my demons and still care about me.”

I loved the cocky arrogant hero and Hadley’s take no lip attitude. It was an interesting, slow burning mix of frenemies to lovers and second chances.
“So what should I call you?” he asked.
“Honest.” He cocked his head.
“Yeah. Sort of figured that.”
“Did you now?”

He nodded. “And bloody adorable.”

I absolutely loved all the time they spent together it was pure joy with an agonizing twinge of angst because of the heartbreak I sensed was coming. It was sweet torture and I struggled not to jump straight to the end.
“Before you, Hadley, I didn’t see a future… but to someone like me, someone who had no shot at a future, seeing one was monumental.”

There were times I felt so sad for him. For having to grow up so fast or simply not having a childhood at all. That he had been so thoroughly manipulated by his father that he couldn’t see how to get out of a situation that that grated and wore on him continually because he just wanted to be normal. But was happy that he found Hadley and I especially liked how he conveys the fact that she helped change his life for the better.
“I need to be someone’s everything, too…. Just because I made mistakes in the past, doesn’t mean I don’t deserve a future with someone who wants me for me. I deserve to be wanted, too.”

Hadley and Caynan’s romance was wonderfully charming and addicting. I have highlights in every other page that would make swoony teasers and there are plenty of sweet moments with which you could make an awesome pinterest board. Oh wait, the author already did that!

This story has secrets I won’t reveal because I hope they grip you just as they did me along with its emotional rollercoaster ride that includes fun fiestyness in this very original new adult plot.
“I can’t believe I made it through life without you.”

Before Hadley is a standalone, New Adult Romance. Told from both points of view with a happy ending.

"4,5 Caynan stars"

"You silly girl. You. You're my dream."

I FREAKING LOVED this book!
description
I'm just gonna tell you one thing and you will understand how much I enjoyed this reading! In this book I found a few to none things I could complain about and it's been a long freaking time for this to happen people...That's me all complaining blah...blah...blah...
description
I'm gonna start with the review because I want to SHOUT OUT my love for Caynan!

"I can't believe I made it through life without you."

That above reflects my feelings for Caynan too!He was AMAZING!He was a tortured soul because of the things he had to do to make it through life.He lost his childhood because of his father and did things he wasn't proud of but didn't have a choice!

Why the hell did her references to England make me so damn uneasy?
Oh, that's right.Because I was a fucking liar.

Then there was Hadley a smart, talented, caring, funny girl who didn't fall for Caynan's charm and hotness like the rest of them BUT she made him work for it ohhhh and it was worth it in the end!
description

"You're perfect.Don't you see that? From the second we crashed into each other, I needed to be near you.Needed you to want to be near me.When you didn't, it wasn't my ego that hurt."
He brought my hands to his chest. "This hurt."

These two together was the BOMB!I liked their interactions and their wit responses! They completed what was missing from their lives! When they started to open about their feelings and giving pieces of their hearts away that was great.I mean I know they were young and in high school but when you know you just know...!
And when he found the right girl he gave his heart so effortlessly and never took it back....

"I fucking love you more than life itself, Hadley."

Between Hadley and Caynan I have to choose Caynan a thousand times because he had no one and nothing in his life, yet again he was so giving and caring. For once he wanted to be someone's everything and he fought for it...

"Stop saying that.Stop believing that.I never wanted to hurt you.
I only wanted to know you.And to hold you.And to fucking love you."

In this book I liked the characters, the writing, it was dual pov,I liked the fact that there wasn't much of a drama and it was all about young love and a second chance to fight hard for what they almost lost.

I knew, even back then,I needed her in my life. And now,
I just needed her forgiveness. There really wasn't any other way I'd survive.

description
NoW the things that kind of bothered me:When Caynan came back groveling for forgiveness and showing her that he still loved and wanted her in his life she was a BITCH with a boyfriend!I mean I know that Caynan hurt her feelings and she had trust issues but the trust issues were there even when they met "she was all I can't trust the player". He showed up and tried to explain to her but she just pushed him away all the time....
description
Yeah,yeah...I know she got hurt worse after they were together BUT COME ON he was CAYNAN for the love of God and he wrote her freaking letters for 3 years explaining, sharing and including her in everything he wanted after he came back to her!And she read the letters when he came back not from the beginning!See selfish BITCH!
Ok maybe she wasn't a total bitch and she was scared he was going to hurt her again.

description
What I enjoyed the most was the fact that Caynan had enough and realized that he was worth it to find everything he didn't have in the past and it was time for Hadley to grovel but it happened so fast that I didn't enjoyed as much as I wanted to.Too bad, I wanted to see that!

P.S.There weren't many sexy scenes but the make out sessions and
the few sexy scenes were WOW!Their chemistry was of the charts...
description
description
"Because I love you.I love that you challenge me.I love that we argue but it doesn't change my feelings for you.I love that I've never felt more alive than when I'm with you.Whether we're on the top of a water tower or watching a train pass by.I just want to do everything with you by my side

Enjoy!xxx

Caynan has learned four things in his eighteen years. How to mash a baseball. How to make friends. One very specific skill. And how to hide a secret. Caynan is the cocky player with the delicious English accent that has a swarm of girls ready to take the new guy in school at face value. But one girl seems to be immune to his charms and is about is about to overthrow his carefully planned out li(f)e.

Hadley is used to being alone. She has her friends and she goes to all the parties but she usually spends her weekends home alone. As the daughter of the town sheriff, guys aren’t exactly clamouring at her door to take her out on a date. She has her art and her acceptance letter to Georgia State and absolutely no time for a manwhore and his flirtatious ways.

Caynan is confused by the girl who seems to see right through him and what begins as a fun challenge to get this snarky girl to give him the time of day soon turns into an obsession he can’t seem to ignore. He knows he shouldn’t get close to her. He’ll be leaving in a couple of months anyway, and there’s still that secret he has to keep hidden. Try telling that to his heart though. His stupid, foolish heart which suddenly makes him hope for more.

While the basis of this book is centred on the familiar trope of Good Girl meets Bad Boy, this book was anything but straightforward. The plot was totally unique and surprisingly emotional. It is a beautiful story about a lost boy and the girl who made him want for something better. However, the path these two have to take is not an easy or predictable one.

From it’s playful and flirtatious beginning to the epic ending, it had me completely hooked. This book had everything. A slow burn romance filled with sexual tension, uncertainty and angst. Witty banter and swoon-worthy flirtation. Danger and mystery. Some epicly sweet romantic gestures. Sob-worthy plot line and two completely endearing characters. If I could criticise one thing about this book it would be that I wished it longer. I really needed more time to spend with Caynan and Hadley.

I liked this book but didn't love it. Caynan was not very likable for the first half of the book but I really liked him in the second half. I liked Hadley in the first half of the book but not as much in the second part. I wanted a little more chemistry between these two- I didn't really feel the love connection between them (especially during the 2nd part of their story.) I did find the story interesting and I love a reformed bad boy. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.

“Hi! I'm what you call a bad boy. I'm 18, tall dark and handsome; have a fake British accent, live in a trailer and I move a lot.
That is because I'm a thief (not by my choice), and must be one step in front of police. But I would like to stay in one place long enough to have friends, to play baseball, to be a normal teenager for once."
“I needed friends, I needed girls, I needed sports to keep me sane in my insane world. “
Nice to meet you all…”

CAYDEN aka Conner
description

Oh, Cayden, it's Nice to meet You …

description

“Hi there. I'm what you would call a good girl. I'm 18, blond, small,….”

Yea, yea…

description

Just kidding... go on, please...

“Well, I'm also smart, sassy, sweet, stubborn live in the big house and did I mention my daddy is police detective…”

HADLEY aka Feisty
description

The promise he gives a long time ago, to somebody he loved, hold him a prisoner in his on life and he hates that. He was angry, exhausted and anxious and didn’t know how to change that.
He has crappy past and not much better future to look forward.

I didn’t like that either, same as the fact that he lied to her, but I did understand his reasons for that.

description

I like this book.
I like both of main characters very much.

This book makes me laugh,...

"I hadn’t met a safe I couldn’t open.
Try putting that on a college application."

“What’s up with him,” Cass asked as she scooped up her books and walked into the hallway with me.
“I might’ve mentioned my dad wanted to see him play.”
“Yup, that would definitely scare a guy.”
“That’s not the worst of it. My dad wants him to come over for dinner.”
Cass exploded into hysterics. “Well, that relationship was nice while it lasted.”

"Please let her be naked.
Yup, so I wasn’t just an asshole, I was a horny asshole!"

make me swoon,...

“I want to kiss you so fucking bad right now.”
My heart slammed against my chest as my voice came out a mere whisper. “Then do it.”
His eyes didn’t waver from mine. “This isn’t a date. I said I wouldn’t kiss you if it wasn’t a date.”

“If I do anything you’re not comfortable with, you need to tell me.”

It make me hot,...

“I want you out of this shirt,” he growled against my lips….
He pulled back, sensing my trepidation. “I didn’t say I was going to. I just said I wanted to.”
I exhaled a mix of relief and disappointment. “I guess player habits die hard.”
“Nope. I have eyes. And I’d be a fool not to want to see all of you.”
“But when the time is right…” He flashed a hotter-than-hot smirk. “I plan to do it. Very slowly. Piece by piece. And you’re going to love every second of it.”

and it make me sad,...
"I wanted to say, “I’ve got plenty of issues. Take your pick.” Instead, I shrugged. Being honest with someone was completely foreign to me. I’d never been able to be fully open to anyone before. Never been able to let anyone in. I wondered if Hadley was the one. The one I could actually be myself with. Because I really needed someone to confide in. Someone who could know my demons and still care about me."

Then the first half of the book end with major...

description

And we have the second part.

This time, I didn’t like her behavior towards him but I did understand, I totally did. It gets me all frustrated regardless. She goes on my nerves a little and even If I know she has every right to be like that I did like her little less.

description

I like Him still, hell I like him even better.

description

How not to love someone who says things like

“I love you enough for the both of us right now ”

If I was younger, if he was real and if he wasn't in love with Hadley, damn I will be all over him.

description

But, in the end, I was satisfied and very glad that I have the privilege to read and review this book before it's published.
I recommend it to everyone who love mature YA contemporary books.

photo 4bf17ebf3b134285c4cdcd89c23a0d_zpsmcit5bvv.gif “Then I met Hadley, and bam, I shared my biggest heartache. And what were the odds she had to go and be the daughter of a fucking cop? Karma truly was a bitch.”

In this revolving door called life, there are people who walk into our life and out for a reason. And for those few people, they can leave their mark. Some may stain and taint our heart and memories while others may leave a permanent tattoo on our heart, mind, body and soul. And in J. Nathan's latest release, she paints a literary canvas of young love, heartbreak, deceit, forgiveness and second chances.

#BeforeHadley

Before Hadley. Since Hadley. After Hadley. Life will never be the same for Caynan once he met Hadley. When he literally crashed into Hadley, Caynan's life was ruined. Ruined in the sense that someone so fierce, beautiful, strong and intelligent can easily wreck and change his life. She saw Caynan. Well the pieces of himself that he allowed her to see.

photo 4bf17ebf3b134285c4cdcd89c23a0d_zpsmcit5bvv.gif “He didn’t want a lesson. He wanted to spend time with me. What I couldn’t fathom was why. He was the new guy. The one with the accent and swagger. He had girls falling all over him. I was work. I was stubborn. I was not one to fall for the player. ”

The truth can be nasty. It can be devastating and yet it can be freeing. For Caynan, the truth was like a prison. It was the only thing that was holding him back from truly being himself. How could Caynan ever tell the woman that he loves that Caynan doesn't really exist and that he is nothing but a thief. A thief who has managed to have his heart stolen.

#BeforeHadley1

Before Caynan. Since Caynan. After Caynan. How does one forget a love that had the power to destroy you and yet ignite you? Can a relationship that started off with lies be ever repaired? Or will a life after Caynan be better off spending with someone else?

photo 4bf17ebf3b134285c4cdcd89c23a0d_zpsmcit5bvv.gif “This girl was the real deal. Sweet yet sassy. Confident yet vulnerable. If I wasn’t careful, she had the ability to make me feel things. Things a guy like me had no business feeling. Then I’d be fucked. ”

Before Hadley is definitely your young love second chance romance. It is about experiencing the heartache, the devastation, the lies, the truths, the passion, and the madness they call love. Regardless if it was before, since or after, LOVE is something that remains. And so J. Nathan clearly demonstrated that in this story as she douses, splashes and paints a colorful literary canvas of a second chance romance that is filled with an arrangement of raw emotions. So if you are looking for a tale, where LOVE leaves it's mark before, since and after then I would definitely recommend you to read Before Hadley.

5.0 FEISTY + PLAYER STARS!!!

Too bad I didn’t do relationships. What sensible eighteen-year-old guy did? Especially when he switched area codes like he did boxers.

Oh damn! This book is soooo good! Jen Nathan just delivered a fast paced and enjoyable read about friendship... acceptance...forgiveness...finding oneself...love...and second chances.

Before Hadley follows the story of Caynan...a cocky new guy with an accent and can mash a baseball like no one's business.

"He was the type of guy my father warned me about. The type who drew too much attention. The type who caused girls to become irrational. The type who became bored easily."

and Hadley....a daughter of a cop...feisty...an artist...

We were from completely different worlds. My life was one big lie. Hers held so many possibilities. My future would take me to another rich town. Hers would take her off to college then a career in art.

Hooooot!!! I so love this book!! The emotions that this story took me is so raw that I have loved it the moment I started reading it and I can't even put it down. What caught my attention first actually is that "Oh so damn hot cover". I mean it's one way of grabbing attention to readers and boy did mine was grabbed. I was even surprised when I finally read the first few pages because damn I was invested. I enjoyed reading it. The plot is just sooo good and worth the read. I was enthralled because it is not your usual teenage reads with a cocky arrogant athlete and a damsel in distress with love triangle and too much drana because seriously it's way more than that.

Secrets never remains secrets for long...

As the story progresses I was brought to a journey of a different roller coaster ride of emotions. From those hilarious moments...friendship blossoming to deep feelings...to the heart ripping scenes...ahhhh... I do not know what to say. In fact I may have shed a tear or two because I feel deeply to the emotions that was conveyed with this story. It was not sugar coated...it was so raw...it was everything.

“Just because I made mistakes in the past, doesn’t mean I don’t deserve a future with someone who wants me for me. I deserve to be wanted, too.” He shrugged, brushing unexpectedly against me as he did. “Maybe this is what was supposed to happen. Maybe I needed you to teach me that lesson.”

Honestly, I was afraid they wont end up with each other considering the turn of events but I was so glad that despite secrets...despite what went through...happily ever after exist for the two of them.

“You silly girl. You. You’re my dream.”

Highly recommended!!!

No one:
The heroine: I'm not like other girls.
The hero: she is not like other girls.

Having the heroine repeating this expression a thousand times during the whole book does not make her a badass or a girl with a strong personality, on the contrary. The story had potential, but it was purely written and the characters were so childish and judgemental!!

I found J. Nathan last year when I read Since Drew. Which was amazing, by the way and you need to read it or you'll be cursed with reading bad books for a decade. This is a real thing. Believe me.

Before I gush over this book and the author for a few paragraphs, let's have a moment of silence for this cover. For the love of everything holy, please let every single book from J. Nathan have a cover as amazing as this one. Amen.

I'm starting to see a trend with J. Nathan's books and it's not just the sexy beast on the cover. The characters are amazing and they are ones that will stick with you well into the next book that you're reading. I just loved Hadley from the very first moment I met her. She's so in control and wary of everything around her and when Caynan walks into the picture, she sure as hell wants to make sure he's not the one to shatter that control. I really enjoyed watching their relationship do nothing. Is that a strange thing to say? I think it was just the pursuit that was entertaining to witness. Hadley puts up a fight and it just makes for an interesting back and forth between her and the tenacious Caynan.

There was quite a bit of intrigue that I hadn't expected. And the turmoil that surrounded every page in this book was gripping. I had no idea what was going to happen next. Hell, I think that was one of the biggest pluses in this book. You never were truly sure what (or whom) was going to strike next. And that was just for part one!! You get to part two and all bets are off. I got to part two and it was time for me to play Bad Mom. Bad Mom doesn't strike often but when she does, the kids get ice cream for dinner and Netflix gets turned on so that I can read (mostly) uninterrupted.

I'm afraid that I've given too much away already but I have so much more to say. Here's the deal ... if you enjoy an amazingly addictive romance novel, J. Nathan is for you. This book is for you. You need to read it. You'll thank me later. So stop reading this and go get it. Pronto.

4.5 I love you enough for the both of us right now stars. I was expecting some emotional stuff because J. Nathan's first book Since Drew made me cry and ripped apart my heart. This book is in that same fashion but instead of ripping out my heart, it tore shredded it. Hadley and Caynan have such a tragically beautiful love story and this book is their story. It confused me, overwhelmed me, shocked me but most of all it made me fall in love.

The book is separated into two parts, before Caynan got locked up and after Caynan got out. Before Caynan was locked up, he was a mess. He didn't want to do what he was forced to because he finally found something worthwhile in life, a reason to live, and that something was Hadley. After going to jail, Caynan comes back into Hadley's life and turns upside down much like he did the first time around. He's not perfect, but he's redeemable and that's really what matters. Perfection's overrated anyway.

"I've had three years to think about my feelings for you. You've spent those years hating me. I know you must be confused, but I promise, I'll do everything in my power to gain your trust. I'll stay by your side or keep my distance while you figure it out. Whatever you need. The ball is in your court. You call the shots."

Hadley knew the moment she set eyes on Caynan that he was trouble but he was persistent and showed her what it meant to be in love. He was her first love and will be her last if he gets a say. The betrayal and shock that came from Caynan's stunt that landed him in jail rubs Hadley raw. When she sees him again, three years after the incident, she can't lie to herself that she's over him. Poor Hadley is tossed on yet another emotional roller coaster but this time it has a happy ending.

This is my first book from this author and it was a great introduction to her work. Before Hadley follows the typical new adult romance trope with a twist.

We are introduced to Hadley. She's the daughter of a socialite and a police detective. Her father being a cop intimidates most people from interacting with her. Along comes Caynan and he has no problem pushing all of her buttons, finding his way in despite her father's career and the walls she's erected to deter people from getting too close. The twist of this story is that Caynan is not who he seems.

I don't want to give away anymore of the plot. I'm just going to say that this was an enjoyable read and I didn't find much fault in it. My only real complaint is regarding the end.

Enjoy! xo

This is the first of three back-to-back books from J. Nathan that I recently read. Sadly, I found them a little repetitious in their plotting scenarios. I like the author's writing style and the premise of the stories. But, again I found way too much redundancy in the dialogues, particularly in the direct interactions between the two main protagonists. It was a bit disappointing. So I decided to do one review that covers all three books. And this is it - there's no need to say more. They weren't bad reads and I didn't hate any of the three, nor did I find them extraordinary. Of the three, I found myself most drawn to the overall effects of Before Hadley.

This review covers each of the three books: Before Hadley, Until Alex, Since Drew

Before and After .. once you have lived through the before ... The after well it can either be painful or beautiful. When your life consists of two instances that define you as an individual, every choice you make sets forth a chain of events that has the power to heal or destroy.

J. Nathan wove such a tale that at the end of this read I was left teary eyed and reeling. I simply did not want this story to end.

Caynan will forever be one of my favorite Book Boyfriends, not because of his looks (which btw OMG) but because of WHO he was. Sometimes authors make it impossible for the regular men out there to ever compete with our fictional heroes.

Hadley and Caynan meet in a way that was actually perfect for them .. they crashed into each other at a party. Typical boy meets girl, girl is too good for him, push and pull, HEA etc right? WRONG !

What these two go through is raw, powerful, inspiring and beautiful. The cards are stacked against them from day one. Secrets and lies, cast a dark shadow and when things come into light .. pain and destruction. Why is it that we always ask the same question .. "Is love enough to sustain this couple" ? Seems to be the age ole question we always want answers to .. and sometimes it is ... sometimes it's not. Love isn't always beautiful, wrapped in a pretty bow with sunshine and unicorns .. it's REAL and it hurts and it changes people. The question is I think how does love affect you as a person? Does it make you better, stronger and more in tune with your surroundings?

This is what happens with this couple .. as they go through the process of being teenagers to young adults. Facing issues that people their age don't typically ever encounter. When the ugliness of your past rears its ugly head, the pain of your struggles brought to light, and secrets you wished would remain buried revealed .. how does it affect the people you love. Who was this person you thought you loved .. an illusion ? Can redemption be found. Will LOVE be enough and how did it change two innocent people who wanted so bad to believe in it?

The strength of Hadley and Caynan will be tested but in the end everything they overcome will be worth it .. will it be together or apart is what you have to read to find out.

Sexy and emotionally charged , J. Nathan will have you crying, laughing, blushing and holding your breathe .. waiting to see HOW Caynan's life Before Hadley changed after Hadley.

God, I am so mad at myself. Why do you ask? Because usually when I am reading a book I highlight and make a million notes about what is going on and my favorite parts so that I can write my review easily. And, you know what? I didn't highlight or take a single note and here is why! I was in this story. I mean, seriously glued to it like a crazy person. Not one single note. Not one single highlight. Gah! I am really mad at myself but all I can say to the author is "Way to go J. Nathan, you made me forget. You brought me so far into your world that I was living it and so in the moment that I simply forgot about everything else.'" This book is just fabulous and probably my favorite so far from this author.

I took a chance on author J. Nathan by picking up a book of hers one day on netgalley and now every time I see a book of hers on there I snatch it up. I love when I find an author I love purely by taking a chance. Not on a recommendation or hearing about a certain book. It feels like fate when I find these gems because I have since read three books of hers and have loved every one of them but Before Hadley really took the cake. And this is why.: The angst! Oh, the ungodly amount of angst. The rip out your heart, stomp all over it and throw it the garbage disposal angst. God, this book was hard. Mostly because I seriously didn't expect it to go the way it did. Because I loved Caynan too much for that to happen. Because I sympathized with him and just knew that the author wouldn't do that to me. But she did, and it hurt so good. Lord mercy, all of this author's books touch on subjects that hurt and are hard but this one really was just so sad and difficult and I simply loved every stinking minute of it.

Seriously, get this one right now if you love a book that is sexy, sweet, amazing, and puts your through the emotional wringer. I adored it and cannot recommend it enough. Author J. Nathan I love to hate you! I love to hate you.

If that cover doesn’t capture your attention, the words between the pages sure will!

I’ve read J. Nathan before so I expected something good, but not THIS good! In fact, it’s fabulous! This one really came out of left field and surprised the hell out of me. The beginning captured me. The middle kept me wanting more. The ending wasn’t overdone …. it was damn near perfect. And, that epilogue… had to be one of THE best epilogues ever.

If you haven’t read J. Nathan, you have no idea what you’re missing. This one was is well worth reading!!!

He threw his head and laughed, low and deep. When he laughed like that, his accent was non-existent. And as much as I wanted to deny it, I liked his laugh.

What????

Caynan was an irresistible force to everyone in school. He’s the new guy with a swoon-worthy body and a killer English-accent. Hadley knew he was nothing but trouble, and but he was making it hard for her since she caught his attention.

Unlike any other girls, Hadley seemed to be immune to his charms. She doesn’t want him, but she’s also the girl who challenges him and makes him forget every problem he has with their banters.

But Caynan has secrets of his own, and it wasn’t the type of secrets he’d be eager to share to anyone. He didn’t need friends, most especially he didn’t need to get close to someone. Like any other town, he’d be here temporarily and soon he’ll be gone. But Hadley was different, she was amazing: pretty, intelligent, has a big heart, rich and so wrong for him. But every day, he couldn’t help himself to fall.

What happens when she discovers the truth?

I totally loved it. Right from the start: his cockiness, arrogance and self-confidence were just over the top and yet you couldn’t help but love him. He’s nice – but his secrets weren’t. It was the thing that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was the thing that kept my heart beating so painfully against my chest – what happens when it was discovered? Does he trust her enough with her secrets? Or they’re already doomed from the start?

So many questions, and the answers weren’t easy. It was hard, it was painful, and healing needed time. Maybe, when they were finally ready, when everything has been made up for, everyone apologized and everyone was forgiven, maybe, just maybe second chance was possible, because these two were the best thing that happened to each other.

Would forgiveness come easy? People make mistakes, and people deserve to be love whole heartedly by someone. I think this book makes us realize that. Not everyone is perfect, and if we truly love someone, we see behind every single imperfection they have, no matter how grave it maybe. (I am so tempted to put some spoilers, so I’m going to stop right here!!!)

To end my rant, what I wanted to say is that this book was a really great read. It’s emotional, it’s real, it’s steamy, it’s romantic and most especially it gives you a whole lot of (good and bad) surprises that will keep you on the edge of your seats. It's a story of love, life and second chances. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, your hearts will ache, your hearts will pretty much get broken, but Caynan sure knows how to fix it. You should not miss this! Another 5-star read from J. Nathan!

It's been three years since he was arrested, three long years since after she turned him in. Now that he's out of prison, his only mission is to win her back, win back the one that got away. No matter what it takes...? Feeling betrayed and lied to, will the heroine be able to move past the hurt caused by him? She knows deep down that there is a connection between them. That somehow they'll both be able to move forward with or without each other? Hadley gave up the most important thing in her life to the one person she thought she loved may be the biggest mistake she has ever made. A bad British boy... who wouldn't fall for that? Well, she tries to keep him at arm’s length to protect her heart but he had other ideas.

Caynan has been misfortune when it comes to his childhood upbringing. He lost his mother at a young age and had made a promised on her deathbed to never leave his father's side. It's what made him stick around and did all the dirty work his father ask him to do. How long can the charade go on until he's caught? When the truth comes out will both individuals be strong enough to hold on to love they think they feel for each other or will they end up having that closure after all and move on with their lives and go their separate ways?

Having the opportunity of reading in advance of Before Hadley was released was a great experience. I was given a chance to play with the author’s characters, suggested to make the story more twisted. It was something I'll never forget. I enjoyed working with Jen and I hoped you'll enjoy her writing as well as I did. It's a love story that could've been easy to live with if it had been under different circumstances. Before Hadley by J Nathan is a story that will stick with you for a while even after reading the book.

Ahhh, this book! Equal parts funny, sweet, sexy, heartbreaking, and stomach-clenching. Add in a snarky, fiesty, sarcastic heroine, a troubled, cocky, arrogant hero and you've got the perfect recipe for an engaging New Adult novel.

Hadley and Caynan are 2 fantastic characters, I loved them as individuals and as a couple they made my heart smile. I adored Hadley. It's always so refreshing to read a female character who's not weak, who can give as good as she gets, who stands up for herself.
"You should know," I warn him. "In a game of wits, I always win. You might as well admit defeat now."

And Caynan, oh Caynan. He's the bad boy from the broken home, the boy all the girls want, the boy with all the secrets, the boy you just can't help but fall for. He's not used to being denied and his pursuit of Hadley was so sweet, so swoon-worthy. And even though Hadley put up a good fight the girl really stood no chance!
"Do that again," he implored. "What?" "Laugh like that." My forehead creased. "Why?" "Because it's one of the prettiest things I've ever heard."

But just when you think things are going their way, Caynan's secrets come to light and everything comes crashing down. Life is thrown into a turmoil for both Hadley and Caynan, and you have to wonder if these 2 will ever be able to get past the past, and get back the love they once shared.

Before Hadley is unexpected, it's surprising, it's engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it.

Note: This ARC was provided by Patchwork Press Cooperative in exchange for an honest review.

I can't really get too much into the story because giving details would clue in those who have yet to read the book to what secrets Caynan is keeping from Hadley. What I will say, though, is that J. Nathan has given readers yet another story that has at least one main character dealing with complicated circumstances and how different their life becomes after allowing the other main character to get close enough to them. Caynan and Hadley's love is tried and tested. There's time for contemplation and a need to seek absolution, even when it doesn't come easily. Caynan realizes his life before Hadley is very different from his life after Hadley. The question becomes, is he prepared to live a life without her and would she ever be willing to have a life with him again? I loved Before Hadley and happily give it 4.5 stars, rounded off to five stars. ♥

I really liked the beginning, but then at PART 2, the story lost me.

I am tired of hearing how beautiful the heroine is. After awhile I am not sure what made her so beautiful. She got on my nerves. She seemed to be going through a skanky period after Like I said part 2 ruined the story for me.

The writing style was okay. I think one POV for part 1 and a different POV for part 2 would have been a better way to go than the frequent switch in POVs.

I paid $2.99. It was worth $.99 (maybe), not $2.99.

I thought J Nathans first book Since Drew was an emotional read and dont get me wrong it completely is but now he have Before Hadley and HOLY moley this one shredded my heart. This book gives it all to you and you will be hooked from the beginning and not wanting to put it down. You get friendship, love, second chances, forgiveness and a whole lot more.

Caynan is the cocky new guy with an accent. Hadley is a cops daughter and feisty as all get out. throughout this book you are on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Laughing one second, heart being ripped out the next to being content for a short time period before your back on another ride.

I now know after reading two of J. Nathan's book that i will never be disappointed in anything I read from her. her writing just gets better and better with each book and i cannot recommend this book enough so why are you still reading my review and not purchasing your copy adn reading it?? Get to it!!!

4.5 stars!

I had been wanting to read one of this author's books for awhile now! I've been on a few Cover Reveal and Release Day Blitz's for her books, but I'd yet to actually read one of them! I then really wanted to read a book set in high school, and this book seemed to fit the bill lol, so I decided to start with this one! I really enjoyed this book! It did take until round about the 60% mark to really grip me and keep me desperate to read one! This book was also sort of split into two parts and I did prefer the second part! The first part told the beginning of the characters story and how they met and how their relationship started, but the second was all about forgiveness! The plot also had a big secret in it and I really wasn't expecting it! The secret did have a big impact on the plot and it really changed things and shook the plot up! I just loved the plot and I loved that there were some hot scenes in it too! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Hadley was the main female character, and in this book she was a very funny and relaxed character! Hadley also came from a well to do background and her parents were well off, but Hadley didn't brag or throw her family's money around! This made me respect her and like her even more! Hadley also grew a lot in this book and I loved her changes! I could understand why she was resistant to start something with her love interest again and I did like that she took a while to forgive him! Caynan was the main male character and love interest of Hadley! I did feel really sorry for Caynan in this book! He had been through a lot in his life and he was controlled by his father! His father made Caynan do things that were wrong and would get him in serious trouble! I wish that Caynan had stood up to his father more, but then I can also understand why he didn't! I did love Caynan though! He was easy for me to connect with and he came a long way in this book and I had complete respect for him! He had turned his life around and worked hard! I loved that this book was written from both Hadley and Caynan's point of view! I was hoping that it was going to be after I read the synopsis because the synopsis doesn't really tell you anything about whose point of view it was going to be written from, so I'm really happy that it was written from both Hadley and Caynan's point of views! It helped me connect more with both characters and it allowed for more things to happen in the plot, especially since the characters spent some of the book apart! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! Everything in the plot was wrapped up and all the questions raised were answered! The ending of this book was also left at the perfect place and it really summed up the characters story! I adored it! I also can't wait to read more books from this author! I'm definitely going to check out her books that have already released and give them a read! The cover for this book is also really hot! It definitely drew me to the book and it suits the book a lot too! The model is also the perfect Caynan!

So good!!

A hero who is bad and does bad things but is also good with a good heart. Loved it!

This was different to what I've read before and it spans over a few years towards the last half of the book ( if you don't like time jumps and the heroine does have other relationships )

It has a very big message about forgiveness and making amends and doing the right thing. Our hero was in a bad position due to his father and did a lot of crappy things but it wasn't hard to see he was a good person underneath and oh, how he showed it. Gah, I loved him and how he tried to make things right.

It's a book I'd definitely re-read.

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance

Age: 18+

Recommendation: No, but you should read the review to decide for yourself.

Type: Stand-alone

Summary: This story really irked me in some ways and in others caught my attention. + good female lead -predictable -unrealistic plot

Synopsis:

What’s worse than a cocky new guy at school? A cocky new guy with a killer body and the attention of every female around. Hadley can tell the minute she lays eyes on Caynan that he’s someone to avoid. He may have looks and charm, but he’s also got heartbreak written all over his pretty face.

Unfortunately for Hadley, Caynan has his sights set on her. She’s the one girl who doesn’t want him. The one girl who’s turned off by his charm. The one girl who challenges him like no other. And, though she couldn’t possibly know the truth about him, she seems to be the one girl who really sees him.

But with Caynan, things aren’t at all what they seem. His secrets have secrets and everything out of his mouth straddles the line between truth and fiction. He knows better than to get involved with anyone, especially with his time limited in the new town, but he just can’t seem to get Hadley out of his mind. Too bad for him, secrets never remain secrets for long.

To start off with, lets talk about the things I liked about this book. I enjoyed the fact that the lead female character Hadley has some girl balls. She is presented as an intelligent girl that knows a bad guy when she see’s one. She was the best character in the book by far but I also liked the overall alpha presence the lead male character Caynan.

Now for the uncomfortable part of the book review, the things that I just couldn’t get down with. This story is takes place when both Hadley and Caynan, are eighteen and are still in high school. Right away, Caynan is presented as an overly sexual lady killer and all the females in this high school are shoving their goods in his face trying to get in his pants. All the teenage girls are portrayed as hyper-sexual and that is what makes our lead female so different is that she isn’t ripping her clothes off to get at him and all his ridiculous good looks. I think if the setting were changed to even freshman year in college I wouldn’t have been so grossed out by it. I wasn’t all that crazy about the writing either, I realize that advanced reader copies are unedited for the most part but it wasn’t the editing as much as it was just the way the writers thoughts came across. It felt a bit disorganized.

This story takes place in Georgia. The entire book is riddled with these so-called underage seniors gallivanting about at parties with kegs and getting wasted. There is no mention of parents, sneaking out or avoiding curfews. I get that teenagers drink but it felt really unrealistic to me, and I am from the South..parents are a different breed down here.

Without going into much detail, I can tell you the plot was also unrealistic. Caynan does things that aren’t discovered for a while, that would be more than obvious in the real world. Not to mention, that Hadley can’t win at all in this book. She stands her ground, people tell her she isn’t giving things a chance, when she gives in she gets crushed, repeatedly. I just can’t relate to the ending either. Again, with the unrealistic.

Even though J. Nathan gives us a strong, sexy male character in Caynan, I was completely turned off by his actions and his constant manipulation. This is a new one for me because I actually like my so-called book boyfriends to be a little on the douche side because it makes it that much better when they come around. I just can’t get behind a relationship with a character that is so blatantly selfish.

Overall, I hate to say it but I would probably pass on this one. Unless, you only read books based off the cover and if that’s the case go for it. The cover on this one is a win.

Review:
“Hadley stared across the room at me for a long time. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail and her eyes danced across my face. She was beautiful. Like really beautiful. Natural and perfect. At least perfect to me.”

4 heartbreaker stars! I may be slightly in love with Caynan….ssssshhhh don’t tell!

Caynan is the new guy at school and Hadley knows the minute she sees him, that he’s not the guy she wants to be around. She doesn’t care how gorgeous he is, in her eyes he’s an arrogant heartbreaker. The minute Caynan sees Hadley, he knows he has to have her. Caynan loves a challenge and he knows with Hadley, she won’t be able to resist him for long. And well she’s the only girl who seems to see the real Caynan. But behind the cocky exterior lays a boy with a dark past with a ton of secrets. Can he get Hadley to see the real him or will he leave for another town before she realizes who he really is?

I loved this book and I was hooked on Caynan the minute he walked into the book!! He’s everything you should hate in a man, but dang it he’s too hard to hate!! I loved the dynamics between him and Hadley and their relationship. Definitely worth the read!
