The opening scene is intriguing. Amethyst is in the forest, she can hear somebody in pain. It's her mother. She is been murdered. But why?

Through her grief and her pain Amethyst sets out through the forest to reach the neighboring land. Bereft and alone she inadvertently saves Lumen's life. Slightly older and a lot wiser Lumen takes Amethyst into his home and his heart as his apprentice. The two live a calm and peaceful life until the King's advisers call on Lumen for help and the two of them are drawn into a world of politics and intrigue as the world begins to change and war fast approaches.

Allen has a clear distinctive voice and uses easy and accessible language throughout making this a good read for it's intended market or for reluctant to read adults. She uses just the right amount of description of people and locations to create a clear image in a readers mind. The characters are interesting and multi-faceted with grey areas to their personalities. The storyline is involved and intricate without being overly complicated and areas of the universe or points that might need further explanation are cleverly explained through the teaching sessions and "gossip" between ministers.

There is a clear message throughout about love, and good and evil, that is presented in a way that is not too preachy for an adult reader.

A solid start for a debut author, I look forward to the next installment.

I am IN LOVE with this book! This book contains many mysteries, questions and theories that makes you want to know badly the REAL answers! It makes you start making theories yourself! It's that kind of book that, even when you are not reading it, makes you think about it the whole day *-* INCREDIBLE! It's really exciting how the situation changes quickly in the book and it's intriguing to see how the characters react to those changes! The characters are so amazing! It's so cool how we get to see them grow and we are so immersed in the book that it's like watching your little babies grow :D and also we get to see how the bonds between the characters grow! We get to see bits and pieces of romance and it's really fascinating the way it can affect us so much :3! This book and each of it's elements are so wonderful! It makes you want so much more of the story, characters and everything else of the book *-*! SPECIALLY WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER! I can't wait for the next ones I NEED THEM! :3 <3 ^^ *-*

I read Amethyst series with my fourteen-year-old son. We both enjoyed the books. The series are meant for young adult and those with young hearts. If you are a fan of vulgarity, then Amethyst series is not for you. If you are a fan of clean books with good values, then the Amethyst series are for you. I found the books refreshingly clean.
