Eric Riordan thought he had seen the worst the post-Outbreak world had to offer.
He was wrong.
As the Midwest Alliance puts plans in motion to touch off a civil war, Eric and a group of elite warriors are recruited to stop them. To prevent disaster, they will venture into the heart of enemy territory on an assassination mission. To survive, Eric will have to call on all his training, willpower, and strength. Because this fight will determine not only his future, but the fate of an entire nation.
And if he fails, the enemy will show no mercy.

James N. Cook is a martial arts enthusiast, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a former cubicle dweller, and the author of the Surviving the Dead series. He hikes, he goes camping, he travels a lot, and he has trouble staying in one spot for very long. He lives in North Carolina.
I listened through the series again to get to book six. An excellent series with wonderful characters and plenty of action throughout. A very good, well developed story. In this, the last novel available in the series, Eric, Gabe, Greyhawk, and an assembled group of warriors infiltrate the Midwest Alliance to eliminate them and ruin their plans for a civil war. A wonderful bit of writing.
I used to say this was one of the better series in the genre, it has a slow start, but push through it and you’ll be richly rewarded. Then I stated it was one of the best, top three for sure. Now?? It’s risen to the top. It must be the very best series, if my memory is serving me correctly- or standing shoulder to shoulder with another. The last three books have been phenomenal. Especially the last two. So far beyond any other zombie apocalypse novels. The richness and intricacy of storyline. The setting of scenes is crafted so perfectly that the reader feels like he or she can just step right into the page, grab a melee weapon, and fight to Eric’s left. And Eric, the other characters old and new — the development of who they are as people, well, I didn’t think it was possible for them to keep growing, evolving, becoming more real. And I’m long past being invested in all of them. I love them, like them, are quite fond of them, sorta know them, or totally dislike them and wouldn’t mind at all if they tripped over a grey crawler and into a zombie’s waiting mouth. Now I’ll state the obvious- why are you reading this review if you haven’t read Book #1 yet? If you need convincing that the series is worthwhile—- run, don’t walk — to the Book #1 page. Download it. Get through the rough parts of the first book (I dunno? Slow? Too much time spent in Eric’s head? I have no idea, but it’s RARE for me to have to fight through a book...). Once through that —- on to the best zombie apocalypse series you’ll EVER read!!! And I’ve been reading this genre for almost 5 years. A daily diet. TV shows and movies too. Just sharing as a point of reference. ;) Now I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!! I’m already feeling anxious about hitting the end of the road.....the last book, when I will then have to wait however long for a new book to be released. Truly painful lol!
.... one hell of a series!!! It has more action than a lady of pleasure in Amsterdam!!! Just not the same kind!!! LOL. The story stays continuously along the same line, and just flows along with its unique characters, even after six books! If you like books with apocalyptic zombies and LOTS of action, then I'd seriously recommend this series by James Cook! I really don't think that you will be disappointed!!!! I certainly wasn't!!! This book continues the adventure of Eric Riordan and Gabriel Garrett. It is not everyone in the apocalypse who want to live peacefully and try to rebuild a new world. Again our two protagonists are called upon to try and take down those who are in charge of the Alliance (the enemy) We are taken into the heart of the fight and what a fight it is. We are however also shown that there is still good in this unreal world.
I am enjoying the series and I really love Gabe and Caleb. I like Eric for the most part but he can really be a smart ass at times. He'll do or say whatever he wants when he wants but takes great offense at the least little comment from someone else. I can understand why he'd rub some of the others the wrong way.
Another very enjoyable entry in this series. Really loved how they got the 4 super soldiers together to dominate all. Hope we get a chance to learn more about our new favorite Apache!
Really loved this book. James Cook keeps the interest of this reader because he is always coming up with an angle to the story that is unexpected. I really like this author.
I have read all six ofJames Cook's Surviving the Dead series. All have been excellent and I have yet to come to that point in his series where it slows down and repetition kicks in. Great apocalyptic zombie series and full of as much action as you can handle. The characters are believable and rock-solid. Four Stars!!!
The Reanimated - The Ghouls, the . . the ZOMBIES! Mr. Cook, thanks for the tales, I'm enjoying this series lots and will keep and eye out . . . Oops . . for book 7.
Another great book by James Cook. Book 6 in the series.
This author knows how to bring the characters in his books come to life and makes you feel like you know them and either you are cheering them on or you want them to kill them. Especially the undead.
This is the 6th of Cook's "Surviving the Dead" series. Another solid offering. The only reason his books get 4 stars, rather than 5 from me is that I find the dialog a bit stiff. Otherwise, this series is among the top in the genre.
A compelling storyline throughout the series. Well developed characters that standout in their own unique way, yet meld easily when they come together. Looking forward to hopefully a ten book series.
I love these books they are amazing. When I read them or listen to them I make my family leave me alone and the house has to be completely quiet so I can just 100% get into the story. I loved the ending and I can not wait until the new book.
I've read books 1 through 6 and think this might be the most intense, hard to put down book yet. I am completely enjoying the character development, and find myself getting lost in the story and emotionally invested. A great series that I'm truly enjoying.
Good solid work. The characters are believable. The character make like and not -like at the same. He has a big ego that makes him a little dislike ed at times. Read it.
Good series. I look forward to the next book. Enjoy reading this author's books. Would recommend this series and author to anyone interested in this type of book
Another solid entry in the series from Mr. Cook. I love the mixing of characters throughout the series - it makes the overall story more believable and interesting.
