Looking for key word or a prompt to get your juices flowing? Check out A Year of Creative Writing Prompts.
This book, for writers of all levels, presents prompts by genre as well as prompts to help develop a book idea. Three (3) prompts per day; the first prompt is a single word meant to get your imagination flowing during the first cup of your favorite caffeinated drink. The other 2 prompts are ideas presented for the writer to think about, jot notes, or do what you will. Each day has its own page, making it clutter-free for the eyes and the mind. Prompts are diverse, anything from Write a prayer to Create a monster.
With this book, there are no more excuses. The ideas are there. All you have to do is open up to any page your creative heart desires.
I really enjoy using this book. There's a wide range of prompts, which are creative enough to get my brain working, but open enough to let me use them in a variety of styles of writing. I LOVE the format: each day offers a one-word prompt, a longer "midday" prompt, which is sometimes a loose plot sketch, and a "dinner" prompt which is often longer and more complex, or can involve working with style/vocab/rhetoric etc.
From 62% the same prompts are collected by type, which is useful.
Overall this is the best prompt collection I've bought and I use it constantly. Would recommend.
Some fun prompts, although not all are useful for all types of writing. I did find some that sparked some ideas. The second half of the book is unnecessary and repetitive, simply organizing the prompts in another format.
I'm not kidding, these prompts are what I always thought prompts are supposed to be and do; they got the cogs whirring and the fingers flying!! Thank you, Love of Ink!! I'll send you two my best (well, in my humble opinion) "Fleshed Out Funny," as a tribute. Rock on with your bad selves, cheeee huu (<-- the Polynesian equivalent of the southern "yeee-hah") !!
A great source for writing prompts, some with specific genres and intentions, others left ambiguous and open for interpretation. My only real dislike was that many were repetitive in nature, with just a few points changed to technically be different.
Overall, not bad. I used this book as a source for potential prompts in case they are needed during NaNoWriMo 2020. I'd say I've written down about 1/4 to 1/3 of the prompts available to use later.
This book was completely full of prompts that made one think and explanation upon even the smallest of ideas. It even challenged your thinking to get you in the mindset to write, providing the foundation for different challenges to stretch your writing muscles.
A few prompts contained some awkward wording and a couple of typos, but nothing like some of the shorter, far more noticeable books I've read in the past few days.
This book started out really strong, and I enjoyed the first portion of it, and I don't know what changed, whether it was that I got cranky with the types of prompts that they offered or that they ran out of ideas as they got later in the year or what went wrong but it just got worse and worse, the ideas harder and harder to use to get any words, and eventually I found myself skipping most pages thinking "nah this won't do"
I had a lot of fun reading this book. The collection of prompts was varied and really creative. I love writing prompts, and I can also be pretty picky, but this book was fantastic for me.
This is great if you get stuck. But it doesn't fit into my daily writing routine (as a daily). The prompts are great - at random too. I don't necessarily feel called to them in the order they are written.
I love Writing Prompt books. As a poet, I can only use about 10% of the prompts. Still, I enjoy them. This would be a good book for any short-story or novel writer. It would also work in English classrooms. Some of the prompts are extremely creative and fun.
I love A Year In Writing Prompts, it is a writer's dream. If you are experiencing any kinds of writer's block this book is for you. But it is also a great book to use to get some amazing story ideas.
