Oof, this is massive, over 711 thousand words, and still ongoing. I’ve just finished it at chapter 150, but most likely will update this review when the story will have been completed.
The sheer length alone qualifies it as a good read, definitely.
I’m more in line with the usual shounen jump stories, so the PoV of a female self-insert irritated me a little, but only for a while, and it was *extremely* well done, thought out, in-depth, and occasionally used to point out other things and even plot-relevant. Hats off.
I’m not in favour of stories taking the anime as canon instead of the original manga. However, this makes for massive enjoyment and material to build upon. I cannot say how much of it is original, given I never watched most of the “fillers” and mostly read the manga instead (however well done the anime was, in parts), but it helps doing an impressive amount of world and especially character, skill, setting and story building. Moreover, it seems like we’ll entirely avoid the time skip (yay! I hate it, although I agree it’s been necessary from an action genre PoV), or at least almost all of it (we’re, what, 12-18 months into it already?). However. That means, no Naruto. Not that the story suffers too much from it, but it’s a little hard not liking the most unsurprising ninja… even though the SI has some comic potential all herself.
Some of the scenes were confusing or annoying, but overall this is looking to be a solid five stars once completed.
This free online book made me laugh and cry in turn. It was a real page turner. My only regret is that it is unfinished. Last updated in 2019 the author appears to have abandoned the work. I hope wherever the author is they are happy and healthy, and have simply moved on to paid projects.
I'm on 27 chapters and I think it totally deserves the title of the "most liked Naruto fanfic". Shikako is a glorified self-insert, yes, but her deep personality makes up for that.
