She’s determined to claw her way to the top and land a spot with a real paper.

When she tracks a lead on a string of gruesome paranormal murders to the small town of Buckhorn, Arizona, she’s certain she’s landed the perfect scoop. As the investigation grows hot and Sera winds up in the crosshairs, she’ll need the help of a sexy shifter, special agent Talon Rede, to unmask the murderers before she becomes the next victim.

I loved it, and I can't wait to read more. This is a unique fantasy story because it involves vampires, shape shifters, mythological gods, and zombie like thingies called phages.

Sera is a broke journalist. One day she got a tip about some murders. When she went to go investigate, she was attacked by a dangerous group. She had to use her uncontrollable powers to defend herself.

Agent Talon heard about the attack. More than 20 people died that night, but only one survived without even a scratch. The sexy shifter should be looking at Sera as a suspect, but he can't because he is in love.

Sera and Talon fall in love almost instantly. Talon's past holds him back from getting too attached to Sera, but she like a drug that he can't get enough of.

This was action packed, and I loved all the characters involved in the story.

Review

I am soooo happy to have been given this book as arc. I love the story, it's simply amazing.

It all starts with these mysterious and gruesome murders that are commited by something/someone supernatural. Gossip mag reporter Sera Benenati (the h) wants to make herself a name as a serious reporter, so she starts to investigate these murders and that is also how she comes in contact with special agent Talon Red (the H).
It turns out the murders and attacks are somehow linked to her and now it's Talon's and his team's job to make sure she is protected. And, well...that is easier said than done.

description
(when you read the story, this GIF will make sense)

I adored the h, she can really kick ass and it's so refreshing to read about a strong h, who can protect herself, if need be. Also, if you mess up, you have to earn her forgiveness. The H is not so bad either, he definitely can be a big bad wolf. ;)

The more I read the story, the more fascinated and engrossed I bacame in the plot. This one has it all, even beings you didn't knew existed. There are vampires, shifters, humans, phages (similar to zombies), god like creatures named the Luminari, psyke creatures... Wow, right!

Code Black is one huge romantic action mystery story, mixed with likable and humorous secondary characters.

I absolutely recommend and can't wait for Drake's story. :)

"I know it's too soon, but I can't change how I feel. I love you, Sera." - Talon Rede

Well, it seems like shapeshifters are my thing these days or something. I've been reading way too many books with them - especially military romances WITH shifters in them - lately. Now, this works in two ways. One of them is, I'm all hyped and stuff about them, which is what happens whenever I stay focused on one genre for more than one book. The other... Well, the other is sort of negative. Since I'm used to the theme from book to book, it's easier for me to find faults between the stories - faults that usually bring the rating down for no apparent reason, other than the fact that I sense something is missing.

In this book's case? Not. A. Single. THING!

From the phone call during which Sera and Talon felt the instant attraction, to the very last moment, the book was perfect.

First of all, falling in love at first... word? Priceless! It shows that those two didn't just have the looks going on for them. Their pulling towards each other was deeper than that. They fell in love because their personalities matched so perfectly, it would be a crime for them to NOT be together. Throughout the whole book, not only did they both realize that, they also kept muttering to themselves about the fact. They knew, and it was only a matter of time before the inevitable.

Now, that doesn't mean everything was peachy between them. If it was, this would have been a rather boring story. But no, Sera and Talon kept arguing till the very end - I mean, even the marriage proposal was hilarious the way they did it. Not just to argue, by the way, but because they really had different opinions on certain matters, and weren't afraid to defend them - nor were they willing to suddenly change for each other without some serious trust bonds formed between them first.

The action was over the top, and the suspense thrilled me like there was no tomorrow. There was constantly danger that just couldn't be shaken off - nor could it be found easily - and that, added to the fact that those monsters were pretty scary in description, worked wonderfully to create an atmosphere that didn't just combine paranormal, romance, and mystery with military-trained characters - it damn well turned them into one thing, a perfect, undividable mixture!

Now I can't wait to read Jame's book - well, actually, the main reason for that is Drake. Boy, that interrogation scene was the hottest thing ever!

P.S.: Tina Moss managed to make me like the vampires more in this book than I did the shifters! One of them was a delicious Texan hunk, and the other was like Spike from Buffy. Holy heck I love Bull and Drake, like, seriously!

*Insert Movie Guy Voice*

In a world full of paranormal creatures who live among us, an elite force of paranormal cops keep the peace. But there are fringe groups that conspire to seize control for their own kind, and humanity is caught in the crossfire.

Shape-shifters, vampires, and psychics? Oh My! Throw in gripping suspense, red hot romance, and a new supe on the block who could tip the balance, and you've got one hell of a great urban fantasy/paranormal romance read. A fast paced and fun read!

I received this ARC from City Owl Press via NG in return for an honest review

"The neurons in (my) brain fired on two different planes of thought. One was (mine) and the other belonged to another, an entity..."

Okay my lovelies, let's hop straight to the plot!

Serafina Benenati's life has never been normal.
A freakish voice comes from her subconscious- antagonizing and irritating as anything.
She's trying to become a serious journalist but no one will give her the time of day.
Frustrated. Irritated. angry. confused.
Just to name a few of her feelings.
When she lands on a gold mine, a story is on the horizon and by all that's holy, it'll be hers.
one problem.
Special Agent Talon Rede.
Just the name itself is enough to make her heart speed up a bit,
...there's also the fact that he turns furry.
When suddenly all hell breaks loose and freakish fanged-demons are demanding her blood and presence, Talon Rede may be the only thing keeping her alive.
but sometimes...even that is not enough.

okayyyyy, this book was a pretty sweet read.

It's a fascinating new concept to urban-fantasy. I mean, yea, there are werewolves, vampires and werecats and all that jazz...but we have a new beast, one i haven't encountered before in this genre....which makes it, shall we say, fascinating? if not, refreshing.

I was actually pretty entertained too. It's got a lot of action and suspense but I will admit that it is very much in the romantic realm. What do I mean by that? Well, it's romantic to boots, and the focus is very much on that.

So this is the moment where i do my little tv-like disclaimer- this book is suitable for New Adults to adults. There are sexual situations and some description of intimacy. There is also language and a fair bit of blood spilling. You've been warned.

The characters were nicely thought out, they were pretty generic, in the sense that Talon is your typical brooding alpha wolf. The girl too, she had many moments where i sat there and face-palmed but oh well. I do want what she can do though, that's pretty awesome and in my eyes, pretty redeeming.

The writing is nice, but I wouldn't say it was A-league type writing. It wasn't the best thing ever but enjoyable.

Definitely worth a read!

Stay awesome!

This was my first book by Tina Moss and the first in a new series. Sera is a reporter who is trying to write a story that will get her taken seriously. She is trying to get information on a murder and so contacts Talon, the special agent in charge of the investigation. Although he doesn't answer her questions the two end up talking on the phone for 2 hours. The two end up meeting each other when Sera is the only survivor in a gruesome murder spree where 22 people are dead. Talon comes to believe that the murders are somehow linked to Sera and although she is keeping secrets and he should think of her as a suspect, he doesn't. In fact Talon just wants to keep her safe.

Sera has powers that she hasn't accepted and that she can't really control. She's spent her whole life hiding them. She's tough and feisty and it was entertaining to watch her come into her own. She has a good sense of humor and is willing to forgive but isn't a doormat in any sense.
.
Talon is a shifter, and in this book a shifter can shift into any animal. The shifters are edgy in this world and aggressive and dominate. Talon is an alpha and has a childhood tragedy that he is struggling with so he doesn't give into emotion very often.

The romance was good although they fell in love in a matter of 4 days. I liked the world building, there are shifters, vampires, phage (which are kind of like vampires and kind of like zombies), a god-like race and psyke (which we don't learn a lot about in this book). There is a lot of action and all the female characters (the villain, the head vampire and the h are really strong women and interesting characters.)

I was thoroughly entertained and will definitely be reading the next book about Jame (who was a part of Talon's team)and the vampire (Drake) who wants her.

This book was provided free from net galley in exchange for a fair review.

You all know how much I love the paranormal! This was good, I mean really good. It starts a little gruesome though. There are some murders committed by someone or thing. They lead, Gossip mag reporter, Sera Benenati to investigate in an effort to make herself a name as a serious reporter. You can already see where this is going to be bad and possibly good! Her investigation brings her into contact with Special Agent Talon Red who becomes her protector, along with his team, when determines that the murders are linked to Sera.
As I said this was a really good read and there is more than enough supernatural beings for anyone to enjoy. In fact there were even some that I have never heard of which actually adds to the plot rather than taking away. I was afraid that with some many different beings the story would end up hard to follow. It wasn't and this had plenty of romance and action which I found I enjoyed.

This was my first from this author, and the first in a new series. I was pleasantly surprised. There are quite a few paranormals to wrap your brain around but in the end it gets explained quite well. I liked Sera, she was spunky and had a good sense of humor. Talon was as alpha as they come and I really enjoyed him coming to terms with emotion. There is quite story weaved in this book, that I hope will carry on to the next book and keep all our characters in play as I enjoyed them all, Jame, Bull, Strife, Drake and even Slick. If you are looking for a fun solid paranormal romance pick this up, it will keep you interested throughout and ends happily….but open for more.

A new paranormal series by author Tina Moss has you wondering what is going on from beginning to end as she throws curves one after another! With twists and secrets from every angle the characters don’t know what the truth is, who the bad guy is or what everyone is! Vampires, wolves, light energy beings and what the heck is the phage!

Tina Moss creates a society where paranormals are classified into three groups and subjected to registration and monitored by paranormal agencies. But what happens when beings that have existed for centuries are not known about but are now making appearances? You get chaos! With a bit of mass murder what could be more exciting, right?

Special Agent Talon Rede is the leader of a group of paranormals who work for the Paranormal Crimes Division and they are trying to solve a murder that was obviously done by a paranormal but not one they don’t recognize from the registration. While in the midst of this, he gets a call from a journalist Sera Benenati asking questions regarding this murder. Usually not one to take time for such a thing, Talon Rede finds himself bantering back and forth with Sera for some time and then can’t seem to forget her or she him.

When Sera is provided a lead she finds herself surrounded by these “creatures” and her only way to survive is to give herself over to the voice in her head. Sera is a paranormal, the problem is that she doesn’t know what she is or why there is a guy talking to her inside her own head! She just knows that she can’t let him take over or situations could turn ugly quickly.

When Sera is found to be the only survivor of a mass murder, Rede is shocked to say the least. He tries to act as if she is a witness without ruling out suspect but his instinct is to protect her. When the two find that is best to work together, they are embroiled in a convoluted mess of which faction of paranormals is good and who is the bad guy. They may have to change up what they have always believed if they are to survive.

As secrets come to light, Sera and Rede fight to save the world of the phage. You will have to read to find of if they succeed, find out who is behind the phange, and if they finally admit they are mates! This is just the beginning as Code Black is followed by Red Alert.

Paranormal fiction is genre based upon imagination to the extreme and this is one series I am looking forward to following. I did receive this eBook as a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy:

CODE BLACK had a lot of things going for it, and luckily by the end it came together; it just took a while. When the story finally hit it's stride though, it was a pretty wild ride.

In this world, everyone knows about the supernatural, and the PCD (Paranormal Crime Division) is in charge of policing it. Agents who are shifters (interesting beings who can shift into ANY animal), vampires and fey work together to stop the more rogue elements of the supernatural world, like the phage, a vampire-zombie-like group with a hive-mind and a hunger for flesh. They were cool, with jaws that open and unhinge from their heads, and they were pretty evil too.

A few things bugged me about the characters, though. I was at least a third of the way through, and no one had told the truth about anything to anyone else. I know miscommunication is a staple in romance novels, but this is a bit ridiculous. Sera lies to everyone about her powers and the scary voice in her head, her father lies to the PCD about protecting her, Talon, the shifter leader of the local PCD branch, lies about his feelings for Sera (over and over) and so on. It became repetitive and I was glad when things finally started coming out in the open and the plot could move along.

Some of the writing was a awkward at times. Scenes happenned at the same time, so that readers are being dragged back a few minutes as different members catch up to the rest of the team. Still, with the team being quite large, it was nice to have them split up, giving readers a chance to meet them in a more intimate setting.

Overall, I enjoyed the phage and the interesting take on shifters, and the book sets up the series quite well. I think I'll pick up the next one to see if they get to the bottom of the phage threat and to find out what happens to a few interesting secondary characters (Drake, a smartass vampire with interesting connections, was tons of fun!).

As an unregistered supernatural, Sera Benenati has to keep her fire-wielding abilities contained but as a journalist, she’s determined to land a top spot with a real paper even if she needs special agent Talon Rede’s help in this exciting paranormal romance.

Sera thought she landed the perfect scoop but she may have smoked out more than she can burn and the reader can’t help but get drawn into all the excitement as Sera and Talon learns that the murders were just a smokescreen. The chemistry between Talon and Sera rocks both of their worlds and the sex scenes are hot and steamy but the relationship is unstable ground that could give way to ashes as there is personal demons that get in the way. Strong, compelling characters grab your attention right away and refuse to let go as the fast paced and smooth flowing plot thrills readers with lots of suspense, action and romance.

Expectation builds lots of tension throughout the story as the investigation soon reveals that there is way more to the mysterious deaths than meets the eye and involves unknown supernaturals with adrenaline pumping excitement growing as the danger escalates and Talon and Sera soon discover she is the target and that it has something to do with her mysterious fire-wielding abilities. The scenes are well written with vivid details that capture the imagination and bring the story to life while the well-orchestrated events draw the reader in and ensure that there is never a dull moment.

Tina Moss has created a fascinating world with some interesting and different elements which has certainly caught my attention and there was no way I could put this story down once I began, it was one intriguing surprise after another along with all the exciting action and attractive characters and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I absolutely loved this book. I needed something different and I found it.

Talon and Sera were made for each other. And all the action that follows them is great. Not a dull moment in the story.

Sera knows she is not fully human, but has no idea what else she is. She is a student taking journalism in college and gets lucky enough to land a phone interview with the top agent in the PCD. It is pretty much lust and first sound. Sera can't seem to get his voice out of her head, and doesn't really want to.

Agent Talon Rede is one of the top agents in his field. He doesn't normally talk with the press, but decides to take this phone call. And again, same with Talon, lust at first sound. These two do eventually meet, but not under the circumstances they would prefer. Sera has this voice in her head that has always been there for as long as she can remember. When she finds herself in trouble she merges with this voice and tends to black out and not remember what happens.

Little do these two know they are looking for the same person. Action follows them everywhere, I loved it. Talon and Sera, with the help of the PCD team and one very hot vampire, Drake, find what they are looking for.

Talon and Sera have to learn to trust each other and throughout the story that trust is definitely tested. Sera never really learned to trust anyone. How could she with the voice in her head always there telling her what to do and what not to do. Talon, with his work first and only policy, doesn't like that he wants to make sure Sera is safe no matter what. The sparks between these two is fabulous and I love the banter between all the characters. In the end it all works and I love it. I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series

Sera Benenati is a reporter trying to get herself out the gossip magazines and into a real paper. She’s investigating a series of strange murders linked to SUBS (Supernatural or Undead Beings).
Talon is the lead investigator for the PCD on the mysterious murders. He is contacted by reporter trying to find out more about the case. Talon can’t seem to get over his attraction to the female report. With another gruesome crime scene, He finds out there is a survivor, the Reporter Sera Benenati. See her only makes his need for grow, but as time passes she becomes a suspect in the ever growing mystery.
Code Black is paranormal romance/urban fantasy story. The first half of the book dealt more with development of the plot not any sort of relationship between the two main characters. The first half of the book dealt more with development of the plot not any sort of relationship between the two main characters. Yes, they are both drawn to each other. You see it predominantly with Talon as he tries to control his shifter urges. Sera struggles to hide a secret. She has a unique ability. As the story unfolded I found myself riveted to have my questions answered. It was a great read with a possibility of it becoming a series.

I really dislike when I don't love a book. I hate having to write about what made it bad for me and I hate trying to decide what star rating to give it in the end.

I had a really hard time getting into CODE BLACK. The first thing that pops into my mind on how to explain it to you is this. You know when you are watching a sub-par movie and the actors sound like they are reading a script instead of actually living what they are saying? That is exactly how CODE BLACK read to me. It made it very hard to enjoy the events that were happening and I couldn't really connect with the characters because it all felt fake. It got a little better as the book went on, but I still couldn't connect with the characters and let's face it, if you don't care about the characters, you are going to struggle with the story.

Because I just wasn't into it, I drifted a lot while reading CODE BLACK. I don't know if its because of this, but I had a hard time following all the characters and mythology involved in the story. There seemed like there were way more questions than answers and I found myself confused at times. I am pretty positive that I won't be continuing with this series.

Sera Benenati is a reporter on a gossip magazine and also an unregistered supernatural. and doe everything she can to hide her fire wielding abilities. Determined to make it onto a real newspaper she starts to track a string of paranormal murders in Buckhorn Arizona she is convinced she'll get a scoop but when torn flesh, bitten and battered bodies are part of a crime scene she may have taken on more than she bargained for especially when she ends up being a target too. Can sexy shifter and special agent Talon Rede work out the murderers before Sera becomes the next victim?

This was a great story with lots of drama and excitement all centred around Sera. The intertwining of the relationship between Sera and Talon as well as the good guys and the bad guys mixed into the mystery of the murders and their reason was well done and enjoyable to read. A great start to the series which promises good things going forward.

I was gifted a copy of this book for review.
Definitely a different take on the supernatural. I was entranced by this storyline. Sera is hiding from her demons unsure of who and what she is and a part of her is terrified to find out. She is forced to unleash her inner force once viscous creatures begin coming out of the woodwork trying to kill her.
Talon is a sexy shifter but also the leader of the PCD. It is his job to protect however he can't let his emotions enter the equation. He has his own demons to deal with. Something about Sera brings out more than he is willing to admit to.
As the threats to her life mount they become closer.
One of my favorite things about this story is the secondary characters. The unlikely allies and witty banter really add to the story. I honestly adore Drake and hope to see more of him and Jame.

Code Black - Tina Moss - 4 Stars

Sara is a reporter and an unregistered supernatural, she isn't quite sure what type of supernatural she is, she tries her best to keep her abilities hidden but things really aren't going her way. Then along comes Talon, she tries to keep her distance from him, however with everything going on, she has no hope.

This has to be one of my favourite genres and I enjoyed this supernatural read, it's full of Vampires, Shifters, Phages and more. This book is certainly well written however, for me I felt I was missing that special connection with the main characters. This book does has a different feel and uniqueness to the usual supernatural books that I've read.

Sera has always known she was different. She is a reporter and went to interview a victim's sister. All the sudden she's surrounded by these creatures. She lets lose her power and leaves nothing but ash. She wakes up in the hospital and Talon is there. He is the leader of PCD and investigating the death of 22 people but Sera was the only survivor. Talon can shift into any animal and he knows Sera is special to him. Now she's got phages, vampires, and other creatures that go bump in the night, after her and Talon will do anything to protect her.
This story was a little hard to get into. A little confusing. But I would probably read the next one.

Good Story and Characters Talon was an agent for the PCD and also the leader of his division and a shifter. Sera could call fire from her body and was learning to control it. Talon was as attracted to Sera as she was to him. Then Sera was kidnapped.
This was an excellent plot and overall story. The characters were off the wall, especially Talon and Sera, who had so much to go through, and how they grew. I loved it. I highly recommend to anyone that likes this genre.

I really enjoyed the banter between Sera and Guy! I mean how many main characters have a voice in their head guiding them?!

Genre:  Romance, Sci-fi and Fantasy

This sounded a fun read and I’m always hoping for a new series that I can fall in love with....but first books in a fantasy series have a huge task. They need to introduce new characters, different paranormals, a new world setting and of course deliver a gripping story. For me this book didn’t quite make it – there’s promise there but I’m torn over whether I want to read more. I think on balance there’s enough there for me to put aside my reservations and read at least one more book before choosing.
Sera, we see right from the start she’s different, and I felt for her because she was so alone ( apart from Guy!), and there’s no-one to tell her what she feels is right or wrong or how to control her powers. Its a world where many Supernaturals are registered and recognized, but she’s a type no-one seems to know about and she’s always been told by her dad to keep quiet, to never show she’s different.
Then she’s on the scene as part of a lead on a gruesome story and gets dragged right into it. It brings her to the notice of special agent Talon Rede and his colleagues. There’s a connection between the two right from their first conversation – and that’s simply a phone one!
The issues I had were that there were so many types of paranormals, and so many different departments and groups. It took til at least halfway through the book before I could even begin to get them clear in my mind, and there was lots of flipping back to see who belonged to which group. They seems so disorganised too – with everyone treading on the others toes, no-one sure of who’s really in charge. For a specialist group Talon’s crew are not at all what I’d expect, instead of a tight knit group of close colleagues who respect each other and work seamlessly, they’re a shambolic bunch who seem to dislike many of the others in the group, and things get done more by accident than design. I could take most of that though if it wasn’t for my pet hate, Powers we’ve never heard of coming into play to get people out of an impossible spot just at the right moment. All Supernaturals in fiction have a bit extra talent, its what makes the genre such a fun read and each author tailors the format, but here it seems like some people have abilities to cover almost every situation, and it takes the excitement, the danger element out when you know that one of them will always be able to handle it.  There was a bit too much of that – the hand waving moving air currents to get things/people just where they needed to be, that kind of problem solving. Then there’s Sera’s handy fire, she gained some pretty accurate control over that very quickly. I need the characters to struggle a bit, to use their talents certainly but not this catch all magic fixes we saw here.
Stars:Three, a decent read with some fresh elements but I’ve reservations about the series.
