Enthralling Story of Forbidden Love in Tumultuous 18th Century Ireland
Originally published under the title “NIGHTWYLDE” by Kimberleigh Caitlin, this is a beautifully written story with a compelling hero and a wonderful heroine. You will not be disappointed. The author has now republished it under her more well known name of Kimberly Cates.
Set in Donegal, Ireland in 1718, it is the story of wealthy English Protestant Maryssa Wylder and poor Irish Catholic Tade Kilcannon, the heir of a proud Irish family dispossessed of their title and their ancestral lands by the English. He is known to only a few as the masked patriot, the Black Falcon, who raids the British to help and protect the Irish. To everyone else, handsome Tade appears as only a rakehell known for his drinking and his female conquests. He takes no woman seriously until he meets the beautiful, unloved and innocent Maryssa, who has been banished from the English court for objecting to heinous torture of a young woman.
Both are the victims of their fathers’ anger: Tade’s father is disappointed in his rakehell heir (knowing nothing about his escapades as the Black Falcon), and Maryssa’s father hates her for her mother’s supposed infidelity. In addition, Tade’s father hates Maryssa’s father for all he stole from the Kilcannons. The undercurrents of tension are rife as are the dangers swirling around the young lovers as Tade responds to the desperate longing for love he sees in Maryssa, and she responds to his tender loving and kind words, something she has never had.
Tade stands as the strong defender of his people; and Maryssa, once a shy and retiring girl, becomes a fiercely courageous woman who will fight for the man she loves.
It’s a beautiful and poignant love story, very well told and very exciting, set against the tumultuous time in Ireland’s history when the English treated the Irish brutally: Catholics could not hold titles of nobility; they could not own land in their own country; they could not educate their children (except in secret as Tade’s parents did); and they could not practice their faith or have their priests (Tade’s brother Devlin, a priest, is hunted by the English).
I highly recommend this one!
In case you’re curious, the author wrote three historicals under the name Kimberleigh Caitlin (I now own all):
SKY OF ASHES, SEA OF FLAMES (1987) NIGHTWYLDE (1988) WILDWITCH (1991)
DNF 42% There was nothing particularly terrible about this book, it was just a little bit too everything. A little too slow, unnecessarily wordy, a bit too unrealistic, way too instalove, and the characters bordered on obnoxious. Okay, that sounds terrible. It really wasn't. It just wasn't my cup of tea. When the thought of finishing the book makes you think, "Ugh do I haaaave to?", you should probably just put it down. Step away from the book. Pick up a different one.
If I wanted an account of the horrific oppression, torture and massacres committed against the Irish people I would read serious fiction or a history book. Historical romances should only contain false or easily resolvable conflicts and melodrama, thanks.
I am sorry I had to give this story 2 stars. But this is just so depressing Falcon/Tade Kilcannon Irish Catholic and the Protestant Maryssa Wylder says it all. It was the 1718 when the British were still persecuting the Catholics by horrific means. Torture of unspeakable degrees, burning children alive at the stake, disembowelment with the cutting off of the private parts hanged to near death first then quartered a treasonous death. For this death all you had to do was be Irish and or Catholic. There lands were taken crops and cattle or game stolen, beaten and oppressed. WOW what a story to read especially in the atmosphere I live in the U.S. today!! This couple went through H just because they loved one another and the politics of hatred racial and religious bigotry said No you can't be together. The story has many episodes were Ms. Cates, the author could have given them some hope or something of a happy event. But No !! When they do get together it's under the worst conditions and events they go through that there is really No HEA. Then the story basically ends the Villains who have done horrible things to them and to the Irish people, merely just get killed by Falcon and his Lady Maryssa. His name was Ascot Dollywoulde and he kicked Falcons behind and killed his brother Devin the nice kind young man who was a Priest.
I Needed some revenge on the enemies, something as horrific as they were dealing out, but on every turn and every opportunity for the couple or the Irish people to win just one fight never occurred and then the story was over!! THANK GOD THIS BOOK WAS FREE!! or I would have returned it. In any love story there has to be some victories and some hope. I couldn't find it in this one and I kept reading in hopes that something good would happen soon!!
This is a Very Depressing, Sad story!! I Cant Recommend it!!
A story about an English Lady who because of some trouble at a ball is sent to her father's castle. The English want to rid the Irish of their Catholic religion by taking away their property, forbidding them to teach their children or practice their religion. She gets involved with a loving Irish family and the problems these people have just living. Great story with a little history thrown in.
Maryssa Wylder has never known love or kindness, her mother died when she was a baby and her father has removed everyone from her life who's shown her any attention, despite this she's grown to be a lovely, intelligent and quiet young lady. She finds herself banished to Ireland for objecting to the torture of a young woman but this turns out to be the best thing that's ever happened to her and it's here she truly blossoms. Tade Kilcannon hates the Wylders after all they stole his birthright but Maryssa is the first woman he can't walk away from, her innocence and the hurt that radiates from her calls to him and he can't resist. This is a long story and if I'm being honest it was a little too long in places for me I did find myself skimming at times and the subject matter is depressing a bit too much for me in what I expected to be a nice gentle romance but the picture it paints is one of unbelievable suffering and pain. Life for the Irish at this time was bleak, they couldn't own property or titles, educate their children, they weren't even allowed to have priests or religion. Set against this background of suffering love grows between Tade and Maryssa but it's forbidden love and neither of them can see how it could possibly end well.
I enjoyed reading Black Falcon's Lady. Even during war times love still blossoms.
Black Falcon's Lady is a story of love and fearsome hate, when England had it in their mind to concord Ireland. Black Falcon's Lady is a peak into the reality of broken promises, the loss of old friendships, unspeakable cruelty to human beings, and still love finds a way to bring family closer together. I enjoyed reading Black Falcon's Lady, it was too interesting to put it down. I believe all ages of people will enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
Loved this story. Strong warriors showing there emotions with tears and showing affection physically. (Not by sex). Even though there is a little sex, the story line is superb. I enjoy a book with good plots and suspense. Descriptions of Ireland landscapes is detail but not boring. I recommended this book.
This book just didn't work for me, the story just seemed to drag on and on without much happening, you had the instalove and the yes no, go away I hate you, can't trust you, oh wait I caught my breath on second thought, oh I love you can't live without you...blah...just blah.
Well done Kimberly Cates. A heart worthy story about two people caught up in sociatal dictates and two hearts finding a way to be one while battling pressure from all sides to make their love for each other work. Loved it! Bring tissues before you start reading.

I would reccomend this book to anyone that needs adventure, hope and romance!
I was introduced to Maryssa and Tade after reading the 'Black Falcon's Christmas' as part of a Christmas anthology and instantly fell in love with the couple as they continued to struggle for acceptance, as a result I was eager to see how their story began and was simply BLOWN AWAY!! Cates is an incredibly talented writer revealing a snap shot of Irish history that stays with you not just because of the horrors described but in the small acts of clandestine defiance and bitter-sweet rebellion of the Irish people as they struggled to survive against the hateful, opressive laws of the English. The plot was packed full of heart pumping adventure, laced with explosive chemistry and love, whilst being shadowed in a thick cloak of torment and horrific opression that couldn't help but fuel my interest, absorbing me until the last page. The prejustices Tade and Maryssa's love had to defy will really tear at your heart strings making you cry and swoon in equal measure. As a result Tade Kilcannon is now cemented as one of my all time swoon worthy heroes. LOVED IT!! - Maryssa and Tade are the Irish Claire and Jamie Fraser (of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander), only without the time travelling. Well worth the read you won't be disappointed.
The premise was good but the delivery was lacking. I almost didn't finish this book. In a nutshell, it was too wordy, containing more information than was needed to tell the story. It made for a slow and at times boring read. Still, I carried on and finished it. Some parts were really good but there weren't enough of those. Also, the bad guys were so very bad that they were unrealistic. I really didn't care for the amount of religious persecution that was in this story. Did it happen? Oh yes, the religious persecution of the Irish Catholics is historical fact. I just don't feel it needed to be such a prominent part of the story. This is just my opinion and others may not feel the same as I do.
This book has managed to wring some thoughts and emotions that would probably swing my ratings from 4 to 5 stars. Historical romances such as this may or may not be accurate as to the timeline but the Irish persecution and diaspora were most definitely and tragically real. Books and the net has made it easily available to readers to know more about history and what England did to suppress Irish Catholics at that time. This, for me, is most definitely NOT a light read. It is heart~warming as well as heart~wrenching and gut~wrenching in places where they need to be; and since it has managed to wring all three from me, then this book has truly achieved its purpose.
I saw the cover of this book and once it caught my eye i downloaded a sample. Hooked in the storyline i purchased the book. I have never read any of this authors books but i am now a follower. This book was additive from the first chapter, I couldn't stop reading its , even until the early hours of the morning. I read alot of highlander and medieval books and this my favourite of all of them. The characters and storyline were intriguing and so well described that you felt as if you were there. It was not only a fantastic read but a realistic story of the times. It should rate as at least an 8. Now set to download next book
While this book gives a look at what the Irish suffered under English rule, it leaves much to be desired. I think my largest complaint was the main characters sleeping together and everyone knows, but nobody really cares. Um, this is Ireland, these people are Catholic. They didn't do that sort of thing. It was called immoral, and it is still and always will be, a mortal sin. So somebody who has a priest for a brother would never behave like that. And really, that is one problem out of many for this book. Oh yes, and I don't recommend it.
I liked it although I was sometimes confused between the names of the leading men...Devin is so often the name of the lover :) Maura's and Tade's story was a whirlwind of action. The author provided colorful depictions of the period and I could envision scenes almost as if I was viewing on the big screen. It took me a long while to complete the book through no fault of the author. The book was a kindle edition and when I was tired of working on the computer, I was not enthused to read a book via this medium also. All in all a good read.
The story took several twists and turns and I was a little surprised that I liked started to like Maryssa/Maura as the story went on. At first all the tears was a bit grating, but with all she went thru, understandable. The falcon of course was a strong hero and loved his character. I tested up a few times reading this book, and expect others may as well.
I wanted to love this book based on its blurb, but it's bogged down in so much over description that I struggled to pick the story out of the adjectives. After several hours reading I decided to check the reviews to see if this was unique to my reading experience, and it isn't. Reading shouldn't be this hard. I read at least one book a day and based on my kindle, this book would take me 12 hours to read. Just not worth it.
The Irish have been torn from all that that was rightfully theirs, from critters to Lord's. Even education and their beloved Catholicism have been outlawed by the Anglo Saxons. Their homes given over to the enemy, they now struggle to survive. Against that background, so graphically drawn, a young couple comes to know each other. They're from different countries and their fathers are enemies. Will they have a chance to love each other? Must read!
In my previous read" Morning Song" I rated it incorrectly! Notice after I submitted review. Should be highest rating and beyond! Can't wait to purchase more of you writings! Tap away on those keys! I have been once again pulled into these characters lives! Great read! Thank you! Avid Fan👍📖
So much love and so much hate. That sums up what this book is about. Love between an Irish Catholic and an English Protestant is not supposed to happen but it does and the consequences make excellent reading and tears at times. Well written and historical content is good.
Not just a romantic novel, but a well constructed depiction of the struggle that began between the Irish and English over religious differences. The strife of the classes and sexes was clearly defined for the time period. This was a an intense but enveloping read.
The first book I’ve read from author Kimberly Cates. A bit unbelievable how fast and hard our hero falls for the heroine. And hard to wrap my head around the cruel unattached father, and menacing cousin. Never the less a great historical romance! Never count yourself out on getting that happy ending!
