From the pages of Itty Bitty Comics! comes Grimmiss Island! When the Volcano Goddess threatens the Mama Woogees' tiny island, only little Grimmiss can save the day! This wacky yarn has it all: hot lava, lost love, and witch doctors! Don't even get us started on the angry cactus, the screenwriting armadillo, and the strange disturbance that has awakened the island's tiki monoliths! When you're little guy with a skull head, there's adventure around every corner! From the Eisner Award-winning creative minds of Art Baltazar and Franco! Tropical drinks not included.
Feels a bit like coming in in the middle of a story in progress, but pretty easy to follow nonetheless. I love how cute everyone is, even the grumpy cactus! Some basic knowledge of Spanish will help, but is not required.
I really enjoyed the artwork and the lava goddess. But I have to admit it was rather annoying having to constantly look up translations for what Grimmis was saying all the time.
Two "Mama Woogie" witch doctors create a creature named Grimmiss to save their island from the Volcano Goddess. VG falls very much "in love" with Grimmiss, and everyone is happy for awhile. That is, till it wakes the Tiki's from their 1000-year sleep, and they're unhappy campers. They drown the Tiki's, and things seem normal for awhile. That is, until the Grim Reaper and the Devil decide to visit, and "harm" Grimmiss, causing VG to be very angry. However, Grimmiss comes around, taking care of business, and everything goes back to normal.
This was a fun little read. And, the art was very colorful. I enjoyed it very much.
I love Baltazar and Franco's art and as always this was a feast for the eyes. I have a special thing for skulls so found Grimmiss and the whole theme here to be spectacularly drawn. I just loved the Pajamazons too! However, I didn't find it that funny. It was annoying that Grimmiss spoke only in Spanish (and briefly French) with no subtitles so I never knew what the heck he was saying. It wasn't important as others suggested what he might have said, but he would have been a better character had he had gag lines and important things to say. Really fantastic art but I'd hoped for a better and funnier story.
Even by Art and Franco standard, this is an odd little comic. A tropical island needs a guardian, so the tiki wizards decide to create one. Some jalapeños dropped into the cauldron result in the energetic, skull head Grimm Miss.
There is a lava goddess, tiki giants, and a talking cactus. So quirky, strange and entertaining.
I want there to be a cartoon and action figures of these guys!
Funnier than I expected it to be, given my extensive experience with Tiny Titans. I'd never heard of Grimmiss before, but he's quite a distinct character!
