You know how they say the enemy of your enemy is your friend? Well, I'm still determining if there's any truth to that statement.
I was used by the Feds to report on the dealings of Antonio Herrera - the major Mexican crime lord since his uncle passed, leaving everything to Antonio. I knew everything about Antonio's business. How, you ask? I was the only woman he kept close, really close - he claimed he loved me. You get to see and hear a lot of interesting things when you hold that kind of status.
Now, the Feds have me in what they claim is witness protection. However, I never feel safe knowing he's out there. My family thinks I'm dead. All the while, I keep to myself, avoid most people in my new hometown and train rigorously everyday—waiting for the time when the devil comes calling for his debt to be paid.
***This is the first book in a two book series. This book should be read prior to the second book.
After the age of thirty, Martha realized that her life as a terran was not what it was cracked up to be. Knowing that there was more to life, she embarked on a journey that has tested her resolve, heart, and soul many times over. It continues to do so at this very moment.
She’s astounded that anyone takes any author bio seriously. Why would anything that’s written here be believed when authors are known to invent stuff out of thin air? Martha likes to thank the ether and her higher-self for the enlightenment and odd sense of wonderment about life, the universe, and what exactly she was thinking when she wrote that one obscure story that no one has yet to read, but her husband has heard about.
The oddity of society, particularly the book community has flabbergasted her, making her curious about how a em-dash or ellipses can make people think that AI had any hand in aiding an author to write. She could be sharing complete truths, complete lies, or a mixture in this very bio as you continue to read this. Why are you still reading this, she asks in your ear as if she’s sitting right next to you, right now? Does anyone really care if she’s telling the truth, I mean, come on, she’s an author for God sake? Books are written to pull you from reality with fantasy, though there is much of reality in books to some extent. Where was she going with this thought? I don’t know, don’t remember, so let us continue. What were we discussing? Oh, right, Martha Sweeney’s author bio.
She would like to sum up with this single thought: believe what you want about anything, even her. Beliefs are just thoughts you keep thinking. Whether you think you’re wrong or right, you’re right either way, so why should she care what’s written in her bio because we both know you just want a story that makes you feel. That’s the purpose of books or any form of entertainment. It’s to feel something. She hopes your emotions are kicked in the ass one way or another. If you like a character, she’s content. If you hate a character, she’s content. All in all, she made you feel.
If you’re still reading this, Martha is quite impressed and is giving you an astral projected hug and hopes to meet you in person one day, or not. According to Martha, we’ve already meet if you understand entanglement.
If you are literally thinking, or saying out loud WTF?, Martha wants you to know that very same thought has entered her mind at least twenty times while dictating to me what to write. Whom am I, you ask, that’s not important. My roll is simply to write Martha’s author bio and let you know that she’s a multi-genre author, so there’s a chance you might be interested and like at least one of her currently published books. Enjoy, or not, that’s up to you.

Killmore was fun to write and I hope all of you who read it enjoy it. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I'd like to say a huge thank you to the following people: Tom (my hubby), Laurie Breitsprecher (yes, she's a real person), Nikki, Elisa, and all of the Sex Kittens! <3

I was really excited to get my hands on this book as soon as I read the blurb. However, while I was reading the book I realized the story took a different direction than I thought it would. First of all I was expecting a different love interest for the female character. That was the main reason why I wanted to read this book. Also I was expecting a suspenseful and action packed story, which in my opinion was not the case. What I got was a somewhat of a contemporary romance with an annoying female character. The beginning of the story was really good. It set up an expectation for me that was not delivered. Three quarters of the book had a very slow pace with almost no action. As for the love interest, I didn't like the guy at all. He was a bit on the soft side, the woman was more of an alpha than he was. His actions weren't attractive at all. I didn't feel any connection with and between the characters, which made it really difficult for me to get into the story. I did enjoy the side characters especially the best friend and her sons. I would love for her to get her own story.
The main reason this book didn't work for me was because of my expectations. I was expecting a very suspenseful story and when I didn't get it, I lost interest real quick. I wasn't in the mood for a slow paced contemporary romance. This book just didn't work for me. But that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it! (There are a lot of five star reviews).
What do you do when your in Witness Protection and the FBI can't even keep you safe from the man that Haunts your Dreams ?
That is exactly the Suspenseful , Action Packed , Pull your hair out emotionally ,Intense Ride you will be taken on , once you open Martha Sweeney's Killmore.
My heart was racing within the first few chapters and I couldn't flip the pages fast enough .
I loved Laurie , she is such a STRONG Female Character, even after everything she's been through ,she's scared and doesn't trust easily. She knows not to look to anyone else to keep her safe ....the last thing she needs is a man.... a man undercover , who cant give away much information and she doesn't trust. But is he the one she should be watchful of or the demons from her past moving in on the sidelines?
The way the Author keeps you in limbo, so you never really know what's going to happen next ,because of all the twists she throws at you is amazing. I enjoyed reading the fact that Laurie still held all the cards in a slow building relationship with Aiden. The Snarky comments that were thrown back and forth between them were funny and sometimes bittersweet ,but I loved the way they always kept each other wanting .. although never really giving to much of themselves away....you felt their Love building , but would that be enough to keep them safe ?. If you love Action- packed, suspenseful romance that will end in a Cliffhanger and leave you Breathlessly wanting more ...then you've found the right book.
I love it. Hard to put down, love the character. This book had my heart pounding the plot is interesting and unpredictable. It will keep you guessing till the end. Can't wait to see how things turn out in the next one.
Laurie is one of the strongest female characters that I've come across. She's been through hell and back and who she is today is because of it. Love all the characters and the dogs. There are times when Laurie's stubborness is too much and you just want to grab her and give her a shake. Looking forward to reading the 2nd book to find out what happens because you know something will.
I had the honor of reading a very early release of the latest novel by the very talented Martha Sweeney entitled, Killmore. What a ride! Right out of the gate the action starts and never lets up! I'm a guy, so that got my attention right away. Martha has grown in her story-telling prowess considerably. She kept me riveted to each page throughout the entire book...and that ending! Did not see that coming! I love the depth of each character, especially the supporting cast. They make the story much more believable. All the twists and turns had my head spinning trying to keep up and the heat between the main characters was palpable. I'm ready for the next installment right now! The Killmores can't be written fast enough! Read Killmore by Martha Sweeney at you own risk...the risk of being addicted to Martha's fantastic imagination!
Leia is working undercover with the FBI to bring down a sex traffic ring which her husband Jack, a cop, is mixed up in. I have to start by saying that Jack is a dirty, dirty cop and he is the reason Leia is determined to get this sting with the FBI over with, they will give her the divorce and protection she needs in order to get away from her abusive husband. Of course things do not go according to plan but that doesn't effect Leia because she is finally free of her husband.
Once placed into protective custody Leia becomes Laurie a successful business owner, somewhat of a recluse, and a total bad-ass! The saying goes "What doesn't kill you will make you stronger" and Laurie embodies that statement completely. She works hard to keep herself in tip top shape in case she ever finds her self in a sticky situation she'll have the power and knowledge to help keep her protected.
Laurie has been doing an excellent job of not letting anyone get close to her other than Trudy, her two boys, and the Lenards, an elderly couple that she adores, she hasn't even let Dr. Codie a man she has been sleeping with on and off for two years now in, she uses him for sex and nothing more regardless of his feelings for her. I actually felt bad for the guy until Aiden comes to town and I quickly realized that he was the one for her.
Aiden and Paul are in town posing as father and son but when Laurie meets them she knows there's more than meets the eye with these two. And boy, oh boy is there! I absolutely LOVED Aiden, that man is sex on a stick! YUM....anyway, I digress, Paul and Aiden need to get close to Laurie but she doesn't trust anyone especially the FBI.
I loved watching the attraction between Laurie and Aiden grow despite her insistence that she was going to use him for sex only, something that he agrees to without hesitation, their relationship may have started out as a cover - but before Laurie knew what was happening things changed. This story had so much going on, not only the romance of Laurie and Aiden, the friendships that were cultivated, but the suspense of not knowing what was going to happen next, who were the good guys and the bad ones, it was a great all encompassing story that I didn't want to end. And the ENDING....OH MY! I cannot wait for The Killmores to come out.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book given to me by the author, this is a completely honest and non-incentivized review**
*ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review* "You become a changed person when you face the reaper and deny him your soul." This was my fourth novel by Martha and I massively enjoyed it! These characters quickly had me falling in love with them and have yet to let me g, they might just be my favorite yet! It seems as if their grip only tightened after reading the last word in this book. I need the second book so bad, I am going crazy! This book follows Laurie, a woman in witness protection, and Aiden who is a fed. We get both of their point of views and I didn't know what to expect from these characters, or anyone, at all. I didn't know who to trust which kept me on my toes. This made my reading experience a memorable one. I absolutely loved Laurie's friendship with Trudy. For a side character, Trudy managed to steal my love almost instantaneously as well as the others. I can't wait to read more about her as well! Laurie is super strong-headed when it comes to love and definitely gave Aiden a run for his money. Her past made my heart ache because it was so dark. I don't wish her experiences on anyone and since she felt so real to me, I felt like a close friend of mine was going through it. For a moment there, I didn't know if I was able to make it to the end of the book because of how hard it impacted me. Aiden was just the best male character ever! I loved his personality and everything else. He's hilarious and just all around amazing. I completely enjoyed watching their relationship change from the start. One of the comments I have is that I didn't like how for a woman in witness protection, too many people seemed to know who she really was. I thought NOBODY was supposed to know your real identity, ever, no matter what? I also seemed to foresee some things that were about to happen or be revealed which made certain events fall under 'anti-climactic'. Anyway, no matter what book you read from Martha, you can always expect some insanely strong females and some amazing men. Laurie was no exception with the savage mouth on her and her strong will; she was a force to be reckoned with and I absolutely admired her for it. A lot of Aiden's actions made me ache with jealousy because I didn't have him in MY life. The book had an amazing beginning, a slow middle, but a crazy end. The last few chapters made me tear up so much and made my heart pound like crazy. I am so attached to these two that I am counting down the minutes until the release for book 2!
I had the pleasure to receive an advance copy of Killmore. Its the first book that I've read by Martha Sweeney and I must say I will be reading more, having already added book 2 to my TBR list.
One of my pet peeves when reading is a weak female lead and Martha's leading lady, Laurie/ Leia is anything but weak. She has written Laurie to be one of the strongest female characters I think I have ever read. Laurie is strong-willed, stubborn, sarcastic, quick witted, and independent. She is also very hardened emotionally due to past events of her life. I immediately felt drawn to her.
Bring in Aiden. Sexy, hot Aiden! He is the perfect match for Laurie. He is patient, but just as stubborn and sarcastic as she is. The dance between these two is drawn out perfectly. Laurie, encased in a brick wall and Aiden slowing tearing down those bricks.
One of my favourite quotes from the book, fits Laurie perfectly....
"There's always a small piece that flickers with light no matter how much darkness has covered it."
The sexual tension and angst is well written and left me very emotionally attached to these characters, in a way that I haven't been in a long time. And the sex scenes are scorching!!!
There is tons of action and the overall plot is awesome and well thought out. The story line flows, keeping the reader engaged!
The only issues that I had with the book was the beginning and the end!!!
First the beginning....I didn't quite feel the strong relationship between Leia, Jack and Antonio, however this obsession may come into play further in the 2nd book.
Now the end....I would have loved to have seen more of a cliff hanger. I actually hate cliff hangers but I think Killmore could have had a really gasp worthy one. While I didn't hate this ending, Ms. Sweeney definitely has the talent to write one that could have left me breathless and anxiety ridden while desperately awaiting book 2.
Leia wants a divorce, she also wants the Authorities to help and get her out of the current hell she is living in. Leia’s soon to be ex-husband is involved with crime boss “Antonia” and anything goes, including women, drugs and guns. He has even taking to pimping his wife to him, however this has backfired giving her a better position in the business than him and allowing her to get out if only the Feds would get their act together and do what they should be. Seven year later she is now Laurie and settled with her own business a state of the art indestructible home and her two dogs. With a select few friends and excellent skills in combat including weapons she is determined to enjoy life without the company of a man, well apart from obvious needs. Then along comes Agent Aiden Killmore, his partner and him need her help and with his good looks and sweet talking he is hoping for more than getting her involved in their case, like getting involved in her life. The sexual tension between these two is evident from the first meeting and the banter as Laurie is determined to not let him in gets hotter the more the two work together. There are some tender moments between the two as Laurie lets some of her back story free and confides in Aidan and this just make a relationship more believable. She is a feisty no-nonsense lead and I love the fact that she can kiss ass without any help and gives the sass to go with this. Having a weapon in every room of her house make you aware of how nervous she feels about letting anyone in so you totally feel for her while she is developing her feeling for Aidan. With a twist in the tale this is the first in story with book 2 set to continue the story.
Strong female character .. … um absolutely yes and double triple yes – girl is a maniac. Suspense and drama … its there Male who is amazing … uh huh … Dirtbag husband … for sure
So pretty much this has all the makings of a book I love. This is a really great read. The cover is fantastic. I knew the minute I saw it that I was going to get a story that was one to let you all know to click up. Page one doesn’t disappoint. Goner .. boom and holy moly.
Aiden is a great fit into the plot. Posing as a father and son duo its Paul and Aiden’s job to get close to Laurie for specific reasons. I guess I can tell you that “Leia” is working undercover with the FBI to bring down a sex trafficking ring which her dirt bag husband is involved in. And .. wait .. yup hes a cop. NOT GOOD .. NOPE!
Placed in protective custody Leia becomes is now Laurie and her life is replaced with an entire slew of not taking any crap from anyone. Protecting her family is the first and only thing she cares about.
Gah this is so hard to not tell you about the incidents that are hanging on the pages and not give anything away. There are some excellent secondary characters that I am hoping we find down the road in their own stories. Watch who you trust in this one because everything is not as it seems. There is a cliffhanger for sure leaving you reeling for book 2!
Thank you for the ARC! I cant wait to get my hands on the next release. Review to post to Ramblings From Beneath The Sheets.
HOLY GEEZ!!! This book rocks! Killmore by Martha Sweeney is simply amazing. In this book Laurie is in witness protection after dealing with a horrific past, she has come so far in making a new life for herself. She has friends even though they know nothing about her past, she has contingency plans in place and is ready at a moments notice; the one thing that she did not plan on was Aiden. Aiden is a federal agent that is looking for her assistance, but she does not trust him at all. After months of baby steps and a lot of groveling, Aiden gets Laurie to agree. They come up with a backstory and start to move forward. When her new neighbor takes an interest in both Laurie and Aiden, they both know that something is not right. They soon realize that the mystery neighbor is actually tied to her past, so she starts putting her plans in play. How can she possibly handle going through all of this again? Wow, so if you like books that have intense story lines, amazing characters and plot twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat, this is the perfect book for you. Gah, I absolutely loved it and would give it way more than 5 stars if I could. I cannot wait for the next book to see how it all plays out. My heart broke for Laurie and how much she has had to deal with and bless Aiden for sticking with her and not giving up. I could seriously talk about this book forever but I do not want to give anything away. Well done to Martha Sweeney!
Well, Laurie is as equally annoying as she is a bad ass! It took time for her to grow on me because I wanted to throat punch her constantly!!! She completely frustrated me. I wondered if she'd have any redeeming qualities and thankfully she did! Aiden, oh, Aiden, how I love you!! I wasn't sure if he was trustworthy in the beginning, but my oh my did I fall in love!!! There's so much angst and the love hate banter between the two wilI drive you crazy! I honestly loved all the characters! The plot is crazy and there's always something going on making it hard to get bored. I still don't have any answers and it's driving me crazy!!! This book is thrilling, mysterious, angsty, fun, sexy, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm freaking out at the moment that I have to wait for the second book!
WOW what can I say, I loved this book! It had a lot of key aspects to an exciting Romance story. Thriller, suspense, and... ♥ well I can't spoil it. It also flowed well. The characters had great chemistry pulling me in right from the start. I felt anger, hope, excitement, fear & love. I was hooked all the way through. I couldn't put it down. I needed more.
When it ended, I wanted to start the next book right away. Hurry up, please. I want the next book!
I would love to see this one in a movie. It definitely has the potential needed for that. I pictured the scenes playing out in my head as I read it.
Killmore by Martha Sweeney is a fast paced and intriguing book. It will sink it’s claws into you on page one and will leave you on the edge of your seat waiting for book 2. This author is a new author to me and I was blown away by how well she creates such an interesting and intense story. The writing helps paint a clear picture of what is happening and be characters, it is easy to imagine everything that is happening. The more I read of this book the more I wanted to read, the more I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen. This is a brilliant book and one I thoroughly enjoyed. I cannot wait to dive into book two.
Killmore is the first book in the Killmore Series by Martha Sweeney. It is intense and suspenseful, with an erotic romance threaded through the story. This book had me biting my nails and on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Laurie Breitsprecher (Leia) has been placed in witness protection by the FBI. She was their ‘inside-man’ and informant on a notorious crime lord and his drug and human trafficking ring. Because of her past situation and the trauma she experienced the ghosts of her past haunt her dreams and invade her mind. She is constantly looking over her shoulder waiting for the day her past finds her. So she keeps a very low profile and doesn’t make friends. There is no room in her life for a romantic relationship; because she doesn’t want to place anyone in danger, plus- she really doesn’t trust anyone- especially men. When the FBI show up in her life again, asking for help in an investigation- Laurie is not happy. She has already lost so much. Paul and Aiden are agents with the FBI and have been tasked with a complex and dangerous assignment. Laurie is a valuable asset and her help would be invaluable to the investigation. Aiden is extremely attracted to the tough, sassy asset and hopes that the time that they spend working together will allow him to break through all the barriers she has built up around herself. He knows it won’t be easy, but he thinks she will be worth the trouble. Laurie is highly suspicious of the agents and won’t drop her vigilance or invest her trust in them- even if Aiden is mouth wateringly sexy and seems to be honest and sincere. There is too much at stake. But her past does find her and brings new and unexpected dangers with it. How can she escape her past and put it to rest, once and for all? Will Aiden stand by her side and fight for what they hope to have, or will she be forced to start anew, alone- all over again? This story has so much action, mystery, drama and suspense- that I ended up in a page flipping frenzy in my attempts to find out what would happen next. There were so many twists that I just didn’t expect. The author did a wonderful job with the conception and development of the story line. It was definitely unputdownable! It is well written and flows smoothly for such a detailed and complex storyline. But, as the author has gone into quite detailed descriptions throughout most of the book, I felt that a few areas didn’t get her attention to detail that was evident elsewhere in the story. These areas really needed to have been more informative, but were skimmed over and had me wondering if I had missed something. So I ended up re-reading some sections, perplexed by the lack of detail. The characters are all so well developed; having their own quirks. I liked Laurie a lot, even though I was so frustrated with her at times and wanted to throttle her quite often through the book, for being so snarky. I understand that this was a defensive measure on her part, so people wouldn’t get too close and so she wouldn’t be able to get too attached. I liked that she was so self-reliant and resilient. She’s strong, tough- with varied and quite impressive skills. Aiden was a sweetheart, just dreamy. Honest, reliable, patient and so understanding. Let’s not forget his panty dropping sexiness. He is so perfect for Laurie, but she won’t let herself see that, until it may be too late. This book ends in a gripping cliff-hanger- that left me with my jaw on the ground. I NEED to know what happens- I’m on pins and needles. I can’t wait Ms. Sweeney; I need the next book NOW- pretty, pretty please! I definitely recommend this book; it is outstanding and completely riveting!
Killmore by Martha Sweeney is a mix of emotion, action, and romance all wrapped up into one.
Sweeney focuses on female lead Laurie Breitsprecher, and her tough take no prisoners attitude. Laurie holds her friends close, but has built a solid wall around her heart, and for good reasons. She is not one to trust lightly. However, when she cares, she cares with all that she is.
Killmore starts at full force and doesn't stop until the cliffhanger ending, that will leave you wanting more. It's one of those books, where you know you'll be immediately pre-ordering the next, because you have to know where this ride is going to take you.
Ok my head is all jumbled up with emotions at the min. I've just finished reading this book and I can honestly say I've have felt every emotion possible whilst reading Laurie and Aiden's story! I've laughed literally out loud at the banter and fab one liners, I've gasped with shock at the twists in storyline, I've frowned at Laurie stubbornness, melted at Aiden, well for just been Aiden and I've pouted n sulked when I finished it! Just to name a few. This book has everything and if you are into the romance genre but want more than boy meets girl, boy convinces girl to sleep with him has hot sex n they happily ever after then this is the book for you. Don't get me wrong this book has the sexual tension between the two main characters but it's not based solely around that. Killmore has more twists n turns I found myself getting a little dizzy! Martha Sweeney yet again has come up trumps showing how dedicated she is to being true to what she writes about. Without giving spoilers away the areas/topics Martha writes about shows depth, detail, understanding and passion that shines through. I am literally counting down the days until book 2 is released. Five stars doesn't seem enough.
5 star review My one word to describe Killmore by Marth Sweeney would be AMAZING!!! I honestly thought that this book was outstanding. I could not put it down. It was a page turner from the very beginning and although it does finish on a cliff-hanger it’s not one that has you pulling your hair out whilst rocking in the corner until the next one comes out but it will definitely leave you wanting more. I know I can’t wait for the next one. This book certainly had my heart racing and not for the normal reasons the books I enjoy does – it was full of action, suspense from the start and it was totally unpredictable so it leaves you guessing most of the way through. I thought the story had a very strong set of characters with whom I instantly warmed to. I really liked the lead female character Laurie. I thought she was great. Laurie is meant to be in witness protection after she helped the Feds when she reported on the dealings of Antonio Herrera, a Mexican crime lord but she’s not so sure. She keeps herself to herself and trains every day because she knows that he’s out there and that the devil will come calling for his debt to be paid. Everything is going great until she acquires some new next door neighbours who want her help. Even after everything Laurie has been through prior to her new life in witness protection she still remains strong and to some extent pretty resilient. She definitely shows that she doesn’t need a man to keep herself protected but then Aiden comes along! Not only was Laurie a fantastic character but so too were the secondary ones. I loved Laurie’s best friend Trudy – the things they talked about cracked me up! There were definitely some really funny moments in this book nicely nestled amongst the suspense. Now I can’t really talk about characters without mentioning Aiden! Oh he was so dreamy and hilarious! The things he did to try and get Laurie to go out with him or just to kiss him were really funny. I’m definitely eager to read the second book in the series and hopefully see a lot more of Laurie and Aiden. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be good!!! I’ve read quite a few good books recently and this is up there amongst them – it’s a definite must read!
Killmore is the first book in the Killmore series. This book tells the story of Leia aka Laurie and Aiden. Leia lived a life of verbal, sexual and physical abuse at the hands of her husband until the day that her police officer husband, Jack, forces her to help him in his secret life of crime. Once Leia is introduced to Jack's crime boss Antonio, Antonio is instantly drawn to her, so like the great husband that Jack is he basically pimps Leia out to Antonio so he can move up the crime ladder. While Leia’s life is in this horrible web of crime, murders, fear and human trafficking, she is contacted by federal agents to give them information about Antonio in exchange for witness protection. It takes a while for the feds to make good on their promises but eventually they do and Leia is dead while Laurie is born. Laurie pretty much lives the life of a recluse now in the small town that she was relocated to, only letting a very few people get close to her and never revealing her past, that is until the amazingly gorgeous federal agent Aiden walks into her place of business and turns her life upside. Once again Laurie finds herself being used by the feds and her life possibly in danger again but this time Aiden is determined that things will be different for Laurie, Aiden is determined that not only will Laurie be safe from harm but also a permanent fixture on his arm and in his bed. This book was beautifully written and very well told. The author did an amazing job keeping me on the edge of my seat waiting for more. This book had it all: love, hate, action, heartbreak, tears, laughs and hot sex scenes. The book doesn't really end with a major cliffhanger but ends with a ton of unanswered questions so I can't wait to read the next book in the series to have those questions answered. I highly recommend readers be over 18 due to language, sexual situations and abuse. I give this 4 stars.
Killmore by Martha Sweeney is a romantic suspense novel. It is NOT a cliffhanger but it IS the 1st in a 2 part series. Oh please tell me part 2 is coming out tomorrow!!!
Ok, so this is the story of Laurie and Aiden. As is typical with any romance, Laurie and Aiden meet, there is tension, there are sparks, and there is an underlying NEED for them both.
Then there’s the suspense part (which makes it a romantic suspense).
Laurie is in the witness protection program and has made a life for herself after being placed. She keeps her past very secret – it’s completely off limits to everyone. She has befriended an older couple and a widowed mom with 2 teenagers. THAT’S IT… these few people have become her family of choice. .
Aiden works for “The Feds”. He and his partner come to town as part of an undercover operation that they need Laurie’s cooperation for because of the location of her house. Are they telling the truth that it’s just about her house location or is there more?
Because I don’t want to give away anything about this story I’m going to say a few general things about the story. The characters are well developed and the story is told in a dual POV so you always know what each is thinking. There are enough twists and turns that had me turning pages and keeping my attention the entire time. A few times I thought I knew where the story was going and then it took a left and I had to refocus my brain.
The building relationship between Aiden and Laurie is full of snarky humor, innuendos and respect. The sex is subtle, and while it’s super H.O.T. it’s not described in explicit detail. The timing of the book was fast paced and kept the story moving along perfectly. Martha Sweeney’s writing is very descriptive without using an overabundance of words. I really wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It was THAT good.
Gah!! Another new to me author that has written a fantastic adventure filled story! The only way for me to give this story more than 5 stars would to have had more descriptive love scenes. But the emotions and feelings….yeah, this was a really good book.
I love Laurie and her sassy, bold attitude and mouth! I love Aiden and his patience and protective ways. I even loved the bad guys! (I loved that they got what they deserved…well most of them…)
There are so many ways this story could have gone, so many ways a new story could go! Absolutely love how Sweeney wrote this story. I actually thought it was going to end in a different way and I was thinking “oohhh man” but then she ended it the way she did and I’m thinking “OH MAN!!!” I really can not wait for the next adventure for Laurie and Aiden or anything else Martha Sweeney writes!
Laurie is in trouble from the beginning of the story but at least she knows how to get out of it. With a husband who is involved with human trafficking and drugs and being a mistress, not by choice, to the ring leader, life is about to change for Laurie. Sadly many people will need to die and hopefully Laurie won’t be one of them. When trouble comes knocking a second time Laurie is more than ready to protect herself and her friends, but what about her heart? “Like a sequoia seed, one sometimes must live through the fire and sprout from the ash,”
Aiden is a detective with the Feds. Can he be trusted? He is certainly yummy enough to look at. But Laurie doesn’t let him distract her...much. Aiden’s on assignment to find a wanted criminal but finds Laurie instead. Are these two working together? What is Laurie keeping from Aiden? So many questions that luckily get answered…mostly.
I was generously given an arc in exchange for an honest review.
5++++++++ Stars LAURIE is my Spirit Animal!!! Lol!!!!
Holy shit! What a ride!!!
I finished this earlier today and I am still thinking of Aiden and Laurie (Leia). I love when you start reading on the first page and instantly get sucked into the story. I got comfy with these characters from the very start. For me, character developement has to be on point. Martha is absolutey beautiful at capturing emotions and relationships.
The story is not at all rushed and flowed easily. Aiden genuinely stole my heart. His persistence never faultered no matter how stubborn or mean Laurie got. (She had good reason I thought)
I never give anything away in reviews. This book had me reeling all the way through. Enough suspense to keep me wondering and enough romance to make me swoon.
I love love love the fact that she used Laurie (paperbackpixie) as her muse. She is an absolute doll and I pictured her bad-assery all the way through. Absolutely genious!!!
I hate that we have to wait for the next book because I wouldve dove right in after the last page of book #1.
Yall need to oneclick this baby when its released. One of the best books Ive read in awhile.
Thank you Martha!!!! Cant wait for Book 2 !!!!!! Excited is an understatement!!!!!!
I can’t dive into this book until we talk about the outside of it… look at that damn cover!! How beautiful is that woman? I mean, she looks LETHAL!! And fierce!! And sexy!!! This has got to be one of the best book covers I have seen in a while plus it’s black and white... classy! The real Laurie is exactly the book Laurie!!! If you don’t know what I’m talking about check out Martha Sweeney’s post on Goodreads!
I seriously love Leia (Laurie). I love that she was able to take her power back from an abusive husband. There isn't much more an abusive, controlling man hates than having to share his wife with someone who removes all your power. I mean, wow, Jack… what a pansy!
OMG, Laura and Aiden are adorable! I can't help but laugh at the scene after they changed a light bulb… “I'll give you a kiss if you let me go.” Plus all that your fingers are crossed and time limit stuff and Paul's comic relief! I really didn't expect the humor in this book but man... it is funny! Besides being funny, this book is super suspenseful. It was a book that I wasn’t able to put down, I dried my hair while reading on my phone. It is unputtdownably awesome!!!
For as much as this book is funny, sweet, and adorable… it’s twice as fierce! Laurie is one kickass woman! Just like everyone else in this book, I didn’t know who to trust. My mind was everywhere and everyone, except the two leads, were guilty. I was very excited to see that this is a part 1 because I NEED more of Laurie and Aiden… I need more of the secondary characters like Trudy and even Codie.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a unpredictable journey this was! I loved the build up of the story & all of the plot twists had me turning page after page. This being story of a strong minded woman who ends up in an unsavoury relationship but decides to take back control by working with the FBI risking her life to escape her current circumstances. But with this comes sacrifice, she gives up her home, her family entering witness protection to protect herself & those she loves.
Although succeeding in making a life for herself somewhere new she remains guarded, her walls firmly in place. But what happens when her past comes back to haunt her? What happens when someone starts to knock down those walls piece by piece? Someone your brain is trained not to trust?
I admired Laurie's strength throughout this whole book. Her determination to be stronger, to make sure she has control over all aspects of her life, after losing it at a great cost in her past. She cares for those she loves, always putting them first despite her tough exterior & I loved that about her.
But was she truly living this new life though? Was she truly happy? Before her new life becomes disrupted by a fed determined to knock down the fortress she had built around her heart? I'm not so sure, she always seemed to be missing a part of herself.
While respecting all of the reasons she had not to trust the gorgeous, challenging, cocky fed. A long with risking her past coming back to bite her on the ass. Without giving away too much it was totally worth the risk & I cant wait to find out what happens next!!!
*** WARNING SPOILERS*** Killmore by Martha Sweeney gets 5 stars because I cannot give it more stars than that! Killmore is the first book in The Killmores series, I seriously cannot wait to read the second one! Leia Badeau gets a chance to start over as Laurie Breitsprecher in a new town with a new life. After helping the Feds by giving intel on a case that she was involved with Leia goes into witness protection, which is fine with her. After escaping her past and starting over she starts to build small bridges with of of the townsfolk. However, she still has her secrets and is constantly in contact with her Handler Becky. New Feds come into town telling Laurie she needs to help them with a case, but the deeper they go “undercover” the more Laurie feels like her past is coming back to get her. Working with Aiden has its perks and even though their ”relationship” is for their cover the feelings are not fake. When the times comes and the mission is over can the two go back to their lives from before? Martha had me hanging on every word and rushing to finish the book because I could not get enough of these two! The beginning of the book threw me off for a bit and I did have to re read the first two chapters to understand what was going on. I love that Leia/Laurie is a survivor and does not stop surviving even though her new life is relatively safe. If you love strong independent female characters go read Killmore to find out more about Leia/Laurie! Stay tuned for Killmore #2 coming out in 2017!
THIS BOOK is the queen of badass! There is no other word. SEXY, THRILLING, NAIL BITING Badassery! I was hooked from the first couple pages but the ride was off the chain!
The characters are well developed, original, multidimensional, humorous, snarky, dangerous... The chemistry between The two leads is outstanding and my God the secondary characters!!!
This is a big issue for me. If I don't feel like secondary characters are interesting enough to have their own book, I'm not interested in the one I'm reading. To me a book is officially real enough to dive into if the background characters are as thrilling as the leads and this definitely happened in Killmore!
I can't find a single flaw in the plot and please be warned there are enough twists to keep the pages turning! It's 2AM and I'm so pumped I'm actually staying up to write a review!
Sweeney books NEVER disappoint so I knew when I signed up to read this that I was getting into something but this still blew me out of the water!
Killmore is all the makings of a movie and I expect to see it as such one day. Do NOT miss the chance to say, "I read the book before it hit the big screens"
Absolutely fantastic read! This Author needs to be doing nothing other than working on part two. I need it in my hands like now.
Killmore by Martha Sweeney. I give this book 5/5 stars. Sweeney has really outdone herself with this fabulous book. The theme of this book is a cop/Witness protection love story. This is the first in a series. Leia/Laurie is in the witness protection program. She did some stuff in her past that was done to keep her safe. Her past catches up to her and tries to ruin her future. The first quote I chose for her shows that she is tough: “He was probably scared to get his butt beat if he tried too much.” the second quote shows her feelings for the nickname: “It’s growing on me,” Aiden is a federal agent. He is in town for a job but once he sees her it's done. His love is ripped away when her past shows up. The first quote I chose for him shows his feelings for her: “That dress and your tat are perfect and beautiful, since when do you care what other people think.” the second quote shows that he loves her: “There’s no way I’m ever going to let this woman go, not for as long as I’m alive.” This is the first book I've read by Sweeney. I really loved everything about the book. I felt so much sadness and happiness throughout the book. I was instantly in the book from the beginning. I highly recommend this if you like cop love stories. Check out this amazing author, series and any books she has.
The Reaper Gets His Dues This is the first book book in a two book series. This is also the first book I've ever read by Martha Sweeney and I have to be honest, I floved it! I can't wait for the second book and I can't wait to read more from her! I think I stopped breathing and my heart stopped beating at times! Absolutely fabulously epic! If you want to feel the same, read this fast paced, action packed, edge of your seat thriller! Laurie escaped death, but fears the Reaper will come to collect what is due to him. In all fairness, that is true, eventually, we all do die, and he does collect. However, Laurie's case is not like everyone's, the Reaper was denied her. After starting over in a new town, but still living in fear, she's a stronger woman who can take care of herself. She despises men especially, and she's trying not to get too attached to anyone or anything, due to her past. When she meets Aiden, they are both physically attracted to each other, but neither want a relationship, and he's a hot as sin, an ex-marine. Of course, her past was bound to catch up to her. Who can she trust, besides herself? How does she protect the few people she's let into her life? Will the Reaper get his dues from her, the people she cares about, and/or both?
