Talk of war has reached Lakewood and Derrick is busy day and night crafting weapons and armor for his father, which keeps him from thinking of Jeslyn and how she left. When Lucy shows up at his shop, smirking, and talking about Jeslyn's mysterious disappearance, he's ready to slice off her head; instead, he decides to see if her claims about Jeslyn and Lucino vanishing together are true.
As Derrick and Lucy embark on a hunt to find Jeslyn and Lucino, their hatred will turn into mutual acceptance as the trail will lead them into Nomad's land and straight into war.
DEADLY DANCE is a novelette that takes place between Book 2 & Book 3 of The Daath Chronicles.

I still haven't decided on what my general opinion is on these in-between books that seem to be everywhere lately. Of course, if it's a favourite series, it's always great to be able to read more about it. But I'm always afraid the stories don't really add something to the story.
This short story set of Broken Forest and Wicked Path focuses on two characters we've not really seen in the second book. I really had to think who Derrick was again, I'd all but forgotten about him.
Fans of the series will certainly like it, and for me it's hard to judge right now how much of it will be useful in the third full length novel which will be published shortly, but for now, while an entertaining and fast read, I didn't think it added much to the story or was really long enough to get to know either Lucy or Derrick.
Thanks to the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review during this blog tour.
Deadly Dance by Eliza Tilton is a tasty treat in her Daath Chronicles series. Written from the perspective of Derrick, the boy scorned by Jeslyn, the girl he rushed into danger to save as he tracks her after she goes missing. Derrick is accompanied by Lucy, sister to Lucino and a Reptilian shapeshifter responsible for Jeslyn’s repeated disappearances. She lightning fast and deadly, but this time she wants to help Derrick. To further her own goals of finding Lucino of course. They reluctantly agree to work together amidst the mistrust Derrick feels for someone intent upon destroying his people – she is gorgeous after all! Between their sparring, they will have to cooperate and support each other with their unique skills to survive capture by the Nomad King and unlock the next piece of the puzzle. Well written, a great addition to the Daath series with a fun twist of an alternative POV. 4 stars - recommended reading along with the other books. And the new cover designs are stunning.
I read this one before the first two in the series. I know I shouldn't have, but the cover is gorgeous, and I was dying to dive into the pages.
I did read the blurbs on the first two books to get a general gist of the plot, and that was enough to get this story going. The characters are so well written that I had no trouble relating to them from the first pages on. The tension is tight between Lucy and Derrick. Really tight. And it's exactly this which makes their exchanges and short adventure a delight.
There's action, danger, and wonderful glimpses into the strange world. Even though this is a short story (I finished it in less than an hour), I was caught up and a little disappointed that it ended so soon.
I can't wait to see what book 3 will bring. Well, after I go back and read the first two. And I'll definitely do that.
It is interesting to have two characters that hate each other and want to kill one another, but also have a certain magnetic attraction. This formula is what kept me reading Eliza’s novella. You have magic, monsters and romance, what more do you want? I did not read the prequels though, so maybe I would not have liked these characters as much if I had read more about their dirty deeds.
I enjoyed this novella. It takes place between books 2 & 3 in this series and follows Derrick. I really liked Derrick in book 1 and missed him in the second one so it was good to catch up. I was heartbroken for him because Jeslyn wouldn't marry him and he obviously still loves her. So muc so that he agrees to go with Lucy (uber bad chick) to go in search of Jeslyn and Lucino.
I enjoyed the changing of emotions between the two of them. Lucy has always seemed like there was more to her but she is so wickedly powerful. Derrick is smart and strong. I loved how he was immune, that was so smart.
I loved having this "extra" primarily featuring Derrick who forms an unlikely ally in his search for Jeslyn. After Derrick's earlier encounters with the alien species, he takes precautions to prevent future enchantments. This book is packed with adventure, and quite possibly a little bit of charm. Excited to read book 3.
Since I received the novella, Deadly Dance, in exchange for a review, I will be focusing this review on that book rather than the whole series. I will, obviously, touch briefly on the first two books as well.
Moving along: the first book started off a little slow – I actually considered putting it down because it was going so slowly and I was also busy with some other books. However, I’m glad I actually finished all three books to the point that I’m looking forward to the final book in the series. Personally, I found the second book, Wicked Path, much better than the first book and the novella mainly because the characters have developed by then and the plot becomes a little clearer.
There are many main characters in this series with multiple POVs specifically: Avikar, Jeslyn, Lucino, and finally Derrick in the novella. To be perfectly honest, I did not find Avikar to be that great. He was supposed to be this brother, Jeslyn’s brother, who went out to find his kidnapped sister and save her from the clutches of an evil king, Lucino. However, to me he was a tad wimpy and confused. He was also immensely jealous during the second book with Raven’s childhood friend. There were just so many negative traits about him that I did not care for.
Jeslyn, the kidnapped girl, was also not what I had expected; however, she certainly did grow in the second book. She went from a young, immature female in the first book and once learning more about reality and life, she became more realistic and mature in the second book. I definitely found her more likable.
Lucino was a surprising twist. I went in expecting to dislike him and I did, in the first half of the book. However, towards the second half and definitely by the second book, I actually realized that I enjoyed his character. It was obvious how much he had changed from the cold, unfeeling prince to someone who actually learned how to have emotions and ultimately, feel love.
In the novella, it mostly focused on Derrick and Lucy but the book was written in Derrick’s POV. He was originally a secondary character in the first book with no mention in the second book so I was surprised to see him show up in the novella. Perhaps he will become more important in the third and final book. The same goes for Lucy. She was possibly a bit more important than Derrick in the series because she made a few appearances in the second book but, to be perfectly honest, she didn’t seem that important either.
To me, the novella seemed odd. It didn’t really follow the main plot and instead, followed two secondary characters on a path that seems out of the blue. From my experience, novellas either play a part in between the actual books or they go into detail about an incident that was described in the one of the main books. The latter seems pretty much out of the question for now since it occurs after the second book in the series so I’m banking on the first theory. Either Derrick and Lucy will become more important in the final novel or this novella was a waste for both time and effort. That being said, I do hope that Derrick and Lucy will end up together. That will be perfect for Lucy who made her opinions on humans quite clear.
Overall, I enjoyed the series. I’m actually looking forward to the final book mainly because I want to see the relationship between three couples develop (!!) and also because I just want to find out the end result. Also, I want to note that the Reptilian species was actually not what I had expected. I was definitely expecting some sort of lizard man with a tail and everything but in the second book and in the novella, Lucino and Lucy actually transforms into their other look and they actually sound quite pretty.

Having read the previous two books in this series, I was really excited to have the chance to read the novella set after book two.
I found it very hard to dislike Lucy in this book, even though I really didn’t like her in the other two books. While I would have liked to see more of some of the other characters, like Jeslyn and Lucino, I did enjoy seeing Derrick and Lucy interacting with each other.
It was good to see how Derrick had made himself immune to magic, but that it didn’t work with all types of magic. Seeing Lucy and Derrick working together was interesting, but I would have liked some more details about why Lucy wanted to travel with him, since finding Jeslyn and her brother didn’t seem to be her main motivation.
I would have liked to see more of Lucy’s abilities, though it was good to see her fighting and making use of her voice. It was nice to see her comfortable in herself and that she had no qualms about doing what she needed to. There were some moments when there were hints of more depth to her and I would have liked to learn more about how she had lived on her home world.
It was good to see some parts of the world in this book and a bit more about the society. I would have liked to see more interactions between Lucy and Derrick, though it was good to see how Derrick’s feelings towards her had changed a little bit by the end of the novella. I did like seeing how resourceful the two of them were and how well they worked together.
I do intend to read book three in this series when it comes out. I’d like to see much more of the world… and I’d now really like to see more of Derrick and Lucy. I didn’t get to see enough of them in this book and it would be good to see them interacting with each other some more, as well as how things go with the plot on a whole. At the moment, I’m not sure who I’m rooting for. But I think it would be interesting to see more of Derrick and Lucy working together… and more of both of their history.
This series must be read in order. The first book is Broken Forest. The second book is Wicked Path. This is the third book. I can't wait to read Crimson Tides!
Derrick is trying to get on with his life since Jeslyn turned down his marriage proposal. Being a Blacksmith keeps him plenty busy... Especially since there seems that there will soo be a war on. When Lucy approaches him about finding Jeslyn and her missing brother he wonders why he should care. Can he trust Lucy? Should he do the right thing and try and save Jeslyn yet again? Or should he just forget the whole thing and keep working like nothing is wrong? Could he live with himself if something happened to Jeslyn. Would Avikar ever forgive him?
Lucy is in a bind. Her brother Luciano is missing... As well as the pesky Jeslyn. She needs to find him before the other Reptiles find out something is wrong. Can she convince Derrick to help in the search? Will she find Luciano before it is too late? What could he possibly be up to now?
***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy a bit of SciFi and aliens in their fantasy action adventures with plenty of intrigue, mystery, suspense and romance :)
I received this book from Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review.
If anyone was wondering how Derrick was coping and where Lucy went after attacking Avikar and Raven while they were protected by the Order? Well, this novellette will give you a good idea.
Derrick keeps himself busy crafting armor and weapons after news of war has reached Lakewood. Trying to keep his thoughts from Jeslyn and her leaving to Luna Harbour. When Lucy shows up at his shop, looking for his help in finding Jeslyn and Lucino, who have vanished.
Honestly, I always knew Lucy was awesome but this confirms it! She’s ballsy and quick witted. She’s kind of the heroine we’re used to expecting in young adult novels. She clearly cares enough for her sibiling to ask for Derrick’s help. Maybe her concern isn’t as great for Jeslyn, but then again why bring Derrick?

I really, really enjoyed this novelette. I had never read this series before but after receiving the whole of it to do this review I must say that I did enjoy it.
It is fast paced, the characters have depth and are easily likable. I would definitely recommend people to check out Eliza Tilton.
Derrick is easily related too.. someone who is scorned by the past and a little sour over it.. and Lucy is... rather interesting and you can't help but enjoy the sensuous creature!
If you're a fan of the series or looking for a fast paced fantasy... check this series out!
