Ethan Tremaine may be a man in denial but his desire to dominate has never changed despite his fear of forming a relationship with his submissive. Instead he now trains them for others and is perfectly content to do so. He doesn't want to ever risk the pain he felt at his dead wife's desertion ever again. He's just released his current submissive to a fellow Dom when he realizes he has no one to assist in an agreed to demonstration at the Kinkfest coming up, which could be detrimental to their new club. Frantic he jumps at the chance when his partner, Davis offers to find him a new sub who loves shibari, never expecting that he's been set up.
As a collared sub, Sabella Johnston lived for her Master's approval. But now un-collared and back home with her recovering father, she is at a complete loss. It's been months since she's felt the familiar feel of rope around her body. When her best friend, Lauren begs her to help out with a bondage demonstration, she agrees as long as gets the chance to meet the Dom, and add her own stipulations. But once she meets Ethan Tremaine, sparks fly between them and she's having a hard time remembering her own conditions.
Hello, and welcome to my site. I'm Dakota, an author of erotic romance (think 50 Shades of Gray - but better) and paranormal erotica. And what exactly does that mean? Well, since I've always marched to the beat of different drum: it means that I get to take my unique life experiences - like putting around in the garage with my dad, or driving a train when I was ten, to create worlds where the heroines aren't necessarily June Clever, but are strong independent women who may stand on their own two feet, but long to submit to the right man. Whether it's two friends who realize there is more than friendship between them or the sexy alien who captures his unwilling slave's heart, sparks fly between them. My imagination has no bounds or at least none I've found yet!
When it comes to contemporary BDSM romances, Ms. Trace is one of the top five authors recommended. In this series, Doms of Napa Valley, it is another winning series providing a glimpse into this alternative lifestyle. Ethan Tremaine is a reluctant dominant. Reluctant in the ways of building a long term relationship with his submissive. With the way Ethan's been burned by an ex-wife, he's better off training submissives for other dominants than keeping one for himself.
Sabella Johnston is a strong independent female who craves an erotic power exchange. She's also chasing the elusive subspace statte. She's experimented with a couple of males and her last dominant was more domineering and abusive than dominanting and seductive. When Sabella moves back home to help care for her father, she's offered a chance to experience bondage with a rope master. For Rope bunnies, this is the book for you.
Ms. Trace is either a rope bondage fanatic or she is amazing with research. The BDSM in this story is truly remarkable in the details of Japanese rope bondage. She never lectures to a point of boredom; she provides bite size tidbits to tantalize those who may be interested in rope work and is just learning about it. This story is more than a Rope Bunny's wet dream. The BDSM also covers when some try to force their version of BDSM on others. Although to be fair, the villian in this story would not be classified by most BDSM lifestylers as a good dominant. By showing this contrast, a newbie into BDSM can see the differences between a healthy and unhealthy relationship as well as warning signs of an unbalanced dominant. These observations can also apply to the non-kinky relationships as well.
The give and take between Ethan and Sabelle is realistic. The way Sabelle behaves towards Ethan shows how submissives are not doormats. Some submissives may be but Sabelle is not and this is perfectly okay. The missteps between the two also demonstrations the human part to the lifestyle. No one is perfect. Dominants are not all knowing and all powerful. This is a good message for those who over romanticize dominants with unrealistic expectations. This lack of perfection does not detract from Ethan's allure. In fact, for me, it makes him more desirable.
From a plot perspective, this story moves at a good pace with the right amount of conflicts. The way all is resolved worked out well for me. This book easily captiviated my attention and I read it all in one seating. Then I wanted to read the next book in the series. The world building is great and makes those who are not close to a BDSM club wish this place really existed. It's a safe haven with responsible and non-judgmental dominant owners. What more could a lifestyler want?
This book is highly recommended to those who are past the Gateway to BDSM books and want something a bit more meaty. Ms. Trace is an excellent author of BDSM erotica and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
For all of their professed professional backgrounds and negotiation at the beginning, both MCs behaved very poorly. Ethan did not respect Sabella's relationship limits several times. Sabella acted like a brat to get Ethan's attention beyond her own relationship limits. Both idiots never discussed testing and birth control and always had bareback sex, even though Ethan didn't want a child at that time.
Weird, Sabella was experienced in the scene but had never gotten to subspace.
Lots of drama with misunderstandings. Lots of friends muddying up their relationship. The sex was boring.
This was my first time reading Dakota Trace and I found she has a way of pulling the reader into the story and keeping them on the edge of their seat.
This was a great insight into the BDSM lifestyle and the art of the different types of rope bondage. Ethan was not your typical alpha Dom nor was he perfect, but his flaws made him that more lovable. Both Ethan and Sabella brought the baggage from their former relationships into their relationship which hinder the progress of their relationship throughout the story. This provided lots of drama and angst.
In addition, the supporting characters were quite interesting and enjoyable.
I took me a while before realizing that this was not a good story for me (about at 50%, but I read it till the end). I thought I thought that the story would put forward the art of kinbaku, but we didn't see a lot of it, sadly. Also, I'm not fond of story where we have the point of view of the bad guy, but this is very personal. Sabella was not well characterized. The gap between her submissiveness and her mouthy ways, and her tendency to fly when things are going difficult... So. Not a story for me.
Ethan and Sabella. Hero is Japanese/African-American (with dreads!) He's the Temporary Master because he doesn't want any long-term subs, hands them off to other masters after training. Bella left a bad master to return home and nurse her father back to health.
I enjoyed the book. Could have had more detail of the rope scenes. I also wanted a bit more of the intrigue.. Intrigued enough to get the next book... Pam James.
This is such an engaging read! Both the characters and the storyline are brilliant interesting and believable as well as the rope scenes being incredibly sensual! A riveting read! Highly recommended!
I loved this story. Ethan and Sabella are absolutely sweet for each other. Their journey is very interesting. The flow of this book is done well. I absolutely recommend this book.
