The last 25% was like WOW I cursed, cried, and was really angry This is gonna stay with me for a while After a horrible and disfiguring fire, Kiera Mason is ready to re-enter society. She has only her Mother's sister left. So she plans to stay with them as a way of healing. She has a plan and gives herself sufficient time frames to work towards. The goals are reasonable as is her course of treatment. She refers to her burns from the fire that took her parent's life as "patchwork" skin. She has obvious self esteem issues. When Keira goes to her Aunt and Uncles house she is confronted with starting over with everything from a new name to a family she never really knew.
The truth of her ordeal comes out in small parts, each one more shocking that the other. It makes this a page turner. When the naughty comes in so does Jake...jacob omalley (3)
The author creates a group of people that you honestly hate. Cousin Whitney is the queen and refuses to bow to anyone. She is bold, opinionated, bossy and abusive to people. She seems to get away with things because of her Anson name. Her dad, Bud is a real estate and construction genius who makes people money. So that is the way he gets everything done. They are EVIL!
The entire story surrounds this family, the Anson's and one Jacob O'Malley, bar owner bad boy.
This is loaded with hate, anger, family and lots of scandal with a side on erotic romance. So YES its got everything I love. This author continues to surprise me with her stories. This was another captivating read. The last 25% was like WOW I cursed, cried, and was really angry This is gonna stay with me for a while
People have three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and close friends, and your true face that you only show yourself.
Holy crap, where did this come from? I remember seeing a promo post on FB and I also did one so the blurb of this book caught my attention. I was ready for something different, a change. This was it! Frikkin fantastic. I pleaded to the author not to break my heart .. I even cursed the author but later apologized lol.
This book starts out grabbing the reader. What happened, why, who is she, who is Kitty.... Why did they always fight. What is she hiding ...
You get right into the story from the beginning and it doesn't let you go. There is a slow section in the middle but it still keeps you entertained and involved.
The characters are amazing and I connected with all of them. Viv is stronger than she thinks and the way she battles with her insecurities and confidence is brilliant. I really love the way she stands up to Whitney. Whitney is such a superficial, crazy bitch that she is over the top and out of control but her character is a breath of fresh air for a change.
"Never be defined by what you have, but by how you made someone feel. Thats what people will remember."
Linc is a strange character to me. Hot, sexy but needy and somewhat nerdy. Hattie and Patten melted my heart more than once. As I said these characters are super strong and the author has an incredible way of making u connect to them all. Kitty is sweet and caring and tries so hard to make up for Viv's losses but something is off, and I don't just mean her Xanax and booze lol I adore her uncle and his affection towards her but I find him weak and a little spineless Jake ... Awww I love Jake. He is smokin hot, sexy, manly, stubborn, troubled but not totally broken. Strong, independent and secure. Did I mention smokin hot?
The drama is thick right from the start. I did manage to guess one secret pretty fast but there was no way I was expecting the outcome at all!
"Each person has three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and friends and the one that you only show yourself. That face is your true self."
I loved this book. I was captivated, connected and intuited. I loved the drama and the play out and it was so nice to read a romance that was not like all the rest.
I would definitely tell you to take a chance on this one. You wont be disappointed!
There is one thing .... I do want to say is that I pre ordered my copy and the first copies had spelling errors. They made me double read a few times but never did they take away from the story! Thats how strong this book was. The reason I added this is because anyone that knows me knows I don't like errors that take me out of the zone. I don't blame the book or the author for the errors, they should have been picked up by the editor or proof reader. So if you had this same copy then you will be glad to know they were fixed.
The tag line: "People have three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and close friends, and your true face that you only show yourself." is shown to be so true in this amazing story!
The characters are brought to life by the expertly penned text but even so, there are surprises when you least expect them. Their attitudes, behaviour and motivations are hidden, there are secrets waiting to be uncovered or revealed and few people are how they appear. There's backbiting, love hiding real hatred, jealousy and pure evil alongside true love and romance. Talk about a roller coaster ride - this story has so many twists and turns its like trying to navigate a mountain road wearing a blindfold! This is no cosy chicklit, it is a riveting story of a dysfunctional family where you're not quite sure who is endangering the lives of unsuspecting victims, one where rocking the boat and revealing their so cosy existence is an act could lead to life threatening reactions. A real page turner full of suspense and fear that isn't resolved until very close to the end of the novel.
This is a superbly crafted romantic suspense that I have no hesitation in highly recommending to lovers of this genre.
Thank you to the organisers of this promotional tour for gifting me an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
After August was such a great story. I wasn't sure what to expect at the very beginning, but then WHAM, there it was. A gripping story about battling the scars and wounds of a horrid past, the desire to move forward, and the hindering of those determined to see failure come through. Angela March takes us on this great trip to see Kiera Anson overcome the gruesome scars left behind by a violent and volatile relationship, and lead her to a life where someone can see past the skin deep imperfections, one leading her to a bar in Charleston and a very sexy Jake O'Malley. Awesome story, and perfect outcome!!!
Wow not sure how to put into words with what I just read. For seven years Kiera Mason has been hiding behind high walls and is ready to re-enter society. With a new name "Vivien Rose Anson" and family that she hardly knows even though her Aunt Kitty is her mothers sister, but they didn't get along and when they spoke they just argued.
But it seems that Vivien has caught the eye of the men around her first Lincoln her cousins friend and her running buddy but she turns him down for a date, Jacob "Jake" O'Malley tattooed biker and owner of O'Malley's bar and Alex West hot tattooed architect who is working for the Anson family.
But someone is put out of place when they realise they are no longer getting the attention Whitney Anson is a spoilt little brat who you just wanna slap her whole attitude is well, she thinks everyone should be beneath her including Jake, Alex and Linc, but when Jake and Alex both shut her down and pursue Vivien she does everything to get her out of the family.
Vivien has given herself until August and give Charleston a chance but with only one man on her mind and Whitney spinning her lies about Jake, but after one fight between Whitney and Vivien, she leaves and she ends up in Jacob's arms, but seems like her family have reported her missing and now she finds herself being put back in a place she never wanted to be again, and with the help of Chad and the butler Jacob finds out where Vivien is and he finds a few other things out in the process, but seems like the Anson family have been keeping a pretty big secret of their own and it affects Vivien.
Great read love, lies and deceit what more do you need from a book.
Lies, secrets and superficial exteriors.
People have three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and close friends, and your true face that you only show yourself
I loved this book so much, I am glad that I started to read it. It was so exaiting and very good book. The story was so thrilling and it just took me in side with the Kiera life, I wanted to know ending so bad that I couldn,t stop reading before I get what I wanted to know. Kiera was so good main character that I enjoyd her story and cried sometimes when she's ife was so tragic and hard. The love story was so overhelming that I cried happy tears and this book made me so sad sometimes and happy in one time. I really have to say that I don,t understand her aunt actions against her. It was so rude and sad what she had to been through. I get to know that people have three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and close friends, and your true face that you only show yourself. There was also so much lies, secrets and superficial exteriors. I loved book so much that I want to discover more this author books. Thank you author! :)
I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review by author Angela March.
Kiera Mason arrived at the mental hospital 7 years ago after surviving a horrific accident that claimed her parents lives and left her scarred but she left the hospital as Vivian Anson. Now with the help of her aunt she is starting over in a new life. She meets several men but only 1 seems to capture her heart but things go against the couple when she is committed by her aunt on false charges. Can she find her way out of this and back into the arms of the man she loves or will they finally break her into a million pieces.
The flow of the story was amazing and the character interactions was so riveting through out the whole book. I had a hard time putting it down because it was so good.
Wow I was so pleased to get the chance to read this book it was my very first book by this author and it definitely will not be my last. This story will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions that will leave you breathless. You will want to cry, Laugh, Get Angry and then just do it all over again. This story is about Kiera a young woman that has been dealt a terrible hand in life and has lost the things that she loves most. Then she meets Jacob and you get to sit back and watch the story unfold. This book was amazing and will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen next and you never see the twist and turns coming. Amazing Story.
Kiera Mason carries around the scars of her past. She has been locked away for seven years now it is time to start living again. New home, new name, new life with family she barley knows.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Before reading After August I had never read a book written by Angela March. I'm so glad this book fixed that little problem for me.
Kiera has lost everything in her life that mattered to her. She has spent seven years in the place she feels the safest. The time though has come to get back to living her life and overcoming the great obstacles in front of her. She's moving in with her Aunt Kitty and Uncle Ben and their two children Chad and Whitney in Charleston, South Carolina. Hoping to get back to her art, and life in general Kira seems to have high hopes but at the same time still has work on herself to do.
Entering a new city she meets Lincoln a family friend and her running partner. Alex West, a hot shot architect working for her Uncle Ben. Last but not least is Jake, local bar owner whose hot tattooed and rides a Harley. Can Kiera aka Vivian start a new life with her extended family and find her way in her life to a fulfilling and happy future?
This book is absolutely amazing!! It is full of twist and turns you never in a million years will see coming. Kiera has to be one of the strongest female characters I've read about in a long time. I admired her so much because she could have just given up and stayed where she was instead of being brave and facing life again. Her Aunt Kitty has cared for her since she needed someone too and seems to have a fairly decent relationship with Kiera but is a little to controlling and likes things done the way she likes them. She also loves her pills and alcohol but has the worst mother daughter relationship with her own daughter Whitney I do believe I've ever read about. Whitney is horrible I wouldn't speak to anyone ever the way she speaks to her Mom and boy oh boy is she very jealous of Kiera. She's the ultimate love to hate character. Chad the son is carrying around a huge secret and is he a fashion snob. Then there's the guys that come into Kiera's life. Lincoln is the first she meets and becomes her running mate in the mornings. He is very interested in Kiera but Kiera is not to interested in him. Jake is the tattoo wearing bar owning hottie that she first sees with her cousin Whitney in very compromising positions. Last but not least is Alex West, hot shot architect that comes to Charleston to help Uncle Ben with the building of townhouses down near the beach. He's hot and he's cocky because he is very much wanted for his work talents. Kiera certainly has lots of choices and I love who she ended up with.
It's a journey of self discovery. Finding yourself again after you've lost everything. Picking up the pieces and moving on. It's thought provoking and at times my heart would break for Kiera. It's got twists and turns you never see coming and it just adds that much more to the book. Buckle up and grab this book and enjoy the ride.
HOLY WHAT DID I JUST READ BATMAN?! I wasn't sure what to expect at the beginning of After August, but it completely blew my mind!
Kiera Mason is entering society again, after living in the safety behind high walls for 7 years with terrible burns.. Her life was destroyed, and everything she knew was lost that fateful night. She's starting over with a new family, and even a new name. Her goals are to live with her mother's sister and family for a bit, until she can move on her own. However, the family she is staying with is an extreme exercise in patience, because cousin Chad is embarrassed by her, cousin Whitney is a mean snake in the grass, her aunt is a drama queen, and her uncle works too much. Add in the men chasing her, and she gets overwhelmed. Will Kiera be able to get through all the secrets to finally have freedom?!
"People have three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and close friends, and your true face that you only show yourself." This quote sums up After August perfectly. I NEVER expected to read what I just read in this book. The character development is spot on, and the author is fantastic with the layers that unravel slowly. Storyline is very well written, original, and flows smoothly while picking up speed. Angela March added in twists and turns like a boss, and as much as I like to be right, I never guessed that final secret! The last 25% was an extremely intense ride, and it ended with a huge bang! OMG CANNOT WAIT to read more from this talented and exciting author!
Kiera has been through the flames of hell, literally. After spending years locked in a psych ward, at her own behest, she is ready to put her past behind her and start anew. But in order to do that, she feels she has to change her name so that no one can find her. Reborn as Vivian, she moves in with her obscenely rich aunt and uncle to start her life again. Everything seems to be going okay, until her cousin Whitney returns from college. She thought she'd have a friend in her. Oh how wrong she was. Whitney is a spiteful, selfish, spoiled rotten bitch who throws tantrums like a toddler and will do anything to make her mother feel less than human. I loved hating Whitney. I wanted to slap the shit out of that girl, and Kitty and Bud, too, for allowing her to behave as such. Whitney doesn't like how much attention Kiera/Vivian gets, especially from the men that Whitney wants, hell even the ones she doesn't want. The girl is an absolute whore, whereas Kiera/Vivian is just your sweet, everyday girl next door hiding her scars. After being locked up for so long, Kiera/Vivian has issues judging people, reading their cues, and knowing exactly what she wants. You'll have that when you don't normal interaction with people. She finds a kinship with one of Whitney's "servicemen" aka booty calls named Jake, and begins to grow feelings toward him. But she's confused by his actions. Not only that, but she has Lincoln (her running buddy) and Alex (her uncle's business parnter) vying for her attention. Things are so crazy she just wants to leave and start her life abroad, but her aunt talks her out of it and making her feel indebted to her. Staying could possibly be one of the worst decisions she makes.
This book starts off slow and took me a minute to get into. About a third of the way through, though, it takes off and has you flipping the pages. The characters are strong and well built, but at times seem a bit wishy washy, and extremely immature. I was questioning whether I received a beta copy of this book, because it was riddled with errors and not formatted well, and had choppy sentences which took away from my reading enjoyment fixing it all in my head. The building of her and Jake's relationship was rushed, making it seem more like wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am at the end. I felt Kiara and Alex bonded more than her and Jake because of the way the author built their interactions up. There were times when the writing style even changed making it seem like someone else wrote parts. I was thrown by the added bits of Jake's POV in the middle of the story. They were tossed in at random times in italics and didn't flow well, interrupting Kiara's POV. Not that they weren't good. I liked them, just not placed well. There were a couple of times Bud and Kitty stop, making what seem to be secret business transactions, but nothing is ever spoken of those and the author never clears up exactly what they were all about. I thought everything from drugs to thinking maybe they were paying someone to follow Kiara because her crazy ass ex boyfriend was coming back into the picture. The ending though, wowzer. Was not expecting that. That was a huge twist to the story. What I don't get is exactly why. I know it stated control, but of what, her life? Was it money, because the story never states exactly how much her parents left her? And why would they want that, they are pretty much billionaires. There was just a lot of information left out for me and then it was just over. I liked the premise of this story, but it didn't meet my expectations. It has a lot of potential, but needs some TLC. *Book given in exchange for an honest review.*

After surviving a fire that claimed the lives of her parents, Kiera Mason retreats behind the walls of a mental hospital called Beckers. She remains there for seven years. Her Dr. now feels like she has all of the coping skills she will need in order to reenter society. The plan is to move in with her aunt's family in Charleston, South Carolina. Once there, she meets some new people-some are nice while others are not. For example, her cousin Whitney is the perfect definition of a snob, and she treats people terribly. Then their is her Aunt Kitty who drinks a lot and pops a lot of pills. She seems to care for Kiera but only when Kiera does exactly what she wants her to do. Oh and we can't leave Linc out. When Kiera first meets Linc she likes him. He seems nice. She soon learns that he is your typical rich kid who loves his preppy clothes. He, like Whitney, thinks that he is better than everyone. From the first time he sees Kiera, Linc is very attracted to her. The problem is that Kierra sees him as just a friend. Next up is Jacob O'Malley. He has a reputation as a man whore, drives a harley, and is covered in tatoos. Kiera is instantly attracted to him. While Jake has always jumped from one woman to the next, he wants more with Kiera. Finally, Kiera meets Alex West. He is a hot shot architect who has had his fair share of women. He also seems to have a way of always pissing Whitney off. Whitney is enraged that all of these men are interested in Kiera. Whitney is not about to lose her title as the princess of Charleston to anyone especialy Kiera. Whitney decides to create a lot of havoc thinking it will get Kiera to leave.
The only man Kiera is interested in is Jake. Just as they get together and begin to form a relationship, all heel break loose. Will Jake fight for Kiera, or will he revert to bad habits and find someone new?
I loved, loved this story! Kiera was a great character! She was s strong genuinely nice and compassionate person. Now Whitney? I wanted to smack some sense into her. My favorite thing about this book was the advice Kiera's mother gave to her when she was younger. Her mother said that People have three faces. One they show the world. One they show their family and friends. One they only show themselves. Isn't that the truth? If you are looking for a great read which also happens to have a great heroine, this is the book for you! Great job, Angela March!!
I am reviewing this book for Late Night Books and Reviews.
I was pulled into Kiera's story from the very first page, a horrendous burn victim who has hidden from the world for seven years. Her vulnerability and yet at the same time, her strengths, made me feel sadness and yet great admiration for this young woman who had suffered so badly and who's hurt was so deep.
Once the story moved along and Kiera left her safe haven to live with her aunt's family I felt that the story changed drastically The story slowed down rather severely at this point, making me lose interest a little, but I stuck at it and eventually the action picked up again and so held my interest once more. Her vindictive, spoiled brat of a cousin did not make life easy for Kiera. This girl had some major personality problems and I rather felt as if I was reading a teenage angst YA story. The entire family has some pretty dysfunctional aspects which isn't conducive to Kiera's recovery.
Mix in several males who are attracted to Kiera which engenders problems from the sexually dominant cousin as she also wants them, naturally, while resenting their attraction to her cousin.
The last few sections of the book brought some surprises and some powerfully distressing events but can love conquer all? Will Kiera find closure to her problems and live a normal life with the one man she loves? When the book was finished, I was left with the overall feeling that I had actually just read an amazing story. This being the second book that I have read of Ms March, I was very pleasantly surprised and would recommend this one, unreservedly.
There were some typo, grammatical and spelling errors in this one too so I have to assume that Ms March does not employ a proof reader / editor which is a shame because it really does detract from the story. Thus the subtraction of one star. Nevertheless, as I have said, a good story with some depth.
Wow this is some book! I honestly thought at first it would just be another tale of a broken girl who is physically scarred and her desperate struggle to feel whole again. And it was. But what I didn't expect was the strength Kiera possessed and how much she endured to get her HEA.
This is one heck of a ride. The author pulls out all the stops in this one. We have a young woman, spending the last 7 years in a facility to heal her mind. After suffering an absolutely horrific event in which she lost her parents, she is not only emotionally scarred but has what she likes to call 'patchwork' covering parts of her body. As if she hasn't suffered enough, what starts out as a welcome respite in the home of her aunt, uncle and her cousins after she deems herself fit to reenter the world, becomes a series of battles with not only her new family but the upper crust of Charleston. Thankfully Kiera, who is now going as Vivian as her new identity to leave the old memories behind, has a strong constitution and doesn't put up with anyone's crap. I absolutely loved that about her. Between her cousin Whitney, the seemingly harmless Linc and her less than stable Aunt Kitty, she is truly in a world like she has never experienced.
With the help of a sexy bartender in Jake and the unexpected friendship with the snarky Alex, we finally see Kiera finding her way back to herself. The author weaves a very understated mystery within this book and you are never truly sure what will happen next. Or how much Kiera will have to withstand. I'm telling you, it kept me on my toes and I was surprised more than once.
This is my first from this author and it won't be my last. I enjoyed the multiple POVs and the way she kept me guessing until the very end.
Vivian is the Heroin in this book..she was involved in a tragic accident from a former boyfriend and has been in a mental hospital for years trying to get strong to come back into society. She leaves her life behind, changes her name and moves many miles away to live with her aunt, uncle and her sassy, backstabbing ass cousin. So this book kinda reminds of of a modern day Cinderella story..it's....not the wicked step sister, but the wicked cousin..Whitney, she is the sappy sweet one second, complimenting one moment, then cuts u down in the next..such a witch lol. Whitney takes Vivi out, buying her clothes and forming her to her liking so she doesn't embarrass her in public in front of her snobby friends, she even takes her out to parties with her. This is where I about start getting whiplash over all the guys falling for Vivian lol which hot guy will she choose? Whitney's true colors of jealousy comes out over her cousin. Does Vivian's past come back to haunt her? Does Vivi get her happily ever after? I really enjoyed reading this crazy suspenseful, romance with a twist kind of book. and Lawd, the scene after Vivi did her painting, Had me panting for more..that was soo HAWT!!! Lol Every time I turned the page I wondered what craziness Vivian was about to embark in..sooo good!!
"People have three faces, one you show the world, one you show your family and close friends, and your true face that you only show yourself"
Boy is that true when it comes to the characters in this book. After August is a book filled with secrets, lies, and a twist nobody sees coming. I loved Kiera aka Vivian!! She was truly a fighter throughout the whole book. For what she went through, then placed in a psychiatric hospital for seven years, just to come out of there and thrown into a house with her dysfunctional aunt and cousin, Whitney, she showed strength most people wouldn't have.
This was the first book I have read by this author and I am very thankful to her for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review. It was a great read and hope more people get the chance to read this amazing story.
