** 2,5-3 "irrevocably HIS" STARS **
"She would run, there was no doubt about that, but what she would soon realize was he wanted her to. He reveled in the chase, and when he caught her he'd make her pay with her body until she was giving him every part of herself.
He was a sadist, and with each passing day of being his, she would realize that she was his perfect masochist."
Girl has a shitty life.
Girl leaves home, gets on a bus, goes to another city to start a new life with a little money in her pocket and a backpack.
Girl gets abducted by human trafficker a**holes.
Girl gets auctioned.
Girl gets bought by a man and is brought to his home.
Man has a lonely life.
Man wants one woman, a submissive, to want to stay with him for HIM, not his wealth.
Man goes to an auction to get himself one.
Man sees one, likes her, buys her, takes her home.
The rest is pretty much the same as any other book with a similiar plot, so no need to get details.
So why only 2.5 stars?

#2 // A not very scary Dom, who calls himself a "monster" all the time, but is no different than a little kitten.
#3 // A VEEEEEERY rapidly progressing Stockholm Syndrome storyline.

The only reason I wanted to read this is because it promised me a dark, gritty hardcore story..
Maybe I've read so much dark shit in my life that I'm immune to it now, but for me (and this is my opinion, it just fell flat) I would've liked more raw emotion to come through, more of a fight, first night she gave in to his sadistic demands, who does that when you have been kidnapped, sold, drugged, held captive and you are supposedly scared for your life?? Where was the dark gritty element to the story??

3 "Wish this was longer" stars.
I'm going to keep this review short because I don't have very much to tell. The moment Ruby was brought to her new home after having been purchased from an auction, I had a pretty good idea that this would lead into another inevitable case of stockholm syndrome—and boy was I right. I've read books with similar story line and plot twists as this one so I wasn't very surprised as to how this book turned out.
The hero, Gavin, was a little too tame for my liking, considering that he often referred to himself as a "sadist" and a "monster" which, in my opinion, didn't resemble his character at all. On the other hand, Ruby's character confused me at times. There was a certain scene where she attempted to escape the hero and her being aroused when she saw Gavin chasing her in the woods. Aroused? Really? In a situation like that? This just made me shake my head in disapproval. Both main characters were very underdeveloped. And an epilogue would have been great for that abrupt ending.
But despite all these, it was still a nice, decent read and I personally enjoyed Ms. Snow's writing, only that the story didn't have the level of "darkness" I needed for kidnap books. However, I would recommend this for those looking for a short story that has mildly dark subject matter with HEA.

I have to be totally honest. This was the best book I have read by Jenika to date. It was fresh, it was different, and I loved how she allowed us to get totally invested in the lead female before she thrust her into a horrible, dark, and nearly hopeless situation.
I have read quite a few of Jenika's books. I am pretty sure some people have read all of them to date, and I wish I could read that fast. But when the prospect of reading Jenika's first self-published book, I jumped at the chance. I was also on a dark romance kick. So it worked to feed the beast inside me.
Ruby was a very strong female lead, but she was also very broken by life. She was ready and willing to take the little money she had in her pocket and get away from her dead beat mother, and try to make a life for herself. As we watch the beginning of her journey we really grow to love Ruby. We want her to get out, we want her to start over, we want her to fight for a new life. That is just not in the cards for our girl when she is kidnapped by a human trafficking ring.
This is when we met Gavin.
We, well, I pretty much hate Gavin at first. Yet, I can't help but admire his brutal honesty even to himself. But I also kind of think he was lying to himself about Ruby when it came down to it. When you can't live without someone, you are in love with them, let's just be honest about that. But I'm jumping ahead.
As a whole the story gave me everything I wanted in a dark read without being disturbing and down right demented. I honestly believe some of these author write dark erotica/romance and think "Hmmm how can I make Hostel erotic." Jenika didn't do that. Technically, the situation is more than messed up. Just the fact that he bought her and was ok with that, is kind of disturbing. Yet, he also saved her. Even if she fought for a solid good life, that could take years. He gave her so much in a small amount of time, and he really didn't take from her, he drew her in with his wickedly seductive web.
He was the dark hero I look for in these sort of stories. He is bad, and he is actually still pretty much bad by the end. He is Alpha through and through, and I was glad the way Jenika ended the story and at the same time I was like "JUST SAY IT GAVIN!" lol But it was left very real, and very honest. I was sobbing by the end because my heart was already breaking a thousand times over for our sweet Ruby.
As a whole, this story was win for me and I highly recommend it to anyone that loves their dark romances.

This story was very interesting. I enjoyed Ruby's ability to open up to Gavin and develop feelings for him when she realized that their dark kinks were like two puzzle pieces that fulfilled one another. This is a very fast read and I would recommend this book to people who want to dabble in a darker romance. The only objection I had to the book is that it wasn't longer ;) Thank you Jenika Snow for writing a book that acts as my first stepping stone into the realm of dark romance.

TOO SHORT TO HAVE ANY REAL IMPACT

While I usually love this authors work I'm afraid this one fell short of the mark for me.
Ruby our heroine runs away from home, only to be kidnapped and put on the auction block to be sold to the highest bidder as a sex slave. Gavin a very rich and ruthless business man is the one who buys Ruby for his pleasure.
That is basically the whole plot in a nutshell. While I totally bought into Gavin's character. I didn't find that Ruby was written convincingly at all. The reader is supposed to believe that this 18 year old girl a virgin and recent high school graduate. Gives in to Gavin's demands within 24 hours without even putting up a fight. Gavin is a sadist, albeit not much of one IMO. Ruby we're supposed to believe is a masochist, this the reader is teased with at the beginning by being told about Ruby's erotic dreams where some faceless man is hurting her to bring her sexual release.
Right from the beginning this story felt rushed which made the whole tale feel very superficial and lacking in depth. Gavin's two creepy servants the brother and sister who owed Gavin their lives, just didn't fit in. Why they owed him everything I didn't quite get. There was some garbled reason that didn't make any sense. This story could have been so much more than it was. But at the end of the day I was hoping for something similar to "The Dark Duet" by C J Roberts. But all I got was a not very dark five minutes.

This was a good, smutty, short-story to pass a little time. It wasn't as dark as I'd anticipated, but an enjoyable, erotic, short-story. This story does include topics such as dubious consent, kidnapping, etc., although far milder than many stories I've read with these controversial topics. I guess I'd categorize it as "kinky-sweet" if I had to describe it.

Enter Gavin. A 34-year-old sadist with lots and lots of money. He's looking for a submissive that will willingly give herself to him. He decides to buy himself one since he's looking for something different.
The real story begins with Ruby after arriving to Fort Hampton and taking nap when she's kidnapped and taken to be sold.
When Gavin meets Ruby, he already knows she's the submissive he's been looking for.
Long story short, he takes her to his mansion, Ruby tries to escape, she gets punished and then fuc**d, and then some more. One day, Gavin realizes he forced Ruby to stay with him rather than her own will so he lets her go back to the States. Once Ruby sees how bad she used to live, she decides she'd rather be with Gavin than go back to where she used to live. The end.

“Scream, pretty girl. Scream as loud as you can.”
“You fight me, but your body craves this as much as I do.”

Spoiler Ahead This was a pretty good book that I liked. Ruby Jacobson has worked and saved her money so she can get away from her abusive mother and her many boyfriends. On the day she escaped she is followed by a man while sleeping she is kidnapped. Ruby finds herself being sold at an auction. Gavin Darris is a man that always get what he wants he is rich and sexy and dominant. Gavin doesn't have a problem getting women but he is looking for something or someone to feel is darker need's. When he sees Ruby he knows he has too have her she calls to him. This was a dark twisted book that I liked. Ruby who has had dark twisted urges and never thought she would act on them until Gavin. This book was well written or read as I listened to this books on audio. I love reading or listening to Ms. Snow's books and I loved the epilogue.

Gavin a very powerful, wealthy man has everything he wants except one thing! A woman that he can control at all times. When he sees Ruby at the auction he knows he most own her!
To me even though Ruby was abducted and sold against her will I find her and Gavin very complimentary of each other. He craves submission with defiance and she wants to submit yet fight while she does it! The story is very cleverly written and dark but in a good way!

Not what I expected
Oh the wishy washy back and forth... The h has some serious problems arguing with herself... I don't want to be a captive, but I like the pain, the pain is wrong, but it feels good, blah, blah, blah. I wanted a dark erotica where the H buys a slave and has dark tendencies (you know, what you think you're getting from the description). What I got was a H that wants to spoil her and a h that likes the pain and being held captive. The inner dialogue she has with herself is annoying and repetitive. Make a damn decision!

Short and sweet. Way too short for my needs. Coitus interruptus of sorts. Just long enough to get you bothered, not nearly long enough to make you happy.
Plot didn't get complicated nor resolved in natural way, but that's the case with all one night stands...

The warning on this book promises for a dark read. I believe it delivers.
Ruby hates the life she is living. She decided to set out on her own, make a new life for herself. All that changes when she finds herself being sold to the highest bidder.
Gavin is looking for someone he can make his submissive. When he sees Ruby for the first time he knows she has what he craves.

Sooooo ... Why was this on my self for so long???
This was beautifully written with an edge that dropped into complete darkness. At the bottom of this pit is a spark of life. A life where you feel so alive. Where only by accepting your darkness, your inner demons, will you truly be free.
I fell in love. Not so much with Ruby and Gavin's relationship but with their connection, and definitely with Gavin.
By the way the story starts, i can tell how Ruby's captivity will play out. There is little to no fight in her, besides the inner monologues. After her one and only failed attempt at escape, she caved. Which in reality, i knew would happen anyways. She was so turned on by her "demented" dreams and hated herself that she couldn't hide from Gavin. He fed her soul exactly what it needed, PAIN.
Gavin was perfect, right up until he went soft and decided that his slave needed a choice. He was intense on every level. When he gave it was pleasurable for all involved and when he took ... Mmmm what a thing it was. I guess it was his personality. So domineering and controlled.
OAN: The ending was oh so wrong! I did read the blurb so i knew i would be getting a HEA ending, but damn really?!?! Why would it end in a way that makes me want more? She makes her choice, NOW WHAT?!?! What happens next?
The ending all on its own kept this from being more!

As a fan of Jenika's work, I already knew that this was going to be a great read. With A Beautiful Prison it tells the story of Ruby and Gavin. I really got hooked with the story because of the build of the story. Showed different sides of Ruby and Gavin. Ruby being young and innocent, but wanting to be loved. Then there is Gavin strong willed, sadist, but deep down inside he wants to be happy and I believe that he saw that in Ruby. They had what the other needed. Even though that this is Jenika's first Dark Erotica book, it was sinfully sexy, but passionate at the same time. This book is so much worth than 5 stars.

I believe this is a successfully written story containing HOT erotica with BDSM elements {swoon}, and perfectly matched characters. The story develops quickly and emotionally.
It was an addictive, quick-read!!

🎧 Audio Review 🎧
I read the reviews before starting this book and went in expecting it to fall a little flat but thankfully, for me, it did not. I really enjoyed it because most of the captive books I have ever read don't really end up this way! I felt like Gavin was a good guy from day 1, no idea why maybe I just wanted him to be a good guy. The one thing that I didn't really get was Ruby, she was sweet and innocent with a crappy life but she knew she was a into pain...how did she know that?? If your looking for a dark erotica book, this isn't dark but I still really liked it!
I enjoyed the story, the sex was hot and the narration was good too!

Darker then I expected. The story could have been longer. It didn't feel like a happily-ever-after to me. I had issues with the girls age and felt it boardered on some very nasty stuff. If the heroine had been a little older and had experienced some more of life then graduating high school and living in her mothers trailer I would have felt better about it. The girl never got to be a kid and do the things girls like to do and she has only two choices him or the trailer? I like Jenika's writing but her age and lack of life experience was a big turn off.

Not as dark as some--I would recommend this to readers who like an Alpha male who isn't mean. This guy was serious about gaining and keeping control, but he wasn't sadistic about it. It is a kidnapping story, but I happen to like those. All in all it's a great shorter read that is written well by an author who knows how to write this genre well. Plus it is on sale right now. I'll be reading more of her work.

I think every part in this story felt so rush. I didn't quite feel the connection between the characters. And besides, this story is a standalone but I felt it were not like a standalone story, and that's all because of the ending, tsk! Ooh, and there is one thing that I felt so disappointing and that was irking me!

This is one I don't get tired of reading. My favourite trope lol - Hero is obsessed so he kidnapped the heroine

This was oddly and terrifyingly fantastic. I really liked it! I'm a bit surprised I liked it so much. Because of how dark it is... But it was short and just.... Nice.

STORY
This was my first book by Jennika Snow so I didn’t know what to expect. Immediately I was sucked into the tale of poor Ruby who runs away as soon as she graduates high school, fleeing the trailer park where she lived with her neglectful/abusive mother. On her very first day of freedom, she’s abducted and sold into sex slavery. Enter Gavin: rich and beautiful enough to have submissives yet eager for the ultimate, trainable masochist-one capable of learning to enjoy the pain he gives. Of course his sights land on Virgin Ruby (who dreams of pain/pleasure) and the rest is history....
“She was his little sexual doll, one he could groom, dress and do with as he pleased. Why didn’t that bother her as much as it should?”
Unfortunately, the story goes downhill once Ruby is abducted. It was hard for me to believe that a virgin would quickly discover that she’s an insatiable masochist, enjoying the abuse her captor doles out. It was even more hard to believe that she would develop such strong feelings for him in just a few short weeks. Typical Stockholm Syndrome story? I’m actually not 100% sure this is! However you want to label it, A BEAUTIFUL PRISON is a bit unrealistic it it was also sexy and entertaining most of the time.
PERFORMANCE
I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by Jason Hilton. Although his performance wasn’t terrible, he is definitely not the best narrator I’ve ever heard. In fact, his rather monotonous tone was often a good fit for the controlled, stoic, male main character. His attempts at speaking as the female was pretty bad though plus his dialogue and narrative didn’t flow as smoothly as more seasoned performers who have taken extensive acting lessons. I’ve heard worse though and would not avoid purchasing an audiobook narrated by him.

this was a story of slave auction romance..but it didn't bring anything new or spicy to the concept. it started off exciting and new and then plummeted when they arrived at the island.
