Nixie the bad, bad fairy isn't really that bad . . . at least, she doesn't think she is. But sometimes she has to be a teeny-tiny bit bad because that goody, goody fairy, Adorabella, is just too . . . well . . . just too GOOD. Fairy dust and magic are fine, but when your wand's as mischievous as you are, sometimes you have to rely on your own genius inventions to get you out of trouble!
Nixie is supposed to be helping with the preparations for the Blossom Ball, but it is such a lovely day and she would rather be playing than working… She is a lovable little fairy, always getting into mischief and trouble; not helped by her wand, which is a little wonky and apt to make spells go a little wrong. This is full of great characters, including the Fairy Godmother and Adorabella, who is simply too perfect to be true and delights in getting Nixie into trouble.
With eleven short chapters, and lots of black and white illustrations to break up the text, this is ideal for confident readers moving on to slightly longer chapter books. My eight year old daughter loved it and immediately asked me whether there were any more Nixie adventures to come. I hope there will be as this is a fun book, with lots of appeal for young readers.
Nixie is a mischievous fairy whose wand frequently goes wonky and causes chaos. Now, it's time for the Fairy Queen to come for the big Blossom Ball, and everything Nixie touches goes awry! As if things couldn't get worse, now her broken wand is MISSING. Will she be able to find it before the Fairy Queen arrives, or will she ruin the festivities?
The book is fun and silly, with black and white illustrations that depict the most ridiculous of the scenes. Sometimes Nixie crosses the line from being mischievous and a prankster to being a little mean-spirited, so I feel like that might be problematic and need to be discussed with parents and children so they understand Nixie's behavior is not acceptable.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
• Another magical book by Cas Lester! Beautifully written. Kids love this book and the story line is straightforward easy to understand for little children! In this book there is Nixie who is “the bad, bad fairy” and Adorabella “the goody-goody fairy” but are they friends? Keep reading to find out! Nixie is a fun loving character, who tends to get in a lot of trouble because of her fun loving nature! Gets her wand out, spells some magic spells 🪄 but oh dear! The wand has some different purposes… 😂 find out more in the book what happens next! There is a buzzby, Fairy Godmother and Fairy Queen along with other Fairy friends which makes this book very interesting to read!
My seven-year-old son loves these books. We live in the u.s. and unfortunately they are not easy to find in the US. He liked them so much that he made me cook the cake recipe in the back of the book. It turned out pretty well.
I read "Nixie the Bad, Bad Fairy" with my 4-year-old and 8-year-old daughters over two bedtimes. My daughters liked it because it was a little bit like the Rainbow Magic Fairy books they are so familiar with, what with cutesy names for things like the Bewitched Forest and the Enchanted Palace for example. But the book is different to those books. For starters it features a mischievous fairy as the main character.
Nixie is the Bad, Bad Fairy but the trouble she gets in is not always her fault. Her wand is a bit wonky so "it didn't always do what she wanted." Her nemesis is Adorabella the Goody-goody Fairy who will do anything to appear good, even malicious things to get a little revenge on Nixie, which is what happens in this book, although Adorabella gets her comeuppance of course.
The book is aimed at 5-7 year-olds and all the trouble Nixie causes is innocent enough. The chapters are short and there are a few black and white illustrations along the way. The words used are not as dumbed down as the Rainbow Magic books but that is fine. So this is a decent enough book for early readers.
