Charming Academy #2

Finding Prince Charming

Rate this book
Allegra is shocked during school to discover that rather than being sent to wait in a tower for her Prince Charming to rescue her, she will be rescuing him. To begin her story, she must first finish school, discover where her prince is hidden and overcome her greatest fears.
Adrian, her prince, is facing challenges of his own. Life as a frog isn't easy. He must deal with matchmaking frogs and a flirtatious mermaid who is the only one who can see him as he is. Can Allegra find him and make him human again before an unknown enemy keeps him a frog forever?

For as long as she can remember, Jessica L. Elliott has been telling stories. As soon as she could grasp a pencil she began writing those stories down. Reading fueled her imagination, as did spending time with her five younger brothers and sisters. Everything was an adventure, something to be treasured and stories were her first love. Jessica began seriously writing in high school and continued into college while attending Emporia State University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She wrote and released her first novel, Charming Academy, in August of 2011. Jessica currently lives in southwest Kansas with her husband and family.

The story continues as we zero in on Adrian and Allegra's quest. Unlike most couples, their roles have been flopped with Allegra being the quester and Adrian needing saved.

With only her horse, a mysterious gift from the fairies, and a very vague clue, Allegra begins her quest 2 years after Adrian was sent to wait for her. The protection around Adrian slips and he has to survive long enough for Allegra to find him. His biggest problems are in the natural environment around him.

Some of the local creatures are friendly, most are not, but it's up to him to stay alive and safe until Allegra finds him.

I'll admit that Allegra isn't one of my favorite princesses that were introduced in book one. I can appreciate the nice touch of her having a phobia. I have one and know how irrationally irritating they are and how hard it is to deal with the thing you fear.

I think my biggest struggle with Allegra is her lack of commonsense at times. For example, everyone knows that they classes you're given at the schools are specifically chosen for YOUR quest. Even though she's reminded often, Allegra forgets this. She barely pays attention in school, she constantly moans about her classes and can't see why they'll help her.

I kept wanting to smack her because even if you don't know what your quest is, you know your classes are tailored for it. Have dragon fighting? You're probably going to fight a dragon. Plan on it.

Then she starts off in a random place on her quest and I was thinking that if she had amphibian studies a good place to start would be a lake, or a swamp, or a pond. Instead she goes into the mountains!

But after that, she started to grow on me. I liked the real tinge of danger that followed her. Sometimes it was small, other times it was quite serious. I was eager to find out how she ended up where she needed to be and how she'd overcome her fear.

Adrian's pov scenes were my favorite. I loved seeing his cursed life and how he had to deal with it. And meeting Nerissa made me want to see more of her story. I really hope there's a HEA in her future because she was awesome!

I though Allegra summoning help at the end was uncalled for. Not only was it selfish, but she didn't need help and the person she called didn't even aid her. I'd have liked for her to have to face her fear more. Instead it felt like she got off easy.

I laughed about the well situation because I can imagine Adrian's frustration when he got down there and saw the collection. "Good grief! What is this girl thinking?"

I moaned about technical issues in the first book, so I want to mention that this one was MUCH better. I only spotted one typo and there was no headhopping. There were double blank lines between scene/pov shifts to help signify a change and only one instance of a pov flop(a couple lines of omni in the middle of Allegra's pov when she's dealing with the bandits and we're told what's behind her).

Overall, just so much cleaner on the technical stuff so I was able to fully engage with the story. No confusion and a much smoother read. Elliott is hitting her stride here, so I'm excited to see how the rest of the series goes.

I received this book as a gift after enjoying the first one.

An interesting retelling of the Frog Prince. It isn't easy, but with help from friends and family you can overcome your fears and live Happily Ever After.

While I enjoyed the first book, I wasn't as into Allegra's story. It's an interesting take on the frog prince. But I found myself wondering was Allegra being deliberately obtuse? Why would her first stop be a mountain top and why did she use the close her eyes and point at a random spot method. At least later on she started going to places that were close to her heart, as indicated by the clue she received. But I did not see the point of her whole detour.
I won't harp about her not being into her classes, since I was a lackluster student myself. But the only lessons she even refers back to are her survivalist's lessons. She never entered a swamp, marsh, etc where you would frequently find the critters her courses covered. So they in hindsight seemed superfluous. Honestly she didn't know Adrian was a frog until the last possible minute.
Honestly the book didn't really get that good for me until the end, when Charlotte entered the picture. And I liked Adrian's POV far more than following Allegra around. Nerissa was such a fun character. I hope she shows up again in the series and get someone of her own.
Overall not a bad book. But a bit Meh, for my tastes. Allegra goes through some trials and tribulations on her journey. Some of which could have been avoided. *the bandits* and Adrian does have to deal with living as a frog. The plot is fairly smooth and it's a quick read. I didn't have to many problems while reading; just one nitpick Allegra's Dressage horse name changed from Sunrise Rose to Sunset Rose within a sentence or two. not a big deal. I mean I totally like the name Sunset Rose better. But I just happened to notice it, and a couple spelling errors which I won't point out because I am terrible at spelling and tend to let it go when I see it elsewhere.
So Recommended? Eh,

Oh how I love fairy tales where the princess is the heroin. But I still don't understand why Allegra is afraid of frogs? But, I'm impressed that you followed the original story of "The Frog Prince". I also like that you added some of your own flair to the story as well. That's what made the book SO interesting.

Like everyone else, I have some questions about this book:
Why is the frog prince's name is Adrian? Does Adrian mean something?
How did you came up with your character names?

This is the second installment in the Charming Academy Series and I loved it. This was engaging and caught my attention right from the start. I read this to my girls and they really enjoyed this story also; always wanting just a little more each night. We are thrilled with how this clean young adult story went and can't wait to read more stories in this series.

I really enjoyed this book. After getting to know Allegra and the other characters in Jessica's first book, Charming Academy, I was anxious to read about their quests and to see how the things they learned at Charming Academy would help them create their happily ever afters. This book was about Allegra's quest to find Adrian, her prince. The story had several twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. Once again I found myself wanting to keep turning the pages to see what happened next as she faced each of her challenges. I enjoyed the unexpected help she received (don't worry I won't spoil the story by sharing too many details). And I was happy her quest was successful as I knew it would be - this is a fairy tale story after all.

I have to say that before finally receiving this book, I was just like the little boy in the book. I wanted so very much to find out what happened to everyone and to know their happily-ever-afters. I just couldn’t wait. I loved the first book and the second one was no let down.
I loved the fact that there were little hints and clues to the other’s stories. I only wish that we didn’t have to wait to read them.

The only part that I had trouble with were the few parts with just Allegra and Obsidian. During these parts it was a bit slow. However, other than that it was a fabulous book. It will be going on my favorites list. I’m looking forward to the next book. I can’t wait to see who’s story will be next.

This second book in the Charming Academy series was even better than the first. Elliott's writing has improved and the story flowed well. I enjoyed hearing about Allegra and Adrian's happily ever after and am excited for the next installment.
