The Chronicles of Tevenar
Calling
Elkan wants to become a farmer like his father, until a letter arrives that changes everything. The Mother has chosen him to become an apprentice wizard. If he accepts, he’ll learn to use her power to bring healing and help and truth to all the people of Tevenar. There’s only one problem. Elkan’s father hates wizards. When he needed them most, they failed him. Now he’s dead set against Elkan traveling to the capital to join the Wizards' Guild. The Mother’s call wakes a deep longing in Elkan’s heart to serve her. But in order to respond, he’ll have to find the courage to abandon everything he knows and loves and set off on a journey into the unknown.

Calling, by Angela Holder, is a fun, clean read. I’ve recently discovered there’s a subgenre for this in fantasy, called noblebright (as opposed to grimdark) and this book fits that niche perfectly. The tale isn’t long—I’d guess novelette-length—but it was well-written, had engaging characters who had to grow, with a story problem that was difficult to solve. All the elements for a satisfying read.

I read this in one sitting. It was a great, fast paced fantasy story. I'll certainly be checking out more by this author.

Great story
I loved this book and recognise it for the introduction it is. It captured the angst of a young person choosing a path that is unpopular with family expectations. Elian took the chance and worked hard to get what he felt was his calling. I loved the characters, identified with Elian, felt the pain of the father and enjoyed the journey. Can't wait to read the rest of the story. Great storytelling so far, looking forward to great world building in the next book.

"Calling" is a prequel to "The Fuller's Apprentice".
Elkan had grown up expecting to apprentice as a farmer to his father. He receives an invitation to apprentice to the wizards and has to rebel against his family in order to do so.
After climbing down from his bedroom window, Elkan starts the long journey towards his future.

Great introduction to the story
I really enjoyed this novella and I look forward go reading book one of the series. This story was riveting and touching and things surprisingly worked out in the main character's favor. I'd love to see how things go for him being a wizard apprentice.

Nette Vorgeschichte, die Lust auf die Hauptstory macht und schon mal ein wenig in die Welt von Tevenar einführt. Ein Stern Abzug wegen der Tierquälerei.

Elkan wants to become a farmer then he gets a letter. The Mother has chosen him to become an apprentice Wizard. If he becomes an apprentice he can use (her) powers to heal the people of Tevenar. But Elkan's Father does not like Wizards, because they had failed him in his time of need. Elkan wants to join the Wizards' Guild. He really wants to serve the Mother even if it displeases his father.
Elkan is brave and is willing to travel and face danger to become and apprentice. He is very likable, they story is original, the plot moves at a steady pace, they characters are well developed. I found Calling to be quite enjoyable and feel that fantasy lovers will enjoy it as well.

A Nice Read
I downloaded this free today and had an hour to wait, so I read it.
I was engrossed in it from the first chapter. It's well written and suitable for ages ten and up. It's about wizards and a young boy who wants to be one.
I say give it a try.

A good short story about doing what you believe in. It seems like a good start to a great series. The book was hard to start but as I kept reading I was looking forward to more.

Great story. I'm not sure if it's a prequel or was written after The Fuller's Apprentice. I loved learning more about Elkan and Sar.
