Chance Baker is a Bear Warden and all he has ever wanted was to protect the his country when he was serving and now to make sure hunters follow the law. But being how good these Bear Wardens are, they have now been deputized and also work on murders. Chance really never was interested in this, when he became a Warden, but now that he has come across a dead shifter on his territory and his mate too boot, he is dead set on finding the responsible party, while trying to woo the very independant and sassy Scientist/Environmentalist that wants nothing to do with a lasting relationship. When Summer Madison gets one look at the very imposing Warden she is thrown for a loop because he is really not her type, but dang does he do things to her otherwise analytic mind and body.
So I read the first book in this series and I enjoyed it, so I got the second one. Well, I did not like Summer at all. As an African-American woman I found her to be a stereotypical black woman. Meaning she was a BBW, had attitude and was "sassy". We are all not like that and it made it very hard to get behind the romance. I wanted Chace to pick someone else quite frankly. There was no apparent reason for this educated woman to be so overly aggressive and rude to people. All black women are not over opinionated, loud, rude, dismissive and judgemental. She immediately makes rude assumptions regarding Chace and she's just hell bent on her answer being the only right one. I wouldn't have liked her even if she wasn't black, but it just rubbed me the wrong way as I read. I will read the next book, because they are not totally connected.
Based on a previous review, I can understand how annoying Summer's character was for most of the book. I believe it was due to her scientific reasoning. Summer couldn't fathom anything that the science didn't prove. The reason for 3.5 stars.... simple. This could have been an IR BWWM story, no shifter aspect needed. Unlike most shifter stories, Chance didn't use his shifter instincts nor let his beast run much. Also, the ending felt rushed. My opinion of this story, as a whole, feels like the author was toying with the idea of mixing suspense, Paranormal and romance. I'd say it's a good idea and great try. But, the ending felt rushed. While I wanted to know the cause for the suspicious activity, there was no real, grip your seat build up moment. At any rate, read the book if you so desire.
From the moment they met it was fireworks. But for a girl named Summer she wasn't the warmest of characters. So focused on work and determined to prove her theory at any cost I felt sorry for Poor Chance seems to get it in the neck every time he try to help. He struggles to contain his shifter side around her as his bear is practically dancing a jig inside him, desperately trying to connect with his/their mate.
I read this as part of a Shifter box set, which I received as a Advance Reader Copy.
Loved this between sassy Summer and game warden Chance
Summer is doing research work on the copper mine polluting the water and surrounding areas whilst taking samples she stumbles across a bear who is dying the bear passes away as she is taking a blood sample the game warden Chance turns up. There is chemistry between them straight away Chances bear knows she is his true mate but Summer is sassy and strong minded. Where does their journey take them? Brilliant book leaving off from the first on but you don’t have to read them as can be stand alone books
3.5 When environmental biologist Summer finds a bear shifter dead from poisoning in the forest, she's convinced the mining company is responsible for the poisoning. The last thing game warden Chance wants is to be is in dispute with the sassy environmentalist especially as from the moment he met her he knew she was his mate but Chance needs proof not just suspicion. This is an insta love, nothing to deep kind of story but a sweet short read.
Chance is a grizzly shifter and Summer is an environmental biologist. She discovers the dying body of a shifter near the mining company. She tests the water and it is contaminated with arsenic. Chance and Summer investigate together and she feels sure the mining company is to blame but Chance is not convinced. Great book.
Read in the SHIFTER OVERDRIVE compendium. Summer comes across as quite abrasive to start but slowly grows on you. Very slowly. Not quite sure why she was like that as it is not explained. Chance knows Summer is his mate but does not tell her and wonders why she goes back to her life at the university. Horrible about what happens though.
I totally enjoyed reading this story. It started off exciting and dramatic and ended the same. It's a wonderful love story with great sex and lots of drama. I loved it.
Summer was certainly stubborn, she put having a career over love, but the heart wants what the heart wants. Chance was a sweetheart, and love the determination to look at all possibilities to catch the killer.
when summer is trying hard to find clue that the local mine is behind the decay of nature she didn't expect to stumble upon a dead bear. she also didn't expect to be found by the game warden and finding out the dead grizzly is actually a local shifter. gruff as the warden may seem there is something about him that interests her. she doesn't want to pursue it because she has only one thing on her mind : find proof the mine is at fault !! chance doesn't know what to make of the situation when he finds a petite woman with dreads handling syringe, taking samples from a dead grizzly, a man he knew even. he can't do anything else but see her as a suspect no matter how adamant she is she didn't do anything, that she's here to try to proof the mine is behind it all, the death and decay of the nature! both are headstrong and both want to find out the truth. for chance the truth also is that this woman is his perfect match, having his bear in full on lust modus! she's their mate and his bear wants him to claim her and make cubs, plenty of cubs. will these opposites get together or is their stubbornness their downfall as they're having to work together to find out who's the killer.
another wonderful addition to the bear wardens! loved the other books in this series and this was on par with the others. you can read them as stand alones and out of order (i did), they're to the point with no overabundance of info you could find in those superlong books. liked the short sweet turn around of this one.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review .Scarlett Grove has fast become one of my most favorite authors .A ll of her books are well written and grab you from the beginnings Bearly Believing is no exception its another brilliantly written story with characters who you cant help but attach to.In this the second book of the Bear Wardens series we have game warden Chance and environmental biologist Summer who meet over the dead body of a local shifter .Chance knows shes his true mate and that hes going to have to take things slow shes human , stubborn and fiercely independent .Summers sure that the copper mine is behind the death and shes set on proving it .Chance isn't so positive the mine is behind it and though he hates to disagree with Summer he will do whatever it takes to protect his people .The chemistry between these too is hot hot hot and I loved following along as they discovered not only what really happened to the dead shifter but found their happily ever after. Bearly Believing is a great read and I highly recommend it to other paranormal readers out there .
I think I'm in lust with Scarlett's Bear Wardens. This is the second of her Bear Warden books I've read and I just can't get enough. Chance Baker is the game warden and since shifters came out, also the law for crimes against shifters. Summer Madison is an environmental scientist taking water samples in the area of the town's copper mill. While in the forest she finds a dead grizzly and is convinced he was poisoned by the mill's water runoff. She consults with Chance on the investigation when they discover the bear was a shifter. The problem here is that Summer has a closed mind about the poison coming from any other source besides the copper mine. Chance is seeing first hand that it might not be the mine with the protests and violence from "shifter haters". I got frustrated with Summer being so closed minded, but realized she is young, idealistic and wants to be recognized in her field. She also is trying to convince herself that she wants nothing to do with a "hick" game warden. This is a stand alone book, but we do get to visit some old friends from the last book. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A bear shifter is killed and the game warden investigating finds a woman at the scene. She is actually a scientist investigating the area for contamination and discovered the body. Chance realizes very quickly than in addition to a crime to solve, he has found his mate. They usually have very different tastes in potential lovers but something pulls them together. Summer plans on heading back home so Chance will have to work fast to convince her to stay.
It is a short story that moves fast and keeps your interest. Summer is characterized by Chance as a hippy type and she stereotypes Chance as a dumb country guy. They really seem like opposites who wouldn't mix well but under the surface there is more to each. They have a chemistry that they have a hard time fighting. It is fun story and incorporates the characters from the other story in the series who I enjoyed seeing again.
Summer Madison a human and ardent environmentalist / research scientist who believes that a copper mine is going to cause damage to the area. While she is getting water samples she finds a dying bear shifter that is when Game warden Chance Baker comes across her as she is taking blood samples from the dead shifter. Chance knows he has found his mate ,but he does not know how to tell Summer. There is also more poisonings happening, to both adults and children. Can Chance and Summer find out what is happening and will Chance be able to get Summer to see they are meant to be together ? I was given this book for an honest review barwatts@telus.net

Chance is the local game warden and finds Summer taking a blood sample from the dead grizzly that shifts back to human. While fighting her own attraction to a bear...
This is Book Two of this series. It was better than book one. Chance and Summer clashed quite a bit. To the extent I did not like Summer, but towards the ends she came around. The plot itself was much better.
