In the early 19th century the Pacific Fur Company’s Astorians feverishly established trading posts from the Oregon coast to the western slope of the Continental Divide, country previously dominated by Canada’s mighty North West Company. But when the United States declared war on Great Britain in June 1812, it ignited a conflict that threatened the Astorians’ survival.
RETURN TO THE HELL GATE recounts the desperate struggle of Auguste Cerre, who must defend his scalp against the Blackfeet while keeping the Nor’West partisan Simon LaForge from stabbing him in the back. Interwoven in the conflict are Paulette, Cerre’s young Crow wife, and the French-Canadian trader Jean-Paul Beauvais. If Paulette and Auguste are going to live, the Blackfoot warrior Pale Buffalo must betray his brother, Shakes The Ground. Hanging like a sword over them all is Shakes The Ground’s fearsome ability to forecast death.
